RUMOR: Apple to unveil ‘Mac Pro’ with new enclosure design, Intel Core 2 Duo at WWDC next month
Monday, July 03, 2006 - 05:00 PM EST

"When Apple unveils its Power Mac G5 replacement at its Worldwide Developer's Conference (WWDC) next month, the top-of-the-line computer will sport a new enclosure," Ryan Katz reports for Think Secret.

"While specifics were not disclosed, the new computer's case is said to be substantially different enough to make the distinction between the new Intel Core 2 Duo-powered system and its PowerPC predecessor easy to spot," Katz reports.

"Configurations of the new Mac are said to be similar to the most recent Power Mac G5, including a single dual-core processor in the low- and mid-range systems, and a dual dual-core (quad core) system at the top," Katz reports. "Meanwhile, sources say that a new enclosure is waiting for the MacBook Pro and will be released when that system adopts Intel's mobile Core 2 Duo processor."

The new MacPro will be powered by the Maximum Improbability Drive (MID). When it's booted up it will transform the surrounding 2,000 sq feet into an all night diner which will serve as its central processing unit.

Not only will it be able to render high definition 3d images, it will actually be able to transform the space time continuum and create virtual reality 4-dimensional environments in real time without the need for monitors by melding with the users' brains.

All this for an affordable $1,999

Looprumors said in February that "the Mac Pro will house quad Intel processors on even the base model".

Sounds more logical than Think Secret's predictions.

I agree, Apple won't lose millions dropping down to 32 bit on their top of the line scientific computer.

According to the comments on Engadget (and who knows how reliable they are...), the Conroe does not support 2-way systems (read: can't put in more than one processor). While the Conroe's are dual core, you can't have a "dual-dual" system. Thats why many believe that Apple will use Woodcrest Xeons, which allow up to 8-way configurations.

Now, I'm not positive, because it seems Intel changes sockets or chipsets every 10 minutes, but the quad-core Woodcrest Xeons may be drop-in compatible with the dual core motherboards. How sweet would that be?
