Report: key products missing from Steve Jobs’ Macworld keynote due to Intel Core Duo supply issues
Thursday, January 12, 2006 - 01:08 PM EDT

"I'm sitting in a bar when I run into an old friend, who is very highly placed in the Apple world. I hate to cite an anonymous source, but trust me, he knows," Leander Kahney reports in his Wired Cult of Mac Blog. "And he tells me the keynote that Jobs gave was not the keynote he had planned. Some of the speech had been cut out. Key products were missing."

Kahney reports, "My source said there was some stuff, 'some very, very cool stuff,' that Jobs couldn't unveil because of 'supply issues.' They can't get enough Core Duo (chips),' said my source. He also said that if he were me, he probably wouldn't order one of the new MacBook Pros. I asked if there would be MacBook replacements for the 17-inch and 12-inch PowerBooks, but he said, 'Oh, it's much cooler than that. Much cooler.'"

super secret juicy rumours!

Jan 12, 06 - 02:22 pm Comment from: Joe the Farmer

Wow... how vague can you get =P

MDN MW: "Summer", as in "We probably won't see many of the snazzy new products until summer- and remember, Steve said there may be some more PowerPC things still in the pipeline."

Talk like that just makes me moist!

Jan 12, 06 - 02:28 pm Comment from: jackspratt

oh thank god for this little tidbit. i was afraid my new rumor-powered robot was going to run out of its reserves quickly, what with the holidays and Macworld now past.

365x24x7 Rumor cycle....

Kinda like the 4 year election cycle...

dontcha love it?!!!!

Jan 12, 06 - 02:30 pm Comment from: edgeknight

This is a bunch of bull. Lies just to make money. Sure, Steve wanted to show an Apple time machine but his flux capacitors had supply chain issues!

Anybody could claim that there was something missing, but let's not go make up stories about it.

Jan 12, 06 - 02:30 pm Comment from: 3 gHz within a Year- Pt 2

Usually it takes more than 2 days after a stevenote for the rumors to start flying. Wow.

Jan 12, 06 - 02:30 pm Comment from: war

Is it just me or does there seem to be more rumors after the keynote than there was before? Seems kind of backwards but funny.

Jan 12, 06 - 02:31 pm Comment from: Davidlow

Remember that lawsuit and countersuit between Apple and Burst.com just before the keynote? Doesn't it seem likely that Steve Jobs was really really counting on having those licensing rights as a foundation for some secret new thing he wanted to show us on Tuesday?

I'm not sure I believe that story about Core Duo supply issues, but I did get the very strong feeling that something was wrong onstage at the keynote. The presentation was not polished to Steve's usual standard, and now evidence that he had to change the line-up at the last minute, scrapping a few things and maybe introducing other things that weren't quite ready, fits the facts of what I saw come out of that keynote on Tuesday.

Jan 12, 06 - 02:31 pm Comment from: war

than there were before.... I really should proofread these things before I post.

Jan 12, 06 - 02:35 pm Comment from: davida

I knew it! 2006, the year Apple comes roaring back! On the Apple web site, they list quite a few 'special events', not sure if its more than usual, but I'm sure we will be blown away. Sweet.

Jan 12, 06 - 02:46 pm Comment from: Ampar

When and what is the next big trade show?

The Mac mini must be going through metamorphosis too. But to what?

"Apple Computer. Going out of business for thirty years and counting."

Jan 12, 06 - 02:47 pm Comment from: typhoon

look. i can't hande another month or even week or rumors. my stomach jsut can't take it.

Jan 12, 06 - 02:50 pm Comment from: Random Coolzip

I'm skeptical about Core Duo supply issues, but some product intro being pulled from the keynote would explain why it seemed to not flow too well - the iLife presentation seemed needlessly stretched out and overall it didn't seem as well polished as previous addresses.

If the content had been set further in advance, I'd have expected less time on iLife and more on iWork, iTMS (especially video uptake) and financials. As I said, it seems like the iLife stuff was padded out at the last minute to fill space.

If there is in fact some wonderful new product we almost saw Tuesday, I suspect it might be pushed back to April and tied in with the 30th anniversary of Apple. We have iMac (January), MacBook Pro (February), Pro Apps as Universal Binaries (March)... so a major announcement around the first of April would keep the hype cycle in full swing...

"The new Ilife is here, the new iLife is here!"

hey.. just an update.... ILife just got here from FedEx..... the box is smaller, like an oversized CD box. Loading now...

MDN word is "stock".... how appropriate... I'm making a bundle

Jan 12, 06 - 02:56 pm Comment from: mike k.

I've got $5 that says we see a "media-focused/living-room" Apple special event in February.

The rapid-fire iPod events in the fall and the statements from Apple-execs that they were going to move away from relying on trade-shows to debut new products suggest that there is much more waiting to be unveiled. Also, i'm sure Steve enjoys f'ing with the rumour sites.

Jan 12, 06 - 02:56 pm Comment from: Sir. OMF

That was the strangest keynote I can recall

Jan 12, 06 - 02:58 pm Comment from: iMaki

Well, this sheds some light on the anemic introductions. I'm not complaining though; I wished for an Intel iMac and got it. I was definitely shocked it was the first one out of the box. I'm anxious to see what is next. It better be soon. I have absolutely no patience waiting for my toys!!!

Jan 12, 06 - 02:58 pm Comment from: imax

You're welcome MDN.

Jan 12, 06 - 03:00 pm Comment from: Jim

iLife 06 update....

wow.... a 40 min install for iLife?..... what's in this thing?

Jan 12, 06 - 03:06 pm Comment from: G-ZUS

This rumor is clearly crap. It's about on par with some sandwich guy at 7-11 suggesting that Apple is coming out with plasma TVs.

Why even post links to these things??

Steve had Jan. 26th highlighted in the demo of iPhoto calendars during the keynote. Coindidence? We'll see.

If the processors for the PowerMac Intel transition are ready, I predict all Macs will be transitioned by WWDC in June.

The rest of the year will be devoted to iPod/video/living room/OS Leopard.

Jan 12, 06 - 03:13 pm Comment from: R

There's a huge thread at MacRumors about all this...

Jan 12, 06 - 03:13 pm Comment from: Queezzie

Imagine that new Apple intel commercial with some additional shots of the new products that weren´t released in addition to the iMac (which is not a new design...).

Almost think the MacBook pro introduced was a - "we gotta´have something to show!"

None of the intelmacs shown had an upgrade design of any kind. I had expected to hear from Steve, "Not only do with have new Intel processors but also totally new laptop and macmini designs".

Jan 12, 06 - 03:15 pm Comment from: Mr. Peabdoy

M U S T H A V E R U M O R S . . .

Anyway, I'm with mike k. on this one. If it really is, "...very, very cool.", then in addition to an Apple media center (which I'm really ready for), I think we're gonna see Apple tablets, and maybe even an iPDA - No really, I honestly think some or all of the above will be on Apple shelves near you sooner that one might expect. Really.

And please keep the apparently insider rumors coming - no really! I'm serious - really!

"Remember that lawsuit and countersuit between Apple and Burst.com just before the keynote? Doesn't it seem likely that Steve Jobs was really really counting on having those licensing rights as a foundation for some secret new thing he wanted to show us on Tuesday?"

If so, what does this really MEAN for us? How in the hell will they be able to actually "settle" with Burst (or push the case through the courts) in a short-enough timeframe to not miss the boat on the neat things they may have held back? I'm worried about this.

Or do you think Apple will just buy Burst outright?

Jan 12, 06 - 03:17 pm Comment from: bmccaff

The rumors are like crack for us.

Jan 12, 06 - 03:22 pm Comment from: The MacDaddy-Oh!

Steve-O left something out?! The thing lasted an hour and a half! What more could he have thrown in there? (Don't say he should have cut out some of the demo because #1, he did (he did not demonstrate iDVD for a lack of time, and #2, he always demonstrates the new iLife software.

If demand is such a problem, then I guess he was pushing the envelope with every PowerPC machine!

All time best sig! That's great stuff.

ok... exporting some video to my ipod... very cool... one thing... when loading, iMovie leaves large black spots on the screen. They refresh when I move an open folder over them.

Yeah, I have alot of these friends, too. I'm SOOOO in the know.

It's an 8-pound iPod with a 10-inch screen.

Jan 12, 06 - 04:47 pm Comment from: Davidlow

MacLevelheadedness:
Burst.com has a market capitalization of about $50 milliion (i.e. the sale value of the company based simply on the value of their stockmarket shares). I think Apple could afford to make a purchase like that. Doesn't Apple have a huge pile of cash somewhere?

Microsoft is already paying Burst.com a hefty licensing fee. Why didn't THEY just buy the company? This is worrying, yes. Too bad Steve's RDF doesn't extend all the way to Burst's lawyers.

Jan 12, 06 - 04:48 pm Comment from: MacDude

Yea, I sat next to this great looking Apple lady in a quiet resturant while she spilled her guts about the inner workings at Apple.

I then extorted her with threats of going public unless she performed for me under the table.

Hmmm, I seemed to have gotten off track a little.

Jan 12, 06 - 04:57 pm Comment from: Queezzie

The MacDaddy-Oh!: "Steve-O left something out?! The thing lasted an hour and a half! "

That´s why Steve stuck in all that filler about the i-programs and who cares (iLife - $79 program if you buy it separately) - he couldn´t use it for quality time of showing new minimac computers and that secret videoipod and apple phone which all require the Burst thing cleared up that is in lawsuit.
Plus he probably wished he didn´t drop those sales figures before next weeks financials are out - but he had to spice up a ho-hum presentation.

Jan 12, 06 - 05:45 pm Comment from: leancuisine..

thanks G-ZUS for reminding me of the bizarre sandwhich-guy rumour. That has to be the most strange rumour ever preceeding a Steve-note. It was priceless. Still is... Sandwhich-guy! Perhaps it's the same guy, but he got promoted to the Apple canteen by now.

Jan 12, 06 - 06:08 pm Comment from: MacWrath

The drooling babble on this thread just proves how let down most of the Mac faithful were by this particular keynote. The cool aid isn't wearing off or we wouldn't be expressing such fervent hopes and deep seated desires here today. But maybe the emporer's RDF is waning. Time to recharge the battery Steve and impress your armies.

I am in the same boat. I was not impressed by the name change to MacBook (sounds like the old WinBook), the specs of same, the change back to black, etc. and the general lack of new products, content providers, and such. I, too, think this whole presentation felt pieced together and disjointed compared to some in the recent past. And I, too, believe that there were other things slated for release but 86'd at the last minute. But what I don't know. These theories are as good as any.

Don't know what else to believe. I cannot, will not believe that our saviour has slipped or fallen much less that his RDF is failing for good.

Jan 12, 06 - 10:36 pm Comment from: KenC

I had the impression that at Otellini's keynote at CES, he said they were going to ship their 100 millionth Yonah by the end of the month. Okay, it's a vague memory, maybe he said 10 million. Either way, I do remember him saying a big number, cause I was trying to figure how many of those would be Apple's.

One thing people don't seem to get is that Apple is the first to ship a Yonah. Not Dell, not HP, not the usual suspects. Clearly, Apple is getting pride of place in shipping first, which shows how important Intel sees Apple becoming.

Jan 12, 06 - 10:57 pm Comment from: Less is More

I dislike portables: too easy to drop, damage, break; too slow; small keyboard; still prefer a mouse.... I live for big screens that I adjust once and only once for a perfect view, not to mention speed -- godawful speed. But I love the eye candy of the backlit Apple logo so much that if I had a PB I'd put a mirror in the back to see the logo.

It'd take something "much cooler" to add a portable to my stable. OK, I'm intrigued. Whatizzit?

Jan 25, 06 - 03:35 pm Comment from: Source

My cousin works with apple, and had urged my friend, who obviously admires me for my apple products, to not wait for the "other" portable, if he wanted a professional machine...even though the new mac is going to be awesome...supply is very tight
My bet is a MacBook IBook replacement with some very very niffty features...
The only hint my cousin gave me, was that the new portable is going to be different...and he also hinted on the material.

So "maybe" we'll see metal notebooks at consumer level prices...possibly widescreen?
