Microsoft officially ends support for Internet Explorer for Mac on December 31, 2005
Sunday, December 18, 2005 - 09:37 PM EST

Microsoft has posted "Important Information For Microsoft Internet Explorer for Mac Users" on their "Mactopia" website:

In June 2003, the Microsoft Macintosh Business Unit announced that Internet Explorer for Mac would undergo no further development, and support would cease in 2005. In accordance with published support lifecycle policies, Microsoft will end support for Internet Explorer for Mac on December 31st, 2005, and will provide no further security or performance updates.

Additionally, as of January 31st, 2006, Internet Explorer for the Mac will no longer be available for download from Mactopia. It is recommended that Macintosh users migrate to more recent web browsing technologies such as Apple's Safari.

marv

"damn. I loved the "save as archive" in IE. Safari doesn't have extras like that. A pity."

Uh, sorry to point out this to you but if you just go to "save as" in safari, it gives you the option right there to save as Web Archive.

Maybe do a little checking before spouting off?

Pity, indeed. This is the type of thing that people do about Apple and Mac all the time. Just assume the worst, state it and don't do any checking prior to being corrected.

It is ok marv,
You are probably a great Mac guy, just having a bad day.

err.. im pretty sure marv was kidding around, unless he's stupidity is way off the scale.

Dec 19, 05 - 07:54 am Comment from: Narnia

Who cares about IE anyway, its not needed, they can shove it where it belongs but if M$ pulls the plug on Media Player I think there might be some trouble.

I can see the headlines now. "Microsoft increases security on the net."

I hear that this is going to be so big that everyone is going to be partying around the world.

re: Audi Customer Care

"We regret the fact that our pages are not yet optimized for use on a Macintosh computer presently.

Please be insured that our Website is..."

Ugh. They don't even care enough to use English correctly. "Presently" means "soon," not "currently." "Insured" is what you get for your car and your home. "Assured" is the word they're looking for. Poor Audi and their ESL Customer Care staff.

And why do they hate Jews, Muslims, and secular folk?

I have been informed by the NSA agent who monitors my electronic transmissions that apparently "presently" can mean "now." My bad.

The MDN linked Apple page on Safari

'Save and Email Web Pages

Now you can view web pages long after they disappear from the Web, complete with images and links, using the new archive feature. Keep them to read later or email to friends and colleagues. Archiving is ideal for saving short-lived web pages such as articles and personal receipts. Links embedded inside the page will continue to work as long as their destination web pages still exist.'

So ... after breaking the web ... it's time to put the weapon away because the threat has dissipated, eh? Good riddance. But don't delude yourselves. Exploder for Windoze will be back with even more standards desecrating features that you will need for hotmale, msg massager and whatnot. Or pigs will fly.

</i>The last update to Mac IE 5 was in june 2003. Nobody should be using this old turd. Download Firefox if you don't like Safari.</i>

Camino or Shiira feel better than Firefox. And as for save as archive in IE, I prefer iCab's.

For the .025% of MacDailyNews visitors still coming here via IE for Mac

No one can be certain about browser stats. I can ID as any of five different browsers (including the dreadful Exploder) with one click.

Dec 19, 05 - 10:05 am Comment from: Shadowself

Unforunately there are many sites (not a few) out there that use IE only techniques.

One glaring example I have to deal with is the U.S. Department of State's Directorate of Defense Trade Controls.
Want to even discuss, let alone ship, anything on the ITAR list (and there are things listed on ITAR you might not expect to be there) with a non U.S. citizen or even a U.S. citizen who is employed by a non U.S. company? You need to get permission from DDTC.
Want to do that over the Internet and thus not pay a beltway bandit $250-$500 per hour to handle the interface for you? Use the electronic system set up by DDTC.
Want to use the electronic system? Use IE. Period. No exceptions.

DDTC has been "going to be" non IE based for a couple of years. Personally, I feel they will become non IE based about six months after Microsoft goes banckrupt and maybe not even then.

(Additionally, several of the pieces of software you must download and use for filing of various documents are Windows only. But that is another, yet losely related, issue.)

While I think IE has become fairly irrelevant in most of what I personally do, there are some sites I visit which absolutely require IE. Some even require IE running on Windows.

My personal opinion is that this is an anti-trust issue. Microsoft gave IE away for free -- and not just on Windows -- to become the demoninant browser. After IE had an over 95% market share and many, many web sites started coding in IE specific capabilities MS killed development of all but Windows based IE. Now MS is killing any form of support for IE except on Windows platforms.

So... if Microsoft can keep web site developers making IE specific sites (enticing them with new IE only capabilities in Windows Vista) then Microsoft keeps their monopoly intact.

Also to those who are questioning the concept of Microsoft supporting IE on the Mac for the past two years by saying, "What support?"... Microsoft has been very glad to take your money for a support phone call if you called them with a Mac IE related question. Over the past two years you could call the support line and pay for a Microsoft support person to talk to you about a problem you were having with IE on the Mac (whether they actually helped you fix the issue or not). As of 1 January 2006 they will just tell you it's no longer supported.

ABOUT BLOODY TIME! Time to remove all the IE for Mac hacks from my CSS and HTML!!!!!!!!!

Dec 19, 05 - 10:43 am Comment from: Hemorrhoid Rage

If you absolutely must go to a crap site that works only in IE, use Safari's Debug menu to fool the site into thinking you're using Windows IE 6.0. It works every time. There is no reason at all to use Mac IE anymore.

"ffwerd, Have a good Holyday and a Happy Christ mass. I love everyone, even the f-word.

How sweet. You do realize though that Jeebus wasn't born in December, right? And that the holiday of Xmas was mainly used by establishment Christianity to co-opt the pagan winter celebrations like Saturnalia and solstice? Personally, I'm not sacrificing any humans this week. I'm not going to gorge myself. And I'm not going to go around singing in the nude.

Dec 19, 05 - 12:58 pm Comment from: effwerd

My NSA monitor is telling me that using "Jeebus" can seem insulting to some Christians. My bad. And thanks, Jack.

Dec 19, 05 - 01:32 pm Comment from: Mark

Hmmm......

Once this new Microsoft browser is released, I bet it'll have some type of proprietary security feature which will lock out Safari and all other browsers from being useful on the net (for banking, shopping, etc).

Dec 19, 05 - 01:34 pm Comment from: darknite

hi effwerd,

While I appreciate you not sacrificing any humans, and especially not singing in the nude, I can't help but feel you may slightly be missing out on the gorging part.

Come to my house in American Fork for some great Holiday eats and lets see if we can remedy your fear-o-festive-food wink

Dec 19, 05 - 03:14 pm Comment from: effwerd

That's a wonderful invitation darknite, I really appreciate it. But, don't conflate disinterest in gorging with fear of festive food. I appreciate the holidays as much as anyone, especially the food. I'm just not into the excessive feasting.

Dec 19, 05 - 07:19 pm Comment from: Johnathan

finelinebob, I totally agree w/your above comments. Mac IE 5 was truly outstanding in its day, and should be given a proper burial.
Honestly, the MacBU team took their mandate to create a Macintosh Internet Explorer and ran with it. It was indeed the first-class browser of its time. It's just a shame that the new IE6:Mac engine never saw the light of day except as part of the ghastly MSN:Mac paid-service-browser. IE could still own a decent share of the Mac market if they wanted to update it, and maintain it to the same standard as v5.

Dec 19, 05 - 08:12 pm Comment from: MacTypeDude

Another day, another dollar from work.
Another day, another M$ type thing-a-ma-bob garbage software destroyed.

I won't deny that it definatly deserves a proper burial. *sets fire to IE and dances nude around it in spirit of christmas*

MDN Magic Word, "Led" as in led those fools still using IE to better browsers!

Dec 19, 05 - 08:30 pm Comment from: Gov sites

Apart from the few online banking issues (we can't all change banks based on our browser preferences), the worst offenders I've seen are Government websites.

Want to go through security screening or manage patients at the VA. Welcome to the world of VetPro. Too many interfaces are tied to IE even though the US government states that it is a security risk. I blame the contractors who develop the rubbish software. Since we're spending the money anyways we could go with a PDF solution, but nope..has to be web-based and that really means 'it only needs internet explorer....oh and sometimes microsoft word'.

IE...the browser that copied netscape, identified itself as same product, then ended up w/ the codebase. What's up w/ all the MacBU praise. The last time I saw someone from that 'unit' speak they looked like they needed a cerebral transplant..talk about a potential switcher.

Unfortunately, IE is STILL a necessary evil (despite all my IE icons pasted on Safari to fool visitors).

MDN, I really like this Microsoft advertisement next to the input box. You think I should buy Microsoft Office Small Business Edition 2003?

Dec 19, 05 - 10:47 pm Comment from: Tempus Fugit

"Microsoft will end support for Internet Explorer for Mac on December 31st, 2005... Additionally, as of January 31st, 2006, Internet Explorer for the Mac will no longer be available for download from Mactopia."

well.... that was anticlimatic, wasn't it?
