Apple cuts Kanye West performance from QuickTime stream of special event
Monday, September 12, 2005 - 01:45 PM EST

Apple has cut the performance of Kanye West from the QuickTime stream of its special event in San Francisco.

In the original QuickTime Stream, Kayne West's performance was included along with its attendant explicit language. The total run time (TRT) of the QT stream was originally 1:04:57. Now it clocks in at 48:15.

We're not sure if Apple cut it becaus of the explicti language, because it just plain sounded so bad, or because West has been critical of the Hurricane Katrina recovery efforts during a national telethon broadcast and then again on the U.S. daytime show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, or for some other reason.

The link revised QuickTime stream is here.

MacDailyNews Take: A note about the aftermath of hurricanes: MacDailyNews and iPodDailyNews staff weathered four hurricanes between 1996-1999 (Hurricane Bertha, Hurricane Fran, Hurricane Bonnie, Hurricane Floyd) while living in Wilmington, NC and Surf City, NC. Direct hits, all of them.

In each case, people would get all fired up about the "slow" response, start screaming about why they couldn't go back to their homes, etc. We did the same thing after our first hurricane. Until we learned a few simple rules:
• You can't go back to your house if there are no roads leading to it and/or there is water where there wasn't before.
• Bureaucracies are slow, love to wrap themselves in red tape and, if there are no roads for you, there are no roads for them, so it takes awhile to get assistance back into the damaged area.
• Get a generator if you want electricity immediately.
• Things cannot be instantly fixed.
• You won't have Internet access or cable TV for quite some time. Count yourself among the lucky ones if you still have a roof over your head.
• The initial reports of lives lost were always too high.
• Get used to hearing bulldozers and dump trucks because they'll be driving around while you're trying to sleep for months.
• Don't try to ride out a hurricane if you live on a sand bar (or in a bowl below sea level).
• People make mistakes, but generally, the government officials were trying to help the best they knew how before, during, and after each hurricane.
• We learned how to do it better each time. Louisiana will, too.

After each hurricane hit, new people would move in and the next hurricane would hit and they would start screaming about "slow" response and yelling to go back to their house via washed out roads and the rest of us would look at them and try to explain, usually unsuccessfully. Then they would learn and look at the next batch of newcomers and try to explain to them.

When the next hurricane hits somewhere, the government response won't be instant, electricity won't come back on immediately, and people who haven't been through it before will begin to scream about "slow" response.

As for Katrina, response has been slower before: http://www.charleston.net/stories/default_pf.aspx?newsID=38758

"For MDN, I have but one question. During your hurricane experience, how many days were you stuck in a sports stadium without proper access to food and medicine?"

I may be presumptuous, but I think MDN/iPodDN covered it in a bullet point above:
• Don't try to ride out a hurricane if you live on a sand bar (or in a bowl below sea level).

MDN/iPodDN seem to be a bit too smart to have gone to the Superdome in the first place. It was a "refuge of last resort," not a vacation resort.

The failure here is that of the Welfare state that makes people so dependent that they become victims of their own incapability to take care of themselves in a disaster. The government is not your daddy, indeed.

I LIVE IN A HIGHLY VUNERABLE HURRICANE REGION

1: Cat 4 or 5, you board up, take what you can and leave, kiss your house goodbye.

2: Cat 3, you can stay and board up, but better to leave, expect to be highly uncomfortable for up to 4 weeks.

3: Cat 1 & 2, you can stay, expect to be uncomfortable for up to a week.

4: Portable generators cannot run air conditioners, refrigerators, washers or dryers. Your clothes and bedding will be damp from humidity, as welll as paintings and other things, seal them in air tight bags before the storm.

5: YOU WILL BE FSKING BORED OUT OF YOUR SKULL, no TV, no Mac, no good light to read books (unless you have a generator, candlelight s*cks) You will be sleeping a lot to save battery juice. High rise buildings are not fun with no AC and elevators. Have cards and play board games with friends.

6: People will almost KILL for ICE, there will be rationing, so bring lots of your family and friends.

7: NO MONEY - cash is king, so many stores are completely helpless to sell anything because everything is computerized and barcoded requiring electricity, no price stickers, no credit cards, no checks, nothing else. Banks are closed, get your cash early, they like to close even earlier than needed to allow their employees to prepare.

8: Have gas barbeque with a several tanks of gas, you'll be cooking everything that is defrosting in your freezer. Hot water will be a commodidy, have large pots to boil water on the grill to wash and clean.

9: Fill up everything you got with water, have 5 gal buckets to flush toilets with, get a few camp showers.

10: Canned food, bottled water, lots of gas should already be stocked long before hurricane season arrives. Just rotate stock in your normal use.

11: Don't stay in a flood plain or where sea level can rise up to 30 ft above normal. If your dwelling sits on land that can be washed away, it will and you lose everything.

12: Have alternate places to go and network with other people. Prepare for the eventuality you will lose your home and town. Be familiar with another location so you can transplant yourself and start over. Because you might not be able to go back ever again.

13: IF you some dumbass who can't help themselves and help others, being a burden instead of a help, then for cristsake, leave. Kill yourself.

Hey Good Job - My great grandmother, originally from Sicily, thought Mussolini was a great man. My grandmother called the Japanese "yellow bastards" and brazil nuts "n*gger toes". It's a generational thing. God knows what socially unacceptable utterenace have escaped the lips of your grandma. Give the old bird a break...

Steve Jobs and Good Job,

Thanks for providing the context and the quote this time.

I get something different than you out of it, though. I have a friend who was homeless, and is sort of working his way out of it now - problem is, he tells me that now that he's "experienced a kind of freedom not many Americans experience" he finds it hard to stay at a job. He simply gets bored, or sick of something or someone, and just stops showing up. For him, he would be a "lucky evacuee", b/c he doesn't have anything to lose. That's what I took her comment to mean - that those who didn't have anything might for a while be having a nicer lifestyle than what they were accustomed to.

Does that make sense? How do you see or take it differently?

Sep 12, 05 - 03:37 pm Comment from: Steve Jobs

Hey Not spoon fed by mass media via iPodDailyNews.com.

That does not really help those who do not have the means to escape New Orleans.

That also does not explain why the federal dollars were cut from the corps of Engineers, effectively stopping the construction of levees.

Oh, I know your response. Everyone should build their own levee, right?

Sep 12, 05 - 03:39 pm Comment from: Steve Jobs

Don't be daft. These people weren't homeless until now. You can't honestly believe that Barbara Bush meant that.

Sep 12, 05 - 03:40 pm Comment from: RePlay

I caught the unedited feed, but skipped to the end after about 3 seconds of his performance, so I gues I didn't miss much. Did they say he was some kind of award winner?

MacAnimal, you really should have stopped at 12. Nice common sense stuff for "normal" people, but not everyone is so lucky or blessed. True, some people are burdens. That's where compassion and grace come in, and it's one big reason why we're better than animals.

I'm sickened to see someone suggest another human should kill themselves - what a sad commentary on yourself.

Sep 12, 05 - 03:46 pm Comment from: Not spoon fed by mass media via iPodDailyNews

You must have missed this portion of my post:

"The failure here is that of the Welfare state that makes people so dependent that they become victims of their own incapability to take care of themselves in a disaster. The government is not your daddy, indeed."

Obviously, I think we can agree that the Superdome and Convention Center should have had a very strong police presence and enough food and water for 7-10 days. Especially as a "refuge of last resort," you'd have sick, old, and poor people there - and also quite a few criminals. You'll have to look at the local government to see why these necessities weren't in place.

Also, why weren't city's prisoners transferred inland by the state, instead of being released to the streets to loot, rape, snipe, and kill? Did they think these criminals would magically find Jesus and start saving people and defending unprotected electronic and jewelry stores? Hello, Governor? Hello, Mayor?

Sep 12, 05 - 03:46 pm Comment from: Bill

To whoever isn't brave enough to sign their name:

The mayor can order the National Guard to do whatever she says. They report to her NOT the Feds. If they can drive a duece-and-a-half they can drive a damn school bus. I bet she could have had 40 qualified drivers in under an hour.

Sep 12, 05 - 04:01 pm Comment from: Bill

To Steve Jobs - The levees were designed for a maximum Cat 3 hurricane from the very beginning and everyone knew it. Louisiana receives a disproportionate amount of Federal funding, even more than California. When, in your opinion, does the State of Louisiana become repsonsible for it's own safety?

Sep 12, 05 - 04:02 pm Comment from: Step

Steve Jobs,

I didn't hear or see her, I only read the comments. Yes, I did take it that she meant that, and yes, I do believe that a lot of the people there were already homeless. I don't see what else she might have meant. I mean, she didn't say middle class, she said underprivileged.

It was, certainly, politically incorrect to acknowledge that this disaster is benefitting some people, but that doesn't mean it isn't true. In fact, it very much is, even though it is a disaster for many more. I personally don't mind so much when people are real instead of saying what they "should" say, or people want them to say.

So what about her statement is it that is so offensive? I mean, I can understand emotionally reacting to her statement and being upset, but when you think about it do you really disagree? Or do you think she meant something other than how I'm taking it? If so, what do you think she meant?

Sep 12, 05 - 04:04 pm Comment from: west

they cut it for the exact same reason they cut the U2 songs from the last special 'music event'

they dont want people to rip the audio / video. they simply dont have the copyright to play the track and certainly dont want to pay any royalties for playing the tracks.

"The mayor can order the National Guard to do whatever she says. They report to her NOT the Feds. If they can drive a duece-and-a-half they can drive a damn school bus. I bet she could have had 40 qualified drivers in under an hour."

Fact. George W. Bush has the legal authority to order national guard himself, as he did on Sept 11, 2001.

Fact. Requests for Guard troops were accepted, but the paperwork from Washington was not filed until Thursday, so they could not be deployed.

Kanye West's comments about Bush being racist were moronic at best and anyone that agrees with him only shows their own ignorance. Bush was the last rung in a long ladder of people responsible for responding to this disaster.

There were absolutely some things that could have been handled better, but the simple fact of the matter is, it was an unbelievable amount of devastation and impossible to help everyone at the same time. Sad but true. It wouldn't have made any difference if the President was George Bush, John Kerry, or Jesse Jackson.

Sep 12, 05 - 04:58 pm Comment from: Bill

John Mayer is a real musician? He just recycles the same crap over and over! Maybe he is an ok lyricist, but so is Kanye if anyone ever bothered to listen to him. It seems most of you write him off just for being a rap artist. You won't even consider appreciating it for what it is. Kayne has more creativity than JM will ever have. You have the right to love JM, but I for one just think he is ok and I enjoy listening to Kanye. By the way, I've never seen a bigger bunch of idiots than on this board. I really cannot believe some of the stupidity beeing said here.

MDN WORD: Anyone as in Does ANYONE know what they are taking about here?

Sep 12, 05 - 05:03 pm Comment from: Sol

Apple must know that this will look like censorship. The performer thanked them for letting him play after all the news about him. During the performance he did not say anything that would compromise Apple in any way, except of course the lyrics to hi Number One hit Gold Digger; in the version I saw those lyrics were censored with some obvious editing.

As for the live outburst, Kanye West spoke from the heart. If I saw people that looked like me abandoned to their fate by my government then labeled looters by the media I would feel the same way. We live in a society that loves to shoot the messenger. Had FEMA done a better job and the media shown less racism there would be no backlash against one of the best and most respected new artists.

Sep 12, 05 - 05:11 pm Comment from: Bill

Most of the public sees right through that political nonsense and does not blame Bush(i.e., see several polls from Democratic MSM media). This type of hate-filled ranting by the left just undermines them on other issues. Pretty pathetic that despite all of Bush's problems, the Dems haven't gained at all in the public's perception--nada, zero, zip! This is why.
Keeping it coming, liberals, whatever you do keep blaming Bush (and, now, his mother!) for things largely outside of their control.

Sep 12, 05 - 05:20 pm Comment from: Kanye West via iPodDailyNews

I'd like to admit that I'm a no-talented hack that shouldn't be as popular as I am. My rapping is sub-par, and the Apple performance was by far my worst performance ever because people weren't paying $75 a head to see me -- you didn't expect my digitally-enhanced best, did you? No, you got my hideously analog natural crap.

I'd further like to admit that rap is not real music, but just people talking fast to a beat using expletives that are entirely not necessary. I'd like to admit that rap music, the language, and the elements of "the projects" and "the ghetto" making their way into everyone's living rooms and iPods is destroying American society bit by bit.

Lastly, I'd like to say that -- duh -- of course when we people of color are stealing TVs after a disaster that it's looting ... but because "the man" called us looters first, we have to hate it and act like it doesn't apply. Maybe we'll make up our own word for it to put a positive spin, like lootah or loozle, like how we did with the N-word. Yeah, that's good stuff ... I'll get Snoop on the phone right now to add it to the vocabulary.

I have no idea whether Kanye West is talented or not. I'd never heard of him before his Bush comment but after that I wouldn't ever give him the time of day. I'm not much of a fan of rap although I do respect the creativity and talent it takes for any musical genre (btw anyone who thinks John Mayer is not talented has no idea what musical talent is). I saw an interview with rapper Master P, and although I'm not a fan of his either, I at least respect him as a person because, with regard to West's comments on Bush, he said you can't call someone a racist without really knowing them. I despise racism, but what I despise even more is ignorance. There is no racism without ignorance.

Sol,

that was silly. Have you read any of the multiple comments that explained this happened last year to U2 also? It's simply a record label thing, nothing more nothing less.

I for one like a great deal of hip-hop and rap. Those of you who are dismissing Kayne West simply b/c you don't like the genre aren't helping anyone (to anything other than a useless opinion). Those of you who do appreciate rap but didn't like / couldn't stand the performance, I can take your opinions more seriously. And if you're bashing John Mayer in return, well, that's just silly too.

bob, you should be specific about the stuff you think is stupid, since opinions are all over the board (no pun intended) on this one. It strikes me as amusing, though, that the thing you actually cared enough about to complain specifically was the criticism of Kayne's musical abilities, which is (arguably) the silliest of the arguments on the board.

Anyways, a sensible music lover ought to know that music is a very emotional and personal thing, not quantifiable, and experienced very differently by different people. So bashing someone else's favorite artist has to be one of the most unproductive and ignorant things you can do.

MW: soviet...nope, not relevant at all.

CNN has his approval rating at 39%
