Leaked magazine report: Apple to debut ‘iGame’ portable-gaming device in May?
Thursday, March 09, 2006 - 02:30 PM EDT

"A friend just passed me a photocopy of what is supposedly an article from an upcoming issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly about Apple’s soon to be released gaming device called, what else, iGame," "AH" reports for Station A. "I have the actual magazine the article appears in clutched in my grubby little hands. It indeed caomes in the April 06 issue. It is NOT described as a rumor, and in fact is supposedly set to be introduced at this May’s Electronic Entertainment Expo in LA."

"AH" provides a link to a scan of the PDF of the actual article and emphasizes "the article itself is NOT A FAKE. If the information EGM is relaying to it’s readers is incorrect is another matter. But this article will be in the April 06 issue of EGM. So save the "it’s Photoshopped", "FAKED" nonsense. Don’t believe it will happen? Fine. But the article, and that’s all I am reporting on here, will happen."

Full article, with scans, full transcription, and more info, here.

[Thanks to MacDailyNews Reader "AH" for the heads up.]

I have a hard time believing this.

That market is somewhat overcrowded.

April Fool's joke I am sure. Where would all the games be coming from???? The large catalog of existing Mac games? <sarcasm>

Jay Leno Sucks declares --

This is as phoney as the asinine "jokes" that Leno pukes out every night on his "talk show".

Can you say, "April Fool's Edition"?

The device looks too cheesy to be designed by Apple!

Mar 09, 06 - 03:56 pm Comment from: b

not worth a response.

Wait, is that a response? It is. I take it back. It is worth a response.
Fake!! Stupid. Photoshopped.

Mar 09, 06 - 03:57 pm Comment from: chi guy

Why would a person dance while playing a game.

Its not even the current logo (apple with a swoosh).

The only place this article is going to run is in the onion.

BULLSH!!!

Mar 09, 06 - 04:00 pm Comment from: CharlieBing

Me? I don't believe it, but fake or fact, we should know fairly soon: according to the Ziff Davis web site, the April 2006 edition of Electronic Gaming News goes to the newstands on March 14. At least the supposed article doesn't contain all the "it's" grammar errors that appear in AH's report...

Mar 09, 06 - 04:03 pm Comment from: Ho ho ho!

Hoax!

Even if the article is real, that only means the magazine itself got hoaxed.

Too bad, because I loves me any handheld game machine. Gotta get em all!

Mar 09, 06 - 04:03 pm Comment from: Mac12EightK

Is iGame trademarked by Apple? That's the litmus test. Apple trademarks terms years in advance of release.

Mar 09, 06 - 04:04 pm Comment from: bscepter

That's so fake it's not even funny. Terrible design, too.

(MDN Magic Word: "Truth")

Mar 09, 06 - 04:04 pm Comment from: MacMan

Apple has done one article prior to the product announcement. This article was leaked one day ahead (Time Magazine put it up on their website too soon). It was the iMac G5.

I can't believe this because:
1)This is not Time Magazine
2)The product anouncement is in May (?) and the article is to be released in April (?)

Apple does not like to show its hand prior to a release. Plus, if the product cannot ship in a time close to the announcement, it allows Apple to pull the announcement and wait until there is a product to release.

This is definitely bogus...

Besides, who wants a mac gaming device? I would rather see a high end portable video device or tablet or resurrected Newton on steroids!

Mar 09, 06 - 04:05 pm Comment from: RC

It's called an APRIL FOOLS JOKE!!!

Mar 09, 06 - 04:06 pm Comment from: Wonkey

"So save the 'it’s Photoshopped', 'FAKED' nonsense.

Methinks "AH" doth protest too much. The only people who would suggest that it was "nonsense" to speculate on faked Apple product announcements are fakers or tragically naive.

Mar 09, 06 - 04:08 pm Comment from: Jeff

nonsense

Complete garbage hoax.

First of all, even if Apple was already in production with this device, there's no way they would talk about it with a gaming magazine. Isn't happening.

Mar 09, 06 - 04:13 pm Comment from: obvious

April Fools.

Wait'll you see what Steve REALLY unveils April 1 to mark 30 years of Apple!

The CEO's even going to work a SATURDAY for the media event!

Ah! The bliss of unfounded speculation...

Mar 09, 06 - 04:17 pm Comment from: mike k.

i have not laughed out loud at a mock up in a while. That right there is some funny stuff. I especially like how the "iGot game headline" is horizontally misaligned. That happens quite a bit in publishing.

What the hell kind of buttons are those for a gaming machine? I imagine the instructions will read as follows: "To throw a pass press 'track forward' while behind the line of scrimmage. To hurdle, press the 'menu' button."

Good joke, bad fake.

It's a metaphor. There's no Apple game device. iPod is used as a metaphor for all kinds of things because it's such a pop culture icon for all personal electronic devices.

Mar 09, 06 - 04:27 pm Comment from: Poppycock

to Origami: No, it's not.

Mar 09, 06 - 04:42 pm Comment from: Whatever

Nice take MDN, after you got all the readers observations.

Mar 09, 06 - 04:52 pm Comment from: m

April fools. Faker than 'origami'. Its "up there" with the Apple iPad (SNL).

More likely that future iPods would add more functionality and/or basic games. We don't need another gaming platform. and who the heck would design this thing as a square? its not a practical shape.

Mar 09, 06 - 05:03 pm Comment from: Sensei

nonsense ... = April fools joke

Mar 09, 06 - 05:18 pm Comment from: Gavin

where is the on/off button? I hope its not near the controls

Nice gameboy crusiform in the graphic. Isn't that an infringment of some patent?????

Leo

Mar 09, 06 - 05:21 pm Comment from: Chris

Regardless, Apple probably won't be able to use the iGame moniker.

I am a founding member (though no longer associated with) an organization called iGames - it is a LAN gaming center owner association.

Mar 09, 06 - 05:30 pm Comment from: developers?

game developers would have been involved long ago - I doubt this would not have leaked before that (I'm assuming Apple would not announce a device such as this a year ahead of release or whatever would be the minimal time necessary to port games from other platforms)

Mar 09, 06 - 05:35 pm Comment from: REALITY!

Fake.

It doesn't fit into Apple's look and they haven't used that version of the Apple logo in years.

Mar 09, 06 - 05:36 pm Comment from: Luke

That thing can't be real. It's got more than six buttons, (not including keyboards) so itcan't be from Apple.

Mar 09, 06 - 05:38 pm Comment from: iMaki

Hmmm, I'm pretty sure this is a fake, but a combo game machine, iPod music and video, plus a few other palm-type features, could make something like this interesting. As far as the thing looking "cheezy," well, looking at the butt-ugly HiFi, anything's possible.

Mar 09, 06 - 05:58 pm Comment from: deedubya

Apple would never make an ad that looked so lame. Not to mention the igameboy rip off. Somebody did a godawful job on that, good luck next year.

Mar 09, 06 - 06:17 pm Comment from: Dave

If this device was going to be announced at a trade show in May, Apple WOULD NEVER allow an April issue of a magazine (which would hit the newstands before April) to publish the information.

Remember the Time debacle of a few years ago with the G4 iMac (and that his stands only hours before the announcement).

Add that to the April, as in April Fools edition, and you know it's a fake!

Mar 09, 06 - 06:20 pm Comment from: Loru

EGM every year is notorious for an april fools article. This is most likely it!

Mar 09, 06 - 06:40 pm Comment from: Big Al

Not only is it an April Fools joke but Origami's something better is an even bigger steaming pile of shit than the iGame.

Talk about a major disappointment, ORIGAMI is the disappointment of the year.

Mar 09, 06 - 07:05 pm Comment from: lbuschjr

Apple NEVER places ads for a product prior to at least announcing it. No way this is real.

Plus, the buttons on the right of the unit are not evenly spaced (top one is too far left), the control pad is straight off of a Game Boy, and the Apple logo is tilted too far for the screen.

Plus, why is the figure in the background obviously listening to music when this is supposed to be a game device?

Mar 09, 06 - 07:17 pm Comment from: Ed

This is real!!

there will be no cartridges. You connect to your mac and download all the games from itunes. It will work just like the ipod , but for games.

Downloading games is the future!

Mar 09, 06 - 07:22 pm Comment from: Twinkie

Dont know if its real or not but on the PDF of the article there is no TV Shows or Music Videos in the left hand search bar.....
