Microsoft plays catch-up to Apple, looks to open branded retail store in NYC
Monday, August 29, 2005 - 02:04 PM EDT

"Microsoft Corp. is on the prowl for a store in Times Square. The move would be the software giant's first big stab at retail and may be an attempt to play catch-up with archrival Apple, which has hit a home run with its own branded stores, including its New York City flagship in SoHo," Louise Kramer reports for The New York Post. "Microsoft is looking for a large space to create a 'branding experience' a la Apple's showroom and information center."

Kramer writes, "Apple took what was viewed as a big risk by branching into retail, but the venture has been such a success that the company has opened 110 stores while Microsoft has continued selling through other retailers. Microsoft did attempt a small-scale retail store, called MicrosoftSF, in San Francisco. It opened in 1999 and closed three years later. In recent weeks, Microsoft officials have been in touch with New York real estate brokers who have worked on transactions in Times Square. A company spokesman declined to comment."

Redmond, start your copiers!

"there are so many sheep-like tourists grazing along at 2 mph. They clog the sidewalks like so much mammalian molasses."

In other words, it's the perfect site for a MS store. I'm not sure if that's reflective of the people who choose MS, or indicative of how MS views their users (or both).

"I hope the windows of the storefront will be shatterproof ... too bad they can't make their OS the same way."

I wonder if MS's usual team of security experts will be involved with the store. Let the humor begin...

Aug 29, 05 - 10:26 pm Comment from: max

Let's forget the mere store. MS should BUY Times Square, all of it, and turn it into a giant "Microsoft Media Experience". It'd be an experience true to the MS way.

Wow Mac Dood, your a schmuck. Congratulations.

Actually I am a Mac user. But way to leap to conclusions based on zero facts. Really works to assert your level of intelligence.

But all your rambling didn't refute my point. Cross platform is great. I agree with you there.
But lets' not mix up the point of what I wrote.
MDN likes to toss around the terms "open format" and "locked in" but only when it relates to M$.

And lemmings such as yourself follow along blindly when you couldn't be more hypocritical if you tried.

Current iTunes customers are "locked in" to the iPod so long as they purchase music from iTMS. They could of course further degrade the music they spent their money on by going through the process MDN advocates to free their music from Apple's propritary DRM if they want to go to a competing MP3 player. But why should they have to?

They bought the music right? Shouldn't they be able to play it on their player of choice?

Is that user friendly?
Is that serving the needs of their customers?
Stop sucking at the corporate tit of Apple like MDN does.
In my opinion there is no better technology company in the world than Apple. But their reluctance to endorse a user friendly and open standard as well as competitor licensable DRM so consumers can play purchased iTMS music on MP3 players of their choice, without further degrading quality or breaking the DMCA, is a little to M$ for my liking.

Now I am not surprised ignorant sheep such as yourself will just go right along with whatever position Apple takes. And thats fine. But I called MDN out for being hypocrites. And they are.

Cross platform is a good point, one MDN has seemingly adopted to distract from the criticism Apple is on the receiving end of in regards to licensing FairPly out. But Apple's slogan is Think Different. Not stop thinking. Don't confuse the two Mac Dood. It makes you seem a bit pathetic.

You guys are so excellent!
I don't usually read every post on a MDN page this long but this is funnier than a Leno monologue.
Good stuff. "Wipe drive and reinstall day".
Love it.
True humour is based on truth.
Oh yes, Micros**t sucks.

Oh, and Blow.. I mean Good Job:
I made sure I did not read your post just above there after being subjected to the first bunch of drivel. I'm afraid you're a bit of a sour puss. A floating Band-Aid in the jacuzzi.
Lighten up.
It's just a computer.
And btw, Micros**t sucks.

Oh Dearest Lord:

I sware i can see it now.........

You walk up to the store, a big snot green 'Start' button is on the door surrounded by the slogan "the eXPerience 'Start's here! and a little Windows Logo is next to it. The whole theme of the store is blue, green, and orange. With a gray rug and gum stuck in it all over, its the hippest store around.

The inside isnt anything to write home about......There are about 20 employees who come and try to help you- over to the one shelf in the middle of the store with Windows XP, Office, Microsoft- branded keyboards and mice, and other Microsoft merchandise- all sealed in a glass cabinet with locks (because people might try and steal this stuff). On the walls, there are pictures of the infamous "Bliss" background and quotes obviously taken from Microsoft executives and fanboys from Windows forums.

Then, an X-Box section no more than 6 feet away from that singular shelf, with a big "pre-order xbox 360" sign on it. There are games, guides, accessories, live subscriptions, and systems up for sale.

The third corner in the store is a "Microsoft Windows Vista Preview Area" which will hilight all of the features obviously stolen from OS X.

And then, of course- The Hardware. The "almighty" iRiver! and the PocketPC and all products that use Windows Mobile! And who could forget the Tablet?!

And here's the best part......NO LINES! There is an illusion that there are no customers, but that's because they check them out so fast, theyre in and out in a flash! Some even claim to be leaving to rent a U-Haul and fill it with the great products Microsoft has to offer!

Yes, Microsoft has made a wise decision indeed....

Buisness will be booming, booming!

Dear "Good Job"

Chill out dude, you've got some serious issues!

I don't disagree with what you've said, but I think it's a little out of context and back to front.

Remember, the iTunes Stores were never intended to be profitable, they are a service for iPod owners, intended to help sell more iPods by adding more value to them than the competition's players. How well that philosophy has worked!

ITunes were never intended for people to causally buy music, as some other stores are, they are for iPod owners. So if you don't want an iPod, don't use iTunes. There are plenty of other music strores.

Aug 30, 05 - 05:41 am Comment from: Rutger

of course there will not be real employees in the store, but instead that annoying PAPERCLIP and DOG will be hunting you down. The horror...

Aug 30, 05 - 07:48 am Comment from: Macaday

This will be the BEST failure for Microsoft yet... the opportunity for all the world to go along an complain infront of everyone else about how bad Windows is..

THE busiest part of it all will be the REFORMAT BAR.

Aug 30, 05 - 07:57 am Comment from: Bartsimpsonhead

Three Years?!?

Do you really think it will be that long before they close "the blue screens of death" over the storefront windows? (pun intended!)

I'd like to see Apple open a store over the way from the M$ store - just so the M$ customers over at the Dark Side can see really happy Mac users comming out of their store on the Light Side of the Square (and maybe entice a few Windowz users in...)

Aug 30, 05 - 09:18 am Comment from: poggi11

Hey guys! Cool off on Micro$oft.

Imitation is absolutely the highest form of flattery so Apple owes it to Bill and Micro$oft for legitimizing (and unknowingly evangelizing) Apple's already great products. The best is yet to come.

Good take, MDN!

Magic Word - Issue, as in Windoze has issues

Aug 30, 05 - 10:17 am Comment from: Good Job

Good point Brad, except for the fact that we love to tout iTMS as the "market leader", "forefront of digital music sales", blah blah blah. But now it is just a causal service for iPod users? Convenient.

And while you seem to believe I missed the point I am pretty sure you missed mine.

You can't throw the "locked in" argument at MS if all the "casual users" of iTMS out there who currently have iPods can't move their purchased music to a new player, if they so choose, without degrading sound quality by employing MDN's endorsed "Download, Burn, Rip and see what you are left with" method or cricumventing the DMCA by using a program like Hymn. That is also "locked in". Clearly not just a symptom of being a M$ user.

I guess pointing out this little fact to the "causal users" of iTMS means I have "serious issues" but I am pretty sure I am just pointing out the obvious to those who choose not to see it because Apple has blessed their refusal to part license FairPlay as ensuring the whole "iTMS/iPod experience".

Tell me again why someone else being able to buy iTMS tracks to put on their Zen affects me when I put those same tracks on my iPod. Talk about FUD.

MDN, and the rest of you commenters who shovel Apple's crap, would be taken much more seriously if you were able to see the forest for the trees.

Aug 30, 05 - 10:38 am Comment from: Cloudwall

Wow, some ugly stuff going on here. Anyway I think "Spark" had an interesting observation about M$ coming out with hardware, but that would be way too creative for them.

Speaking of creative, why would they attempt to open in NYC, a city full of creatives and probably the largest concentration of Mac users in the country.

it's "YOU'RE a schmuck"

you schmuck."

While we are on the subject of proper grammar, punctuation, etc., it's the ‘Shift’ key that allows you to type capital letters. Usually you put those at the start of a new sentence.

You schmuck.
You moron.
You idiot.

See? Much better.
Try it sometime.

But thanks for addressing that whole “locked in” argument. Or how you aren’t a bunch of whiny, condescending, smug, hypocrites who don’t have an original thought in your entire bodies.
No one reading this site for the first time could possibly come away with that impression of the Mac community.
Never.
You guys are doing all potential switchers a service here. No wonder Apple’s market share can’t seem to make it into double digits. You guys don’t exactly make it too enticing for anyone on the outside looking in to come on over to this side of the fence when you act like a bunch of lemmings who can’t think for themselves and side with a corporation over fellow consumers.

Aug 30, 05 - 01:13 pm Comment from: Gregg Thurman

This could prove to be very dangerous ground for Microsoft. People are going to expect them to fix operational problems on a myriad of different CPUs (that Microsoft did not manufacture).

They will also expect MSFT to remove spyware, virii, worms and other assorted malware.

The technical staff at this store is going to be overwhelmed.

When Microsoft declines to (or can't) fix the user's OS problems (or blames it on the CPU vendor) that customer is going to re-evaluate their next CPU buying preference. The only other consumer friendly alternative is MacOSX and nobody is complaining about their experience with it.

I hope MSFT does it.

Aug 30, 05 - 02:45 pm Comment from: Cloudwall

Let's hear it for Saint Good Job, the only Mac user on this site who isn't a "whiny, condescending, smug, hypocritical, jerk." We certainly are lucky to have someone post to the site that "thinks for himself."

Aug 30, 05 - 02:57 pm Comment from: Dr. Evil

I'd love to see Apple put up an Apple Store right next door. It'd be great to watch the MS employees stand around by themselves, goofing with the Start Menu while the Apple Store is packed w/ people.

I'd even stop by ocassionally to throw in a couple pocketfuls of crickets...just to keep the MS employees' morale up.

Aug 30, 05 - 03:18 pm Comment from: Good Job

Thanks Cloudwall! I was starting to feel underappreciated here but you really brought it all home for me.

But really, the "Saint" designation is just too much. I am near perfect and all but I am no Saint.

I'd love to see an Apple store, located where the MS store staff can look out their front door & see the Apple crowds and bags of Apple merchandise going out all day. Oh and have the merchandise bags have great big Apple logos just to make sure the MS people see every one.

MW? Paybacks. smile

Aug 30, 05 - 05:24 pm Comment from: PC Apologist

Wow.

Good Job is right - MDN's takes are hypocritical, especially when it comes to Apple's anti-competitive solutions.

Also, Good Job is wrong - "You shmuck" is not a sentence. No predicate. Try "You are a shmuck."

MacDood is wrong - iTMS does not provide functionality for everyone. *nix users are left in the cold. And when referring to "platform" with regard to music sales, one must take into account the portable music player "platform." iTMS supports only Apple hardware.

BOO on Apple for forcing iPod users to buy from iTMS, and BOO on Apple for denying iTMS to everyone else.

I know it's late. So what?
