Meltdown Warning: Windows XP on Intel-based Macs lacks fan driver [UPDATED]
Monday, March 20, 2006 - 05:40 PM EST

Installing Windows XP on your Intel-based Mac can cause problems and not just the Karmic kind:

"According to a thread on MacRumors, the current XP install doesn't include a fan driver, which means your Mac's fan never goes on. That may not be a big issue if you're using an iMac for limited periods in a well-ventilated space, but if you're planning on running XP on a MacBookPro, you may find things getting mighty hot. We're not dissing narf and blanka here; they won the contest and deserve their $13,000. But you may want to be a little careful before trying out their solution at home," Marc Perton reports for Engadget.

More info here.
MacRumors' Windows on a Mac forum here.

[UPDATE: 3/21, 1:35pm: "It appears that the fans in Macs do indeed go on regardless of which OS is running, though there is apparently some concern about how the fans are regulated by software over time. Several commenters have pointed out that even in some earlier Mac models, running non-Apple OSes (i.e., Linux) could result in the fans running constantly, due to a lack of Apple power-management software. So, the good news seems to be that, no, XP won't melt your Mac. The bad news? Your fans may whirr constantly, causing a bit of noise pollution, and possibly draining your batteries before their time if you're using a MacBookPro," Engadget's Marc Perton reports. The bottom line:

It's becoming harder to find the sensible comments on MDN.

The level of trolling gets higher the more it's recognized that Apple is outdoing its useless competitor 'Largehard'.

(And on the fan issue, this is a non-issue, they are controlled from the hardware..)

Mar 21, 06 - 04:52 am Comment from: Random Number Generator

Not too long ago Dvorak (I think it was) predicted that Apple would discard Mac OS X in favour of Windows.

Mar 21, 06 - 05:07 am Comment from: Machead

It's becoming harder to find the sensible comments on MDN.

So I guess 56% of Mac users who now want to run Windows tells us something.

That Mac's with Mac OS X are really entry level learner type computers mostly, and for those too dumb or specialized on a different train of thought processes (creatives) to graduate to Windows analytical complexity.

After all both platforms work essentially the same, one just baby's you better.

Also, you can't generate a cult like fasination with seasoned computer users. You need fresh young or dumb minds who are easily influenced by a cult product.

It all makes sense now. In 30 years of using Mac's I finally see the light.

I really feel used and stupid. No wonder 56% of Mac users now want to run Windows.

Mar 21, 06 - 05:10 am Comment from: Pete

It also explains Mac's 3-4% market share.

Entry level computers from a company that specializes in the educational market.

Mar 21, 06 - 05:24 am Comment from: Pornstar

That explains why Apple has never really produced a inexpensive, open architecture, upgradable computer like a $600 Dell Tower.

All of Apple's computers are non upgradable except the expensive towers.

Sure they got PowerMac's for the creative pro's, but now that's a mute point since they changed processors to Intel. If Apple produces their creative software for Windows PC's that will do in the hardware very nicely.

I think that's what's Apple is up to, to transition to a software company and a PC vendor with Vista.

Windows is going to become easier and more secure to use, which will negate the need for Mac OS X in the marketplace.

So many schools are switching their Mac's over to Windows PC's "to train the kids in what's used in the real world" that now Mac's are delegated to be used by kindergarden and first graders.

The color and style difference between the PowerMac/Powerbook line and everything else Apple makes makes a lot of sense too.

OMG! Apple's entire marketing plan is dissolving before our very eyes!

So being a Apple user = A or B

A: your a computer newbie

B: your too much of a dumb ass to learn Windows

i see little point in forcing windows on a mac, i have a seperate machine just for windows, i purposely keep them seperate so should anything happen to my "games" machine i can just format it and put windows back on with out loosing anything important

Thanks for demonstrating my point so clearly.

I rest my case...

Mar 21, 06 - 08:55 am Comment from: wannabe

Since this story turned out to be false, MDN should change the headline to "trolls think they are witty, film at 11"

Mar 21, 06 - 09:04 am Comment from: Queezzie

If macs had the newest games to run (the games come out the same time for macs and pcs) few would be interested in running windows on their mac.

Steve doesn´t play computer games, steve doesn´t get computer gamers. Until Steve does, Apple will never increase its market share.

Mike said, "I'm running XP on my Mac
I still consider myself a Mac user.
Mac OS X is a stupid OS.
I'm running twice as many software titles as before.
I'll never go back to Mac OS X.
I'll buy a Visa PC when it comes out.
There's nothing you can do to stop me."

Mike, Mike, Mike - we don't want to stop you.
You go ahead and buy Mac hardware and install whatever you like on it, install Linux for all we care.

No matter what you do, it'll still register as a Mac sale in the market share numbers. Which will grow our market share, and more developers will be attracted to the platform.

Yeah, you teach us Mac users a lesson by buying Mac hardware and increasing Apple's market share!

God, Windows users are such morons.

Macdude said, "There you have it, over 56% of Mac users would switch to Windows RIGHT NOW"

No it doesn't, look again. Over 56% of Mac users would find it, "important to run Windows natively on the Intel Mac."

This means that they would like to run Windows OS at full speed alongside the Mac OS. Where do you find 'switching' in this?

I have to use a Sony Vaio Windows PC laptop alongside the other Mac's in my studio to access the company's Windows XP only stock control database, and I would love to kick this PC out as it's hardware is so unreliable. It's about a year old and so far, it's CD tray & trackpad no longer function, and I'm now told (by our wonderful PC IT overlords) that the ethernet port is on its way out.

So there YOU have, I need to access the Windows OS on Mac hardware because:

1) I'm FORCED to use a Windows program
2) I find Mac hardware more reliable.

No switching required. Please refrain from airing your own personal fantasies regarding legions of Mac users suddenly switching to Windows & please engage your brain before typing in future.

Mar 21, 06 - 10:55 am Comment from: DistantThunder

All the people saying the end is near for OS X are crazy. OS X is the best thing about Macs, and is the number one reason I use them, and is a main reason why lots of people use them. The Mac hardware (usually) is solid and reliable, but alone it is not a compelling reason to buy a Mac for the average user. OS X, iLife, and a host of well-designed third party applications are the reason most people like Macs, as well as the absence of formidable virus threats, BSDs, an un-user-friendly OS, and other Windows quirks and shortcomings.

I have a Dell with XP, and Virtual PC on a PowerBook. I wouldn't mind having a dual-boot Intel MacBook, provided I didn't run out of HD space for my OS X apps. But there is no way most Mac users would go back to the nightmare that is called Windows for their general computing needs. Personally I would use it for a few special programs that don't run on the Mac, and I can envision others booting into Windows to play games, etc.

But the fact XP can run on Intel Macs does not spell the end for OS X. It is just another interesting and positive development for those who would like to run both.

Mar 21, 06 - 11:23 am Comment from: MacDude

What you dumb jackarses don't realize is

If Mac's can dual boot Windows, there is no incentive for developers to code for Mac OS X.

What's pretty well functioning OS if there is no third party software for it?

Eventually dual booting will get old very fast and you'll just accept Windows.

So 56% of you are already sellouts, and just like I said Vista will be your master.

Didn't beleive me huh?

Mar 21, 06 - 12:17 pm Comment from: gagravaar

MacDude, I refer you to my previous answer.

We aren't sellouts, we just want to chuck out PC hardware and run Windows apps alongside the Mac OS, on Mac hardware, natively.

The poll you originally quoted said nothing about dual-booting, I think what most of the 56% want is to run the odd Windows app (that they are FORCED to use) occasionally without a speed penalty.

If you think through your comment, it doesn't matter if Mac's can dual boot Windows, whatever OS you decide to run on it it will register as a Mac sale, and it will be one more Mac to add to the market share numbers.

Mac's market share will then go up, and more developers will be attracted to the platform because they will assume that all those Mac's sold are running the Mac OS, in the same way they assume that all Windows PC's sold run Windows, instead of what a large % do, and erase the hard drive and install Linux.

Mar 21, 06 - 01:30 pm Comment from: MacWrath

MacDude: your math skills are as advanced as your langquage skills... no one is switching, your 50 + % figure is flawed beyond the point that even a Windows user could reasonably be expected to compute (please take a math course or two before you graduate from high school - statistics wouldn't be a bad idea).

And finally for the others the word is MOOT not mute (like your opinions which I can only assume are culled from people like Dvorak and his ilk). But then I woudn't expect you all to figure that seeing that you are PC users.

And another thing... just a hunch but I seriously doubt anyone on this forum is actually running XP on a Mac. Doesn't seem to be enough brain power here from the Windows side to get the virus going. Just MTCW.

Mar 21, 06 - 03:45 pm Comment from: DistantThunder

MacDude: "If Mac's can dual boot Windows, there is no incentive for developers to code for Mac OS X."

That is just plain false. Developers will develop for whatever platform their customers demand. If one developer doesn't, another will, and the one who didn't will fall behind. Besides that, some developers intrinsically prefer developing for OS X, almost to the point of it being an issue of ethics (but more frequently, those ones just prefer OS X), and would not even consider developing for Windows.

Developers for the Mac know there clients will not accept "just boot into [buggy, flawed, not officially supported] Windows" on the Mac, and because they know this, they will continue to give us what we want and demand ... hardware-native and OS X-native Mac software.
