Apple Computer brand has regained much of its early appeal
Saturday, October 23, 2004 - 03:43 PM EDT"Not so long ago, to claim Apple as a choice computer solution was to open the doors wide open to mockery and derision. Macs, the thinking went, may be nice to look at but they do not a serious computer make. That was then and this is now: today, the brand has successfully developed into a serious, if still small, contender in the world of enterprise computing. Even more importantly, the Apple brand has regained much of its early appeal, when its founders claimed the Mac to be 'the computer for the rest of us,'" Rania Adwan reports for Strategiy.com.
"In the beginning, flaws in the company's first strategy quickly became apparent. 'Apple became arrogant and didn’t treat its customers well,' says Don Norman, the company’s design guru in the early years who now works for Microsoft. 'It rewarded creativity, which meant it brought out some brilliant products, but badly. And one point where Apple really shot itself in the foot was to come up with the message that the Macintosh was 'the computer for the rest of us' – not for you dull businesspeople. So Microsoft and the IBM-style PC, not surprisingly, sold very successfully into the business market,'" Adwan reports.
"Hard questions remain for Apple... and it's not clear that focused attention and dedication will be enough to make the company a contender in a PC market dominated by the likes of HP, Dell, IBM and Sony. Instead, the success of the iPod and Pixar – the animated film division founded by Steve Jobs that has produced such instant classics as Toy Story and Shrek – suggests that Apple may one day quit the mainstream PC market altogether and focus on entertainment."
[MacDailyNews Note: Pixar is a separate company, not a division of Apple, and is not in any way related to Apple Computer, Inc. Steve Jobs is CEO of both independent companies.]
