Apple iTunes Music Store shows explicit porn-style album artwork without warning
Tuesday, July 12, 2005 - 09:24 AM EDT

Apparently, iTunes Music Store album artwork is not being carefully looked at before being posted. Apple-X.net's "michaelangelo" reports, "Earlier in the day (Sunday, July 10th 2005), I stumbled across an EP with some racy artwork that should most definitely be marked as being explicit, or at least censored until downloaded."

The EP is "I Cry" by Akira Yamamoto. "michaelangelo" reports, "If you look at the artwork you can tell that some female genitalia of the southern region will be seen once downloaded... With Apple offering higher resolution artwork these days there are going to be some mad parents if a child comes across this and buys it. There is no warning whatsoever that the artwork contains explicit material."

After some further investigation (hey, somebody had to do it!) MacDailyNews has also found MORE explicit artwork that's not labeled on Apple's iTunes Music Store:

Digital Recall's album "Do You Remember"
Markus F's EP "Gates of Eden"
Budapest & C-Base's single "In The Beginning"
Trance Rocker's single "Behind Blue Eyes"

MacDailyNews Take: You'd think the record label's name for all of the above releases would raise a red flag at Apple. It's "Dirrty Budapest." In order to illustrate the "where do you draw the line?" argument, does anyone consider Liz Phair's "Exile in Guyville" album cover to be "explicit?" Should Apple be labeling artwork "explicit" as they do with lyrics? And where the hell is Tipper when you need her?

Because it's not like you would see that in a regular shop or anything.

Jul 12, 05 - 10:46 am Comment from: natis

can anyone say prude? i don't find that album cover to be explicit or offensive. it's no different if a kid goes into a mall and buys the album or looks through the posters of playmates that certain music stores offer. if parents are concerned about their kids, then be actively involved in their kids' lives. but a parent's concern over the content his/her child may see should in no way effect or prohibit my rights.

Jul 12, 05 - 10:50 am Comment from: MCCFR

Better scratch Country Life by Roxy Music at the same time, or how about Blind Faith's eponymous effort.

In America, you have a multi-billion dollar porn industry, and MTV has videos featuring the objectification of women on a daily basis, but this ridiculous story will dominate the news cycle because of a flash of pubic hair.

What a strange world we live in…

Jul 12, 05 - 10:59 am Comment from: audioboy

natis is EXACTLY right. while I might not have used the word "prude", it does fit in this case. If iTMS isn't showing me anything more than I can see at Sam Goody... then stfu. Again, be involved in your kids' lives if it's going to even be an issue.

Its Art, should Apple censor art?

Jul 12, 05 - 11:25 am Comment from: oldmacfan

Very odd, I am using tiger and safari 2.0 and can no longer click the links Only two worked and then none of them worked, but when I switch to camino, they work over and over again.

Jul 12, 05 - 11:25 am Comment from: heh

Got any more artwork that will offend me? I'm only slightly anoyed so far...

Jul 12, 05 - 11:27 am Comment from: Mac ed

Boring!!!... boobs and ass... so what? just turn on MTV BASE.

Jul 12, 05 - 11:28 am Comment from: John

I think the Record company that allowed this cover should be responsible.

Jul 12, 05 - 11:33 am Comment from: matt

dude, that's NOT art. that's pornographic. apple should do something about it - not ban it, but maybe censor the "artwork". because i'm sorry, but you can't walk into sam goody and actually find posters where you can see the girls' naughty bits. they cover them up, albeit barely. of course parents should play a role in the lives of their kids but they shouldn't have to watch over their kids' shoulder when they browse the iTMS. and yeah it's also true that MTV and the such objectify women all the time... but that doesn't make this okay. it's not really apple's fault, either - just a lack of foresight. they can do something about this and i think they should.

meh, why did i even post this? people are just going to argue with me unless they already agree with me. that's the funny thing about forums - rarely do you meet someone who is willing to actually try seeing another's point of view.

Jul 12, 05 - 11:38 am Comment from: Tom Strong

Get over it prudes! I just went and bought every one of those songs, so screw you First Amendment-hating loonies!

Jul 12, 05 - 11:40 am Comment from: lilaliend

I can't believe what I'm reading from your comments.

There is a HUGE difference between supermodel posters and album covers like a few of Liz Phairs. Those don't show "pink". This album cover clearly does. It's not just an exposed a** but also highly visible genitalia.

N yes, art should be censored when it's explicit… music is censored when it is.

Jul 12, 05 - 11:44 am Comment from: twdldee

Funny that all the music is techno. I guess their music sucks so bad that they need some gimmick like showing some poon-tang. The first one is really good, an very nice shot of butt and oyster, but the rest are a bit kitsch.

Jul 12, 05 - 11:47 am Comment from: Markus

Up yours One Gay from Finland! You commie!

Jul 12, 05 - 11:50 am Comment from: Wilfred Hildonen

As a non-US artist, I remember how surprised I was when I learnt that seriously working artists in the US of A found it necessary to add a warning to their web sites that they might conatin images of human beings in the nude!
And if I am not much mistaken, the very same nation where this is considered perfectly normal, is the world's largest producer (and consumer, too, perhaps?) of pornography.
Art should be censored when it is explicit... music is censored when it is. Yes, it is - in USA. Through iTunes and the Internet we can now take part in this in the rest of the world, too. Does it make the world any better? I doub't it.
Do we end in burning hell if we swear a little? I seriously doubt it. So, what is it all about then?
I simply don't know...

Jul 12, 05 - 11:50 am Comment from: Anim8r

Hmmm, as far as I can tell you have to specifically search for those songs to see the artwork. So this is in fact no different from searching through the bins at your local music retailer. Possibly safer since a judicious parent will monitor their childs computer use (as I do).

Jul 12, 05 - 11:54 am Comment from: dennis

Oh heavens! Genitalia! Avert your eyes and those of your children lest they melt and the hand of god smite thee!

True, there is more than boobs and butt here. But why are people so afraid of their children seeing human bodies? This isn't even sex--as far as I saw.

BTW, WTF is up with this page? First click on the links get me nothing but this page again. Second click opens the link in iTunes, but the window for this page closes.

Jul 12, 05 - 11:55 am Comment from: What is the best answer?

The line between pornography and art is user defined.

If an artist feels that thier subject matter is art and suitable for all
eyes...AND Apple agrees not to require the EXPLICT warning to
downloaders...for art's sake and to not play hardball with musicians.

Then...the adults should take responsibility for thier children's actions.
Even if it means having "downloading sessions" with thier children and
making iTunes a no-no unsupervised until they have a better idea of
what thier parents expect from them. C'est la vie.

Most parents can't keep up with thier children's activities...unless
they've built a REALLY good jail. LOL

CT =======]-------------- Mustarding the situation

Jul 12, 05 - 12:03 pm Comment from: European...

In Europe this is considered erotic.

In conservative USA this is porn, but the rest of the USA is THE main porn producer in the world ...

Stop being hypocrite!

Re: Markus

I hope you're making a lame attempt at humour because One Guy from Finland was poking fun.

If on the other hand you're some narrow-minded fundamentalist then you're a useless fucking narrow-minded lump of shit.

After September 11, Madrid, Bali and now London you can take you're gay-bashing views and shove it up your arse.

And the reason I get so feral about these flamers is that I was once flamed and I now take no prisoners.

If you want to make a comment then do so, but if you just want be offensive then someone might just get offended.

Now Markus you've got a choice. Apologise to One Guy from Finland, don't do it again, or bugger off. Alternatively you could try having a go at me but I'll just keep coming for you. You're on notice mate no more narrow-mindedness.

Come on guys let's be civil I hate having to act like a teacher especially when I'm on term break.

I'm going back to the cricket there are no Markuses there.

Jul 12, 05 - 12:26 pm Comment from: DistantThunder

First Amendment protected! Ha ha ha. I know some judges may concur ... others, more sensible, do not. The First Amendment was never intended to protect pornography. Nor should it. People who intentionally expose children to pornography should be jailed.

I agree that parents should be involved. But then again, no amount of involvement short of locking down the computer will protect kids from accidentally stumbling across things they (nor adults) should see.

Jul 12, 05 - 12:36 pm Comment from: hammer

"The EP is "I Cry" by Akira Yamamoto. "michaelangelo" reports"

Yeah, and now every 14-year old boy will search for this now that it's been brought to their attention by this Michaelangelo character. I doubt anyone would have ever noticed had he not said anything, because Im so sure that everyone's just itchin for that new Akira Yamamoto single.

Probably the smarter thing to have done would have been to email or call Apple directly without making it a huge media spectacle. Bottom line is people are more interested in bringing attention to themselves than solving problems. 'oh look at me im a huge frickin hero for finding a teeny tiny photo of some girls cookie on a record album.'

Jul 12, 05 - 12:44 pm Comment from: RT

At the very least, there should be some way to set parental controls to block explicit album covers. Even better, Apple should refuse to include them in iTunes. Those crying censorship are full of it--this is not the government. Besides, Apple bars pornographic podcasts, and that's AUDIO!

I don't get on the interweb very much, but my friend from church sent me this link. I'm glad I could view it on my Gateway, I didn't know they could read Apple internets. Anyway, our church group is gonna get together and start a boycott of the ITunes. Not only do they sell porn music art, but most of their music lacks good Christian values. I don't let my 5 homeschooled children use the interweb, because it is too easy to get linked to sin! And they will never get one of them IPods!!!

God Bless,
Dorinda

Jul 12, 05 - 01:46 pm Comment from: Linda Foster-Whittman (Elijah, GA)

This article is showing us how this country has moved so far from the Christian ideal. It's no wonder that every Democrat in the country has some sort of Apple product, look at what the company is promoting -- Homo porn, hacked music, dirty talk, and foul recipes.

Here in Georgia, we strive to maintain a Christian lifestyle promoting the virtues of the Lord Jesus Christ, and this kind of porno has no place on the Internets.

Who wants to see pussy in the summer time? Certainly not the god damn Christian woman!

Jul 12, 05 - 01:52 pm Comment from: Candie Hakala

I speak the same sentiments as Mrs. McCaulley. I too go heard of this internet site from a member of my small group Bible study. Although I don't have any children, I do not let my two lovely nephews use their Ipods when they come over to my house for Sunday supper. I believe that the good lord didn't not intend for this music to be created. Furthermore, it don't worship in His name. I hope our God fearing president does something about this mess because pornagraphy was created by the devil to take the Lord's children away from Him.

God bless,

Jul 12, 05 - 02:02 pm Comment from: natis

I can't tell if the Linda-Foster Whittman poster is a troll.

In regards to iTunes having parental control... yes, it should but that would still mean parental involvement which, let's face it, most parents say they are involved with their kids' lives but it's more lip service than anything else. Most TVs now come with V Chips and every show receives a rating that enables parents to decide what they think their child(ren) should watch. Yet people still bitch and want what they don't like taken off the air. Hey, I find christian/jewish/muslim TV shows offensive and I deplore the reality tv game shows/soap operas and celebrity gossip shows that everyone seems to be gravitating towards (live your own life, don't waste time watching the lives of others) so guess what, I seldom watch TV.

If something doesn't jive with your religion, fine, but don't let your religion affect my freedom.

Jul 12, 05 - 02:24 pm Comment from: Kassandra

Bible study=\ I swear, whenever an issue like this comes up, the religeous people get all involved and say "zOMG THIS MUSIC IS SATANIST! LETS GO BURN DOWN THE STUDIO AND LYNCH THE ARTISTS!" I suppose that's no different then the mentality of witch hunting from 200 years ago, or the crusades. I have nothing against those who choose to believe what they will, but I do wish that these people would think for themselves and look at the world we live in, or in the case of the free world, the countries we live in, and their principals of freedom. I think people just need to learn how to accept difference. If people could do that, I'm sure half the social problems every industrialized country has would be gone.

And one comment for Candie, your nephews put the music on their iPods, if they didn't like it, they wouldn't have done that. No reason to demonize a wonderful peice of technology simply because you don't like the content someone you love chose to put on it. Since they chose it, why not demonize them anstead? And about the Porn industry, I'll agree it's probably caused some problems in this country, but what's wrong with sex? It's perfectly natural for anyone, and what's wrong with celebrating that and showing it off? Who knows, maybe the people who started Playboy 40 years ago were crazy, maybe a little off the mainstream, but I guarentee you, our world would be alot less entertaining today if it wasn't for the creation of the porn industry.

Anyways, thats my 2 cents on the cover art subject, I don't think a tiny image of nutidy on cover art is an issue. If someone thinks their kid might get off on that, chances are they have much better resources for porn. Google is a great example. Either take a more active roll in their life and hold their hand (which will likly cause more problems then it solves if they're over 13 or so), try to stop them from listening to music, or just let them find their own way for once with something they were probably shown lots of by now in school anyways.

I am sure that you really are quite a lovely person. I will also include you in my prayers tonight.

Know that I hope you don't think I take offense to your opinion about my God fearing nephews. They really are nice boys, bless their hearts. I have my house rules and when they come through my doors, they take off their hats, take off their shoes, and hand me their Ipods and video games machines. They sure do enjoy reading nice Bible stories. I feel it is a vacation from the trials and tribulations of Satan. They love me very much and how dare you tell me otherwise. In Jesus name.

Dearest Jesus,

I live amongst sinners and heathens. They do not perform their daily rituals and, yaay, they do look upon thy naked flesh. Yahweh, how I fear that they love it so. These wanton and lustful cravings are . . . are to be shunned, as has been taught us. But, yaay, they are a forceful lot and their influence is among us at every turn. Even when I venture forth to purchase thine hosannas with the blood, sweat & tears of my brow. I cannot avert my gaze from their puerile and fleshly temptations . . . and, yaay, I am becoming weak at their onslaught. I . . . I fear that I will soon succumb to . . . to . . . to their . . . incredibly well-endowed b- . . . uhmm . . . to their lustful . . . and . . . and truly beautiful physique- . . . I mean, dirty flesh . . . my spirit is weak . . . flesh . . . flesh is . . . soooo . . . f#*king HOT!!! Holy Christ, this feels good! Why in the hell have I ever resisted this before?!? Are you f#*king KIDDING ME?!?!?!? UhhhnnHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!

What is NASCAR? I do have a watch that I wear on my left hand...but it is one of those cheapos from Walmarts, Timex I think it is.

i sent an letter to president bush about this outrageus hapening on the internet.

if you want to send a letter to our president, i think this is his address:

america's white house
3600 new york avenue ne
washington, dc

when me and the kids go into town (atlanta) i am outraged by the nude statues and all the artisstic statues that show vagginas, tiddies, cox, and other body parts. i guess thats what happens when you let a niger into office for mayhor. there is a big one near that suntrust bank skyskrapper that shows five or six lesbean women standing and showing there tiddies.

whatever this itunes is, there should be a system where parents can stop there kids from seeing what they dont want them to on it.

they should also expand whatever hymns and christian gospel they have on there. good christian music never killed anyone.

our president needs to have vchips put on this itunes.

im going to pray for all of the sinners out there and hope that all the sinners stay out my south. i think all them sinners is moving up north and to canadia.

god bless all of us and W is STILL the president.

Jul 12, 05 - 04:39 pm Comment from: art? please...

"...Its Art, should Apple censor art?"
"...seen far worse things then nude erotic art"

Apple didn't filter these covers because the bands are all so obscure and sh**ty that no one noticed.

As for them being art, well please...

They're nudie pics. Just because the parents of a twelve-year-old doesn't want some skank's picture in their son's music collection doesn't mean they're pro-censorship... Besides, if the music was any good, they wouldn't have to resort to T 'n A to sell it in the first place...

Jul 12, 05 - 04:43 pm Comment from: nonameforme

i believe that the real deal here is that Apple actually has this in their iTunes Music Store without any warning - regardless of whether you can purchase this CD elsewhere or whether you can find worse things on the internet, you shouldn't have to worry about stumbling across something like that by just browsing through the music store. and it's not just children - some adults choose to live their life with those high morals as well - not everyone loves to see porn everywhere, so a warning that the picture is indeed "explicit" is good for them..... and if you're someone who doesn't care then what's the warning to you? you can still see it if you want whether the warning is there or not.

Jul 12, 05 - 04:55 pm Comment from: Jared White

I can't believe some of the ridiculous comments I'm reading here. First of all, it's obvious most of the "Christians" on here are just mocking trolls. So never mind that.

The real facts of the matter are that some people will think these covers are fine, some will find them explicit, and some will have varying opinions (such as nudity itself may not be problem, but focusing on genitalia is gratuitous [my opinion]). I'm a Christian, and I'm no prude, but I do think people have the right to assume that when they're browsing around a public, commercial, open to the family-friendly public site that they won't find this kind of stuff *unless they specifically say it's OK*. Case in point: Google's image search: it will do its best to filter out porn and other potentially-offensive material *unless you turn the filter off*. Then you can find whatever stuff you're looking for.

Remember, folks, this isn't about "censorship", it's about giving people the tools they need to block stuff they don't want to see. It's laughable that the people complaining about free speech want to FORCE other people to look at/listen to what THEY think is good.

Jared

All I can say is, you'd have to search rather diligently to "stumble" on these images.

They look like euro stuff that wasn't censored for use in the US. Would a
