Cool. The advertising continues!

Jun 10, 06 - 02:10 pm Comment from: bobb

you'd think they'd at least say "Comes with OSX- The world’s most advanced operating system"

Jun 10, 06 - 02:12 pm Comment from: THE MAC GOD

I think the ad would have been more powerful if the black macbook had the white bg... and the white macbook had a black bg. It would be a great juxtaposition. But, that would only really work in magazines, not newspapers.

Apple sells more of the iBook/MacBook than it does of any other computer model.

With the Best Buy deal, back-to-school shopping and now aggressive advertising, it would appear that Apple is not concerned with delivery issues.

Q4 is going to be very strong. I would pay close attention to management's guidance during the July earnings conference call.

Apple's guidance is the trigger required to see AAPL start going up again.

Funny that they used the word 'power'.

Apple really needs to stop advertising the design

When Leopard comes out I want at least one ad for it

Jun 10, 06 - 02:32 pm Comment from: clyde

Yeah, they're nice, and I want one. I also want the article to mention the adware, spyware, virus-free unixy goodness of OS X.

Otherwise, John Q. Uninformed will simply compare these features to similar Dells and Sonys.

Hollywood "Power" couple... perfect words on Entertainment's magazine.

"With the Best Buy deal, back-to-school shopping and now aggressive advertising, it would appear that Apple is not concerned with delivery issues."

I just placed an order with Best Buy yesterday for the 2.0 GHz white MacBook. They are backordered, and my MacBook is expected to ship in 1-2 weeks. Best Buy awarded our classroom a $2,500 technology grant, however, so I don't mind waiting.

We received the award in January, but I wanted to wait out the Intel upgrades before we bought a new Mac for more iLife in the classroom.

I know there are lots of people who visit MDN and don't think much of Best Buy. After winning this award for the kids in my classroom, my opinion of Best Buy has definitely improved. The fact that they now sell more Macs doesn't hurt either.

Just when Apple is getting serious about converting Windows users they pull this stupid stunt about charging extra just for the color black.

Apple should be trying to dispel people's belief that Mac's are artificially more expensive, not reinforcing it.

Sing along with me:
"Ebony and Ivory..."

OK, don't, but WTH, Apple could do worse wink

To: The Other Steve:

Hey dummy, first off, you get more computer - check the specs and come back.
Secondly, makers of all kinds of products do this all the time from cars to computers - special editions get more dough.
Don't like it, buy a white one.
Don't like white, buy a MBP.
Too much, or you don't like silver, get a PC.

Wahhh.

The keyboard is nice.

Jun 10, 06 - 03:26 pm Comment from: macbones

try the "calculator" keyboard. You'll like it.

andy:

Played around with one at the Apple store in Reno. The keys are a little close together, (I'm used to desktops), but have a nice feel/response to them. The black one is already on my Christmas list.

Speaking of advertising, I see "Lucky Charms" (the cereal) is giving away free songs from iTunes songs as well as "Skittles" (the candy). Nice to see that again, I missed having Pepsi give away free songs earlier this year.

"i still havnt seen one in the 'flesh' but i dont think im liking the calculator keyboard, bit retro"

I had to read many reviews about the MacBook before being sold. Between the keyboard and the integrated graphics, I was reluctant.

My iBook G3 700's keyboard, however, flexes when I type (I learned on manual typewriters), so a more solid keyboard is appealing.

The integrated GMA 950 graphics bothered me, too, especially considering that rev. B may include dedicated graphics (but, who knows). Again, after reading how the integrated graphics affects performance, I felt better. Apparently, only 3D gaming will truly suffer, and sense this computer will serve a classroom, that is a non-issue.

iMovie and iDVD performance appear to nearly match Intel equipped iMacs, and that's what we need.

Sure, for the same money we could have gone for an iMac with dedicated graphics, but a recent attempt to break into our classroom made portability desirable. The MacBook will not be left at school overnight.

it's good that Mac is having more advertising now. I wouldn't have known about Macs if my friend couldn't do 2349872349 more things than I could could with my dell...

long live apple!

quote: "The keys are a little close together, (I'm used to desktops)..."

The spacing of the keys is the same as any full-size desktop or laptop keyboard. I don't know where this rumor comes from but I've heard it elsewhere too. Maybe it's the appearance that makes people think the spacing is different.

"they pull this stupid stunt about charging extra just for the color black."

Go talk to the 'stupid' Ford dealers who are charging $20,000 over sticker for the new Mustangs, and getting it.

It's called supply and demand dude. Don't like it, don't buy it. Besides, the black gives you more for you money.

mw 'color'

Jun 10, 06 - 04:59 pm Comment from: Old Fart

Dave:

You could be right about that. Many times what the eyes see can influence what the fingers feel. As I used the one in the store it seemed my fingers tended to get in each others way. Could've been my perception, could've been caused by my posture, having to lean over the display table the notebook was on. But I still liked it a lot.

A child is black, a child is white
The whole world looks upon the sight, a beautiful sight

And now a child can understand
That this is the law of all the land, all the land

The world is black, the world is white
It turns by day and then by night
A child is black, a child is white
Together they grow to see the light, to see the light

And now at last we plainly see
We'll have a dance of Liberty, Liberty!

I got a MacBook (white) a few weeks ago - well, the first week they came out, whenever that was - and all I can say is *smokin'*. No, and I don't mean "oh, it runs too hot." Woosie-babies. This thing does NOT run too hot. What do I do with it? I use my MacBook for EVERYTHING. I got the 2.0GHz model and I upgraded it to 2GB of RAM. I run mostly Intel native/universal applications under OS X. Rosetta sucks anyway you slice it.

I have one work application that requires Windows XP. I bought Parallels. I run Windows XP in OS X and it screams. Mind you I am NOT doing anything with 3D graphics. I do not "game" either, other than simple casual games I can begin and end within 15 minutes - again, I'm not a gamer.

I run some of my very old DOS games using DOSBOX (universal). My daughter uses her MacBook (yes, bought two) to play an old game she likes that requires Windows 98 and Direct X. Yes, she is running Parallels too. She has the 1.83 GHZ model with 1GB of RAM. Works great.

The key is get at least 1GB of RAM. They struggle with 512MB because of the shared video memory usage.

Awesome laptop for the price.

Macbook Owner--

Exciting! makes it hard to not upgrade my tibook now. Also, makes me wonder what the next few chips are capable of!

Cute ad.

Jun 11, 06 - 01:17 am Comment from: skeeter

Hey, You in LA and Macromancer, re: Black MacBooks:
You don't get more computer for the money in black. The color black literally costs $150 more. Check the specs and come back:

white 2.0/512/80 GB=$1349
black 2.0/512/80 GB=$1499

Then again, they do have to mix all those colors together to make black, so perhaps that justifies the price.

And who said it was some kinda "special edition?" Why isn't the black iPod more expensive? Obviously there is demand for it. Fine and well. Just don't go saying the price is necessarily justified.

Are these computers male and female?

Which one is the male, which one the female?

Jun 11, 06 - 07:58 pm Comment from: Donald

Funny that most people I know who's bought a MacBook bought the black version. I guess Apple correctly calculated that people are willing to pay a premium for the sexy black MacBook over the cute white MacBook.

Hey Michael..the teacher...great web page..great tool to teach kids..no wonder Best Buy gave you the tech grant!

Jun 11, 06 - 11:41 pm Comment from: Michael Schmitt

Thanks, Mike.

The amazing thing is that the Best Buy te@ch award application required only a written (online) description of our project.

We were one of two classes to win in Bakersfield, CA. Our class sent Tim Ford, manager of our local Best Buy, thank you letters and a DVD copy of "The 9th Planet".

I just returned from a whirlwind trip through Europe. Surprise surprise, all along the way I saw lots of new Mac notebook computers.

On the plane over there were several MacBook Pros (and not a Dell or HP in sight) being used on the plane. MBPs can be identified easily because they say Macbook Pro on them right under the screen.

In the London airport I spotted several Apple laptops heading in and out of security X-ray machines. More than once, my 12" Powerbook was accompanied by an Apple laptop ahead of and behind it going thru X-ray. I am not alone any longer.

On the plane home there was a new MacBook (in its box) packed in the overhead. In the seat in front of me two young filmakers were each playing with 15" MacBook Pros.

In the seat behind me a bubbleheaded brunette was playing with her recently purchased black MacBook.

After years of feeling like a loner Mac roadtripper suddenly, Mac laptops are popping up all over. It's about freak'n time!

Well, well, well. Apple is no longer emphasizing the Apple in its name. Strange. This is going to lead to more confusion. So many PC users in the forums I visit think Mac is the name of the company. Now just the logo + Mac showing on the advertisement is going to add to the confusion. MAC = Media Access Control address for networks. Mac is nickname for Macintosh, the operating system and computers made by Apple Computer. With advertisements like these, getting people to recognize Apple Computer is the name of the company, or understand why the logo is AAPL on the stock exchange is going to be harder, or why the website http://www.apple.com/ is going to be harder. And http://www.mac.com/ just leads people to the .Mac service package, and not straight to Apple's website showing the hardware and software. Brand identity is great, but to get switchers to come on board, who have never heard of you before.

What is the big deal with an Apple ad? Come on. Act like you have seen one before.

To the critics of Apple's ads/campaign: what the hell do you know about advertising? Are you all ad execs, or what?

Now that you have or want the world's greatest computer and OS, get a life!
