Apple cuts Kanye West performance from QuickTime stream of special event
Monday, September 12, 2005 - 01:45 PM EST

Apple has cut the performance of Kanye West from the QuickTime stream of its special event in San Francisco.

In the original QuickTime Stream, Kayne West's performance was included along with its attendant explicit language. The total run time (TRT) of the QT stream was originally 1:04:57. Now it clocks in at 48:15.

We're not sure if Apple cut it becaus of the explicti language, because it just plain sounded so bad, or because West has been critical of the Hurricane Katrina recovery efforts during a national telethon broadcast and then again on the U.S. daytime show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, or for some other reason.

The link revised QuickTime stream is here.

MacDailyNews Take: A note about the aftermath of hurricanes: MacDailyNews and iPodDailyNews staff weathered four hurricanes between 1996-1999 (Hurricane Bertha, Hurricane Fran, Hurricane Bonnie, Hurricane Floyd) while living in Wilmington, NC and Surf City, NC. Direct hits, all of them.

In each case, people would get all fired up about the "slow" response, start screaming about why they couldn't go back to their homes, etc. We did the same thing after our first hurricane. Until we learned a few simple rules:
• You can't go back to your house if there are no roads leading to it and/or there is water where there wasn't before.
• Bureaucracies are slow, love to wrap themselves in red tape and, if there are no roads for you, there are no roads for them, so it takes awhile to get assistance back into the damaged area.
• Get a generator if you want electricity immediately.
• Things cannot be instantly fixed.
• You won't have Internet access or cable TV for quite some time. Count yourself among the lucky ones if you still have a roof over your head.
• The initial reports of lives lost were always too high.
• Get used to hearing bulldozers and dump trucks because they'll be driving around while you're trying to sleep for months.
• Don't try to ride out a hurricane if you live on a sand bar (or in a bowl below sea level).
• People make mistakes, but generally, the government officials were trying to help the best they knew how before, during, and after each hurricane.
• We learned how to do it better each time. Louisiana will, too.

After each hurricane hit, new people would move in and the next hurricane would hit and they would start screaming about "slow" response and yelling to go back to their house via washed out roads and the rest of us would look at them and try to explain, usually unsuccessfully. Then they would learn and look at the next batch of newcomers and try to explain to them.

When the next hurricane hits somewhere, the government response won't be instant, electricity won't come back on immediately, and people who haven't been through it before will begin to scream about "slow" response.

As for Katrina, response has been slower before: http://www.charleston.net/stories/default_pf.aspx?newsID=38758

"bob, you should be specific about the stuff you think is stupid, since opinions are all over the board (no pun intended) on this one. It strikes me as amusing, though, that the thing you actually cared enough about to complain specifically was the criticism of Kayne's musical abilities, which is (arguably) the silliest of the arguments on the board."

Sorry, there were sooooooo many stupid comments I didn't know where to begin. (BTW - I didn't really bash JM, at least not the way others have bashed Kanye) I guess I started with the easiest. But I have moved on now.

Merriam,

you're keeping me laughing over here. Although I assume you meant as soon...hitting the sherry hard? You definitely caught me by surprise - you showed the banter was getting to you there at the end.

"to roberts",
And I quote: "when people are treated as if they're from a 3rd world country they act as if they're from a 3rd world country, period." I beg to differ on several fronts. Again, one of the wonders of mankind is that we can respond much better or worse than how we "have reason to". But I'm curious, were you referring to how people were treated just in this disaster or how the whole system is set up?

(boozo the clown...lol. Hey, I like boozo the clown! haha!)

ndelc, I'm digging it.

I'm pretty sure that what Barbara Bush was saying was that a lot of these poor people were stuck in the wards and bayou ghettos of New Orleans, which only stupid fools who have never been to these wards would think were acceptable places for anyone to live. A lot of these folk would never thought they had the opportunity that they have now, a chance to start life over, in a much more hopeful place.

While it is tragic that these folks had to basically lose what little they had to get a second chance, isn't that what usually happens? Don't most people have to lose their crap job before they find their dream job, or lose their boyfriend/girlfriend before they find their real true love?

Opportunity doesn't always just knock. Sometimes it knocks you over.

bob, thanks for the clarification. I've at times been so frustrated by so many comments I didn't know where to start, so lashed out in general also.

I try to avoid doing that anymore though, since it usually doesn't come across well (i.e. doesn't do anyone any good).

Heroin:

You are a fool. Texas is not any more a racist place than anywhere else in the US. Who has opened themselves to over 300,000 of the victims of this disaster?

Not California.

Not New York.

Texas.

Screw you and your self-rightious ignorance. You are the ignorant bigot here.

If you were in Texas, in the shelters as I have been, you'd see the love that this state has shown, welcoming people who have nothing, not just as refugees, but welcoming these people to our state TO STAY.

I personally worked with an association that is sponsoring business fairs, so these people can find permanent jobs and homes so they can begin their lives again here permanently...

While we here in Texas are welcoming our new neighbors, you choose to throw up your prejudice against Texas as fact, and show how ignorant, uncreative, and intolerant you are.

Shame on you.

Re: Hurricanes

Due to global warming, the seas in the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribean are now 1-2º warmer than they were just a few years ago, which helped contribute to more warmer moist air being available for Katrina to suck up, which threrfore helped contribute to its growth from a cat. 2 to a cat 4/5 hurricane.

This is just the start of more savere weather conditions which will affect mainland America for years to come.

If G.W. doesn't do something about Americas massive contribution to global pollution/warming (i.e. sign up to the Kyoto agreement and force big business to cut their output of greenhouse gasses and other pollutants) then America's landmass and its normal everyday Joe Public in the street will face more and more life threatening disasters in the years to come.

Not signing to Kyoto may save big business billions of dollars, but then the American taxpayer will pay out billions in taxes to cover the cost of disaster releaf and rising insurance costs - not to mention the cost of countless hundreds lost in human life.

America! Get off your fat asses and do something!

MDN word: 'distance', as in the gulf between America's attitude to the planet, and, er, the rest of the planets.

Sorry, simple truth hurts.

Kanye West is an idiot. None of the sh*t he said helps anybody.

Look at me, I'm some WAAAY too arrogant dumbass who thinks they know everything.

Please...if he's so damn high on himself, how come I don't hear about HIM helping out?

At least when others say something, they are DOING SOMETHING about it. Sean Penn is a good example, I usually loathe him to no end, but at least he's trying to do something about helping people out down there instead of just blathering and promoting his record.

Kanye West sounded like a high school talent show reject. He's a talentless piece of filth who's only contribution is to turn people against each other when they should be working in unity. It's unthinkable that Apple would give a kb of bandwidth to that piece of trash.

Bartsimpsonhead:

Actually, the models say no such thing re: global warming and hurricanes.

Make no mistake. Global warming is real. Global warming has the potential to be very harmful to the ecosystem in the future. But global warming had nothing to do with this event. I don't know where you got your data/theory, but real meteorological science and modeling just does not support this claim. Neither does historical data, which is even more important in studying catastrophic meteorological events.

Quoting bad science does nothing to help the cause against global warming. It just gives ammunition to certain elements that will point to flawed science and paint all global warming critics as environmental extremists and whackos. Please

I see the word, "talent" thrown around by people who don't seem to value Kanye's viewpoint, as if somehow there's a connection between one's level of musical talent and his poltical leanings.

"Grrr! Kanye West's opinions are in conflict with my own! Naturally, that indicates that his level of musical prowess is far below any artist taking up disk space on my iPod! Man alive, I love me some Toby Keith!"

Kanye West isn't the only person with this opinion; he merely verbalized it for a national audience. It must have come as a complete shock to those of you who shut yourselves off to modern black music.

Modern black music? Bloc Party's lead singer is black, is that modern black music? Oh wait, they're an English band so I guess he really doesn't count as "black". Hmmm, how about Wynton Marsalis' new album. He's black. Is that modern black music? Wait, he never says "Niggaz" so I guess he doesn't count either. You got me Mango, I never listen to modern black music.

Sep 12, 05 - 08:28 pm Comment from: Good Job

I think we are getting off topic here. Back to the fact that the writers of MDN are ignorant enough to believe all hurricanes are the same and the extensive media coverage of this tragedy had to do with people complaining about a lack of ice and cable and not half dead and dying people laying outside the Superdome and on a deserted stretch of highway.

Talk about friggin ignorant.

MDN stick to blindly backing everything Apple does and critizing every other company thats not Apple and doesn't bow down to the almighty power of Jobs. That is all you are good at. Barely.

Actually on second thought, keep your "takes" and just give us the god damn news without your inspid comments. Thanks.

Sep 12, 05 - 08:50 pm Comment from: to fraine

ummm, yes and many of those businesses who hire people hire them in india, of course that's after they skip out on paying taxes by locating off shore, while at the same time getting a tax breaks at the federal or local level, and are now allowed to hire below the minimum wage to rebuild some of the poorest states in the country with no bid contracts.

welfare isn't just for poor folk, working class people get welfare in the form minimum credits on their taxes, or deductions for dependants, or tax deducting the interst on your house, i think you can even tax deduct the amount of sales tax you pay in a year.

welfare isn't just food stamps, or medicaid, medicare, or housing assitance, or social security or any other of the myriad of safety net's that are in place in society.

welfare ultimately is the redistribution of taxes; it's to poor people or corporations. and guess what? the one thing that everyone who benefits from welfare can agree on is that for some unknown reason they all feel like their entitles to their slice of it.

so enjoy your welfare, in whatever form you take it in, cause your entitled to it. just like i'm entitled to an ipod nano.

mw "wouldl" as in what would you do will 2 billion in corporate welfar?

Sep 12, 05 - 09:08 pm Comment from: James

I've got an idea for you "Good Job", if you don't like MDN hit the road and don't come back. MDN is right on the money. The only difference between this hurricane and others is all of the corruption in that city and state. The levees too. But you liberals jackasses blaming everything on Bush is getting boring. You need to stop whining and go in there and make these welfare addicts earn their free room and board. Make them attend some type of educational classes to be eligible. These people have to learn that there is no free ride. Otherwise it only keeps their lazy asses in that gutter that they live in. And the working population pays for them to milk the system. Or is it easier for you liberals to just to keep taxing the working class and throw money at the situation while you sit in your home miles away and feel better about yourselves and rip Republicans. Use that Republican ripping energy and go actually help these people. Get them in class rooms. Change your crappy system to make, force, these people to better themselves.

Getting money back on taxes is not welfare, considering the fact that I PAID those taxes, and am having some of MY money, that I worked for, returned. By your definition, if I buy a candy bar, and pay with a $20 bill, the change would be welfare.

by my definition if you bought an ipod nano and tax deducted the sales that that would be you taking advantage of a form of welfare. the government doesn't have to let you tax deduct your sales tax, just like it doesn't have to provide basic healthcare to children who live below the poverty level, or guarantee the safety of it's citizensl the change you get back from the retailer would be the difference between the cost of the ipod nano and the $400 to $500 you took out of your purse to pay for it; that's called capitalism.

Sep 12, 05 - 10:42 pm Comment from: Mangolian

"Foshizzle Mangolizzle!" Yeah, man. Everyone who listens to rap talks exactly like that.

First of all, there's nothing wrong with Toby Keith. As I said in a previous post, I'm not going to say the stuff he puts out "isn't music" simply because I don't like it. He's just the first one that came to mind when trying to think of an idealogical opposite to Kanye. I respect his personal opinions probably about as much as you respect those of Kanye West.

As for what comprises modern black music, I think you know exactly what I meant. Should I have simply said "hip-hop", and avoided your little rant? Sure, I'll give you Kele from Bloc Party and Wynton Marsalis, but, frankly, they're drops in the bucket in terms of cultural relevance when compared to people like Snoop Dogg, Jay-Z, Diddy, and Kanye West. Debate the artistic merits of their work all you want. But when you see Snoop Dogg hawking AOL and cell phones, it's impossible to deny the degree to which hip-hop has penetrated popular culture. My point in my last post is that Kanye West isn't some lone wacko spouting off an opinion that no one else in America shares. Discontentment with the status quo is a consistent theme in hip-hop. Those of us who are familiar with the music perhaps weren't too surprised to see an opinion like his expressed on national TV.

Also, for some entertainers, there is no difference between the music and the message. Not all entertainment has to be fluff. Many consider Bob Dylan to be a legend for the work he did during the 60s .. to the point where you don't even have to give his first name anymore for people to know who you're talking about. Or look at U2 in the 80s with "Sunday Bloody Sunday" and "New Year's Day" and where that got them. Taking a stand on an issue necessarily means that some will hate you. Some artists look at the potential hit to their sales and keep quiet. Other artists don't give a sh*t and choose to stand for something.

btw ... I LIKE Bloc Party

Having grown up in Florida, I've seen my share of hurricanes. I've heard the "talkingpoints" on how it was the state and local Government's fault but with a little reaserch I found that, with the creation of The Department of Homeland Security, the D.H.S.'s authority overrides state and local govt. particularly when the state and local govt. are so overwhelmed. I'd say the state and local govt. were unquestionably overwhelmed in this case. Normaly it's the national guard who are called in to help but even though ONLY 44% of LA.'s national guard are in Iraq, most of their generators, hummers, and other highwater vehicles are in Iraq with that 44%. So with 56% of their national guard but only 20% of their equipment it was quite a challenge to get them to the scene in a timely manner. THE BOTTOM LINE IS THAT IF WE CAN'T RESPOND TO DISASTERS THAT STRIKE KNOWN VULNERABILITIES WITH ADVANCE WARNING, THEN WHAT CAN WE EXPECT WHEN WE ARE UNABLE TO DECLAIR THE DISASTER DAYS PRIOR TO THE EVENT????

Racism is the scum that unites Americans. No one is whining about a slow response except those who want to cover for Bush-no one cares about a slow response. What people care about is the invasion of New Orleans and the NAZI -like resettlement and relocation of the poor and the blacks from the City of New Orleans. Troops were there BEFORE the hurricane---they had the Superdome surrounded--the only problem is that while the troops brought plenty of ammo, they brought no food or water. Bush was plotting with Rove to blame the Mayor even as their mouthpieces whined about the "blame game". There was no blame game talk when the media blamed either the victim or the Mayor. The Federal government literally refused to even think about giving these people food and water unless the Mayor agreed to relocate his constituents. Recall that the evil Bush talked with his cabinet in the aftermath fo Katrina --Bush said "No idea was too crazy" when he solicited ideas about how New Orleans should be built--He didnt wait and was enthusiastic--THE ONLY THING WAS--HE FORGET ABOUT THE PEOPLE OF NEW ORLEANS. Bush was eager to re build the city without the people who then called New Orleans their home. Soon Barb Bush would marvel at how happy the evacuees seemed to be in Houston. Barb promised to rebuild Trent Lott's mansion. SHAME APPLE--SHAME FOR SQUELCHING THE JUSTIFIED CRITICISM OF BUSH AND AMERICA--SHAME FOR NOT HELPING THE PEOPLE OF NEW ORLEANS.

Here's a question: in a city that is over 60% black with one of the largest poverty level populations in the nation, what color faces did you expect to see on tv? Everyone watched the people line up outside the super dome. NEWS FLASH: Black people went in and, get this, BLACK people came out! What the...how'd they do that?

How come black people aren't calling for the mayors resignation? Or the governors resignation? How are those black people going to feel when they find out that the train company offered the city to take HUNDREDS of people north to high ground and the city refused, so the trains left EMPTY. How about all those buses that sat empty? What color was the guy who made those decisions? Black.

And another thing, I haven't been called whitie since 1987. It still makes me laugh. I also like cracker ass cracker.

"NEWS FLASH: Anyone, of any color, stealing televisions is, by definition, a "looter". But thanks for polarizing the viewing audience Kanye, keep those donations rolling in."

For what it's worth, I believe West was referring to the fact that the AP ran two photos the same day, one showing a black person with food stolen from a store, the other showing a white person with food stolen from a store. The photo of the black person was labeled "looter," whereas the photo of the white person was labeled something like a person "looking for food."

To me, looking on from outside the US, it comes over as censorship: A world famous musician (who's criticism of the Bush govt response to Katrina at thie event) has also been heavily reported outside of the US just happens to be removed from the stream.
Oh, and a black artist, when the world saw that it was primarily black Americans left in the remnants of New Orleans.
To a non US person maybe a perception of racism sneaks in there too....

Hmmm ...

"All Falls Down" from The College Dropout

It seems we living the american dream/ But the people highest up got the lowest self esteem/ The prettiest people do the ugliest things/ For the road to riches and diamond rings /We shine because they hate us, floss cause they degrade us / We trying to buy back our 40 acres / And for that paper, look how low we'll stoop / Even if you in a Benz, you still a ni**a in a coupe

"Never Let You Down" from The College Dropout

I get down for my grandfather who took my momma /Made her sit in that seat where white folks aint wanna us to eat / At the tender age of 6 she was arrested for the sittings./ And with that in my blood,I was born to be different / Now ni**as can't make it to ballots to choose leadership / But we can make it to Jacobs and to the dealership

"Diamonds From Sierra Leone" from Late Registration

Though it's thousands of miles away/ Sierra Leone connect to what we go through today / Over here it's a drug trade,we die from drugs /
Over there, they die from what we buy from drugs / The diamonds, the chains, the bracelets the charms's/ I thought my jesus piece was so harmless / Till I seen a picture of a shorty armless

... I see quite a bit of substance in those lyrics, for a dude caught up in the shallow pursuit of ho'z and ice.

I would MUCH rather have seen YoYo Ma perform. I hope someone gave him a good set of earphones that blanked out all noise. Personally that's when I turned off the presentation viewed on streaming QT.

D, didn't know that. Thanks for the clarification - that's quite a bit different than labelling a picture of someone taking a TV looting (which is what I thought he was referring to).

Dave Challender, you did see the multiple comments explaining that this is a record label thing, right? That U2 was removed last year from the stream?

Mangolian, agreed, I do see some depth to those lyrics. Don't think I'll start listening to him, but that's b/c I couldn't stand all the profanity. It's needless and degrading in my opinion (yes, I know I'm way out of the norm for hip-hop here).

You're all d****, lol at you. Your rant is the most hypocritical drivel on here yet! Talk about us being opinionated and close-minded?! Too Funny! rofl

For what it's worth, I heard a report from an embedded reporter this morning, and as he talked about the Army unit he was with I was filled with appreciation again for their great service and love for their fellow man. He went with a squad of 60 on rescue missions, though he is normally a business reporter.

Lisa,

racism doesn't EVER unite ANYTHING. Even those it appears to unite, this group against that, is only a temporary appearance. The truth always emerges: racism is a form of hate, and hate always divides.

foshizille,

I understand that black america still today always wonders if there is racism behind how they're being treated, whether or not there is racism it is a fear that they have to deal with and live with. That doesn't mean things aren't changing or getting better. Making false or silly accusations of racisms doesn't help, except perhaps it does make things more equal in one way. Here's how, from my own experience:
I'm white, but I never paid much attention to color. I had friends of different color in H.S., but I couldn't tell you that without thinking about it, and trying to remember what color each person was. I was raised "colorblind", and I knew when someone was different culturally than me (almost always), but that was just normal. When I got in the Navy, I was shocked and disturbed to find that there is still active racism in this country. I also encountered a lot of "reverse racism", where if you're white you'll get accused of being racist anytime you do something certain black people didn't like. I learned to be start paying attention to people's color, so that if someone is black and I don't know them, they may be thinking I'm a racist, and I have to be supercareful to stay away from that. It's not the same as what black america lives with (the fear of racism against them personally), but I think it's close.

Anyways, all that to point out that your post isn't helping your people, and isn't helping this country. Many of the younger people in this country grew up without much, if any, racism. Let's not beat it back into them, but help them eliminate from the future, please!

Re:step

I saw the comments about record label casuing it to be pulled - however as to accuracy of those comments when lots of people post with spoofed email addresses....

Thats why I used phrase "To me, looking on from outside the US, it comes over as..." - describing how it APPEARS to non US person who may not be privy to all details of US coverage of this topic...

If things were pulled because apple yet again rolled over for record labels*, then they should proclaim this loud and clear - let people know content is missing due to the record label.
If the reason is NOT made clear then a lot of people will naturally make assumptions about ulterior motives for the content being pulled: Your avearge person will not spend ages investigating why it is missing.

* Treat ishuffle users as criminals to keep record labels happy. Will not let me sync my shuffle to more than 1 PC without trashing all the tracks on it in case I am illicitly transferring MP3s, which irritates me when all my MP3s are rips of my personal CDs as I never download music from the web. Massive inconvenience for the majority of lawful users just to inconvenience a few illicit users, who will just use other means to transfer music or find some software to "crack" access to the shuffle.

" "Hurricane Katrina,
Your Tax Cuts at Work !!!"

$50 to anyone who can make sense out of that statement. "

YEEEES, you would need at least two neurons in that right wing nut cluster of yours to fathom my statement. That poor lone neuron is WAY too occupied worrying about " MY money" this and "MY money" that, to even understand that while your Ri*** Wi** Fa***** Du** Fu** buddies keep cutting taxes like you always clamor for, the next time it just rains anywhere in the U.S. you and your ilk will thankfully ALL drown. Or burn or slip into the sea or whatever event your NOT prepared for, of course depending WHERE your tax cuts are best not being helpful. Ah, except for the rich egotists and greedy hoarders like yourself, your police-forces, military industrial complex, homeland insecurity department, jails, and concentration camps will be richly funded, .....sooooorrrrry.

What's the use ?
