Dumbstruck: Lawn-mowing teen struck by lightning, blames Apple iPod
Friday, July 07, 2006 - 10:44 AM EDT

One Jason Bunch was listening to Metallica on his iPod while mowing the lawn outside his Castle Rock (Colorado) home Sunday afternoon when lightning hit him.

Ars Technica's Jacqui Cheng reports that "the teen's ears, face, and neck were burned along where his iPod's cord was hanging, all the way down to his hip where the iPod was. The reasoning that Mr. Bunch and his mother are using to connect the iPod with the lightning strike is a little bit of a stretch, though. They claim that the iPod is what attracted the lightning to him, as there were taller things around him (such as trees) that were not struck. Experts, however, disagree with this reasoning:"

"There is no scientific evidence to show that lightning is 'attracted' to items like an iPod. However, if someone wearing earbuds is struck, current may travel along the wires into the ears," said Gregory Stewart of the Denver-based Lightning Reference Center... Objects such as loose change in victims' pockets have left first- and second-degree burns after a lightning strike, Stewart said.

"Rest assured, loyal iPod users, that listening to your iPod out in the middle of a lightning storm isn't going to increase your chances of being struck by lightning," Cheng reports.

Full article with links, photo of the scorched teen, and a bit about Cheng's "dull hope that this media bubble around Mr. Bunch and his lightning-struck iPod doesn't turn into some crazy lawsuit against Apple for manufacturing electronic killing machines that play awesome music," here.

MacDailyNews Take: Bunch and his mother believe the iPod acted as an antenna, drawing the lightning to him, thereby giving a whole new meaning to the word "dumbstruck."

Just a few weeks ago we had a motorcycle rider struck by lightning in Colorado during his afternoon drive home. I never did find out if it was the lightning or the crash that killed him but I would definitely have to blame Yamaha for making a motorcycle that attracts lightning. Perhaps he had a Windows laptop in his saddlebag?

Jul 07, 06 - 10:53 am Comment from: Malthus

Listening to Metallica? Must have been an act of God...

Jul 07, 06 - 10:55 am Comment from: iDon't

He should play the lottery. He has a good chance of wining now.

Jul 07, 06 - 10:55 am Comment from: gforce

MORON!!!!!!!!! Has nothing to do with the big metal lawnmower with moving blades creating static!

Jul 07, 06 - 11:02 am Comment from: Tommy Boy

Can an iPod's volume be set high enough to drown out the sound of thunder?

Jul 07, 06 - 11:03 am Comment from: AG Pennypacker

In other news: large piles of shit proven to attract large bolts of lightning.

Jul 07, 06 - 11:04 am Comment from: clyde

Wow. At least I could understand if it was an iRiver...

Jul 07, 06 - 11:05 am Comment from: DLMeyer

Malthus had it right ... an Act Of God, a warning to all those who would listen to Metallica - especially while using power tools such as a lawn mower. The burns along the route between the buds and the iPod? Duh! The metal heated up while helping the dufus by routing the electricity around, rather than through his body.

stableos, I've never ridden a bike - from my first single-speed through my last rice-burner - that would provide a path between my head and the road. There's always that last inch (or two, or three) of rubber in between. I can certainly see how a near-strike could both leave burns and cause you to lose control of your bike, your bowels, your mind ... and think you were actually struck, if you survived.

Jul 07, 06 - 11:16 am Comment from: mudflapper

Metallica? Ride The Lightening indeed.

Jul 07, 06 - 11:19 am Comment from: Queezzie

I do hope he is feeling better and fully recovers. That would be a terrible thing to happen to get hit by lightening.

--------

Why people here would make fun of another´s person´s misfortune and gloat over his injury I have no idea. Some of you people need to readjust your thinking.

Jul 07, 06 - 11:20 am Comment from: mac user 47

This only happened because there wasn't a "CAUTION: THIS DEVICE MAY ATTRACT LIGHTNING!" sticker...

Jul 07, 06 - 11:21 am Comment from: pr

Wait until the new microsoft player comes out. I predict earthquakes, floods, and fits of pique.

Jul 07, 06 - 11:23 am Comment from: Tempus Fugit

instead of looking for someone/something to blame for their own stupidity they should be thanking the stars above that they survived the ordeal!! not to mention that he now has bragging rights ("Lookit! I wuz struck by lightnin'!") and needn't worry about being struck by lightning again.... that is unless you're stupid enough to mow the lawn in the face of another oncoming storm.

Jul 07, 06 - 11:24 am Comment from: Thorin

Yeah, and New Orleans got hit by Katrina because

the storm was attracted to crawfish, gumbo, and

cross-dressers. smirk

Jul 07, 06 - 11:25 am Comment from: sosumi

Clearly Metallica should be hold responsible for this, not Apple.

Jul 07, 06 - 11:26 am Comment from: dennis

"Today, July 7th, 2001 Apple discontinued the Cube."

Wait a minute! You're telling me the last 5 years of my life were one long dream? Thank God. I think I'll go to New York and visit the World Trade Center. You're not going to believe the nightmare I had!

Jul 07, 06 - 11:27 am Comment from: DakRoland

I was struck by lightning while listening to my iPod, too! I remember I heard God saying "Give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasures in Heaven." So I did, but dagnabit, it was only Art on the walkie-talkie saying "Give me some more, and I'll shout when it measures eleven." That'll learn me to listen to my iPod while feeding cable in from the roof during a thunderstorm....

Jul 07, 06 - 11:30 am Comment from: gforce is an idiot

Lawnmower blades making static attracted the lightning?"" AHAHAHAHAhahahaha ha ha hahHAahahahahah ahhahahhaha ahahahahahaha

Jul 07, 06 - 11:36 am Comment from: America's Next Top Sheep

Shocking!

Jul 07, 06 - 11:37 am Comment from: Beans

It actually probably saved his life, cause ing the current to go around his body partially as opposed to through him. And oh, BTW, I am sure the lawnmower didn't attract anything either. Lightning comes up from the ground as well.

Jul 07, 06 - 11:43 am Comment from: effwerd

You left out the part where the doc said the iPod probably saved the kid's life.

Jul 07, 06 - 11:56 am Comment from: Georgy Porgy

I get struck by lightning every time I listen to heavy metal.
I get blue skies every time I listen to Kenny G.
I get rain every time I listen to Sara McLaughlin.
I get sunshine every time I listen to Shania Twain.

Do ya'll think I can also somehow get some money because of this?

Jul 07, 06 - 11:56 am Comment from: Gene

Most likley the earphone cord shunted the majority of the current around his heart. He should be so lucky. Hope he recovers.

(It only takes 50 milliamps directly through your heart to stop it)

Jul 07, 06 - 11:58 am Comment from: macromancer

"Today, July 7th, 2001 Apple discontinued the Cube. Worst day in history ever!"

MIne seems to still be running fine despite the media's insistence they were defective.

Quezzie no one here is making fun that he actually got struck, just that he has the stupidity to blame it on his iPod.

Jul 07, 06 - 12:12 pm Comment from: whatever

Metallica is to blame - they found out that he got his music from the old napster illegally and came after him. If they would just allow legal downloads this wouldn't of happened.
I HATE THEM!!!! Give me the music on iTunes you lazy tools..

Jul 07, 06 - 12:31 pm Comment from: tt

this fsck was MOWING THE LAWN IN A RAIN STORM and he thinks its his IPOD that caused the trouble??

Jul 07, 06 - 12:33 pm Comment from: ndelc

What about the million dollar question: does it still work? If so, I bet he doesn't have to charge the battery for awhile.

Just wait, some lawyer that MS has on retainer will get a whiff of this and slap the kid's name on a class action suit without his knowledge. It's a done deal.

Jul 07, 06 - 12:53 pm Comment from: Ampar

Well, duh. Metallica isn't grounded like say, AC/DC would be. Simple physics.

Jul 07, 06 - 12:55 pm Comment from: Ampar

Quick! Someone should find out if he's a Republican. This thread isn't inane enough nor long enough yet.

Jul 07, 06 - 01:10 pm Comment from: Mark

This goober's mon smells an oppertunity to score some bucks.

Mark

Jul 07, 06 - 01:15 pm Comment from: see...

ndelc is correct. The real question is, does the ipod still work?

Jul 07, 06 - 01:16 pm Comment from: AG Pennypacker

i'm sure the only thing the goobers "mom" smells is burned flesh and singed hair.

Jul 07, 06 - 01:17 pm Comment from: Ampar

"This goober. . . "

If he's Arachis hypogaea, then his thin shell is probably to blame for the roasting.

Jul 07, 06 - 01:17 pm Comment from: leodavinci

Beans,

"...BTW, I am sure the lawnmower didn't attract anything either."

Yeah. That's why lighting rods are made of plastic.

Jul 07, 06 - 01:19 pm Comment from: MacRaven

If Apple gets sued over this and has to pay anything, then Wilson, Callaway, TaylorMade and the rest of the golf club makers need to cough up some dough as well.

Jul 07, 06 - 01:23 pm Comment from: Ampar

"Yeah, and New Orleans got hit by Katrina because

the storm was attracted to crawfish, gumbo, and

cross-dressers."

You mean it didn't? Fox News said that was why and they had footage.

tongue wink

Jul 07, 06 - 01:55 pm Comment from: John

First of all what was he doing outside during an electrical storm? They teach you not to be outside during an electrical storm in elementary school. The iPod has nothing to do with it. I would call this his dumb luck and stupidity for being outside during an electrical storm and certainly wouldn't blame the iPod for anything. But anything to bring up a lawsuit and try and make some quick cash, that's what this is all about I'm sure.

Jul 07, 06 - 01:56 pm Comment from: John

Oi, such idiots out there! Okay, _if_ the boy had his iPod stuck into the ground, and headphones on his ears, he _might_ have a case. If the iPod's on his waist, then _he_--and of course that nice big metal thing called a lawn mower!--is the ground that connected the lightning's potiential energy to the earth.

People really need to study electromagnetism before spouting off such stupid claims. Sheesh!

Jul 07, 06 - 02:26 pm Comment from: Frank

Even nature has good taste in selecting it's mp3 player.

Jul 07, 06 - 02:28 pm Comment from: Thorin

Ampar you are cracking me up today.

Damn, is it time to go home yet?

(he stares with disgust into the

workplace Win XP desktop)

Jul 07, 06 - 02:44 pm Comment from: Josh VH

Uhhh, this kid is a retard. I was driving through Castle Rock on Sunday coming back from a white water rafting trip and it looked like the apocalypse was here! Huge bolts of lightning everywhere and it poured rain for nearly an hour. Not sure wtf he was doing mowing his lawn, but he deseerved to be struck by lightning and if he goes through with this stupid suit I may just have to go beat him myself!

Jul 07, 06 - 02:48 pm Comment from: Joe McConnell

"Why people here would make fun of another´s person´s misfortune and gloat over his injury I have no idea."

Easy....cuz it bends the reality distortion field slightly. Any threat, even the silliest, is serious around here.

Jul 07, 06 - 04:42 pm Comment from: Ryan

"There's always that last inch (or two, or three) of rubber in between..."

Car (and motorcycle) tires are NOT insulators. See http://www.cmpco.com/safety/tips.html.

The reason a car protects you from lightning is because it is a faraday cage.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faraday_cage#Real-world_Faraday_cages

A motorcycle offers no such protection.

Do some research before you spout off with "conventional wisdom"
