New iPod coming soon? Apple places 60GB 5G iPod on 60-day ‘at risk’ list

“Without explicitly stating so, Apple has taken measures to allow itself room to make changes at the top of its iPod product line this spring, if it chooses to do so,” Prince McLean and Katie Marsal report for AppleInsider. “The Cupertino, Calif.-based company recently informed some of its partners and big box retailers that it has placed the top-of-the-line 60GB fifth-generation iPod on its 60-day ‘at risk’ list. The 30GB iPod was not placed on the list.”

McLean and Marsal report, “According to sources, when Apple makes note of an item being placed on an ‘at risk list,’ it could mean one of many things, or nothing at all. Simply, it’s the company’s way of warning resellers that it may make changes to that product, replace it with a newer model, offer a price reduction or discontinue it, among other things. Therefore, resellers should keep a close eye on their inventory management of such products… The 60GB iPod was placed on the 60-day at risk list about a month ago.”

“Apple’s forthcoming ‘true’ video iPod will feature a 4-inch display with a quarter-inch border, allowing the device to maintain dimensions typical of previous iPods,” Ryan Katz reported on March 2 for Think Secret. “The new iPod remains on track for an announcement possibly as soon as late March or early April but sources caution the roll-out could be pushed back pending an agreement with the movie industry on distributing feature-length content.”

Think Secret also has a report headlined, “With video iPod debut near, time is running out for Apple to strike big movie content deals,” which can be found here.

  1. I think this will be timed for the iTMS third anniversary. Especially seeing how this notice was supposedly put out about a month ago. 60 days from a month ago brings you to around the end of April.

    13.3″ MacBook & 17″ (and maybe 13″) MacBook Pro on/around April 1.

“Real” vPod and full length movies on iTMS – April 28.

    Sounds good to me.

  2. Well there it is, it’s Friday night and everyone is out having a good time and not posting their useless dribble here from work on their Windows PC.

    See your all busted.

But MacDude, here’s here to play with you, to get you all upset.

You can vent at MacDude, he doesn’t care what you think of him.

So with no further ado and to get back on topic, like anyone really cares what it was.

When Apple announces it you all will dig the loose change out of your sofas and call Apple.

Me I’m done, video on the “pod” just plain takes too long to bother.

Then theres the limited selection at iTMS, sure I like Lost, but it rarely comes out.

Music, well I got so much that it ould be years before I get tired of it all.

I got a kickbutt PowerMac and 30″, I’m in sweet heaven.

The rest of you can talk among yourselves.

  3. wow, by coming here i’d swear i was eavesdropping on some middle school kids, instead of the “on the whole more intelligent” mac users we’re supposed to be.

anyhow, i must be the only person in the world who is satisfied with the video playback on the 5g ipod. i won’t be too upset if apple comes out with a new one – i like mine just fine.

  4. 80 gigger….screw that….

They need to make a 1petabyte ipod nano. Equip it with iSight, a microphone, Airport, and a remote. Then load it with iMovie and Photo booth. Then what you do is everytime you have a kid you strap a new one around their neck. Now the child’s life is self documenting. You keep the remote until they are 18…so you can bust them when they are misbehaving.

    Apple can then rebrand iLife.

  5. Cool — my 60GB black iPod Video will be a collector’s item; wonder how much I could get for it on eBay…

(still need to figure out how to convert my old 20GB 4G iPod to a portable hard drive; would be perfect for storing photos and text files when I’m traveling with the iBook, then upload them to my Mactel when I get home…)
