Okay, can anyone translate "improves website compatibility, application stability and support for 3rd party web applications" into plain English and let us know what the fixes really are?

Aug 29, 05 - 05:31 pm Comment from: bobb

Aug 29, 05 - 05:59 pm Comment from: Bizarro Jeff

Too late, Apple. I got tired of Safari locking up on me and the spinning beach ball of death. Firefox has my browser business, now.

Aug 29, 05 - 06:03 pm Comment from: ron

Never locked up on me.

Aug 29, 05 - 06:05 pm Comment from: JEG

Does anyone know if there is a good Safari plugin for filling out on-line forms and managing ids/passwords.

The Autofill in Safari sucks

Aug 29, 05 - 06:19 pm Comment from: Cutman

Why didn't Apple just release a finished OS. How many updates already?

Aug 29, 05 - 06:20 pm Comment from: scottm4321

Anyone know what SAFT is? First run on Safari 1.3.1 says it's not supported and wouldn't let me start up until I told it not to load saft. I'm runnning 10.3.9

Aug 29, 05 - 06:29 pm Comment from: hammer

"Why didn't Apple just release a finished OS. How many updates already?"

Perhaps since you can anticipate every single problem an OS will have, because the software market is so static, you should consider getting a job as Apple's vice president of software engineering.

and to answer your stupid question, typically there are 8 or 9

Aug 29, 05 - 06:31 pm Comment from: Mac & PC Guy

Firefox for me on both Windows and Macs.

Aug 29, 05 - 06:47 pm Comment from: bobb

Firefox sucks

Aug 29, 05 - 06:51 pm Comment from: justified

I can't imagine there is any such thing as "a finished OS."

Aug 29, 05 - 06:54 pm Comment from: R

Cutman--

Maybe we should wait a few years and only get updates when some malicious SOB has already infiltrated our computers?

Good idea.

Aug 29, 05 - 06:54 pm Comment from: DistantThunder

scottm4321: Find all about SAFT here: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/20346

(No, I don't use it.)

For the first time after restart, Spotlight didn't have to sync.

"Why didn't Apple just release a finished OS. How many updates already?"

suck sh*t pr*ck-face. os 10.4 is amazing. i've never had a problem with it and for that matter 10.3. you really must be a retarded bastard to not know how to use 10.4 without it blowing up in your face...a complete idiot

Aug 29, 05 - 08:23 pm Comment from: Rick

Cutman:

That is a really stupid question. Have you ever heard about "evolution"? In that case, Why does Henry Ford made the "T" model instead of made a Mustang in the first place? Why Sir Isaac Newton didn't came with the Relativity theory instead of the laws he develop or Linear Algebra instead of the calculus?
Developeing something (and Science and other branchs of knowledge) are developed as if you were climbing a ladder, but making a rung at a time then step on that rung so you are a litte bit higher and so on. You step on the rung of your knowledge to develop more knowledge, a step at a time.
If you wait until a version of the OS is perfect and bullet-proof (or idiot-proof, for that matter) you will never get a final product.

Aug 29, 05 - 09:07 pm Comment from: Eric3

"Improves website compatibility, application stability and support for 3rd party web applications" for me means it no longer crashes when I have multiple pages loading in tabs in one window.

Aug 29, 05 - 09:41 pm Comment from: zahadum

1. i share the major gripe: safari locks up all the time (especially with quicktime)

2. i do not share the low expectations (and remarkably uninformed comments) by rick & hammer ...

* mac users expect their tools to be built properly - hencethe credo "it just works". the plug-and-play franchise is a crucial compoenent of the apple brand. to mess with that is to court disaster (ie ms junkland).

* software can - AND SHOULD - be designed (or at least tested) to be error free ... model-checking, verification tools, theorem-provers, proof-carrying code, etc all are used in mission-critical apps all the time (for both hardware & software).

it is possible to mathematically prove the correctness (or any other policy) of a design and/or an implemenation.

of course it sad but true that apple has not been a leader in this area (just as it has missed the boat on aspect-oriented programming, generative programming, and a host of other modern techniques that IBM & Microsoft inter alia are aggressively developing) ... the fact that apple doesnt even ship a UML tool as part of XCODE speaks volumes about what is not going right in cupertino ....

in any case, validation (eg SPIN before or even SDL afterwards) is entirely possible -- so people who dont know what they are talking about should not embarrass themselves by proving it!

so that excludes rick & hammer - and sad to say, it would seem, to also apply to the safari team (not to mention so many others at apple which have contributed to such a buggy platform nearly 10 years after it was acquired from next!)

i updated, restarted and lost the connection to my wireless network on my pb. i'm fscking pissed!!!!. beware!@!!

Cutman's lonely. He misses the new, long awaited arrival of gasware from MS.....Phista

He sees all the cool things in Tiger and hes just getting jealous.

Aug 29, 05 - 10:44 pm Comment from: Jimbo von Winskinheimer

Hey Zadahum, you're not the only software engineer on this board. However, you seem to be the only one that is full of shit. Keep talking out your ass with your theories of developing perfect code. I bet the 10-line shit that you write is nearly error free. When you are developing the best OS on the planet, it's a bit more difficult.

Oh, as Steve says, "one more thing". You show your ignorance by touting Microsloth as your idea of an innovative software company. Their shit breaks more often than anything I've ever seen.

As you said, "people who don't know what they are talking about should not embarass themselves by proving it." In that case, you should lay off the sauce and keep off this board.

Aug 29, 05 - 10:53 pm Comment from: pissed of no more

bounced my router, fixed everything. whoo hoo

Aug 29, 05 - 11:26 pm Comment from: Bob

Out of curiousity, what systems are you guys running that are having issues with safari? How much ram, etc?

Just curious. I'm running 10.4 on a dual 500 G4, without a single problem so far, other than I'm starting to realize my computer is slow. I do get a beach ball for about 1-2 seconds when I mouse over the bookmark menu for the first time.

Aug 29, 05 - 11:43 pm Comment from: bikersrule

Actually the issue of updates to operating systems is a valid and shouldn't be dismissed as being stupid or otherwise. It seems that there are two rules in business. One for the makers of operating systems and one for every other business. Could you imagine the outcry if you had to keep updating the technology behind your toaster, dvd player or heaven forbid your motor vehicle.

Of course one must make allowances for security issues and the new technology coming into play, but to release updates to just make a system work or, you release an operating system with known problems is just not good enough.

Now I'll just get an update for the software that is embedded in the chip that monitors the timing on my motorcycle. See my point.

Aug 29, 05 - 11:53 pm Comment from: nsapap

Bob,

Good point. I'm using Safari on a dual-800 G4 QuickSilver PM running 10.3.9 (1.5 GB RAM) and on two 15" 667MHz TiBooks (512MB & 1GB RAM) and a 1.5GHz 17"PB (1.5GB RAM), all running 10.4.2. I have had NO problems with Safari locking up or quitting unexpectedly. (I guess I should be thankful, huh?). My dual-800 is starting to seem slow, I can relate (or I'm getting more impatient with my video renderings!). Sometime soon I may have to spring for a new PowerMac.

Aug 30, 05 - 01:05 am Comment from: Beavix

"Scroll bars now seem to work correctly in framed pages with Safari 2.0.1."
Beavix's take: Ummm...no, they don't. I applied the patch, went to gettyimages.com, hit search and voila! Broken scrollbars again!

Aug 30, 05 - 07:36 am Comment from: Macaday

Safari is the business - snappy and never once froze on me.

Firefox is a good backup...that's never needed.

Aug 30, 05 - 08:38 am Comment from: hammer

zahadum, nice. Low expectations? I think not. Realistic.

Now, im gonna get back to work, actually producing something with my apparently imperfect OS.

MW 'also' as in, oh yeah, also your an ass for trying to prove how much smarter you are than everyone else.

Aug 30, 05 - 09:44 am Comment from: Hg Wells

I was just having "unexpectedly quit" problems working with an Apple site the other day using Safari. Maybe this will help. Right now I'm on OmniWeb. I like the features. Maybe I should try it again, but I find FireFox uninteresting. I also prefer to support OmniGroup which has been devoted to Macs.

But, I do still use Safari a lot.

Aug 30, 05 - 11:49 am Comment from: izod

ahhh....

Safari is working like a dream again - cool...

Been waiting for this fix since Tiger was released (this Safari issue has been the only thorn in my side since upgrading). No more beachball - back to fast loading times! 10.4.2 on a dual 450 G4.

Aug 30, 05 - 12:47 pm Comment from: LordRobin

"Could you imagine the outcry if you had to keep updating the technology behind your toaster, dvd player or heaven forbid your motor vehicle."

No, in those technologies we just live with the device almost working pretty much of the time. I can think of plenty of devices I've bought that I'd love to have "fixed" in the same simple way an OS update does.

Aug 30, 05 - 01:48 pm Comment from: active x support

i wish apple would add some kind of plug-in for active x. my works websites are ie version 6 only and i can't access them from home. i've already complained about this but they're not going to change that anytime soon. i've tried safari debug, and it doesn't work. so i'm screwed.

Aug 30, 05 - 08:36 pm Comment from: neomonkey

I still like iCab. Easy to turn off animations without having to buy a shareware plug-in like SAFT. It's even easy in IE, how embarassing for Apple.

Aug 31, 05 - 03:50 am Comment from: TheConfuzed1

An OS is never finished.

The day you stop developing your OS is the day that it becomes stale and begins its transition into obsolescence.
