RUMOR: Apple prepping Mac OS X Tiger ‘Automator’ web site

“Apple Computer is in the process of developing a resource Web site for its forthcoming “Automator” personal automation assistant, sources close to the computer company tell AppleInsider. The new Web site is expected to be ready for operation in early 2005, about the same time the company plans to launch its next-generation Mac OS X Tiger operating system, which features the new Automator application,” Katie Marsal reports for AppleInsider. “Similar to Apple’s iCal Web site, sources expect the Automator site to include helpful user tips and a section where users can submit or share their Automator creations.”

MacDailyNews Take: Automator, kind of like “AppleScript for the rest of us,” is Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger’s personal automation assistant that’s designed to help users streamline the most challenging repetitive manual tasks without programming. Having a central place for users to post and share Automator Workflows is obviously a great idea. Find out more about Automator here.

  1. “AppleScript for the rest of us”

Is Automator more like QuicKeys? You can do some amazing things with QuicKeys and the OSX version has finally matured to and past the OS9 version. But being a third party solution, it will never be widely adopted.
I never was very good with AppleScript. It may be the easiest scripting language out there, but it is still line command script.
I hope Autoator is the sleeper hit of 10.4. Right now dashboard is getting all the attention.

  2. Automator may be a good way to set up web pages of photos.

At the moment, iPhoto is too limited in it’s web page making ability and my standard program (MuchoThumbs) can be difficult to use.

What I would like is a way to import my photos and then have something make the web pages in the way I like.

  3. Begin Loop
    If Count WintelDevice > 0
    Then
    Find WintelDevice
    Delete
    Set Count MacDevice + 1
    Set Count WintelDevice – 1
    Repeat
    Else
    Exit Loop
    End If
    End Loop

    Comment# Life just got easier!!

  4. seriously, i’m a smart guy, but I DO NOT Applescript…

having said that , i saw the demo clip of Automator and think it’s incredibly easy to use..

Thurrott won’t touch it.. this is another one of those ‘reason enough to get a mac’ features that windows just can’t touch

(that’s what they said about Expose…)

  5. The article over at AppleInsider points out that all AppleWorks scripts have been removed from the most recent build of Automator. Hopefully, as AppleInsider suggests, this means that the new Apple “Office” suite is about to be unveiled. Here comes iWorks! (I hope.)

  6. First, let me say “DUH!” Of course Apple is building webpages for the features in Tiger. That is a no-brainer.

Second, I think the power of Automator and Spotlight will be a huge advantage over MS Windows (any version to come).

Lastly, the largest hurdle in getting someone switched over to a Mac is a fully Word-compatible, high-powered, publishing system pre-installed in a Mac and hopefully free with Tiger. Something that allows the user to create single themes to be used across all Apple aps such as web pages, desktop publishing, Keynote presentations, iMovies and DVDs. Make it the core of iLife.

  7. As far as generating photo album webpages, JAlbum is by far the best I’ve found ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” /> (yes, it works with iphoto)

Tera Patrick writes about it here: http://www.mac360.com/index.php/mac360/more/iphoto_web_pages_good_free_easy_and_all_others/

There’s a download link from her article, if you like what you read there ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />
