Analyst: More storage for iPod shuffle, color screen iPod mini, but no ‘iPod video’ this year
Thursday, August 04, 2005 - 11:42 AM EDT

"A higher capacity iPod shuffle and color screen iPod mini are both likely to be introduced this year, though a video iPod isn’t expected before the end of 2005, according to one Wall Street analyst. In a research note obtained by iLounge, Piper Jaffray senior analyst Gene Munster offered an overview of potential new Apple products, including his speculation on the future iPod line," Larry Angell reports for iLounge.

Munster's note stated in part, "While speculation regarding the launch of a video iPod within the next 2-3 quarters is growing, we do not expect a video iPod within the next 12 months. Based on comments from the company regarding the portable media center market and the current lack of significant consumer interest for feature film downloading, we believe Apple will wait at least 12 months—until the market is ready for such a product."

video blogging could change that... as well as music videos... remember those star wars shorts on the cartoon network... similar stuff could be a good reason for apple to jump on this... and those BMW movies... 12 months seems a long time to wait for something like this... and hey, what about movie trailers?

The market is ready to transport video, download video podcasts, music videos, news clips, highlights, picture diagrams, etc....

The video iPod is going to take time b/c Apple has to get the content in order.

Frankly I can't imagine ever needing a vPod. Unless I got a HD camcorder and started making my own movies. (not likely to happen)

Again, this is a dicey issue. It's really hard to say that there would be mainstream appeal for such a device since you cannot use it while driving, jogging, walking or exercising like you can with an iPod (music).

Why would the iPod mini go color? Isn't that a great product differentiator?

Aug 04, 05 - 01:38 pm Comment from: yes

The iPod Mini isn't about being different than the full size, its about charging a premium for compact size (cost per gig). Premium products sell better when they have premium features. Its going to happen, just a question of when.

A more interesting question to me is what happens when solid state storage outperfoms hard drives and the mini/shuffle difference becomes just the screen. I for one would pay a premium for a solid state & color mini. All the lovelyness and control, PLUS its more durable.

here is a concept the ipods with color screens are already video ready. Apple puts out a new ipod update and now you can watch the video's that you bought with the special edition albums. It's not crazy when you think that the picture slide show is already a quicktime movie.

Apple will make the market ready for the product...

If they build it, we will come...

grin Apple has the ability to create the vPod. They have many products designed and ready for release. Why or they waiting? Because like Gene Munster said- "current lack of significant consumer interest for feature film downloading, we believe Apple will wait at least 12 months—until the market is ready for such a product."

Bottom line: How many times does Apple innovate only to be copied? Would you show the cards in your hand before the last draw? NO! Patience is a virtual in this case. At the right time with all the piece's in place you will see Apple shine.

the fact that the mini is B&W;attests to its popularity... Apple will milk its customers until they stop giving up their hard earned milk. Then they'll feed the customers higher quality feed (That's already available) just when they're begging for better stuff.

Upgrade path

Note to Apple: Just keep laying those tracks. This train will ultimately leave the station. The video train may not look anything we know now, but people love video content and I have more confidence in Apple to provide a consumer friendly solution than any other player currently in the field.

What the world really needs is a holoPOD. the next generation ipod will holographicly generate your surrounding area to the file you choose. Want to go to a rock concert? pick your favorite rock band track. Want to save the future? pick your favorite Ahnold si fi flick, and bam you are in a total holographic environment thanks to the holoPOD from apple. fully compatible with OSX!!! woooo.

I believe this is a good example of "if they build it they will come".

If Apple (or anybody else for that matter) introduces an iPod Video (or equivalent), a ton of people will jump on the content-creation bandwagon. As "CDR" mentioned earlier, anything from "video blogging...as well as music videos...those star wars shorts on the cartoon network...and those BMW movies...".

Just look at how podcasting just exploded after Apple embraced it in the new iTunes.

I think the big selling point of the video iPod will be hooking it up to a TV to watch videos on a a full size monitor.

Got an iMovie to show someone. Don't make them huddle around the 4 inch screen... instead grab a video cable and hook it up to your TV or computer monitor.

Podzilla (http://www.ipodlinux.org) can already play b/w video on a G3 iPod

Aug 04, 05 - 08:03 pm Comment from: luke

I think that G4, G1 mini, and photo iPods may be able to also but it's unsupported.

Aug 04, 05 - 08:07 pm Comment from: luke

Oh, and I've seen pictures of 8- and 10GB 1 inch HDDs with implications that they would be seen in minis soon. And isn't Apple buying a lot of 1.67 inch color displays?
