Apple Computer brand has regained much of its early appeal
Saturday, October 23, 2004 - 03:43 PM EDT

"Not so long ago, to claim Apple as a choice computer solution was to open the doors wide open to mockery and derision. Macs, the thinking went, may be nice to look at but they do not a serious computer make. That was then and this is now: today, the brand has successfully developed into a serious, if still small, contender in the world of enterprise computing. Even more importantly, the Apple brand has regained much of its early appeal, when its founders claimed the Mac to be 'the computer for the rest of us,'" Rania Adwan reports for Strategiy.com.

"In the beginning, flaws in the company's first strategy quickly became apparent. 'Apple became arrogant and didn’t treat its customers well,' says Don Norman, the company’s design guru in the early years who now works for Microsoft. 'It rewarded creativity, which meant it brought out some brilliant products, but badly. And one point where Apple really shot itself in the foot was to come up with the message that the Macintosh was 'the computer for the rest of us' – not for you dull businesspeople. So Microsoft and the IBM-style PC, not surprisingly, sold very successfully into the business market,'" Adwan reports.

"Hard questions remain for Apple... and it's not clear that focused attention and dedication will be enough to make the company a contender in a PC market dominated by the likes of HP, Dell, IBM and Sony. Instead, the success of the iPod and Pixar – the animated film division founded by Steve Jobs that has produced such instant classics as Toy Story and Shrek – suggests that Apple may one day quit the mainstream PC market altogether and focus on entertainment."

[MacDailyNews Note: Pixar is a separate company, not a division of Apple, and is not in any way related to Apple Computer, Inc. Steve Jobs is CEO of both independent companies.]

It's not worth it to email the writer of that article. I think the public is aware of the Apple story by now.

AHHHH Pixar didnt do shrek..Dreamworks did...!!!!

Why does MDN bother to give this article the publicity it clearly seeks - when the author is so clearly an ignoramus.

Editor - please apply some control. Not every article with the words, Jobs, Apple or Mac in them deserve circulation to the Mac community.

Oct 23, 04 - 06:40 pm Comment from: Joe McConnell

Uh, Macs did used to be mocked (and still are). Apple did take advantage of customers with renamed models that quickly became obsolete. Apple did choose not to pursue business sales. And now, with the ipod and various identifiable entertainment ventures, as well as the fastest pc's available, it is poised for a dramatic improvement in computer market share. It won't get it, as it does not care as evidenced by the new imac, which as usual meets Steve's needs nicely, and the rest of us only if we think like Steve.

MDN usually provokes a higher class of name callers than this. At least moron and ignoramus were spelled correctly this time.

Oct 23, 04 - 07:07 pm Comment from: Jimbo von Winskinheimer

Well, Joe's back. Same ol' slop, Joe. Please don't claim to speak for "us" when you deride the new iMac. It happens to be a very nice computer. You want to compare it to the run o' the mill Dell or HP or Sony - go ahead, give it your best shot. What don't you like about it Joe? Is it the fact that it is beautiful? Is it the fact that it has a G5? Maybe that it runs Mac OS X? How about that you don't need special popup blockers or virus scanners or spyware blockers? Hmm, what else don't you like about it?

Joe, please don't pretend to be anything other than a PC bitch, because that's what you are.

Oct 23, 04 - 07:09 pm Comment from: Steve Jobs

Up yours, McConnell.

I'd take a Mac over a Dull any day of the week. I come across the choice every day and I always take the Mac.

Oct 23, 04 - 07:28 pm Comment from: Bradford

joe wants a headless imac. why not just say that joe instead of firing everyone up?

Oct 23, 04 - 07:35 pm Comment from: Neil2112

Unlike Micrs**t, Apple IS in the entertainment industry. My iMac is very entertaining. My brother-in-law's Sony is not. It's just a computer, with no soul and no imagination.

Oct 23, 04 - 07:38 pm Comment from: mike

MS makes revs of about 40B a year.. Apple..12B.. i honestly thought it was like a factor of 10... it aint.

Oh.. and Dell recently was a 30B company..trying to become a 60B company..

Oct 23, 04 - 07:39 pm Comment from: Neil2112

Did I say Micros**t?
I try to every time, and when I see someone else using it I'll be really really happy as it was my idea.

It's sad when an author throws together a pile unchecked assertions like these (Pixar being a division of Apple, and Shrek being a Pixar film, for example), but even worse when there's apparently no editorial staff checking such very obvious and easily verifiable statements. But then, I've never heard of "Strategiy.com". Sounds Turkish or something.

The guy McConnell tries to make an election issue. Talking about the Arab region puts Apple as a anti- patriotic company. He is a bad bad rightwing reporter.

Oct 23, 04 - 07:50 pm Comment from: NightOwl

Spoken like a true brainwashed servant of the Redmond devil himself.

She probablly wants the chance to hump Bill Gates leg too.

They are scared, Apple stock has been rocketing, we have a better OS, it's more secure, the iPod is a hit. Apple is opening stores all over and selling Mac's like crazy.

Apple is getting taken seriously by AT&T;and other corporations, CherryOS is going to give PC users a taste of Mac OS X and they may like what they see and just say "fuck it" I'm buying a Mac.

The factual error about Pixar, etc. aside, if Apple had chosen to also pursue the business market, it would would be larger, and therefore have the resources and clout to be better "for the rest of us."

Oct 23, 04 - 10:40 pm Comment from: mike

kenh.. haven't used Windows in a while have you?

Oct 23, 04 - 11:39 pm Comment from: kenh

"kenh.. haven't used Windows in a while have you?"

Used OSX, Unix and Windows within the last 24 hours, Windows and Unix not by choice.

What is your point?

Oct 24, 04 - 05:49 am Comment from: John

Interesting that when talking about Apples market share, analysts always include the business market, when as pointed out Apple never competed in that segment of the market, and is only now starting to do so with its Xserve, etc.

"if Apple had chosen to also pursue the business market, it would would be larger, and therefore have the resources and clout to be better "for the rest of us."

Obviously, I was referring to the company that DID pursue the business market...

Windows.. and the DOS world that Mac was lashing out against is NOT made for the rest of us.. it's not made for "us" at all.. it's made for developers.. MS doesn't give a rat's ass about it's customers

" Windows.. and the DOS world that Mac was lashing out against is NOT made for the rest of us.. it's not made for "us" at all.. it's made for developers.. MS doesn't give a rat's ass about it's customer"

I agree with that.

My point is that if Apple had chosen to pursue the business market , MS and Windows might very well have been a distant and unpleasant memory.

I have used computers in business for nearly 30 years now, and I remember how it was in the early days. I was lucky enough to have a sales rep "switch" me in 1988. She took about 20 minutes to explain it, and it made sense.

She was an employee of a local independent reseller who sold both "the dark side" and Apple.

But most businesses were never seriously presented with the option. Most never knew it existed, and still don't.

Should they be looking for an option? Yes, and they are now. But it is not because Apple is courting them seriously. The product makes it easier now, but there still is no serious effort of any size to market to business. Great product is the right direction, but people have to be made aware of it.

Entertainment stuff is ok, more power to them, but I don't have the time or interest in entertainment products. Real life is more fun.

Can you imagine the cost savings in business that could be passed on if Macs were being used in greater numbers? Like 90% market share type numbers?

Any kind of waste, in the long haul, benefits no one, so let the Windows IT guys get real jobs.

Pixar didn't make Shrek, Dreamworks Pictures did! Be careful who you give credits to!

Joe,

Busy yesterday with my new iPod, but I always like to make time for my friends here at MDN.

I've suggested this before Joe, you're never going to convince us MDNers to buy you that new iMac that you want, with that attitude!

wink

Once again, another PC type who didn't do his homework.

Oct 24, 04 - 10:04 pm Comment from: mike

kehn.. eerily, Bill Gates when he was a young scamp urged other companies (OS makers) to agree to a standard.. what he called a Natural Monopoly..

For developers it's very convenient having a Natural Monopoly (duh)..

Unfortunately, MS only has a 'Natural Monopoly' in the overall market.. including Business Sales (the bank terminal argument)

They sure dont have a monopoly on the home PC's.. or else why would companies like id make games for the Mac...

the Mac, contrary to popular belief, typically gets game ports, eventually, of successful games.. i've got WC3 and Civ3.. i'm in heaven!

Apple has always led the way in computer technology. They are simply the best inside and out. The folks at apple go above and beyond the average computer every single year. Now they have the best music player on the market and the largest online music store on the internet. The apple stores that are popping up everywhere are starting to payoff as well. Now PC users are given a chance to think different like the rest of the mac community. So what if they don't design based on the bussiness market. They simply set out to build the best computer on the market, and did. Apple didn't set out to monopolize the bussiness market. Although the buisness market is starting to come around. The G4 tower I bought in 2000 still works great and smokes any Dell, Gateway, IBM, etc... on the market today. I haven't had any problems with hardware or any viruses in 4 years! Best of all I haven't HAD to upgrade to a new computer in all that time. When I'm forced to work on a PC it is such a drag. It seems like I'm working on a toy computer. The OS looks like something fisher-price designed and I feel like it is going to crap out at any minute. Everyone wants to bring up the fact that apple doesn't have enough share of the business market. So what, Apple has shown you don't have to. Just look at their stock price today...

Oct 25, 04 - 04:48 pm Comment from: Joe McConnell

gee whiz, I gotta check in more often.

My points were that the author of the article didn't misstate anything (other than the pixar gaff, I guess). All that other stuff is true, I think, and, mostly, water under the bridge.

And that, maybe we all share different takes on the phrase "contender in the pc market" but to me it means selling more boxes, % wise, than before. I think the new imac will fall flat on its face in that regard. Sales figures may make me wrong, but I doubt it. It's a nice design and the idea of a wall mount is just right for an upscale home.......but that is not where volume demographics matter.

So Bradford, I don't think it is my fault, it is the mindset of the mass here who are still so insecure about their choice. I actually don't think the broad community of Mac owners is well represented here, free forums being what they are.

Jimbo, good name calling! Way to elevate!
