A tale of two school systems: Windows schools crippled while Mac schools unaffected
Thursday, August 21, 2003 - 03:40 PM EST"Bowling Green City Schools Technology Coordinator Lee Jordan thought the systemís thousand or so computers had been inoculated against the latest round of viruses. That was until Wednesday, when the Nachi worm began shutting down computers equipped with Windows 2000 and Windows XP until the entire network was crippled. The worm sought out other computers on the districtís network, which is controlled remotely, and began shutting them down, Jordan said," Robyn L. Minor reports for The Bowling Green Kentucky Daily News.
Minor reports, "Today the system remains completely offline, impacting its cafeteria system, pupil attendance, maintenance and instructional system. Several hundred computers were directly infected. 'It hurt us really bad,' Jordan said. He said that he and others had to physically disconnect each computer in the system while working to fix problems."
"Warren County schools werenít affected, according to Technology Coordinator Pat Stewart. Jordan said the county lucked out because it has mostly Apple computers, which have been immune thus far to the viruses... Jordan said heís not sure what can be done to prevent such occurrences in the future," Minor reports.

Btw, I spoke with an H.S. Principal who had cast the tie-breaking vote (of teachers) to consolidate on the Windows platform the day before the Klev (sic) virus hit, disabling all the Windows PCs, but leaving their Macs unaffected. He then quickly changed his mind and switched his vote and the school is now running entirely on Macs running OS X Jaguar.
