Report: No live webcast or satellite broadcast of Apple CEO Steve Jobs’ Macworld Expo keynote
Thursday, January 06, 2005 - 04:14 PM EST

According to a brief report on MacInTouch, "Steve Jobs is not allowing any real-time webcast or satellite broadcast of his Macworld Expo keynote." The MacInTouch report is based on a note from Apple Computer that was forwarded by a MacInTouch reader:

Apple will not be making satellite coordinates available. Although the keynote will be available on our web site - it will not be available until sometime after the keynote is over.

According to the MacInTouch reader's note, Apple does not have a time determined for when the Jobs Keynote QuickTime stream will be posted, so it may not be immediately after the keynote is over.

This SUCKS!!!!! mad

Jan 06, 05 - 04:24 pm Comment from: steve m

does anyone know anyone who's going who can give updates during the keynote?

Jan 06, 05 - 04:24 pm Comment from: Smithy

Steve's probably pissed that all these rumors are flowing around... maybe this is his way of getting revenge.

Jan 06, 05 - 04:25 pm Comment from: Glick7

...but when can I purchase my new headless Macs for my Aunt and my daughter?

Jan 06, 05 - 04:27 pm Comment from: macnut222

It wouldn't surprise me smithy....should we all blame Think Secret? tongue wink

Jan 06, 05 - 04:29 pm Comment from: effwerd

Just what I was thinking Smithy. And yes, macnut222, whether true or not, we might as well blame Nick.

(magic word: nuclear) eek

Jan 06, 05 - 04:31 pm Comment from: effwerd

why isn't this a story?

Jan 06, 05 - 04:32 pm Comment from: M. T. MacPhee

I think it is more likely that folks have asked Steve not to broadcast it, because so many people would be watching, it would bring the internet to its knees. Better to spread the load out somewhat by posting it when everyone knows the gist of what has been announced. Then you can wait for a time convenient to you, which will be different than everyone else's time.

Jan 06, 05 - 04:34 pm Comment from: effwerd

strike that; i see that it is.

Jan 06, 05 - 04:40 pm Comment from: G-Spank

well, I am going to take this opportunity to make my MacWorld predictions:

headless mac? Yes, and for $499
flash iPod? Yes, thinksecrets prices
iPhone? Nope
New Powerbooks? Sadly, no...but we'll see an update in the next month or two...
New PowerMacs? Nope
Lots of talk about the next OS X? You betcha
iLife2 - yes! (Garageband2 will rock!)
iWork - yes!

That's about it. Should be a kick ass MWSF!

Jan 06, 05 - 04:41 pm Comment from: Beantown

MDN is going to get overloaded with refresh hits for the transcripting.

Jan 06, 05 - 04:43 pm Comment from: Knock Knock

Rumors sits have been bad bad bad! Steve's going to take his ball and go home. He's going to stop making Insanely Great products and shut down Apple. All because rumor sites and the other media outlets are taking away the surprise, the glory and power that give Steve his hipness, and all the anticipation.

If I was in the business of creating pre-event hype, I'd sue anyone that took that away from me. It's just amazing that Apple can have products built and stockpiled and the greater world as interested as we are, have no knowledge.

I would rather read incorrect pre-keynote speculation, than ruin the anticipation. If all these rumors are true and there's nothing new to learn at the Stevenote, it would be a letdown no?

I hope Apple comes out with something that isn't out on the rumor sites. Something like the Airport Express, that even though I might not buy one, is an insanely great idea and adds more value to having a Mac. All these rumors would be wonderful if true, but the surprise is now ruined.

When the iPod mini rumor came out it was going to be $99. What a let-down for $249, but that $249 price was exactly the right price. The crowd was clearly let-down. Some were angry. The rumor destroyed the moment and loaded us with pre-conceptions.

Rumors are great, but save them for between-event speculation, please. Let the hype build. Give Steve his glorious moment without feeling like he telling us something we already know. I love the rumors, but I want reality to be better and unexpected when the time comes.

Jan 06, 05 - 04:46 pm Comment from: JJ re: Steve m and others

USUALLY MacCentral has a play by play during the keynote.

Jan 06, 05 - 04:50 pm Comment from: Ray

I recall they didn't do a live broadcast of the last keynote either.

Jan 06, 05 - 04:59 pm Comment from: Brian

I will be going to the keynote. I have considered setting it up so I could put out announcements and they would go to my blog automatically, would there be a demand for such a thing? Let me know. If I get enough response then I will do it.

Jan 06, 05 - 05:05 pm Comment from: cooderbrown

sadly for the rumormongers - there is probably nothing to announce at the keynote other than iLife and Keynote

Jan 06, 05 - 05:08 pm Comment from: johnE

"why isn't this a story?"

Effwerd....my guess is that 'this' is not a story because the average Joe doesn't know what 'this' means in/for the marketplace.

Jan 06, 05 - 05:13 pm Comment from: pkradd

People, although they have in the past Apple has absolutely no obligation to beam the keynote live. It has been a priviledge for Mac fans all these years, not a right. We'll get a replay sometime during Tuesday just as we did with Mac Expo Paris and other events in the past years.
Several Mac sites will provide play by play via the printed word... you remember that form of communication....

Jan 06, 05 - 05:14 pm Comment from: max

That does it...I'm not taking his house.

Jan 06, 05 - 05:15 pm Comment from: solarflare

This is happening because of all the rumour sites!

SJ must be really pissed off with them!

Jan 06, 05 - 05:16 pm Comment from: pkradd

cooderbrown,
Not providing a live feed has ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with the possiblity of Apple not introducing exciting new products. The iMac G5 was introduced at Mac Expo without a live feed. The original iPod was introduced at a special event without a live feed. You see... it means nothing.

Jan 06, 05 - 05:17 pm Comment from: Aryugaetu

Just a coincidence...?

The odds of an OS crashing during a Gates presentation = 99%
The odds of an OS NOT crashing during a Jobs presentation = 99%

Jan 06, 05 - 05:20 pm Comment from: bill

Very Simple: The man has cancer and doesn't want to be seen.

Jan 06, 05 - 05:20 pm Comment from: Aryugaetu

To see what's new, all you have to do is update the Apple home page every few minutes during the presentation.

Perhaps some people are cultish if they MUST hear the sacred words from their leader's own mouth. Some people on here are too scary.

Jan 06, 05 - 05:21 pm Comment from: Gandalf

After Gates recent experiences best keep the option for an edit grin

Ray, I concur, that is my recollection too. Maybe WWDC or Paris, however the most recent keynote.

Jan 06, 05 - 05:23 pm Comment from: mr. mysterio

Jobs probably doesn't want live coverage of the crowd's groans and boos when he doesn't announce the $400 headless iMac.

Jan 06, 05 - 05:28 pm Comment from: AlexSpark

Chill out people.. the answer is v.simple

This Keynote has been hyped so much that it would efficient to stream it live.

Jan 06, 05 - 05:29 pm Comment from: AlexSpark

* inefficient

Jan 06, 05 - 05:30 pm Comment from: critic

Maybe the fine folks over at Crazy Apple Rumors were right with their prediction a while back for....sexbots!!! Too hot for a live broadcast.

Either that or Steve is worried about a "wardrobe malfunction" and doesn't want it caught on video. wink

Jan 06, 05 - 05:31 pm Comment from: macnut222

Aryugaetu, Apple doesn't update their homepage until AFTER the Keynote is finished

Jan 06, 05 - 05:33 pm Comment from: brando

G-Spank I do believe the iPhone will be announced. Other than that I agree with the rest of your predictions.

I predict that G5 2.7 or 3Ghz will be announced during the summer for the power macs.

Jan 06, 05 - 05:36 pm Comment from: Eple

Yeah, Paris wasn't streamed, because of time zones they said. Shouldn't be a problem now, except for us sitting in Europe.

So why doesn't he stream? Because he is scared by Bills hilarious acts? That would be pretty stupid. Steve is Bills elder and cooler brother, he'll never run into the same enbarassements as Bill.

So we'll wait, but not see? How ironic: This post is brought to you by the magic word "saw".

Jan 06, 05 - 05:36 pm Comment from: chadwick

Apple has had so much free press for that past few weeks. Maybe some of the detailed specs infringed on Apple's trade secrets but all this rumor talk has only energized and excited its customers and soon to be customers! Shareholders will be laughing all the way to the bank and we will have some nifty new gadgets to play with.

Jan 06, 05 - 05:40 pm Comment from: Ralph

Apple has been known to hold off on posting links. I'm still hoping for a late Monday or early Tues. morning for a link to the live webcast. Doesn't Steve take a bit of pride when anouncing the number of live broadband connections to his keynotes? Here's to hoping for a live keynote... and a few (good) surprises.

Jan 06, 05 - 05:45 pm Comment from: PantiesInAWad

Steve must be pissed.

Boohoo! Now, now, here is your bottle. There, isn't that better.

Jan 06, 05 - 05:47 pm Comment from: natis

I dunno. I never had luck actually watching an Apple keynote streamed live that didn't connect or if it did, it didn't stream very well for long.

Jan 06, 05 - 06:10 pm Comment from: edgeknight

For the last three years I've tried to view the live webcast and the post-keynote feed online with no success. For each event, I've had the fastest connection known to man (hyperbole), and gotten nothing but highly pixelated, slow-as-molasses content. It just isn't worth it. The problem is not Apple, nor Quicktime, nor Steve Jobs... it's the amount of people watching that is a problem. The servers just can't handle the demand by so many people. I'm surprised some cable/satellite TV channel (G4TechTV, CNN, etc.) haven't decided to air the event live.

Jan 06, 05 - 06:17 pm Comment from: Nicolas Seriot

For those who have troubles seeing the keynotes in good quality, you can download them as a .mov file : see http://seriot.ch/AppleKeynotes

Jan 06, 05 - 06:17 pm Comment from: mac dood

if this is true... I wont have any problems watching the stream after the show...

But, if I must wait... I wont be sneaking peeks at MDN, or any other Mac related sites till after I watch the keynote...

natis ...

I suppose it depends on your connection, and how far away from the source you are...

Usually, Im able to watch the entre keynote with only one or two interuptions...

Jan 06, 05 - 06:23 pm Comment from: DavidO

Does this also mean no live cast to Apple Stores?

There might be a possibility of big changes in Apple stock price, but that wouldn't be a reason for lack of live broadcasting, would it?

Magic word: "required"

Jan 06, 05 - 06:31 pm Comment from: scokor

I would bet there will be a late Monday / early Tuesday posting of a link to the keynote....

Just one more rumor for the rumor sites!

Jan 06, 05 - 06:36 pm Comment from: Kassandra

wtf, now i can't miss school that day to see it live!

Jan 06, 05 - 06:54 pm Comment from: mac dood

Kassandra.

Shame on you .. wink

Jan 06, 05 - 07:03 pm Comment from: john

I can't imagine it has anything to do with the lawsuits since the last WWDC keynote wasn't broadcast either.

I was ticked too. I've been watching it via satellite for so many years. =( So much for being the Mac faithful. We're being treated like Gateway customers.

Jan 06, 05 - 07:42 pm Comment from: pkradd

A poster at Apple Insider says he called the Atlanta Apple Store and they told him they would be showing the Keynote. He didn't say if it was live however. I think Apple will have something on their website tomorrow.

Jan 06, 05 - 08:08 pm Comment from: Jon

Dang! big surprise

Jan 06, 05 - 08:09 pm Comment from: Apple's New Website Address

http://www.iphone.org

Give it a test drive wink

Jan 06, 05 - 08:09 pm Comment from: Sum Yung Gai

Probably either Moscone or IDG tried to charge Apple a fat fee for a live broadcast out of the convention center.

Or maybe the keynote will involve high-res Tiger imagery that wouldn't be visible in a streamed video.

Or whatever. Who cares? The keynote will be available soon enough.

Jan 06, 05 - 08:15 pm Comment from: Hamid

Well, just have to follow the very rumor sites Apple is after ....

Jan 06, 05 - 08:19 pm Comment from: notatotalsucker

This will be my first MacWorld, so I have no idea what goes on.

Do they show the keynote on a huge screen or something at the convention centre? Or is it just bad luck for people who didn't splurge on one of the training course tickets providing keynote entry?

(Basically, we got floor passes, b/c afaik, floor/keynote passes aren't available.)

Anyone been before who can shed some light on the goings on?

Jan 06, 05 - 09:05 pm Comment from: david vesey

"A poster at Apple Insider says he called the Atlanta Apple Store and they told him they would be showing the Keynote"

Interesting.

Perhaps Apple will be restricting webcasts to the Apple Stores in order to drive traffic there. Actually not a bad idea (for Apple).

I'm going to call my local Apple stores and ask. Bummer for me as I'm temporarily handicapped and it's a drag getting around in my wheelchair. Oh well, not the end of the world.
