Dashboard, QuickTime 7, Automator are Mac users’ most anticipated Tiger features
Friday, April 08, 2005 - 02:40 PM EST

"Mac fans are getting keyed up for the immanent [sic] launch of Tiger, which, according to Apple, will launch in the first half of this year. Macworld readers were asked: 'What Tiger feature are you looking forward to the most?' in an online poll. With 1,532 votes cast it emerged that more than a quarter (29 per cent) were most excited about Dashboard," Macworld UK reports. "Almost another quarter (24 per cent) is looking forward to searching with Spotlight. 'Crystal clear video in QuickTime 7' was the most popular choice of 15 per cent of readers. While the next popular new feature, Automator, was the choice of 7 per cent. Less popular choices were iChat AV (5 per cent), 'Up-to-the-minute RSS feeds in Safari' (3 per cent), .Mac Sync (2 per cent) and 'VoiceOver's spoken English interface' (1 per cent)."

don't forget Safari RSS. That's gonna be saweet.

Apr 08, 05 - 02:58 pm Comment from: Peter

Actually, one of the things I'm looking forward to is improved support for "Zones" (to use the AppleTalk term) in Rendezvous. This will make it easier to find my home machine from work.

It's the one reason I might buy a dot-Mac subscription next year, as I'm sure my cable operator won't support it...

Apr 08, 05 - 03:02 pm Comment from: Andy C.

DashBoard followed by iChat AV, SpotLight, QuickTime 7, Safari RSS. Oh yeah, and Core Image, that looks sweeeeeet! Looking forward to new apps that take advantage of that technology.

Apr 08, 05 - 03:07 pm Comment from: Mac112

Spotligth! No doubt! It's awesome!

Apr 08, 05 - 03:17 pm Comment from: mcloki

IChat AV. This has to be the single most compelling feature of Tiger. If it works anything like the demo online. It will rock. Why you may ask. Everyone can understand it, and what it can do for them, just by seeing it. Every teenager will want it, to talk to all of their friends. or to see their boyfriend/girlfriend. Every grandma with a grandchild in another City will want it. I can see people buying Macs just for this feature and not using for anything but iChat.

I'm looking forward to the box it comes in. They always have very pretty boxes.

Apr 08, 05 - 03:30 pm Comment from: b

i heard tiger woods will come to my house and install the new OS on my mac. i can't wait for that.

Apr 08, 05 - 03:31 pm Comment from: Sergio

I am looking forward to a program that uses Core Image to replicate photoshop for free, at higher quality.

Apr 08, 05 - 03:43 pm Comment from: English Teacher

Use your friggin spell checker. You will find that the word 'immanent' is hard to locate in the dictionary!

Apr 08, 05 - 03:45 pm Comment from: shempzilla

MDN-

Just wanted to point out that your headline is a little misleading. When I saw it I thought, "Huh, I can't believe Spotlight was on that list." Then I read the article and realized it actually finished way ahead of the second and third items you mentioned. There are bigger issues to worry about in the world, to be certain, but I still think your headline needs an update!

Apr 08, 05 - 03:49 pm Comment from: A Better English Teacher

And "friggin" is?

Apr 08, 05 - 03:53 pm Comment from: Jimbo von Winskinheimer

English Teacher is correct. They used 'immanent' when they meant 'imminent'. Two similar words, but the latter is correct.

Apr 08, 05 - 03:57 pm Comment from: Loser

I've been buying Macs since 1984 (and Apple since 1981) and I still haven't gotten laid because of a computer. Hopefully Tiger will change that!

I hear Tiger Woods and Bill Gates will come to your house in a limousine and give you a hummer while you install 10.4.

Don't ask ME what friggin means, I might tell you.

Apr 08, 05 - 04:12 pm Comment from: Artisticualted

I played with the Tiger beta a few months ago. Automater was something I was interested in as well. I hope Apple has written more pre-built actions into it since I last used it, or it will take a bit of "code writing" to get some, for lack of a better term, customer specific actions. The potential is there, and maybe a user group type web resource will surface with lots of custom built "actions" available for download. I expect that to be the case.

Apr 08, 05 - 04:24 pm Comment from: Viridian

"You will find that the word 'immanent' is hard to locate in the dictionary!"

Actually, it's not. I'm seriously hoping that the writer did not mean to say "immanent launch", especially the second definition of the word:

"Restricted entirely to the mind; subjective"

The Top 10 List (from the Home Office, with apologies to David Letterman)
10- Updated .mac that works like it should.
9-- iChat AV with H264. The best gets better.
8-- Improved Sync. They have rolled a couple of apps up into one.
7-- QT7- We finally won't have to pay for Pro to get full screen.
6-- iTunes- New QT brings a new build of iTunes with new stuff.
5-- Core Image Can you say more responsive? Sure you can.
4-- Automator Scripting for the rest of us
3-- Spotlight The Finder really finds stuff--fast
2-- Updated Open GL & Video Drivers.
1-- Safari RSS Apple gets back in the game and leaves FireFox behind.

And there's always this: It isn't Windoze.

Ed,
I know, the box is always something else.

I bought iLife 05 just for that green bubble thing on the box, sweeeeeet.

Apr 08, 05 - 04:49 pm Comment from: didn't you hear?

...Paul Thurrott said no on is really going to care about Tiger, cuz, you know, Windows is so great and everything. The antispyware programs are really easy to use. You can sit back and watch them for hours!

Apr 08, 05 - 05:07 pm Comment from: notatotalsucker

NoPCZone, ummm, Letterman didn't invent the concept known as "Top 10". No apology necessary.

(that said, the music industry might be after you for stealing "their" idea.)

Apr 08, 05 - 05:08 pm Comment from: notatotalsucker

Oh, my fave features, sure, iChat, Dashboard and so on, but hey, what about this Core Data thingy? That'll prove most useful in time to come.

Apr 08, 05 - 05:28 pm Comment from: Jack A

I am looking forward to 4 way vid chats most, Spotlight second, Automator 3rd. I have Konfabulator and I anticipate Dashboard just being similar but with better integration. Konfabulator is great. I wish Apple could have somehow worked something out with them. It was so cool that they developed it for the Mac first.

What is this .Mac Sync of which they speak? Is something different from how it is now?

Apr 08, 05 - 05:49 pm Comment from: B-Sabre

I'm waiting for iStab, whereby everytime Thurott writes some assinine article about the Mac, I can click on a link and remotely poke him in the eye with a sharp stick over the Internet.

Apr 08, 05 - 05:50 pm Comment from: Neil

I'm thinking Dashboard because it would be useful to always have things like calculator, airport info, stock prices, traffic info, map utility etc in a easy to locate but unobtrusive place whenever you need it.

I'm sure the other features are going to save more time / provide greater power etc, but dashboard is going to be neat.

I liked Konfabulator too, but it always seems to bogged down my machine in the end.

Apr 08, 05 - 05:50 pm Comment from: egarc

I'm looking forward to Private Browsing and Stealth Mode...

Apr 08, 05 - 06:19 pm Comment from: moiety5

Uh, regarding the "top ten" I thought fullscreen QT was stilled a restricted pro feature in QT 7. Am I wrong? I certainly hope so, but. . .

Maybe then I'll be able to play Doom 3... cheese

Sergio,

You're going to be waiting a long time. Core image will replace Photoshop when a headlight replaces a Porsche.

Apr 08, 05 - 07:22 pm Comment from: chrish

This article reinforces that Apple should have put a grammar checker in Tiger. And probably a thesaurus too.

Besides that, I'm looking forward to Spotlight and Parental Control

Apr 08, 05 - 07:58 pm Comment from: Marcus Aurelius

Sergio didn't say that Core Image would replace Photoshop, maybe you should read him again. Core Image will allow developers to create something that does the same things as parts of Photoshop but better. It is a guarantee that people will do this within the year.

Being able to take advantage of non-destructive image processing at the highest and lowest levels of the OS will make this more than possible. Being open source in nature will only be much better for us, in terms of price and quality. Absolute control at the pixel level, and the ability to freely download plugins for a "Photoshop-like" program or 3, will be amazing.

There is nothing like this anywhere. There will be no competition for it. Photo magazines will do constant reviews of "The Web's Best Core Image Plugins". All photographers will know about it, all image editors too. Image units will be plentiful, Apple will keep updating the shading language.

The future is here with Tiger and Core Image, if Adobe won't get on it, they'll be left behind. For people just getting into image editing, that won't be a problem. Photoshop isn't exactly the easiest program to learn. Legacy has kept it the way it is.

So let's get with Core Image. It'll be fun, I promise.

So. . . nobody knows on that full screen QT 7 non-pro question??

Apr 09, 05 - 02:56 am Comment from: down

# 1 is speed! Will it be at least as fast as OS 8/9 for everyday use, file navigation etc?

Apr 09, 05 - 04:50 am Comment from: Twenty Benson

EXACTLY Down.

Getting back to basics, The most important - and necessary developments in Tiger - if it to be taken seriously as a worthy competitor to Windows is:

1. Finder window list updating which - if not instant like OS 7.8.9 - at least happens quickly enough for me not be constantly opening the wrong files.

2. The ability for Pro users to place a Dock-like launcher in the right side of the MenuBar - freeing up their desktops (permanently) from this highly irritating and intrusive piece of junk.

3. All windows to have a 2 pixel invisible border around their perimeters which acts as a 'margin of error' (like OS 9's double window frame) - clicking in this border area means you INTENDED to stay within the active window space so no more accidentally missing the corner drag-handle or scroll-bars.

4. Ability for Pro users to chose a different system font for Tiger. It's truly amazing how much this speeds up using the Mac. I've switched to Helvetica Condensed - all my drop-down menus are now tightly grouped, kerned and leaded (like OS 9). Lucinda Grande (whilst it looks 'nice') is far too open and wide for serious users.

5. A return to GUI elements which bear some resemblance to their function! Scroller tabs for example.

All in all I don't know much about Core Image - but it sounds exciting. As for the other - much touted - additions to Tiger - I'm more sceptical. Dashboard has already been done with Konfabulator - yet more Steve Jobs RDF eye candy? (how many times do we REALLY want to see the temperature in Timbuktu floating around our desktops in a shiny red plastic box dripping with shading and highlights?). I don't get Spotlight... my existing Search seems to work fine.

Number 1 desired feature in Tiger: an installer that doesn't wipe out all the data on my external Firewire drives!

Whats with the SIC thingy?

Apr 10, 05 - 01:05 am Comment from: iMaki

I'm looking forward to Tiger but don't think it's anything to get worked up about. I'd be more psyched if Apple announced a new multi-function/button mouse and an Apple-brand all-in-one printer or a new mail client that has something as basic as emoticons. I'm all for Apple making money on the OSX iterations, but I don't see anything revolutionary since the original OSX. I still think it's slow and Windows has the way upper hand on ease and launching/locating pplications. You know the blue APPLE on the upper left of the screen. If I could lauch apps from there like the RECENT ITEMS thingee, I'd be happy. The dock and the finder just don't get it done. In fact, the finder is a DUD. I'll buy Tiger, but I'm not going to get too excited about it.

Apr 10, 05 - 10:37 am Comment from: Ashdog

Actually you can get a little program that adds that functionality to your apple menu. Its very quick and stable.

Enough dumb pining- you obviously haven't checked out tiger 'cause its amazing. Revolutionary is exactly what it is.
