Analyst: Best Buy to stock Apple Mac mini, Tiger likely due by end of April

“Apple Computer, Inc. will soon begin selling its low-cost Mac mini computers through the nation’s largest consumer electronics chain, Merrill Lynch said on Monday,” Kasper Jade and Katie Marsal report for AppleInsider. “In a research note released to clients, analyst Steve Milunovich said, ‘It appears that Best Buy is near ready to sell the Mac Mini. […] Last week one Best Buy showed us Mac mini accessories; Mac minis are coming later.'”

Jade and Marsal report, “The analyst speculates that Apple may have delayed the Best Buy roll-out until Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger could be pre-loaded on each of the minis that will be sold through the retailer. ‘Buyers would not be pleased if they had to plunk down an extra $129 after their $499 Mac mini purchase,’ Milunovich said. He added that Tiger is close to shipping and will likely arrive by the end of April and in time to benefit Apple’s third quarter earnings. Merrill Lynch believes the presence of Mac mini at Best Buy, along with the iPod, will help provide evidence of the halo effect — positive experiences with their iPods turning into new Mac sales. ‘Although we see plenty of anecdotal evidence of Mac sales benefiting from iPod success, the numbers will tell the tale,’ said Milunovich, who expects to see a consistent 15-20% year-over-year Mac revenue growth.”

  1. EU bans sale of Apple Macs

    http://www.digitmag.co.uk/news/index.cfm?NewsID=4799

Directive EU01042005, which was passed during a late-night session in Brussels, will be adopted by all member countries on January 1, 2006, and prohibits the “sale, use, resale, leasing, and hire” of Apple Macs due to their lack of full compatibility with Windows computers, and the fact that no-one in the EU parliment can get a decent expenses package to wwork on them. The directive reckons that Apple’s “lack of floppy disk drive” is discriminatory to EU residents, and that the Apple logo doesn’t hail from the apple-growing regions of Southern France.

If this is true, then we’re ought to vote the clones who site at the European parliament and replace them by people with commonsense.

  2. You do see the date on this article right?

    Friday 01 Apr 2005 – 10:15

The European Union has revealed it is to ban the sale and use of Apple Macintosh computers by 2006 – citing “the need for unification” in a directive unveiled today.

Come on, people… that’s funny stuff.

  4. Boeing777 — further down in the Digit article:

“Designers will face tough punishments under the new law — with even the eating of apples (and some oranges) at Windows computers liable for a fine of €5,000. People using the colour Aqua will face a lesser fine of €2,000.

    April Fool’s joke? Duh!

  5. If Apple is going to have Tiger preloaded on the MacMini, in the near future, I hope that the version of the MacMini will come with 512MB of System RAM and hopefully a minimum of 64MB of video RAM to ensure a decent performance. Otherwise, I would imagine that there will be some irate customers. The unreleased iPod dock connector on top would have make more sense as well, freeing up the firewire port for the iSight camera. Thus creating a perfect little video communication center with Tiger’s iChat.

  6. I’ve waited for the same reasons. Tiger pre-loaded.

I wonder how many people will look at the Mini at Best Buy and then ask where the Mac software is, to only find out they don’t carry any. It may have a negative effect on Apple.

  7. Bandit Bill “then ask where the Mac software is, to only find out they don’t carry any. It may have a negative effect on Apple.”

Bandit Bill how right you are.

  8. Wow! It amazes me to see the attitude of some of the Mac fans here. I think some get carried away in their verbal attacks on PC users, but to see the harsh attitude toward other Mac loyalists is beyond imagination. Boeing777 made a mistake in his reaction to an article, but lighten up a little you guys. If you guys are going to react so harshly to a misinterpretation of a news article, I would hate to see your reaction towards PC users. It’s types like some of you that completely undo all the efforts of the rest of us that are trying to convert the world by lending a kind, helpful hand instead of a slap to the face.

  9. “Bandit Bill “then ask where the Mac software is, to only find out they don’t carry any. It may have a negative effect on Apple.”

Stupid. Says its alrdy loaded in the mini.

  10. Bravo king_alvarez. One person pointing out his mistake is one thing, but half a dozen jumping on him just isn’t fair.

Now, back to the subject… Apple has MUCH higher standards than any other tech company, even more than some marketing companies. The fact is that there is no company anywhere like Apple when you look at their accomplishments, quality design, and presentation in the marketplace. However, I’m afraid that push for cheaper products will result in cheaper products, and that we can not have.

Best Buy will be learning a few things from Apple’s marketing people or they’ll lose out in the long term. Maybe I should get into marketing. Lots of opportunity. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

  11. Wow, theman-x, I didn’t know that the Mac Mini comes loaded with every application available for Mac OS X… it’s an even better deal than I thought! ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”cheese” style=”border:0;” />

  12. coolfacter: “Best Buy will be learning a few things from Apple’s marketing people…”

Haha ha ho ho ho ha haaahaaa ha hahaha hha hoo hhaaa!!!!

That Best Buy will learn or that Apple´s marketing has something to teach?
Apple has only 2% of the computer market – that is great marketing????

  13. Boeing777’s “vote” comment suggests he lives in the EU. Is April Fools Day “celebrated” in EU countries? If not, the date April 1 may have no special significance to some EU citizens. People should lighten up and recognize that the internet crosses many cultures, and that comments and jokes may lack the same context for all.

  14. April Fool day does exist in Europe. It originated in Europe. April 1st used to be the 1st day of the new year a long time ago (year 1500 or so I think). It was switched to Jan 1st, however some people continued to recognized April 1st as the New Year. These people were called “Fools.”

Still, don’t be too hard on those that get fooled. It happens to all of us. I remember last year being so excited at the thought of a Apple Tablet Mac. I still want one.

  15. I went to BestBuy today to help a friend buy a broadband router and guess what I saw on display? Thats right a Mac mini. It was attached to a sony monitor and Apple’s keyboard and “stupid” one button mouse. I immediately went into describing to my computer challenged friend. I’m won’t go into a long story but I’m glad the Mac mini is at BestBuy.
