Apple and Warner Bros. add Friends, Babyon 5, MADtv, Flintstones, Jetsons, Aquaman to iTunes Store
Tuesday, July 25, 2006 - 09:26 AM EDT

Apple and Warner Bros. Television have added six new programs to Apple's iTunes Store's "TV Shows" section:

(click TV show name below for more info via iTunes)

Friends: Season 1 (24 episodes)
Aquaman: Pilot program
Babylon 5: Season 1 (23 episodes)
The Flintstones: Season 1: (28 episodes)
The Jetsons: Season 1: (24 episodes)
The Best of MADtv: (best of seasons 8-10, in parts)

From the press release:
Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group and Apple today announced that classic hit programming from Warner Bros.' vast television library is now available for purchase and download on the iTunes Music Store. The new content features favorites such as the hugely popular sitcom "Friends," sci-fi epic "Babylon 5" and some of the most popular sketches from "MADtv," as well as animated classics including "The Jetsons" and "The Flintstones." iTunes offers over 150 TV shows for $1.99 per episode for viewing on a computer or iPod.

Also available is the never-before-seen pilot episode of "Aquaman" -- a grounded, contemporary reinterpretation of DC Comics' Aquaman mythology from the acclaimed writing/producing team of Alfred Gough and Miles Millar ("Smallville").

"Making our television content available to iTunes consumers is an important step in our digital distribution strategy," said Simon Kenny, president, Warner Bros. Digital Distribution. "This deal fits perfectly with our philosophy of providing consumers with access to our world-class entertainment properties across the widest selection of platforms and devices available."

"We're thrilled to add hit programming from Warner Bros. as we continue to grow our video catalog with the best current and classic television programming," said Eddy Cue, Apple's vice president of iTunes. "iTunes is the world's most popular online video store with over 35 million videos sold."

Babylon 5... RULES!!!!

Jul 25, 06 - 09:50 am Comment from: Canned Spam

Well it's about time Warner Bros. got their head outta their @ss.

As many people might not know, the guy who owns the company is a idiot, bad mouthed Apple and wants variable prices on iTMS.

Steve Jobs must have done a good job smoothing over this prick, broffmann or something is his last name.

NOW GIVE ME MY LOST AND SOUTH PARK DAMMIT!!!

This is great news and all, but what about us worldwide iTunes users? We want to download movies too!

Jul 25, 06 - 09:54 am Comment from: Artisticulated

There was a live action Aquaman series?!?!?!?!!?

To the google cave!

Jul 25, 06 - 10:09 am Comment from: Alex

Canned Spam: Many people might not know that because it's not true. Edgar Bronfman Jr only heads up Warner Music. He has nothing to do with the TV arm of the company.

Jul 25, 06 - 10:20 am Comment from: CyberGreg

I'll second the Babylon 5 RULES! The BEST scifi series, ever. If I had an iPod video I would so buy them wink

Jul 25, 06 - 10:22 am Comment from: Jeff

I just saw The Flinstones and The Jetsons at Sam's Club over the weekend. The DVD's were $3 cheaper than iTunes. What a joke.

Errr, ummm, uh...

Hey! Big Brother!
tongue wink

Canned Spam, I think you may have confused Time Warner and Warner Music. Bronfman of Warner Music is the heretic who committed blasphemy against His Steveness. But Warner Music doesn't do TV.

Jul 25, 06 - 10:52 am Comment from: Hum....

The only problem with these B5 Epsodes is the orginal format was 16:9.

Else Third B5 Rules!

Jul 25, 06 - 11:05 am Comment from: grok

Netflix + Handbrake + CPU cycles = B5 at whatever resolution you prefer.

Jul 25, 06 - 11:23 am Comment from: stab the Man (the surreal one)

Whachya gonna do, big brother wink ?

I also do weddings. grin

Aquaman?

All he does is talk to fish.

Al Gore wanted Aquaman, didn't he?

Jul 25, 06 - 12:03 pm Comment from: dennis

Hey Jeff, how much to buy just one episode from that set of Flintstones DVDs at Sam's?

Jul 25, 06 - 12:04 pm Comment from: DLMeyer

This is good news for Apple, I guess, but I think I've seen all the episodes of B5 - many twice - and too much of the rest (and that just by surfing past them) so there isn't much here for me.

Yeah ... B5 changed the industry almost as much as Star Trek TOS did way-back-when. B5 brought "story arc" to episodic tv and proved that serious CG animation was possible on modest-budget tv - begone, models run on wires.

Great News... just not for us UK people.
Are we ever gonna get any TV shows over here?

The problem with many TV shows here is, they sometimes do not get repeated (doesn't count for lost, which is on about 5 times per episode).

So if the shows have a continuing plot and you miss an episode you can either:
• Stop watching the series
• Try to fill the plotholes and guess what's happened
• Wait for the DVD to come out - especially great if you only missed 2 - 3 episodes
• Try to ...erm... find a torrent file

I am sure there would be a massive audience in the UK that would buy the occasional episode.

Bring it on!

re: The Batman

Anything like Netflix in the UK? Excuse my ignorance, just curious...

Jul 25, 06 - 01:25 pm Comment from: gorsh

cool - I missed the whole B5 thing (old guy). I loved TOS, hated TNG with a white-hot hate, but really dug Farscape. Maybe I'll give B5 a try. Everyone seems to have loved it. Gotta ♥ iTunes.

Very interesting choices they made. Not fully sure I can understand why WB chose "these" shows. Is there a reason that "Smallville" say wasn't added? And who made the decision to include The jetsons/flinstones. Not saying they aren't good, but to me it seems like WB studios would have had bigger hits from a "downloading" audience. I mean, really, who is going to put Flinstones on their iPod?

BTW, FOX needs to upload Family Guy!

Jul 25, 06 - 03:25 pm Comment from: jay

I have all 5 seasons of B5 on DVD, plus all of the films. As good as it was (and still is), Battlestar Gallactica (the NEW one) gives it a good run for the money.

Jul 26, 06 - 01:13 pm Comment from: ringo

what is it with Apple that makes them constantly deliver all this new stuff in the U.S only? Why is it so damn difficult to think about the money they can make in Asia and Europe with these services? Really, I just don't get it.
