Dvorak: Key to Apple success was simply Steve Jobs making hot looking products
Wednesday, July 05, 2006 - 05:48 PM EST

While wondering if General Motors can learn something from Apple, John C. Dvorak writes, "Let's look at what Steve Jobs did when he took over the reins of Apple. In essence it wasn't much except add life and desirability in the form of modern industrial design to a flagging product line."

"The key to the Apple success story under Jobs was simply Steve Jobs making the product -- a computer, then an MP3 player -- look appealing. It was a top-down demand," Dvorak writes. "While not a designer by training he, like Steve Jobs, knows what he likes, and what he likes is hot looking."

Full article here.

MacDailyNews Take: By now, we all know that Dvorak probably doesn't really think that Apple is merely all about exterior product design. We all know that Dvorak probably is just discounting Apple's advanced operating systems and elegant software offerings just to make some twisted point and maybe to grab a little extra traffic to his article.

We all know that Apple's success also lies inside the elegant exteriors of their products. We all know that Apple's success is due to obsessive attention to detail in every area, not just exterior design.

As Dvorak himself admits in the video clip below, it's all part of a formula that now strangely seems to be in use in an article about GM. We guess that because Dvorak can no longer credibly write about Apple, he thinks he can credibly write about car companies. He'd be wrong: once an admitted troll, always an admitted troll.

The funny thing is, John, we don't know the difference between when you're writing what you believe and when you're writing just to generate hits. Who's laughing now? Why don't you deconstruct for us how to recover your credibility once you've blown it for vanity's sake, you Hawaiian-shirted weasel?

Dork: Key to my success in geting hits is blowing hot air through my a$$!!

Jul 05, 06 - 04:55 pm Comment from: Bob Jones

Why not just ignore Dvorak instead of giving him the hits?

Jul 05, 06 - 04:57 pm Comment from: coolfactor

The user experience is the ticket.

Jul 05, 06 - 04:58 pm Comment from: Luke

I, for one, think that articles citing this bald fool need not be posted anymore.

Jul 05, 06 - 04:59 pm Comment from: NewType

Don't trust Dvorak. Whenever he writes about Macs or Apple, he is doing so to string everyone along. No doubt his next article will be about Apple's useless vanity or something.

Jul 05, 06 - 04:59 pm Comment from: MacZeus

Sheesh.. Just ignore the schmuck.. He knows hes lost all credibility with the Mac community and now he's trying to win it back.. He's baiting us.. It's a trap.

JUST IGNORE HIM. Read his articles here if you must, but NEVER link to his site..

Jul 05, 06 - 05:02 pm Comment from: JD

He wants his hits back! Don't give them to him.

Jul 05, 06 - 05:02 pm Comment from: Ouch

Bob Jones,

Dvorak would love that, wouldn't he? He'd love for everyone to forget how he blew what credibility he had because he just had to prove how "smart" he was by baiting people.

Bravo, MacDailyNews! NEVER EVER let up on him.

Note to MarketWatch honchos: your credibility is suffering with that buffoon on the payroll. How long until you rectify this unfortunate situation. I want to be able to trust MarketWatch, not question their writers' motives.

Jul 05, 06 - 05:06 pm Comment from: Brett

Dvorak F'd up big time and now he's paying the price. The best we can do is not give him his readership.

Jul 05, 06 - 05:11 pm Comment from: For the love of Jobs

You people calling for MDN to ignore Dvorak don't get it.

You should instead be thanking MDN for holding his feet to the fire he set himself.

Ouch gets it. Michael gets it. Brett gets it. Are you sure the rest of you are Mac users?

Jul 05, 06 - 05:18 pm Comment from: We do get it...

For the love of Jobs,

You are the one who doesn't get it.

NO one is calling MDN. We are thankful that MDN is posting his article here, that way we don't have to link to Dvoraks site directly. MDN is causing Dvorak to lose a lot of hits by posting his articles directly on these MDN pages.

READ IT HERE. Just don't click the link for the full article.

Jul 05, 06 - 05:21 pm Comment from: Gregg Thurman

Hey MDN, get a clue. Dvorak knows that you pick up his articles. He's counting on you to write something about the stupidity of his thoughts, which leads to a bunch of hits on his site.

You want to muzzle the idiot? Take 6 months off and don't report on his articles. If the entire Mac community avoided him for 6 months, he'd have to do actual research to get hits.

Imagine that. A journalist that does research. I must be in Disneyland.

Jul 05, 06 - 05:25 pm Comment from: FactChecker

Gregg,

Obviously, MDN does not drive 100% of Dvorak's hits. Probably more like less than 1%. MDN puts the max hurt on Dvorak by chomping down on his leg and never letting go, not by ignoring him.

Jul 05, 06 - 05:29 pm Comment from: For the love of Jobs

If people above did not write the following, I apologize:

"Why not just ignore Dvorak instead of giving him the hits?"
"I, for one, think that articles citing this bald fool need not be posted anymore."

Otherwise, I don't apologize and I still say some of you aren't anywhere near smart enough to be Mac users.

Jul 05, 06 - 05:33 pm Comment from: mike

putz. he gutted the product line, and introduced CRAZY looking designs. That's not easy to do.

not even the static of Channel Z can beat the tired talk of Dvorak

Jul 05, 06 - 05:37 pm Comment from: Drunk Cheney

I don't care what he says - whatever it is -is inconsequential.

Jul 05, 06 - 05:42 pm Comment from: NewType

MDN, here's a suggestion - please consider it.

For obvious hit trollers like Dvorak, why not avoid putting a clickable link to the original article? Instead, just put the URL in text so people can manually cut and paste it into their brower address bar should they choose. A clickable link is a professional courtesy that self-admitted scammers like Dvorak do not deserve.

It solves the problem of sending hits to these disingenous trollers while preserving the ability for people to actually seek out the original article if they really wanted to refer to it. Seems like a solution to me.

Jul 05, 06 - 05:44 pm Comment from: MacBill

Dvorak is a weasel!!!!!!!

Jul 05, 06 - 05:46 pm Comment from: Mac Daddy

Dvorak...isn't that also the name of a keyboard layout that failed?

Jul 05, 06 - 05:50 pm Comment from: macromancer

Good design isn't just about making pretty boxes, it's about creating a easy to use product that also appeals to its user aesthetically. Creating a good appearance and usability synergy is part of the Apple brand and Apple pulls it off brilliantly.

The mistake the competitors make is thinking that good design is just about a pretty box. They can't even seem to get that part right.

Jul 05, 06 - 05:50 pm Comment from: me

I, for one, think that articles citing this bald fool need not be posted anymore.

Me too...

Jul 05, 06 - 05:59 pm Comment from: MikeK

I used to read all the Dvorak columns posted about here, but no longer. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.

Funny, back in the mid-1980s, which I still used PCs, I used to read Dvorak on the inside back page of PC Magazine and thought he was the best. Now? Not so much.

HE IS A CYBERSLUT

Don't give him the hits.

MDN MW: straight (is he?)

Jul 05, 06 - 06:35 pm Comment from: Peter

Actually, I ran into the article from a different direction than here, but after reading it, I agree with the man.

The article in question is more about GM than it is about Apple, but he's legitimately suggesting that GM take a page from Apple. Of course, I think Chrysler beat poor old GM to the punch.

Part of the issue GM has is getting people to at least come in to their dealerships. Design will help do that. Like the iMac, the Pontiac Solstice has made people actually stop and think about buying a Pontiac car. People come into the dealership to see it. They may decide to buy, they may decide not to buy, but it makes people actually consider it and for GM, that's half the battle right there. Heck, I stopped at the local Pontiac dealership when they got one in and while I was there, I saw a few other people with Mazdas and Nissans checking it out.

All else being equal, the cooler looking car will win most of the time. You give a person a choice between a Honda Accord and a cool-looking car with about the same capabilities for the same price, people will buy the cool-looking car.

That said, the problem with design is that you have to be on the leading edge. The Chevy HHR is an obvious rip-off of the Chrysler PT Cruiser. Nobody's going to go out of their way to see the rip-off when they can see the real deal at their Chrysler dealer. Personally, even if I don't like the design, I have more respect for a car company that "pushes the envelope" than one that plays it safe making dull boring transportation.

Dvorak is right in that interesting designs got the general public back interested in Apple in 1998. People who would not have considered a Macintosh in 1998 suddenly wanted to see one! Like GM, that was Apple's battle--making people actually consider buying a Mac! And when they did that, they'll be more interested in hearing the rational reasons why they should buy one.

Jul 05, 06 - 06:45 pm Comment from: Stop

MDN needs to stop posting articles from Dvorak. We all know he has lost credibility, tremendously. We all know it's a lot of fun to say the same thing about every Dvorak article. But, let's show some restraint, and beat him at his own game.

Jul 05, 06 - 06:57 pm Comment from: Trevor

This website is called Mac Daily News, NOT Mac Daily News from journalists that we like and/or approve of.

MDN should continue to post any and all Apple and Mac related stories, regardless of what we think of the journalist or author. No one benfits from CENSORSHIP.

If you don't like Dvorak and don't want to give him a hit, then don't link to his original story. If you don't care about giving him a hit, then feel free to link to his story.. It's as simple as that. The choice is yours. Don't blame MDN for posting a Mac related story on a Mac related website.

Jul 05, 06 - 06:59 pm Comment from: tHE dUDE

Peter, good job. You get the prize for unconventional thinking on MDN. The rest of you just argued over what MDN should do about Dvorak. Like it matters.

MDN, you missed the point of Dvorak's article and so your take is meaningless.

All that being said, Dvorak is a tool.

Jul 05, 06 - 08:04 pm Comment from: ...

Really? MDN does what it should do by "biting on the leg and never letting go" concerning Dvorak?

A little lesson:
HE DOESN'T CARE.

Bash him all you like, insult him all you like, prove he baits people, say he's a serial killer and a child molestor for God's sake and he will pay you absolutely no mind.

It isn't "censorship". If you actually want to read Dvorak's articles, read his articles on his own site.
Every day.
It's THAT simple. If you people want to read it, then maybe he deserves the hits; at least he knows how to make people want to read his articles.
How many times has Dvorak said this exact same thing in a different form? Apple is this, Apple is that. Is this new? No. Is it significant? No.
Tell me I shouldn't care, tell me it's "my choice", but I will continue to subscribe to the MDN feed for as long as I am interested in Apple and Mac news. Why? Because there are some REALLY, REALLY good articles on here regularly. But the fact that I have to filter through all this Dvorak/Enderle/Thurrott/whatever analyst crap every day is tiring.
Like it?
Read it.
He deserves the hits if you like it. What do you think journalists do?
Make people like their articles.
After all, it's your choice.

Jul 05, 06 - 08:05 pm Comment from: me

If MDN posts one more article from this man. If you post one more link form this man.

I WILL DELETE MY BOOKMARK AND NEVER COME BACK TO MDN.

Stop already. MDN is the enablere for sure. You're nuts. I may not come back here just from this post. And I come to MDN many, many times first for Apple news. Back to MacNN for me I think.

MDN is beyond me to keep posting his lies.

Jul 05, 06 - 08:09 pm Comment from: MDN Just As Guilty as Dvorak in trolling for hits!

You posted it. You know he's trolling for hits. Yet you still post comments about what he is saying. You too are fishing for hits for your advertisers on this page. MDN is no better than Dvorak. You both are looking to maximize hits to maximize ad revenue.

Jul 05, 06 - 09:09 pm Comment from: Jack

dovorak.org/blog is where you can vent your spleen. He will like that even better.

This is the last time I'm going to read his propaganda, here orr anywhere. If we really want to miff him of we'll just ignore him. The other guy too. You know they're checking these sites also, that's human nature, but's sad when you measure your worth that way. Let's all boycott them.

Jul 05, 06 - 10:41 pm Comment from: MacRaven

I was very good...I did NOT click on the link to Dvorak's site. I just read the MDN take. Don't want to give this turkey any hit numbers anymore.

Pontiac was STUPID! Everyone else was doing retro, and successfully! The PT Cruiser, latest Mustang, and a brief sporting looking Thunderbird (instead of the boat it became in the 1980's. Pontiac refused to go retro on the new GTO. They deserve customers to go elsewhere. The GTO was an incredible car and Pontiac missed one of the biggest retro sales opportunities of all time. Stupid!

What the hell isn't? Or does Dvorak drive to work every day in a Model T Ford?

Jul 06, 06 - 05:34 pm Comment from: Slyrobber

DUH!!!, About Dvoraks comments this for GM would only be half the way. I think they already make sexy cars to some extent even if this doesn't extent throughout GM's offering. The other half though is dependability. Alas the Japanese rivals have become less reliable and cheaper while Gm has become a little more like Japanese though not nearly enough. Perhaps one I forgot to mention would be innovation and on that front On-Star just doesn't cut it.
