Microsoft releases Messenger for Mac 5.0 for Mac OS X
Tuesday, August 09, 2005 - 10:11 AM EDT

Microsoft has released Messenger for Mac 5.0 for Mac OS X which introduces tabbed viewing, "a new approach for Mac customers who use instant messaging for work and for play," according to Microsoft's press release. Users may simultaneously access corporate and personal Messenger accounts and set a unique user status on each. The personal tab allows users to instant message (IM) with friends and family, while support for Microsoft Office Live Communications Server 2005 enables enterprise customers to IM in a security-enhanced manner via the corporate tab with colleagues inside and out the network.

Messenger for Mac 5.0 takes advantage of integration with Microsoft's enterprise IM solutions. Messenger for Mac 5.0 can be deployed with Live Communications Server 2005 to help improve collaboration for corporate Mac users by streamlining communication and allowing for enhanced messaging security. Corporate messaging sessions run through Live Communications Server 2005 are contained within the corporate firewall and server-side session logging is enabled. Corporate customers can also deploy the Live Communications Server 2005 Public IM Connectivity license, enabling their Mac users to IM with contacts outside the network who use services from AOL, MSN and Yahoo! Live Communications Server 2005 support also introduces
integration with the Global Address List, allowing corporate Mac users to locate contact information and availability status more efficiently than before.

Messenger for Mac 5.0 has an updated design that features a Mac OS(R)-like brushed-metal look and feel in addition to a refined Preferences pane. Version 5.0 also includes new features that allow customers to develop their online personalities with customizable display pictures and the ability to view animated and custom emoticons.

According to the press release, Microsoft Messenger for Mac 5.0 will be available in English, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Spanish and Swedish beginning on Aug. 9, 2005. Customers may download this version for free at http://www.microsoft.com/mac

MacDailyNews Note: Regardless of the Microsoft press release's statement, MSN Messenger for Mac version 5.0 is not available on Microsoft's "Mactopia" site at the time of this article's publication.

Who cares...

IM is so... yesterday.

Aug 09, 05 - 11:27 am Comment from: JC

Yeah. looks like their PR dept got ahead of their development team again.

Aug 09, 05 - 11:29 am Comment from: Al

Microsoft should just concentrate on what they do well and forget about the rest of the bullshit.

Scrap everything else and make Mac Office the best it can be.

Aug 09, 05 - 11:31 am Comment from: masterchappy

why are we not surprised it's not live on the website as of the release of the press release. they jokers can't even realease a stable OS on time.

"IM is so... yesterday."

You said it. AV is the way to go. But if you must chat, Adium is the way to go...

I'll probably download it to see how far it's finally come along, because as I remember, MSN for Windoze was certainly a lot better than for Mac.

MW: Common, as in M$ appeals to the common folk...

Aug 09, 05 - 11:35 am Comment from: Jimbo von Winskinheimer

MS Instant Messenger already sucks. The Windoze version has something called "nudge", where you can send and extremely annoying animation to another user's computer. Someone did that to me and showed me that this is not a tool that I want running on my computer. I'll continue using iChat, thanks.

"Microsoft should just concentrate on what they do well"

So they should concentrate on nothing?! Ha!

Speaking of malware...anyone know how to get Adobe Reader out of my Safari...I installed it two weeks ago to fill out an online form, and now I can't get the Schubert PDF plugin to work. Ugh...I hate Adobe, except for Photoshop.

I've deleted every file on my computer with Adobe, Acrobat, or Reader, and still no luck.

Aug 09, 05 - 11:40 am Comment from: g

DJenurm,

Ever heard of Adium... http://www.adiumx.com

Aug 09, 05 - 11:40 am Comment from: Gard d zada

Cool! Hopefully it will be able to use webcam too!

Aug 09, 05 - 11:43 am Comment from: MacSmiley

Isn't there a difference between MSN Messenger and just plain Messenger, like for businesses?

Aug 09, 05 - 11:56 am Comment from: gMan

g - To get rid of the Acrobat Reader Safari plug-in,
quit Safari and try moving this file to your desktop:
/Library/Internet Plug-ins/AdobePDFViewer.plugin

Aug 09, 05 - 12:21 pm Comment from: LazyEuropean

ofcourse it doesn't support video chat
if that's what you want go for Mercury Messenger
Microsoft will announce webcam support in 2007

I'm looking forward to seeing what the changes are. I'm currently using aMSN, but need something with more features. Apparently aMSN is working on the same features that are promised in MSN 5, but they've gone months without an update.

MSN Messenger for Windows is amazing!!! Integrated games you can play with people you are chatting with, lots of cool emoticons/animations, etc. iChat, while very kewl, is anemic and featureless. The new MSN Messenger doesn't even add audio support, let alone video. It's hopeless and a freaking waste. Seems like there will never be a decent IM for Mac. IM without audio and video is useless, PERIOD!!!

Aug 09, 05 - 12:56 pm Comment from: Eric

They will never release Messenger without it being hobbled ..
It's the only mass standard software they have left ..

I had to buy 2 pcs for my teenagers because of the lack of webcam chat ...

I know a lot of people in the same boat ..

Aug 09, 05 - 12:56 pm Comment from: Crouching Tiger, Hidden Longhorn

Gates & Co. are just yanking our chain. They are trying to drum up some publicity by getting the Mac forums abuzz with "where is it?" chatter to get some news coverage to prove that they still make software...

Aug 09, 05 - 01:02 pm Comment from: redneck bob

for those of you who say that IM is so out of date, you need to realize that a huge amount of the nation does not have high speed internet and video chat is not an option. The whole community, where I am from uses IM all the time and most of us do not have access to fast enough internet to use those other options.

Aug 09, 05 - 01:02 pm Comment from: Mac & PC Guy

Whiners!

Aug 09, 05 - 01:05 pm Comment from: Mystical

Well its now on there website, but i'm getting a message saying. We’re sorry, but we were unable to service your request. This whole thing sucks, and still no webcam support. I will be sticking to Mercury

Aug 09, 05 - 01:15 pm Comment from: Scion

It may be improved - but where oh where is Video chat - my gorgeous iSight sits idle because Microsoft just wont allow mac users to video chat with MSN users....

Aug 09, 05 - 01:24 pm Comment from: Shaking Head

I just downloaded it, relax people it is there. I like the new look. Now stop being a bunch of morons whining about not being able to see a download link.

Aug 09, 05 - 01:26 pm Comment from: Mark Wales

It's up now.

Aug 09, 05 - 01:43 pm Comment from: egarc

Holy Man! I'm currently downloading it at modem speeds! WTF? Is their server that overloaded? MS just has no idea what the Apple user experience represents. I hope the software is worth the 20+ min. download.

Aug 09, 05 - 01:55 pm Comment from: jon tracey

OK dont all rush

the only thing new is the look and feel and the support for corporate messenger other than that its a waste of a download

Hmmm...

Microsoft releasing Macintosh software on the 60th anniversary of Nagasaki?

Steve Jobs telling us we're moving to Intel on June 6th - 61 years after D-Day.

And I switched to the Mac on September 11th, 2004! gulp

AND!!!... We just got a new fridge and stove the other day... on August 6th - 60 years after Hiroshima!!!

*puts on tinfioil hat*

Aug 09, 05 - 02:43 pm Comment from: notatotalsucker

Umm, isn't video conferencing between Mac's and PC's more important than crapola animated icons?? WTF is MS doing these days?

Oh that's right, this is "free" software, so they don't have to make any real effort.

I wish Apple would release iChat for Windows.

You should have just bought them 2 mac minis!

Ichat av is installed from factory, then just buy 2 isight cams and their off.

Aug 10, 05 - 10:20 am Comment from: Tom

Forget feature parity - forget video chat it's not going to happen soon.

Better off switching to Yahoo which DOES support video chat on Macs - if Yahoo can do it why can't Microsoft? - well if MSN was the same on a Mac who'd buy a PC?

Since Microsoft are trying to patent emoticons I think most people are better off just boycotting them.

Aug 11, 05 - 06:46 am Comment from: CDL

Anyone notice that's it's no longer called "MSN Messenger" it's now called "Microsoft Messenger"?

Curious?

Aug 11, 05 - 11:55 am Comment from: hmmmm

Apparently, the reason there will never be Cam in MSN messenger for MAC is that the backend servers use some antiquated Logitech Driver which is only PC compatible - stick with iChat!
