Report: Apple Mac OS X 10.4.1 for Intel hits piracy sites
Saturday, June 11, 2005 - 11:14 AM EST

"There is nothing at all that prevents the version of Mac OS X that runs on the developer transition machines from running on any PC with compatible components," Jeff Harrell writes for The Shape of Days. "The Intel-based Power Macintoshes that Apple is showing at their developer conference are based on an Intel motherboard, generic Intel graphics and off-the-shelf Pentium 4 CPUs... I estimate that we’re down to a matter of hours before Mac OS X 10.4.1 for Intel hardware is available for download on Internet software piracy sites and peer-to-peer piracy networks. (Update: A reader who for obvious reasons wishes to remain anonymous just demonstrated to me that the software is, in fact, already available on Internet software piracy sites.) If I can think through this stuff, Apple’s management can think through this stuff. This is the most awe-inspiring stealth marketing move I’ve ever seen."

"According to reports, Apple’s bundled iLife applications, major selling points for the Mac operating system, are already Intel-native and run at full speed... Given Apple’s experiences with software piracy, particularly the rampant software piracy that spread developer builds of Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger all over the Internet this past spring, Apple’s management from the top down knows full well that this developer preview will be in the hands of every kid with a cable modem within days of its release. Most of them will be able to install it on their own computers and run it and the full suite of iLife ’05 applications at full speed, and run most existing Mac software in translation. As a result, Apple will give thousands, possibly millions, of people a taste of Mac OS X running full speed on their own PCs. Apple’s giving their potential future customers a free taste, that’s what they’re doing. It’s a try-before-you-buy deal," Harrell writes.

Man Powerbookuser, you need to cool it. You type as if "YOU" own Apple. I am sure that "YOU" don't so chill. If people want to use multiple OS's let 'em. I personally use Win2k, XP, (3) different distros of Linux and Mac OS X. It just makes me much smarter than those that stick with just one OS. I can only speak for myself, but if I want to use Mac OS X and I pay for it with the money that I have earned, there isn't a "THING" that you can say about it so grow up guy or gal.

Whats to stop them editing the ATM window in a screenshot then taking a photograph of it? =)

Jun 12, 05 - 05:32 pm Comment from: SentriX

I would like to check it out. I understand why Apple has not ported their OS to run on x86 processors especially due to Micro$oft's business practices. I have heard of stories of companies that tried to do business with Steve Balmer and it was said that he is very imposing and so was Micro$oft.

Anyway, I would love for Apple to port OSX over so that we could run it on some serious hardware. I love Apple's software, but a multi-processor version would make it all less expensive for all of us.

BTW, the screen shot looks like WindowBlinds with that ObjectBar program running -- Not saying that it is however.

Lol, I like your thinking. =)

Also, they may have a MAC stashed away somewhere, and attached to that monitor. :/

Jun 12, 05 - 05:37 pm Comment from: msEdge

And sentri x, did you even read the article? Did you even watch the WWDC, they've had it ported to x86 for 5 years now. -_-

It's a fake, downloaded it, nothing but GNANAGANAGA everywhere in the files, it's bogus..

Jun 12, 05 - 05:51 pm Comment from: Mac OS X86

Even then steve was simply confirming something most of us were pretty sure about anyway.

Since darwin runs happily on x86, and a lot of the early pre-OSX builds they were working on were compiled for PPC and X86, it seems pretty obvious apple continued this trend behind closed doors, just in case smile

It's just a marketing scheme it's so blatant. doesn't surprise me from apple though.

Shouldn't that be NYAA-NYAA-NYAA-NYAA?

Jun 13, 05 - 02:52 am Comment from: MCCFR

@ MacJack:

I have no idea what he said, but the chronology of your statement cannot possibly be correct if Macintel machines are going to start shipping in 2006 and Leopard isn't coming out until late-2006/early 2007.

That means that if Leopard shipped towards the end of that prediction - let's say April 2007 - Apple would be forced to live without major performance upgrades for another 18 months and I really don't see that happening.

Also, a lot of the testing work that will happen now under the 10.4.1. DR would be largely redundant if the first OS that Macintels were likely to see was 10.5.

If you accept those point as reasonable, then the first Macintels - likely to be iBook/eMac and Mac mini, and most likely with an Apple internal target to be relaunched at MWSF 2006 - are going to ship with a 10.4.x variant…

Ain't no big deal. PC users won't get it. They'll download it but won't switch or understand the beauty of OS X. PC people for the most part tend to use the same side of the brain as accountants.

Left Rear Tire you f*ckin idiot you're too dumb to understand that not everyone has MONEY. If that extra MONEY that YOU have thanks to your parents, that allows you to buy macs and other "elite stuff" goodies make you so superior and so much more forward thinking than the rest of the world, why do you just say shit?

I don't see why apple would give a damn if a bunch of geeks get's their hands on the beta. When the real thing is released no serious user would wanna run an unsupported OS on unsupported hardware.

How many out there is running the x86 version of Rhapsody (or Rhapsody at all for that matter) for example?

But i don't doubt the fact that that the final version, locked to Apple hardware or not, will be cracked to run on generic x86 PCs. But that doesn't really have anything to do with this beta.

Jun 14, 05 - 11:05 am Comment from: Jebus

As I read through these forums I see comments like winblows and stuff like that, why is OS X that much more of a superior operating system, is it because there arent any virus' made for the operating system - put yourself in the shoes of those who make virus', should you make a virus that affects 95% of the PC's out there, or write a virus that only will effect a few mac users. With windows you are able to have the versatility to include many different system configurations built by anyone, instead of playing an extra $1000 for the product that mac comes out with. Hurray, Mac gives you a great GUI, extremely simplified, without very many menus, its basically drag and drop everything. Ohhh, forgot about this one, how about programs being able to run, yaaa we have a great system that can do image manipulation, well windows has the same program, it might not be optimized as well as Mac, but windows is able to run about 300% more programs than the mac os. I see people at school with iMacs, and I ask, "Why did you end up getting a Mac" their response "Because when I'm on AIM, the little running man runs accross the screen" Congratulations Steve Jobs, you converted someone from PC because of an extremely stupid feature. Longhorn is going to blow Mac's OS out of the water.

it's still a mac with an intel cpu but the fanboys still think it's better. did i miss something between the lines?

look people, it's like this...

most computer users want what they already have... a computer with an OS that does everything they want.

i've been using windows since 3.11 and i had a chance to play with Mac OSes since 7.5.1 and i always switch back to windows. i actually bought a couple beige boxes (if any of the fanboys know what those are) and they're sitting at home collecting dust.

not because i'm a windows whore but because at the end of the day, i can do what i need to do on my windows pc a hell of a lot faster and easier than i ever could with a mac... at least right now.

hell, i believe that BeOS is the most advanced operating system out to date, and that apple and microsoft are copying wholesale a lot of the features that BeOS has perfected and they are still getting them wrong, but i still go back to windows because i already have all the apps i need to do what i want and i really don't need to spend another chunk of dollars on a batch of apps that barely do half of what Office already does, or another version of Photoshop, or Keynote, or any of the other stuff i need to run.

think people, if the thing ain't broke, don't replace it.

(need convincing? BFS=WinFS service, fast search is already a reality on BeBoxes (mac or intel) where you type in what you want and it goes across all your files including docs, pics, vids, tunez, drivers, apps, porn, chicken, cheese, crackers.....)

as for all the hot yummy features in Tiger, i highly suggest that you save your money and wait for 10.5 or some later version. from what i could see, Tiger is Panther with extra appz, yet another layer for Expose and a new graphics core. it doesn't seem to be very new or very advanced.

i always get attacked by mac fanboys for telling it the way i see it.

all of you who think Jobs is some kind of butthole for making this switch, just try to remember that Darwin has been running on x86 for years now and that you of that "rock solid" foundation to years of Mach and FreeBSD running on x86 hardware even before apple thought of spending money on NeXT.

that felt great coming off my chest...

now onto technical stuff...

i believe that MacIntel OSes will only install on a box with a MacIntellian BIOS, similarly to what you would find today with a DELL or COMPAQ OEM version of Windows (pop the cd in your clone and you'll see what i mean). this is probably the way they will keep people from buying the OS and not the PC it's supposed to be running on.

they may even change the look of the powermac line to go along with the new core system.

Jun 14, 05 - 09:06 pm Comment from: Charles

Confirmed: It's a hoax. I found the file and downloaded it. It contains useless files. Multiple sources have confirmed the disk image, when booted, contains unpleasant porn images.

The article at "The Shape of Days" is censoring comments that confirm the "leaked Tiger for Intel" is a hoax. He claims that he's deleting any description of how to download the file. He's lying. I posted two messages that did NOT describe how to get the file, and merely indicated that I confirmed the file is a hoax, and he censored both messages. Perhaps he's trying to eliminate any reports that would undermine the main premise of his article. Sheesh.

Jun 14, 05 - 09:08 pm Comment from: Ummm

I hate apples hardware. It a crazy because they are still losing a gaming market. Think of this you can buy a Nivida 6600 GT for $160 for your windows pc, that you built. But foe the Apple you pay $300 and then it does not run as fast.

Apple need to make their OS as a box only thimg.

Jun 15, 05 - 01:12 am Comment from: Jeff Harrell

Yes, I most certainly do edit comments. I do not allow discussion of sources for the distribution of stolen goods on my Web site. I'm steadfastly refuse to open myself up to that kind of liability. All mentions of sources are removed and replaced with a note to that effect.

I would recommend that Mac Daily News adopt the same policy for their own protection against legal liability, but that's just my advice.

Jun 15, 05 - 02:44 pm Comment from: Charles is a dumb fcuk

Charles, my name says it all.
Just because some joker puts out as bogus file claiming to be OS X 10.4.1 and you download it doesn't mean that a REAL iso of 10.4.1 doesn't exist on a piracy site.
Also you use of the term HOAX is stupid. At worse all anyone can say about the original article is that you can't confirm that 10.4.1 is in the wild.
To use the word hoax you are claiming the author of the original article KNOWS that it is not available in the wild yet claims that it is. Yet even in that case it wouldn't be a hoax, just a lie.

In any event, he's not lying so the whole thing is moot.

Jun 15, 05 - 07:45 pm Comment from: Charles

Nope, there is no OS X for Intel out there. It just doesn't exist. This whole round of rumormongering is based on one guy who said someone showed him a LINK to the file online. He never actually verified it, he just took it for granted that the file was what it claimed to be. The file he saw was the same thing I saw, a hoaxed file.

There is no disk image of OSX for Intel because it's not being distributed on a disk. It's being distributed preinstalled on hardware.

Jun 16, 05 - 12:00 am Comment from: anon

"It just doesn't exist?" You seem pretty sure of yourself, Charles. Why is it so important for you to tell everybody that Jeff is lying? Are you maybe a part of the group that's distributing it, and trying to spread disinformation so people will stop trying to find you? Could that be why you're so adamant?

It's not a conspiracy theory if there's an actual conspiracy.

Jun 16, 05 - 02:59 am Comment from: gio

The fact is that just like shit, leaks happen.

Jun 16, 05 - 04:37 am Comment from: Cody

This is what I have gathared.. all that is out there are ISO's of eiter porn or randome files rared up and made to an ISO. I thikk what the image file people are talking about is a IMG file of OX 10.3 that PearPC will mount and run .. but this is a G3-4 emulator and runs like ass unless you have smoken new hardware. I feel the developments on the new OSX are in proccess but nothing is of any value or in a working state is "leaked". It is very easy to make PearPC fullscreen and take screen shots and use reshack or even photoshop to DR up the picture to show a Genuine Intel Proc. Just my 2cents.

well, a 'friend' of mine has downloaded more than 5 images from different sources all claiming to be mac x86. None have turned out any different from the gnaa and random files already reported. this 'friend' feels it has not leaked yet, but it is inevitable and will happen sometime, it just didnt happen yet.

Jun 19, 05 - 04:50 pm Comment from: Keith Foederl

Hello everyone! I am writing to you all to dispell some rumor and information floating around about Mac OS X Tiger for x86 Intel platforms being leaked on the internet. First off, I was one of the developers that attended the conference. I received my developers kit yesterday and have had at it since I opened the package. 1) The kit has NOT been leaked to the internet - at least not as of today (6/18/05). Anyone who has been boasting that they have it have been lying through their teeth or posting grand Photoshop desktop shots. Up until yesterday I have searched EVERY IRC pirate channel, newsgroup, torrent sites, and P2P app that I could find. YES There are some that say they have it, but they are hoaxes and junk. I cannot say that it will not happen, as I am sure someone will put themselves at risk by uploading the x86 discs / DVD up on the internet. I will tell you all, I will NOT be one of them, so do not even waste your time asking. 2) The kit will NOT run on AMD based systems - I dumped it on my AMD system for giggles and got nothing but errors, instability, and crashes. 3) The Intel kit will work on Intel hardware only, and has support for nVidia and ATI cards. As for network, unless it is an Intel network port, it will not work. USB Keyboard and mouse are required, and you have to use the native OS X drivers for the mouse and keyboard, you cannot install the support software at all - obviously they are not written to work on Intel architecture. Printers, scanners, and other devices of the such do not work; so basically you need a 100% Intel board with the onboard Intel graphics or an nVidia or ATI card and you have a running unit. Anything else causes severe slowness, system instability, or it just won't plain work at all. I am sure someone will post a 'hacked' version eventually, so all you folks out there hoping to score a copy that will work with everything, do not get your hopes up for while. 4) Steve Jobs has already publically stated that the current plan is that the Intel hardware will contain an encrypted chip that will only allow the OS to run on Mac Intel hardware. The OS would have to sustain major hacking to get around this software security. I also read a post out there from some bozo claiming he wrote a BIOS bootloder to fool the OS into thinking it was an Intel BIOS - full of $h** he is. First off he doesn't have it to do that to, and second of all, you can't fool this build At least no one knows how to yet. Just thought this might help everyone - feel free to spread this post to other boards. Sardopsycho.

Question is the mac os x86 on is isohunt a fake or not , does not mean I am download it to play with just a question is it real or fake, also does it come with wireless netacces support or in the full product when it comes out will it support wireless-G type access?

if you can't figureout the address of isohunt , then search it in google but if you can't figure out googles web site then you got problems
but reall I was just wondering if their is a real one or not about this no real x86 pics so far to tell if its real or not, also does the beta mac os x86 run in vmware or have you tryed the real thing in vmware which supports iso cdrom in vmware etc.. your don't really need a real pc to run real os stuff

Wherethe offical mac os x86 webpage if this is real,

shouldn't apple have a x86 home page showing the x86 desktop or system spec for the x86 pentium 4 with geforce info too about the x86 mac tiger spec for it , I only have found leak page type about the x86 no real info from apple commenting on if this software they really did make I know about the unix x86 or linux x86 software that apple did make but no info from apple , if you use google and type mac x86 etc.. you don't find any web sites from apple about a x86 software version , yes it would be nice if apple really did make a x86 version but then softwar and pc hardware makers would have to support it and put out drivers for it like for linksys wireless cards and sound blaster etc.. people that use these would have too download new drivers for their hardware etc joysticks too like usb logitech for games would need drivers for the mac os x86 version too support their usb hardware and like all support usb hard drives too I got a 80gb drive and don't really want too format it into a mac format just too use it on mac x86 , it needs ntfs usb format support which apple will never be able to support because its a microsoft format, so until apple really makes a max x86 , people will contiue to use windows and dual boot linux type os systems.for their web and gaming needs

Jul 02, 05 - 06:50 pm Comment from: unixis linux and like so its opensource gpu

tiger is basted on linux or unix which is opensource and by the gpu thing saying that linux software in which its opensource has to be made downloadable , in which that software use on unix or linux is opensource in which its gpu opensource linux type stuff has to be made downloadable for free in which they are not to make money off of it or at least not moddfyed etc so why can apple make unix tiger os if the opensource things says they have too make it download , I think someone must get the point I am trying too say here

Jul 02, 05 - 07:11 pm Comment from: Why do people do this to other just export those p

ok the one on isohunt is a fake porn image thing it was tested on vmware and the iso is porn , so does that mean that their must be no real x86 version or is their still a real one out their also they should remove the torrent off of isohunt just in case some kid did download it etc.. its bad I don't know why all those people support the file and puting it on torrent is must be those mac hating user that hat against real gaming users that got a pc and linux + windows etc. users , why in the world would you support a fake torrent in the first place? people should go after all the users that support fake files they should cut off their hands etc.. or thro green eggs at them or someting its just wrong to support fake files on the net . period , its like if someone put linux up on the net for mac but really its linux porn os not a real linux os , how would you feels then about torrents supporting porn linux os systems etc.. fake linux or fake lindows etc...

Apple may be forced legally to supply its OSX X86 software.....
At least one analyst believes that Apple is due for a day of reckoning with this strategy, especially now that it plans to move to x86 chips. Nathan Brookwood, principal analyst with Insight 64 in Saratoga, California, thinks it is only a matter of time before someone in the PC industry sues Apple for "tying" its operating system to a specific type of hardware available only from Apple.

Digidyne, then a division of Fairchild Camera and Instrument, successfully pursued a tying case against Data General in the 1980s, in which Data General was rapped for licensing its Nova operating system only to purchasers of its hardware.

"If you sell software that can run on hardware that you do make and hardware that you don't make, you cannot require people to buy your hardware to run your software," Brookwood says. If Dell really wanted to sell Mac OS X hardware, it could force the issue through the legal system, he says.

Anyway I've been using mainframes minis unix windows etc. for over twenty years and really can't see what the fuss is all about. It's basically VHS vs BETAMAX , vhs had all the software although it was inferior to betamax and later v2000 , it won!

Personally i would like to offer my customers a choice of OS on the machines i build but windows is the only platform on which you can do everything. oh yeah and it sucks

Thats pretty gutsy there iknetsbd :D, i have to wonder weither jobs actually released this to the public intentionally to increase hype, then secretly he is creating an all new version of OSX for intel systems that runs alot faster than any form of OS on the market today (cept DOS Maybe) but i have to say that Apple has come a long way considering that they only have about 3% of the market when it comes to computers, i hope they dont totally limit OSX to their systems only because it would be a shame, they should release another version for people who request to buy it as their own risk, as i just bought a $2000 laptop and a $3000 desktop system so im not going to upgrade anytime soon but i would be quite happy to pay $400 to run OSX on both those systems.
