RUMOR: Apple Mac mini standard config with 512MB RAM standard coming soon?
Thursday, January 27, 2005 - 10:26 AM EST

"If you're contemplating a Mac mini purchase, stay tuned for at least one out-of-the-box config with 512 megabyes of RAM instead of the now-standard, woefully inadequate 256 megs. That may be coming to Apple retail stores as soon as next week, I've been told," Your Tech Weblog reports.

Full article here.

MacDailyNews Take: Do it, Apple. It's one less extra thing that new users will have to do - 512MB should be the base standard for all Macs today.

With a bit of luck, 512mb will be the minimum standard across the whole line. Talk about taking the long road.

I can't believe all this fuss over a $75 add-on.

Look, the people who will be interested in the Mini are pc users who are sick of Windows sucking the life out of them. These are also the people who never clear their temporary internet files, never clear their cookies, never clear their .tmp files, never defrag their hard drive, are infested with spyware, malware and viruses and basically don't know their ass from their elbows when it comes to pc's or computer in general. They can email their friends, listen to music and look at porn. That's their entire computing world - which can be done very nicely and without system problems on a Mini with 256 mb of ram.

I think you people are underestimating the wisdom of Apple.

I'm still Shocked that they are using PC 2700....Yikes...

Jan 27, 05 - 05:34 pm Comment from: NoMacForYou

Bill...Its a 75 dollar add on thats only worth 25...As I (and You) can buy a 1GB stick of DDR PC2700 for 84 bucks..This is why I dont buy Apple hardware..They charge 3 and sometimes 4 times what the going rate is for it.

If anyone is looking, MacZone has the mini 600 in stock:

Forgivable on the mini. 167MHz system bus, and a processor that doesn't properly support DDR.

The hardware isn't the thing that the mini is about. You're paying for OSX and iLife. The hardware just comes with it.

Well, as long as every review you see recommends upgrading to 512, it should not be that big of a problem. Sure some people are gonna opt for the 256 but then they will have been warned at least and it allows Apple to hit the sweet spot of 500 dollars. It would have to be a VERY basic user for me not to recommend 512 and even then I will probably recommend it just in case.

So no, I don't think this rumor is true and should be shut off immediately. It is not good for Apple.

XABEX, unfortunately that testing was not done on a mini so we can't be sure. The machines they used had much faster HDs and I think that could effect the results they posted.

I've heard rumors that Tiger might not play very well with the mini?! Can anyone give any details about this possibility?

Jan 27, 05 - 06:56 pm Comment from: Qman

My Mac mini blows away my Windows XP machine. And they both have 256MB.

Jan 27, 05 - 07:06 pm Comment from: Knock Knock

Those of you who compare opening thier mini to screwing a lightbulb obviously haven't done it. I've seen the movie too, but I've also done it myself. It's a little like sex for the first time. It looks so easy in the movies, but reality is it's a little awkward at first.

Besides, I don't have any $500 light bulbs, but you can bet your butt I'd be awfully careful with it if I did.

This is a hoax by the way. The reporter didn't even know how many slots there were in the mini.

$75 is a fair price for the upgrade to 512MB, but 1GB should be closer to $200 to be reasonable.

To the guy who thinks Apple should put 1GB, 64MB video and a superdrive in each one, you forgot about the 7200 RPM hard drive. Oh and a G5. And a 20" screen. All for $399, blow them all away! That would be sweet!

Magic word: child.

Jan 27, 05 - 07:07 pm Comment from: Tiger

Of course Tiger will run on the Mini. Tiger will run on a G3, G4, or G5.

Even CoreImage will run--using software rendering when needed.

Rumors otherwise come from... nowhere!

"I'm still Shocked that they are using PC 2700....Yikes..."

Versus...what? It's the same memory used in the low-end Dells and Compaqs.

"I (and You) can buy a 1GB stick of DDR PC2700 for 84 bucks."

Really? Way cool! Can you give me the URL? Since Crucial sells theirs for $226, Kingston is $248 (though I did find it as cheap as $213), and the lowest other brand I could find is $151.

Hell, that's half the cheapest and a third of the most expensive one! I'll buy two!

Here is a complete tech manual on the Mini. Shows how to do any upgrade step by step. Warning: It's 22mb in size. It will be available for 20 hours from the time of this post.

NoMacForYou - "Its a 75 dollar add on thats only worth 25..."

Well, maybe, maybe not...lets do the math:

Assuming your pricing is accurate, I save $50 on the price of the memory by buying it from your guy, but then I have to install it. So, lets just say it's my first mini and I am going to take my time so that I don't fuck it up and lose my warranty. If it takes me an hour from start to finish - that's finding and buying the memory to cracking the box to verifying the memory is recognized and functioning properly - I would be down $50. That's an hour of my time that I can't bill. And so, if it costs me $50 to have some schmuck at Apple install my memory for me - that's fine with me. Time is money pal, at least it is for me.

Jan 28, 05 - 12:52 pm Comment from: NoMacForYou

Peter: Go look again at Dell.com. The memory used in 99% of their systems is PC 3200 and above.

For memory go here : http://www.pricewatch.com

Time is money, Your right. But it takes me (and most people with the savvy) less than 15 minutes to install on a mini.
