Apple about to resurrect its Switch campaign?  Are the ‘OS wars’ really over?
Monday, May 09, 2005 - 01:08 PM EST

"With the release of its latest Mac operating system, Tiger, Apple is upping the ante in its bid to win over Windows users - and to convert proud iPod owners into Mac desktop owners," Seb Janacek writes for Silicon.com. "If OS X finally came of age with Panther (version 10.3), then Tiger feels like an embellished and polished upgrade to a finished product."

Janacek writes, "In fact, Apple is so pleased with its new big cat, it seems, there are signs afoot that it may be about to resurrect its Switch campaign. The original campaign floundered despite a high-profile launch. The campaign used 'real life' testimonies from ordinary people who had switched from PC to Mac, though they seemed alternately too cool, geeky or stoned to be believed or trusted on matters of personal computing."

"A note on the Apple website currently reads: 'Got an iPod, then bought a Mac? Did you love your iPod so much that you decided to buy a Mac? How did your Mac change the rest of your life? ... We want your personal story of your move to Mac - what you do with it and how it's made your life all around better.' The signs of a follow-up campaign are clear. However, this time the company will be able to take advantage of the much-vaunted iPod 'halo effect' that journalists and analysts love to harp on about," Janacek writes.

"It's a tangible effect now. According to its second quarter results, Apple shipped 1.07 million Macs - a 43 per cent increase on the same period a year ago. This rise was no doubt boosted by sales of well over five million iPods in the same three-month period - a 558 per cent increase on 2004," Janacek writes. "Apple is clearly gearing up a campaign to beckon a few disillusioned Windows users into its open arms before Microsoft's own next-generation operating system, Longhorn, comes to town next year."

"There's no realistic anticipation that Apple will regain huge tracts of market share. The OS wars are long over; Microsoft won,' Janacek writes. "However, the company could convince a few people outside the Apple community to consider making the leap when it launches its follow-up 'iPod to Mac' Switch campaign. Maybe not the droves that Apple might like but certainly enough to consolidate the fortunes of the company. And thanks to the strength and momentum of iPod sales, the campaign will have the added oomph and reach it lacked last time. Let's just hope its 'real life' testimonies come from advocates who appear a little more down-to-earth this time, or at least less stoned."

MacDailyNews Take: Microsoft may have won a very convincing battle, but we never say never. The war isn't over until there's a surrender. Apple's still here and the Mac platform is growing and advancing, not shrinking and retreating. As long as Apple makes Macs, as Yogi said, "It ain't over 'til it's over." PCs are turned over every few years; all it would take is for the average user to choose a Mac for their next computer and things would quickly change drastically. With Windows in disarray and Longhorn looking more like Stillborn, right now is Apple's best time to strike and strike hard. Will Jobs do it?

iWork is drifting aimlessly, isn't it?

This "war" was reignited already back in January when Apple released the Mac mini. And all of the "experts" said that was something that Jobs would never do too, yet it happened. Now with the iPod, Mac mini and Tiger to fight back with, this is the perfect time for Apple to strike M$...

Apple has been soliciting testimonials on its website for many months now. If this really was evidence of an imminent new Switcher campaign, it surely would have happened by now.

There are no wars as far as I am concern. OSX is for Macs and "Swindle XP" is for Pee Cees. They are two totally different market segments. If both OSs ran on the same hardware and are trying to aim at the same market, there would wars, otherwise, the only wars out there are Star Wars.

Frankly, as long as Apple continues to make great, innovative hardware and software that I can buy and use I don't really give a rats a** what the other 95% of computer users suffer along with. And, for the record, I live uncomfortably close to Redmond.

Armageddon is upon us! REPENT! THE END IS NIGH!

May 09, 05 - 02:27 pm Comment from: Neil

Apple cetainly need to advertise Tiger:

1. Get the geeks who want a cool new toy.

2. Get the parents who want a low maintanance computer for their home and kids.

3. Get the iPodders who like the style of Apple.

4. Recapture a lot of the old OS 9 users who are still plodding along with their old iMacs.

I'm sure there's some other group that could do with a mac.

As for business - that will take longer to convince - the cost of new hardware is a bitter pill to swallow.

My ad:

"What kind of music player do you use? Apple's iPod? Why do you use it? Because it is the best player around. It's the easiest to use. It is refined. It is a quality piece of work. So, you like the experience that you get from using your iPod, right? Don't you wish you could get that great experience when using your computer? You can! You can use the best computer around; the easiest to use; the most refined; a quality piece of work. Guess what - it's from the same company that brought you the iPod. Apple."

Jimbo, the Windows version of your ad:
"What kind of music player do you use? Apple's iPod? Why do you use it? Because it is the best player around. It's the easiest to use. It is refined. It is a quality piece of work. So, you like the experience that you get from using your iPod, right? Guess what - it works great on your Windows PC. That´s why HP, maker of Windows computers, sells an Apple licensed, HP iPod"

Not sure about that, Mike, I think it's just getting started.

Quite a precarious situation Apple is in in trying create a competitor to MS Office while absolutely depending on continued support from MS for Office for Mac.

Sure, it would look bad for MS to suddenly drop Office for Mac, but how hard would it be to let it wither on the vine? Allow subtle, then not so subtle incompatibilies to arise?

I suspect iWork will obviously continue to add applications and features, but do so in a roundabout way. Taking a different tack, not a full frontal assault.

It was clear depending on IE was a dead end, even on Windows, so they developed Safari.

But I hate to say it, if full MS Office compatibility is not a given, in the short term, we're in trouble.

As a former Linux user, I was pretty pleased with OpenOffice.org. But I'm beginning to lose faith. I certainly don't see it as leading the way, so I hope Apple has a compelling strategy up their sleaves for eliminating the Office dependency.

An alternative Switch campaign...

"See, I musta spent several thousand on my PC hardward - yea I got a good set up. But Windows, boy it's becoming a pain. Well, I was browsing around in my local PC super store the other week and I passed by the 'OS X for Intel' stand. I thought who's gonna buy that Apple stuff - it's a toy isn't it? It's some weird foreign land I ain't going near. Then I thought, hey, I wonder what everyone's raving about... and it's only $129... what if I gave it a shot? Of course I'd NEVER sell up my precious PC kit (how much would I get for it now $100?), but I can dip into this Tiger thing, surf the web, write some emails and check out all the media stuff and I still got Windows for all the important things I need.

6 MONTHS LATER:
Awww, y'know how it goes. I never really launch into Windows these days. See, what with all the virus-free web surfing and the really cool features in Tiger for Intel, I found I was spending more and more time there. Then I heard I could cross-grade my Office software for next-to-nothing and I thought heck why not? It's kind weird to go back into all that clunky XP stuff now. And you know what? I heard OS X works even better on a Mac! See, I got NO REASON to buy an Intel box next time I upgrade... I'm saving up already.

Apple can win the war if they win the next two battles: games and the media center. The Media-center should not be too difficult, for games Apple needs to deliver a great effort.

I don't get it. Microshaft has missed every deadline with Longhorn, so why does the press accept their release date of late next year, no questions asked?

May 09, 05 - 06:24 pm Comment from: mike, on Panther

game on? how about siding with sony?

i'll trade you a virus proof OS for PS3 compatibility.. wink

Get a USB plug for the wireless controllers.. etc..Suddenly the Mac mini is plugging into gaming.. and of course, Sony gets kickbacks
