Mossberg: Some openly pornographic podcasts slip onto Apple’s iTunes Music Store
Wednesday, July 06, 2005 - 10:15 AM EST

"Since its introduction last week, the iTunes podcast directory has become very popular, and is the easiest way to get and listen to podcasts. Apple has over 4,000 podcasts listed on iTunes today, and has been overwhelmed with new submissions. I expect that most of the podcasts on the Web will be available from Apple within a month or two," Walter S. Mossberg reports for The Wall Street Journal.

"The only twist to the iTunes podcast experience stems from Apple's decision to ban from its listings podcasts it deems to be pornographic, or to contain hate speech, or copyrighted material, such as music, which the podcaster lacks the right to distribute," Mossberg reports. "Apple also labels some podcasts it accepts as 'Explicit,' if they contain obscenity or sexual content, but aren't considered pornography. To enforce these rules, Apple reviews each submitted podcast. But there are flaws in that system. First of all, it delays the appearance of podcasts for as much as a week after they are submitted. Secondly, it means some podcasts won't ever be included on iTunes, and will have to be located manually. Third, at least in its first week, Apple applied its own standards haphazardly."

Mossberg reports, "In our tests, we found a number of openly pornographic podcasts that had slipped by Apple's reviewers, and others that should have been labeled 'Explicit,' but weren't."

Mossberg explains how to create podcasts and concludes, "It's still way too complicated for the average user to create a podcast. Apple has solved one part of the problem, but more solutions are needed."

B: Health/Relationships/Pod-Porn.com.
um. . .or so I've been told.

Found a hate podcast at Religion and Spirtuality/Islam/The Global Anti-Jihad which I reported yesterday. I reported it as in the wrong classification, didn't know they were going to censor.

I could not imagine trying to listen to a porno podcast. Probably just a bunch of moaning and groaning with an occasional "Oh yes!" Wouldn't the video portion be a bit more stimulating? Of course at my advanced age both would probably give me a heart attack. I'll still to "Radio Margaritaville" and continue to chill.

Should be "I'll still (listen) to "Radio Margaritaville" and continue to chill.

Gawd, I wonder how long this fad will last for...

Possibly the issue is what you consider porn might be someone's idea of good clean fun. For example, I was surprised the Dawn & Drew Show was included because they talk about sex, a lot. But with the exception of the panting intro, I'd never call the show porn. Its just random and funny and seemingly honest about their relationship (and that includes sex).

The Dawn & Drew Show Rulz.

I've always thought Mos' was fairly thorough until now: Where are the links and what are the names of these "pornopods"?

i dunno, it could be quite entertaining, funny even...

He: "Hey, baby! C'mere and sit on the bed"
(SFX of patting on bed- "pat, pat")
She: "Uh... Okay..."
(SFX of really high heeled shoes walking followed by squeaking bedsprings)
He: "Wow! This bed sure is nice! Let's try it out!"
She: "Uh... Okay... Lemme help you get your shirt off...
(SFX: rriiiip!)

etc, etc... think Firesign Theatre and you'll get the point....

Pod-porn.com is funny! On their website they let you upload your own sex stories

The article mentioned GarageBand.com, so I checked it out. I remember that Apple licensed the name "GarageBand" from them, and I thought that was cool, making friends instead of lawsuits.

Well... It appears GarageBand and Apple may have had a falling out. They are now sponsored by MSN Music...

Why not put podcasts in categories, so that people have the choice of listening if they want to or not (excluding illegal utterings of course)?

Why this censorship?

Makes no sense financially and morally.

Is Apple another closet-moral majority case?
