ComputerWorld: Apple’s 17-inch PowerBook ‘the creme de la creme’ laptop
Thursday, June 17, 2004 - 02:04 PM EST

"Laptops are designed for portability, and not everyone would be happy lugging around a 17-in. laptop of any make. But at 6.9 lb., this one stacks up well in comparison with some of its PC competitors. Hewlett-Packard Co., for instance, this week released its new Compaq Business Notebook nx9500, which also sports a 17-in. screen and weighs almost 9.5 lb. Now that's a portable desktop," Ken Mingis reports for ComputerWorld.

"The latest crop of PowerBooks shows that Apple has done a superb job of narrowing the gap in features between the 12-in. entry-level PowerBook, which goes for $1,599, and the 17-in. model, which costs $500 less than the first version did a year ago," Mingis reports. "When trying to decide which PowerBook to get, would-be buyers for years have posited the same question on numerous message boards: Should they snag a 12-in., the midrange 15-in. version or the big guy?"

Mingis reports, "In the past, opting for portability meant a major trade-off in speed or features. That's no longer the case. The processing speed of the 1.33-GHz G4 chip in the 12-in. model is close to the speed of the 1.5-GHz chip in the 17-in. model. They're all available with SuperDrives, AirPort Extreme, Universal Serial Bus 2.0, FireWire 800 and other shared goodies. No, you can't get the lighted keyboard in the entry-level model, nor does it offer a PC Card slot. Otherwise, it's very close in features. In fact, you can even add that 5,400-rpm hard drive, though it'll cost you $125 if you're getting the 12-in. model."

"The same is true for the 15-in. models, which come with either the 1.33-GHz processor or the same 1.5-GHz chip found in the 17-in. model. You can get the faster hard drive in either if them and, in the top-end 15-in. model, the extra video RAM," Mingis reports. "In other words, when trying to decide which PowerBook to buy these days, the decision really comes down to how small (or big) you want to go... For me, that decision points to the 17-in. PowerBook, the creme de la creme of the lineup."

First post!! I am now waiting for all of you other posters to shower me with your praise and compliments to how manly and bad-ass I am!! Women dig first posters!! I can post all night, baby! YEAH!!!! Repeat after me... BAD ASS!!! I am the Shaquille O'Neal of first posters, and the rest of you-- all you can do is look up and dream! YEAH!!

Jun 17, 04 - 02:27 pm Comment from: Dubious Behavior

I was enjoying the article until I got down to the picture where he has one open Powerbook sitting on top of another open Powerbook with the screens nearly touching. I cringed. If you're going to treat them like that, get a Dell.

Jun 17, 04 - 02:27 pm Comment from: JJ

I don't understand why you have to do that, but that's okay. Your life must not consist of too much, so as far as I am concerned, you are a bad ass. you first posted. you were typing while everyone else wasn't. you, stewey, are on fire. take the first post - take it and run! Have fun - enjoy it. It's got to be a thrill. Holler from the highest mountain - that is, of course, if you go outdoors. Be merry...

One is the loneliest number...

Jun 17, 04 - 02:34 pm Comment from: JayBone

Who's the idiot that always insists on being an early adopter and grabbed the 1st Gen 17" PB...the one with the 1 Ghz, 60 GB, USB 1.1, etc...ONLY to see all the specs improve dramatically - in no time flat - along with a (gag!) $500 price drop? Ugh!!! That idiot would be me. May, 2003 - $3,299. What the (f-word), AAPL? That really hurts.

Jun 17, 04 - 02:42 pm Comment from: Heimlick

Who's more annoying? Stewey or Sputnik? Stewey, though a moron, is not saying anything pro-Windows, so I think Sputnik wins by a nose. From my guess, I think Stewey received the standard frontal lobe lobotomy, while Sputnik had the whole mess taken out a la Jack O'Lantern.

Jun 17, 04 - 02:42 pm Comment from: Larry Hagman

My 15" is almost too big. I can't see the appeal of lugging aroung 6lbs of PowerBook.

Jun 17, 04 - 02:46 pm Comment from: itnAAnti

What do you expect? You bought a Gen-1 and got a really nice machine at the time it was released; Apple has never been a company to rest on its laurels, and they improved their computer. I don't think I would call it "no time at all" - it's been almost 18 months now since the 17" was announced - get over it.

No one can be this sexy and cool all at the same time. Mmmmm-doggie!!! All you womens out there... give Stewey a call. I hook you up. Like Barry White.

Jun 17, 04 - 03:01 pm Comment from: Brian the Dog

You are such a little closet case, Stewey. Now take Lois' heels off. And take that makeup off. You look ridiculous.

17" is crazy big. im happy with my 12" ibook.

and i don't WANT any creme in my laptop. except maybe from stewey :p

Jun 17, 04 - 04:01 pm Comment from: iSteve

I love my 17" PB. It mainly sits on my desk but sometimes I like to work from the living room, at a free wi-fi hotspot, or from another city. The extra screen real estate is well worth having to carry around a bit more computer. I highly recommend the Brenthaven bag.

Jun 17, 04 - 04:06 pm Comment from: theloniusMac

I have a 17". It's big. It's bad. It's badder than Stewey. It's 1st Gen, so I had it first. I had it before everyone else who waited for the next gen. And you know what else, I've got a dual 2.0 G5 as well. It's bad, it's fast, it's hot, it's cooler than anything out there. It has 6.5GB of RAM and a badass cinema display attached. IT'S A FREAKIN SICK HALO MACHINE. Do I care that there's a 2.5 now? NO! I'll get the 3rd generation and it will be better than the 2.5. It will be 3.0 and I will name it STEVE's TRUTH!

Jun 17, 04 - 04:17 pm Comment from: Jimbo von Winskinheimer

It's not Stewey's fault that he suffers from Premature Postulation. Yes, Stewey posts before he's supposed to, sometimes hitting the "Submit" button well before he wants to. He's been trying to last longer, but he can't. His psychiatrist has been helping him to feel better about himself, believing that ladies like a guy that posts quickly and all. Pity him.

Jun 17, 04 - 05:00 pm Comment from: Jimbo von Winskinheimer

Oh yeah Stewey, in case no one told you - Shaq LOST the other night. Yes, Shaq is a LOSER JUST LIKE YOU!!!

And I was so proud of my 9" Fat Mac.

Jun 17, 04 - 06:09 pm Comment from: robnash

i got the 1st gen 17" and it's the best apple i have owned (and i've had a few) even after 1 year it's as solid today as the day i bought it and i lug it around with me every day. i had a 15" ti before and it was crap within months : ( paint chippings, dull screen, and now when i hold it it feels feeble compared with the 17"

the 17" is well work the screen estate, this machine will definetly hold out till the G5 PB : )

Jun 17, 04 - 06:30 pm Comment from: Billy Boy

What no Apple Stock Update today?

Jun 17, 04 - 06:43 pm Comment from: Occasional Poster

I have the original 17 inch also. I had just ordered a 15 inch TI from a store here in Japan that was out of stock at the time. Two days later, the AL 17 was announced. I asked the store to changed my order and they did. I haven't regretted it one minute. I had to wait three months but it was worth it.

For those who want a smaller one for travel, that is fine. But to complain about wieght - my 5 ft tall 100 lb daughter carried it in her back pack several times across Osaka and Kobe to watch DVDs and show off. Never complained about the weight. She said it was less weight than her books at college.
- People who complain abut the weight are wimps!

Jun 17, 04 - 06:47 pm Comment from: Sputnik

All IT professionals uses PCs...PCs are better....Dells are heavier...IT professionals use Dells....heavier is better....I have a small penis...I am an IT professional....all IT professionals have a small penis....small penises are better......

Jun 17, 04 - 07:10 pm Comment from: Jay Random

As usual, Sputnik the Dancing PC Troll has it all wrong.

Sputnik, you may be an IT professional, but you have no penis at all. (Hey, you! Troll in the dungeon! Just thought you should know. . . .)

Seriously: This is why we're not expecting a G5 PowerBook any time soon. It would no doubt be possible to fit a liquid-cooling system into a slightly thicker version of Big Al, but the resulting weight would make that 9.5-lb Dell feel like a feather. I don't mind if Apple hold off till they can get it right.

Jun 17, 04 - 07:32 pm Comment from: Ace

I bought the 17" Powerbook with 1.33Ghz. It is by far the most versatile computer I have ever used. I use it for my web design company and every client that sees it is in absolute awe of it's beauty, size and incredible strucutre. From the fullsized keyboard with illuminated keys, to the 17" screen of superb quality and along side with OS X I am on top of the world. I have 1GB of ram and an 80GB hard drive. I couldn't ask for anymore in this wonderful machine. I don't think I will ever need to replace this no matter who technology and OSes progress. This is by far the most incredible investment I have ever made and would recommend it to anyone. No glitches, complaints or shortcomings with this model. The G4 may not need to be brought to the G5 model. I don't see much of a reason. If you are looking for more raw power, you need the G5 desktop anyways. As far as laptops are concerned, this is the best in the market and will be years before it is ever outdone or a standard model could replace it's high powered status which comes with it.

Jun 17, 04 - 07:39 pm Comment from: Ace

By the way, my other high quality Mac that I own is a Mac Classic. Between the 2 I am unstoppable ( and no I didn't use it up until my purchase of my laptop). I had a G4 733Ghz QuickSilver. I've been using computers since I was 4 years old and only owned 4 computers my entire life. I didn't even need the QuickSilver. How many computers can you say you've owned? (22 years old, BTW).

Jun 17, 04 - 11:26 pm Comment from: amyhre

Sputnik is a moron, methinks. Anyhoo, back on topic. Typing this from a 17" 1GHz full RAM, yadda yadda, through DSL and Airport Extreme. Must say bigger really is better. It's a man thing I guess. What a pity it isn't my PB. *Waaaaa*

Jun 18, 04 - 01:15 am Comment from: BuriedCaesar

I'm of the opinion that Sputnik is out there goading the more gullable readers into a sparring match, one in which he throws the first punch and then everyone else attempts to pummel him but, alas, he's long gone on to the next topic - you'll notice he rarely (if ever) directly responds to the refutations of his statements that are put out there. And I'm further convinced by the wise observation that the special characters he's able to place in his posts (smiley face) are more likely due to the work of a troll-hater-baiter than an actual troll.

And I love my new 17" iMac at work! It's a thing of beauty, even if isn't all that portable (though certainly moreso than what it replaced - a beige compaq DT).

Jun 18, 04 - 09:46 am Comment from: G-Spank

yeah, really, back on topic! Stewey is the baddest of all the first posters, people! Just look at the way he talks about it! Damn, the boy is bad ass, and those who can't see that need to open their eyes!
