Microsoft launches Windows XP campaign with ad made on Apple Mac
Tuesday, April 19, 2005 - 04:18 PM EDT

Microsoft Corp. today kicked off a new global awareness campaign designed to "showcase how people can explore, enhance and pursue their passions with Windows XP and related technology." It's sort of an "ignore that Apple Mac OS X Tiger stuff" misdirection play.

Microsoft so thoughtfully posted one of the new "Start Something" ads that's part of the new global awareness campaign for Microsoft Windows XP and invited users to click the image for high-res version.

Well, various MacDailyNews readers clicked to view the image, downloaded it and checked the file's info by using iPhoto's "Get Info" and other methods to view the file's EXIF information which shows it was created with "Adobe Photoshop CS Macintosh."

As one reader wrote, "Isn't it ironic? A picture launching their big campaign designed to steal the thunder from Apple - was made on a Mac!"

Microsoft's press release can be found here.

The direct link to the "Start Something" ad (7.4MB) is here.

non tech guy: i'm not the most tech savvy guy in the world, so here's a question to all the "geeks" (said with utmost respect: some of my best friends are geeks) on the string...doesn't the tag just indicate on what OS the jpeg file was created? it doesn't actually say that the artwork was created on a mac - or does it?

Apr 20, 05 - 08:31 pm Comment from: Don

The tag does not definitively prove that Microsoft uses Macs (though they might). All we can tell from the tag is that the person who exported it used a Mac, and that person might not work for Microsoft. They probably work at the external design firm Microsoft hired to create their campaign. All Microsoft wants from that company is delivery of their ad. Microsoft might not be anal enough to demand that the design firm they hire be a Windows-only shop. They probably don't have the time to find a Windows-only design firm that's good enough.

Bill Gates gets his car stuck on the highway. He closes all windows and tries restarting it.

It's probably an example of how well the microsoft pool maintenance software at NASA's zero G training centre works [ROFLMAO]

This is funny. I am a Windows Admin, and I love it!!! I have always felt that MS steals everything, but cannot make the change! Still, this is as classic as Gates stating that all software will soon be written on a Mac back in 1984 or so...

Apr 21, 05 - 01:19 am Comment from: Peter

What's the big deal? So some individual artists prefer to choose Mac over Windows as a design platform. Some software developers prefer Windows over Mac too.

You're looking too far into this - MS isn't necessarily "advocating" Macs by having a single employee (a PR worker, at that) using one to design an image.

As has been already said, it comes down to individual employees using the tools they need to get the job done. Oftentimes, it's the software they're used to that gets employed, not necessarily the best.

Apr 21, 05 - 01:56 am Comment from: Bill Gates

Sorry guys, we (MS) screwed up on this.

It was a beta product anyway.

Apr 21, 05 - 02:01 am Comment from: Pat

Let's see...

It's an advertisement and usually companies have other businesses that specialize in making advertisements to create/make those ads.

Even if someone at Microsoft did make them, how is it ironic? They DO make software the Macs right? Or are the Mac versions of Office, et al created on a Windows system and they just hope it works?

Some of you guys seriously need to get help.

Yet another example of little useless things that make mac fanatics feel better. Go ahead, smile and feel good... about nothing.

with regards to Boog's comments about MS stealing. Firstly, many people accuse MS of copying the windows idea from Apple, but fail to mention that Apple copied the idea from Xerox. Also they dont steal software, they just buy the companies to get the software. The only thing they steal is my hard earned cash.

BillyG's comment on Apple being the number 1 computer manufacturer of 2006. Well i would agree with Apple having the better operating system, but from a hardware point of view...no. The G5 is nice, but is not as fast as some other chips on the market. Also the rest of the insides of the Mac are made up of parts found in PCs too. Apple sells a fraction of the computers that Dell or HP sell. From personal experience, the Macs are less reliable on the hardware side. So im thinking that maybe BillyG might be being over optimistic. While Apple continue to be niche, they will never gain any significant market share. So i think Dell will once again be the number 1 computer manufacturer, as they sell more then anyone else (no i dont own a Dell).

I remember the Amiga. I still own two, and used a 50MHz 68060-based A1200 with 32MB of RAM as my main computer up until 1999, when it was time to join the real world and buy a PC (the principal reason was actually for Linux, not Windows - though I ran a triple-boot box with Windows 98 and NT 4.00, both of which I ditched the moment Windows 2000 came out). SAS/C managed to cope with my C/C++ programming assignments at University, but my final-year project required something more than NetBSD was able to offer.

During my time as an Amiga owner, I learned much about computer systems architecture (C.S.A.), multi-processor systems (yep, you read that correctly) and of course 680x0 assembly language. I was almost as fond of the Amiga as my previous computer (a Commodore 64), on which I learned yet more assembly language (6510), hardware interfacing (the user port was extremely educational in this respect) and the basics of C.S.A. that prepared me for programming on the Amiga. I still design and build PCs for other people using this knowledge, and my customers still wonder how my systems manage to beat the crap out of all the Dell/HP/IBM boxes you find in the wild. And no, I do not resort to cheap tricks like overclocking...

I still have several C64s sitting in boxes (results of an old networking project) - I'm keeping them in case I want to teach someone how to *really* program a computer. Yes, the days when 64k was all you had are long over ... but bloated, sloppy programming is the biggest sin as far as I am concerned; if you're going to do it at all, you may as well do it properly.

Probably pointed out.. but reason why a lot of design is done on mac isn't because mac is so easy to use.. but rather that all the schools are saturated with mac. That is the onlt thing that saved apple. Be honest and admit that. Photoshop on mac or pc is the same.. only on pc you can get a powerful system to work with. I like both platforms but I like pc more than mac.

Wow, is nice to see how ignorant people really are. The file formats for photoshop are pretty much the same in both windows and mac. So, when you use iPhoto so read the files information, it extrapolates that it is used with photoshop. And because its on a mac, its going to associate it with the mac version of the software. I checked it on my windows based computer and it doesnt say Photoshop CS macintosh, just photoshop cs. Its nice to see operationg systems that are smarter than thier users!

I r so pwned.

I checked the file in Graphic Converter and it definitely says "... Macintosh", and mjdaly there's no extrapolation going on it's reading EXIF data for crying out loud, it's embedded in the file.

Open the file in a text editor, on the first line is : " ˇÿˇ‡

I hear the managers at Toyota all drive BMWs.
Well, not really, but maybe you get the point.

Apr 22, 05 - 12:31 pm Comment from: MS_Developer

I noticed that all you Apple people don’t have anything insightful or any facts about Microsoft to validate what you are saying. The only point I’ve read, which not valid at all, that could be argued is in regards to viruses and patches. The reason that there are not as many “open source” viruses is because only a small percentage of users run those “OS’s.” It seems to me that it would be a lot easier to code viruses if one had all the code to the core OS. Fortunately for IT professions, the majority of us run all Microsoft products.

Hey mjdaly... I'm running Windows XP. I Dowloaded the file right clicked for the properties and looked in the advanced summary. It clearly states under Creation Software: Adobe Photoshop CS Macintosh. Make sure you know what you're talking about before you write something down.

The Eternal war bewteen MS and Apple. Guys get out of it, windows will never be MAC. They are not talking to mac type of users. They are just getting loads of research for free.

And thats one part of competition, the first guy who sold hot dogs could.nt stop the other from doing so. This saga will continue.

Apr 25, 05 - 09:55 am Comment from: Everyone get a real operating system LINUX

why waist your money on the mac OS or a mac box get LINUX and a custom built machine with decent part in it. Not like the crappy parts in a mac machine. Without the continually locking up versions of MAC OS and Windows. The only good thing i can say about a mac is that they look good. They haven't really got any other good points other then that. The only reason why i still have a windows OS installed is to play games on and you can't even do that on a mac. lol. A very sad operating system MAC.

blah blah blah, all has been said x1000

the real deal is M$ could squash Apple at any time by simply buying them out, firing everyone, and closing the company
drop in the bucket to M$...

no one remembers the $100mill helping hand M$ gave Apple a few years ago?

It looks like Microsoft just fixed the add, the EXIF info now says "Adobe Photoshop CS2 Windows". Couldn't take the fact that it was made on a mac.

Jun 28, 05 - 11:34 am Comment from: omg

i agree, the ad is crap. what else would you expect from an ms worker sitting on a mac using adobe software?
