Someone finally does it right: Mitsubishi debuts in-dash slot for Apple iPod nano
Wednesday, May 17, 2006 - 01:26 PM EDT

Finally someone has done it right! Mitsubishi's iCar, marketed only in Japan at the moment, features an in-dash "iPlay Edition" slot that accepts an Apple iPod nano, like an 8-track (if you remember what those were). There's an iPod dock connector in the slot and the iPod nano slides all the way into the slot. We think there's an ejector mechanism that'll push the nano back out when you need it, but our japanese is rusty (as in, nonexistent), so if anyone can translate better, please help below. The nano is controlled via the iCar's built-in, hard drive-based satellite navigation system.

Anyway, our own SteveJack - a man ahead of his time - asked for this a long time ago on August 07, 2003:

[I've been] thinking about using Apple's iPod in the car. It's kind of a pain right now with cords, devices, adapters, chargers, FM broadcasters, and your iPod sliding around on the seat or stuck in some weird mount screwed or stuck to your vehicle. Not as smooth as Apple, I'm sure, would wish... I believe the description below is what Apple should be working on, but only if they want to make a boat-load of money. It's very simple, really; take a current CD/Cassette/AM/FM car stereo and replace the cassette slot with an iPod slot. With a few changes to the display and some controls, Apple would have a beautiful new 'iTunes Car Stereo' just in time to roll it out in Best Buy stores nationwide for the holidays. Of course, it would be white with a nice silver Apple logo. Maybe an optional black unit could be available, too, just in case. Or brushed aluminum?

This Apple-branded head unit with a slot into which the iPod slides, along with a slot-loading CD and AM/FM, would be the perfect solution to using an iPod on the road. Neat and tidy, just like Apple and Mac users like things; no cords or attachments and the iPod would have a safe place to live while in your vehicle. This head unit would provide iPod controls on its face, like any car stereo, but iPod-specific along with the normal CD and radio controls. Also a nice display that would mimic the iPod's display. New iPod's have the stereo line out. It's on the iPod Dock which means it's also one of the pins in the funky new Dock Connector port - no dock needed when the iTunes Car Stereo's head unit is the dock.

Should I expect it to be able to rip a CD in the car or record off the radio? I'll leave that to the lawyers.
- SteveJack, Apple's new iTunes Car Stereo should debut this fall for holiday sales season - August 07, 2003

Obviously, to protect against obsolescence, the slot should be large enough to accommodate a 5G iPod (forget about the rumored bigger "true" video iPods, they'll just have to use a cord adapter) and inserts to allow smaller iPods to fit snugly into the slot. That way, when Apple changes iPod sizes (smaller), a new plastic adapter can just be ordered to make the car's iPod slot fit perfectly. An iPod-shaped plug with a short cord and a dock connector would be used for older iPods and newer larger format iPods (if such a thing exists).

I like the car.

May 17, 06 - 02:57 pm Comment from: small car

this car is a death trap here in SUV/Pick Up Texas heaven.

May 17, 06 - 03:03 pm Comment from: drz

How about a Bluetooth iPod that can stream to a BT car stereo. Never would need to take it out of a pocket / purse.

May 17, 06 - 03:05 pm Comment from: rasterbator

Cool technology, but I thought Apple locked up iPlay and iCar. Bad move Apple!

WARNING: This car is assembled form small parts. Not recommended for children under 3. wink

May 17, 06 - 03:07 pm Comment from: rasterbator

Attention iCar owner: Please install decent alarm system or thugs will pick your car up, turn it over, and shake it violently until your iPod falls out.

May 17, 06 - 03:16 pm Comment from: Bert

Did SteveJack patent his idea? Does he intend to sue?

May 17, 06 - 03:39 pm Comment from: Pete

That will work nice until apple changes the dock connector or the size of the ipod.

May 17, 06 - 03:41 pm Comment from: MCCFR

One things for sure…ain't no WMA player going to fit in that slot EVER.

May 17, 06 - 03:41 pm Comment from: Mr. Peabody

Must have Mitsubishi...

May 17, 06 - 04:02 pm Comment from: JadisOne

Neat idea. Ugly car.

May 17, 06 - 04:14 pm Comment from: Tom Strong

Too bad that car is gay.

May 17, 06 - 04:16 pm Comment from: Ted

Too bad Mitsubishi doesn't build any cars I would ever want to own. They don't even make good rental cars.

May 17, 06 - 04:16 pm Comment from: BustingTheSkullsOfIdiots

The kiddies in Japan and Europe will snarf this car up. It's one of those in-town cars that you use to go everywhere in a 50 mile radius, but you never drive out of town.

May 17, 06 - 04:52 pm Comment from: Tom Cruise

You don't know the history of gay cars...I do.

May 17, 06 - 05:01 pm Comment from: iSteve

I can't wait until we get small cars like that in the US. My Scion xA is bigger than I need for in-city commuting. Also, Mitsubishi makes the engine for the even smaller [Mercedes] smart fortwo so their quality can't be all bad.

Lucas,

We see the translation.

We think that's why MDN asked for help.

>> Tom Strong

Yes, Tom, indeed it is too bad the car is gay--it's thinner, better-looking and lives in a better neighborhood than you do!

May 17, 06 - 06:10 pm Comment from: Brian

Haha, good job nuflux.

May 17, 06 - 06:57 pm Comment from: steve

when gas hits $7.00 a gallon you will hug that car!!!!

Translation from J to E still needs human touch...
Here is partial translation.

Once iPod nano is inserted, there are no other messy operation. User can operate the iPod nano through touch panel on HDD navigation screen.

- The option adds two front tweeters and two rear speakers to standard two front speakers, making it 6-speaker audio system.
- The car is available in two body colors, white-pearl and black to match the iPod colors.
- Anyone who orders the car will receive a special iPod engraved with "i (AI)" logo as a gift (2GB)

Target sales: 3000 cars (5/2006 - 10/2006).

List price for Model M is $15,855 for 2WD and $17,115 for 4WD (calculated with 100 yen=$1. Actual exchange rate I believe is about 110 yen=$1.), 4 Speed Automatic transmission, 660cc DOHC, 12 valve 3 cylinder MIVEC inter-cooler turbo. Ironic.... White-pearl is $210 extra.

May 17, 06 - 07:30 pm Comment from: Mr. Reeee

What a cool looking car! There are lots of small cars like that in Europe, too.

It would be great to have something like that in the States... legions of them would certainly help cut on US gas guzzling... BUT you'd risk certain death being creamed by all the morons driving their 10mpg SUVs while yapping on their cell phones.

May 17, 06 - 07:46 pm Comment from: Hey Mikey!

SteveJack has a good idea, however Apple changes things way too often to make this a widespread implementation.

Plus the iPod nano doesn't hold nearly enough music.

May 17, 06 - 08:14 pm Comment from: Cubert

Steve Jack is always ahead of the curve.

May 17, 06 - 08:45 pm Comment from: MacScott

If you could add a wireless card to the stereo and use iSync to sync your music to it while it sits in the driveway, now that would be something.

May 17, 06 - 08:46 pm Comment from: big tex

anyone who dosen't thiink this is a good idea can go to hell.

May 17, 06 - 08:59 pm Comment from: Carson Busses

Steve Jack and I are on the same wavelength. I wrote Apple about this in 2002, and suggested the very same thing. I told them that by marketing this very idea to the auto industry and making such an iPod slot an industry standard, that the market share for iPods could increase.

I don't take credit for what Mitsubishi has done, and I won't be smug that I may have thought of this at the same time or sooner than the good Mr. Jack. Quite the contrary. It simply proves what I call Carson's Fourth Law of Innovation: if I'm thinking about it, then it must be in late beta somewhere.

Funny how we can imagine something, and assume that we are the only person to think of it. This is proof that this rarely happens. But I am happy to see that others saw what I did, and made the most of it.

Creativity can be pretty contageous sometimes.

May 17, 06 - 09:02 pm Comment from: Nick

I'm surprised there's enough room for an iPod nano in that bad boy.

Oh well, I guess it's bigger than my motorcycle.

LOL

Dude, that's the best ever. I salute you.

May 17, 06 - 09:05 pm Comment from: Loooong wait for ShortHorn

What if:

i) if Steve decides to kill iPod nano to a better product (like what he did to ipod mini)?

ii) They decide to slim some more on the product (Width & Length)?

iii) Next ipod is all touch screen?

iv) Change the connection interface?

May 17, 06 - 09:07 pm Comment from: Nick

It's got a 0.66L engine!

That's intense!

May 17, 06 - 09:15 pm Comment from: Loooong wait for ShortHorn

Steve Monkey Boy: " Darling, can you help me to bring the masking tape over please?"

His wife: " Sure honey, for what?"

Steve Monkey boy: " I want to seal the empty slot here?"

His wife: "What is that slot for?"

Steve Monkey boy: " ah.. errr... The government is coming out with a new card system to slot into the car, and the it will automatically deduct our taxes thru that card. And I don't like that idea."

Steve Monkey boy thinks to himself: " Ha ha. Brain washing done again. I am such a genius!"

That's no god danged SUV. I'm a flag waving American and I deserve my 8 mpg truckosaris to drive 60 miles each way to my walmart job. I love walmart, cause prices are fallin'. I love those redneck funny fellers too. Now where did I put my twinkees, I'm so hungry I could eat a hoho too. Stupid world trying to tell us Americans, (911,911,911,911,911) what to do.

May 18, 06 - 05:41 am Comment from: wilson

I don't think it was "done right", why? Two reasons:
1. You will get scratches all over your nano;
2. The interface=is not iTunes;
And the interface is touch-sensitive = really dangerous, there are some controllers made for BMW's that are installed on the steering wheel (me want one!). I'm waiting for an Apple electric iCar quadCore x86 running FrontRow and an iPod whell like steering wheel!

May 18, 06 - 12:23 pm Comment from: Less is More

Still awaiting a reasonable solution.

May 18, 06 - 01:52 pm Comment from: TheConfuzed1

What I want is a solution that will allow me to plug my iPod into a dock in either the glovebox, or the center console, and control my ipod using either an added trackwheel in an unobtrusive, yet easily reachable location, or a virtual clickwheel on the touch screen of my Honda Ridgeline's navigation screen. Of course, I would also like to view on my navi screen a mirror image of the iPod's screen itself. Direct, on-screen, touch navigation of the ipod's hierarchy of menus would also be a huge plus.

Honda has an accessory iPod connection, but it is very archaic in implementation, and nowhere near as intuitive as the iPod's controls.

May 18, 06 - 10:24 pm Comment from: Dave

As usual it's the Japanese that do it right first--what is wrong with our car makers?
