Cingular Wireless considering selling Motorola Apple iTunes mobile phone
Friday, June 24, 2005 - 06:39 PM EDT

"Cingular Wireless, the No. 1 U.S. mobile service, is considering selling a Motorola Inc. cell phone that can play music using Apple Computer Inc.'s iTunes music service, sources familiar with the matter said on Friday. 'Motorola and Apple have been talking to Cingular about it using the iTunes phone,' according to one of the sources, who asked not to be named. RBC Capital analyst Mark Sue said in a recent research note that Apple and Cingular were working out final details on revenue sharing," Sinead Carew reports for Reuters. "...Motorola spokeswoman Jennifer Weyrauch said the company is on schedule to ship an iTunes phone in the third quarter but would not disclose which operators would sell the phone."

Too late for me. As I am going to be doing a lot of business travelling in the US this summer, my wife and I are going to upgrade our service from the Home Plan to the National Plan. It will be at least 2 more years before I even consider getting a new phone.

Ah. First crack in the cell phone carriers' resistance to music they don't control. If Cingular hops on, how can the others hold back? Steve Jobs wants to wait to announce the whole enchilada -- unlike the cell phone makers who pre-announce their draft ideas.

The holding back part was total bullshit.. too much was made of the delay... The press made it sound like no one wanted anything to do with the iTunes phone..

That whole RockR iTunes phone needs to globally hurry up. Honestly, we heard about this a long time ago, it has already been said that the phone is ready to be used so why in the world would CIngular not pick it up? It's a garunteed thing that these phones will be popular for the simple reason that they will be a parity to the iPod's cool factor and Apple's innovative know how of software. What is it now that the phone would be held back again? Is it Apple?

Maybe the issue is Apple setting up some awesome app support/tie in with other products (the new iPod with say...bluetooth built in) and finishing the touches on iTunes 4.9 which of course would help give us a hint as to where iTunes 5.0 would be going since currently we on the Mac side use iSync to get our info up to date (not me, thanks to a proprietary software for windows only that I have to use to get this Sony Ericsson phone working with a computer).

I'm not sure at all, this is entirely speculation but what I do know is, I use Cingular, I hate my Sony Ericsson, and I know Apple makes great software and UI. Therefore, I want my RockR iTunes phone.

Actually, the holding back part wasn't total bs. AT&T;still operates their own music store, even though Cingular bought them almost a year ago, and Verizon is still on track to open their own music download store, although reportedly, you will only be allowed to download to your phone, not a computer. Of course, Verizon was also the company that claimed people would pay $2.50 for a song since they pay that much for ringtones. GSM carriers are the first to adopt new tech, and Cingular is the largest GSM carrier, so Cingular + Apple makes sense.

I've been waiting for this phone *forever*. I've got an old Nokia 6360 - its not even colour! LOL

I just want a sexy phone with bluetooth. The RAZR is hot, but the user interface sucks. I'm hoping that - praying that - if iTunes is on the phone, then Apple's had some influence over the whole package.

Either way, I'm overdue for a new phone. Hurry the hell up!!! lol
