Macs and viruses: the true story
Tuesday, May 02, 2006 - 04:39 PM EST

"There was a great story yesterday by 'technology writer' Dan Goodin at the Associated Press, and because it was from the AP, we can read it on several sites," John Gruber writes for Daring Fireball. "What’s great about an AP story like this one is that if you’re only paying attention to the headlines, it creates the impression that there are multiple reports from all over the web corroborating the same point, when in fact it’s just one story, repeated many times over by news publications that regurgitate whatever comes in over the AP wire."

"Journalism this good deserves a close analysis," Gruber writes before providing said analysis with gusto.

"With Apple yesterday launching a new television ad campaign that draws specific, pointed attention to the fact that Macs are not besieged by malware — this sort of bogus 'trend piece' that purposefully conflates the issues of whether Macs are in theory potentially vulnerable to malware (yes) with whether Macs are in reality under attack (no) is just what the doctor ordered," Gruber writes.

"If Goodin wanted to be reasonable or accurate, he could have written a story titled 'Some Guy Double-Clicked a Trojan Horse Virus for Mac OS X but It Didn’t Actually Spread to Anyone Else,' but what kind of story would that be? OK, it’d be a true story, but it wouldn’t be a good story," Gruber writes. "No one would have linked to such a story except to make fun of it: What would be the point of making a big stink out of one guy who got hit by a Mac OS X Trojan horse — which was so poorly written that it couldn’t even successfully spread to another computer — when there are hundreds of thousands (millions?) of Windows users suffering from malware every single day? What good journalism calls for is taking that one guy, and writing an article that presents his episode as though it were part of a trend of increasing Mac virus attacks. No one is going to make fun of Dan Goodin — or the Associated Press, or the dozens of reputable news outlets that ran the story — for that."

Full article, highly recommended, here.

MacDailyNews Take: The Mac Web is a better place thanks to John Gruber's writings.

Mac Virus Protection - Defending Against the Unknown

What to do?! What to do?!

This is VERY easy to figure out and implement.
Go down to (or call) your nearest Apple Store and ask them what they use to protect their own in-house Macs, the ones that are open to the general public and have full access to the internet. They will say to just turn on your built-in Firewall. They be glad to spend the 10 seconds to show you how to do it. It even as a cool "Stealth Mode" as an advanced option. THAT'S IT!!!

When Apple decides to protect its own corporately owned Macs, then I will, too. But, until then, I do not waste one second of my time worrying about the sky falling. That's why I bought a Mac.

RELAX!

Personally... I'm grateful that so many of these hacks are willing to nominate themselves for the Chicken Little Security award.

Why? Because if you look at the 7-8 mos between now and December, there's the perfect amount of time for the public to sort the good info from the bad and make their home computer upgrade decisions... just in time for the xmas buying season.

So, without further ado, I present the tripe du jour:

"Benjamin Daines was browsing the Web when he clicked on a series of links that promised pictures of an unreleased update to his computer's operating system."

What I do not understand is why in the world would Mr Daines try to get a MAC OS System update from anywhere other than the "Software Update" from Apple?

Peter: Well, I'm gettin' something really special too. And by special I don't mean special like that Kleinaman boy down the street. More special like... like Special K, the cereal. Hey, what do they do with the regular K? And for that matter, what ever happend to K. Ballard? You know, if you said mallard and you had a cold, it would sound like ballard.

Brian: Do you listen to yourself when you talk?

Peter: I drift in and out.

The X11 security issue is a local user vunerability. This means you have to have a malicious local user who has a user account on your machine, or has somehow acquired a log in, for it to be a problem.

It is completely unrelated to viruses.

If you are the only person who uses your computer or all the people who use the computer are trustworthy its not an issue.

May 03, 06 - 09:24 am Comment from: pog

I should also note that it doesn't affect the version of X11 that ships with Macs, because its too old!

I love it when liberals run around and try to compare things that they know nothing about. Let's dissect.

How did John Kerry get his purple hearts? Oh yeah, one of them was given for shrapnel embedded in his arm. That's real courage.

But if that's not enough, John Kerry threw his medals away! Only they turned out to be not his medals, but just some medals meant to make a good media splash.

Oh, and let's not forget the Winter Soldier tribunal testimony, where John Kerry knowingly lied about Nam and made Vietnam vets out to be murderers, torturers, and so forth. And hey if you want John Kerry's book about all of this, The New Soldier, you can't have it. Kerry forbids its republication.

And John Kerry's memory seems to be awfully fuzzy about when and where he was at certain times in 'Nam. He gets dates wrong by entire years.

You can claim "fog of war", but if you don't know your basic history -- and you were there, supposedly -- why make that a centerpiece of your campaign? And furthermore, why make your "duty to country" such a big deal when your own words and actions supported the North Vietnamese? They freaking broadcasted Kerry's words in the Hanoi Hilton!

John Kerry's story was weak, filled with holes, and patched together with lies. He's been lying since 'Nam and he hasn't stopped. Just watch him dance around like a marionette taking any position that he can. This man has single-handedly made the Democrat party a laughingstock (I mean, if AlGore, Clinton, Reno, and Dean weren't damage enough!). He voted for the war before he voted against it? Please. The man is his own worst enemy.

even though he has been a tad alarmist, Al Jazzoo has raised some points that we should think about.

he's stated that there are viruses that are shipped on Macs. this is something that i wasn't aware of and information that i think all of us could use. please, tell us what these viruses are called or how we may locate them on our machines so that we may remove them.

in the event that we are infected what symptoms should we look out for and how does it affect our machines?

are they self propagating? in what way do these viruses propogate?

if the malware affects MS 'wares couldn't i just use Appleworks or NeoOffice to avoid that?

and lastly, if they aren't OS X viruses, why should i be concened? i've had plenty of Windows user friends who send me crappy, infected files and they didnt seem too worried about whether or not they infected Macs.

Ilove it when liberals run around and try to compare things that they know nothing about. Let's dissect.

...and this relates to viruses on Macintosh how?? unless it relates to the original topic in some manner, shape or form i, personally, could care less what your political opinions, no matter how accurate, are.
what does it have to do with Macs and viruses?

May 03, 06 - 12:33 pm Comment from: Ray

Well that is nothing.

That one guy shipped his Mac to Europe and had his friend ship it to the middle east and then the mac was shipped to China. Tomorrow that Mac arrives back in the U.S.

AP already pre-released the headline:
"Mac Virus goes world wide!"

"Poster":

I was actually talking about the way people used FUD when the facts don't back them up.

Since Windows XP has a gazillion viruses and adware vulnerabilites, people are defending it by spreading FUD about Apple.

Since Bush had no military experience (other than conveniently getting into the national guard), and since Kerry had earned a silver star, a bronze star, and three purple hearts while serving in Vietnam, the FUD smear campaign was launched.

Remember when Cheney warned that if Kerry was elected, the danger would be that the terrorists would strike? Remember the TV commercial with the wolves running through the dark woods, reminding us we need a "strong" leader like Bush? Look at http://www.ready.gov - notice the terror alert level is still at "elevated", which it has never been lower than.

Even Apple's latest commercials use FUD - you can absolutely hook up the latest digital cameras to a Windows XP SP2 computer. Windows computers don't randomly freeze up unless they have faulty components. Windows computers typically come with lots of bundled software.

This whole FUD thing is cowardly and pathetic, no matter who is doing it.
