Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor releases ‘the hand that feeds’ in GarageBand format for Mac users
Saturday, April 16, 2005 - 12:37 PM EDT

Attention Macintosh users: Trent has prepared a file for you that you might find interesting. From Trent's ReadMe:

Hello all-
For quite some time I've been interested in the idea of allowing you the ability to tinker around with my tracks - to create remixes, experiment, embellish or destroy what's there. I tried a few years ago to do this in shockwave with very limited results.
After spending some quality time sitting in hotel rooms on a press tour, it dawned on me that the technology now exists and is already in the hands of some of you. I got to work experimenting and came up with something I think you'll enjoy.
What I'm giving you in this file is the actual multi-track audio session for "the hand that feeds" in GarageBand format. This is the entire thing bounced over from the actual Pro Tools session we recorded it into. I imported and converted the tracks into AppleLoop format so the size would be reasonable and the tempo flexible.
So...
You need a Macintosh and you need GarageBand 2.0. If you have a newer Mac, you already have the software. The more RAM you have the better. I did this on a PowerBook 1.67 w/ 2G RAM but it has been running on far less powerful systems.
Drag the file over to your hard disk and double click it. Hit the space bar. Listen.
Change the tempo. Add new loops. Chop up the vocals. Turn me into a woman. Replay the guitar. Anything you'd like.
I gave this to my crew and band to test out and all work effectively stopped for a while - it's fun to mess around with. I've now heard a country version of the track as well as an abstract Latin interpretation (thanks, Leo).
There are some copyright issues involved, so read the notice that pops up. Giving this away is an experiment. I'm interested to see what comes of it, what issues are raised and what the results are.
Have fun-
Trent Reznor

Wow. How many artists would let people mess with their creations like that? Reznor is a stud!

I'm going to enjoy smirking at you the rest of the day, librium. smile

I'm d/l'ing this GB file from Reznor's site. I want to play with it and see what he's done. I have to wonder if it will spawn a whole new way of collaboration between artists and their fans?

Have the fans remix their song and be able to sell more remix albums. Sorta like the way stock photography houses have photo contests and then use the submissions for selling as stock. Genius. I'm not saying that's what Trent has in mind - but it'll probably turn into that with other artists.

This is great!!!!
I have an iMac 800MHZ G4 with 768MB of RAM and it plays with no problems or slowdowns.
I exported it to iTunes and downloaded it to my iPod!!
I am connecting my guitar to my mac now so that I can add another track and hear myself play along with Nine Inch Nails...Awesome!!

Thanks Trent

the music industry needs more people like trent running the show. too cool

Apr 16, 05 - 03:58 pm Comment from: Jeff

Open source music you might say! Although you can't commercially use this its still pretty cool! I've already been playing with it. Just from looking at this in GarageBand, I think I can now create much better music to use in my own videos. Thanks Trent!

RIAA executives have to be screaming over this. They must really hate artists like Trent Reznor who actually think about their fans.

Apr 16, 05 - 06:12 pm Comment from: thomas

wow, i really hope this turns into a trent...umm trend, with Apple adding another channel at iTunes for remixes. Okay, Madonna wont let you do this - but i wouldn't be surprised if there are lots of other artists who'd let you freak out their tracks. David Bowie, BT and Missy Elliot already did stuff like this (tho it was more competition-minded).
Okay, the labels will hate iTunes/Apple impact even more since there is no way they can make money out of this. oh well.

now where are all those doubters who said GB was just a toy? ;D

And you reckon this might sell a few more Macs?

A winner on many fronts, including for GB, the fans and the Mac!

Well done Trent

Getting this song in GB will be worth it to just see how Trent Reznor makes some of his music.

Apr 16, 05 - 09:47 pm Comment from: Too cool

I was not gonna buy the new ilife, at least not now but this makes me wanna get it now. Not only to listen to but to start anew something I had stop doing a long time ago. Creating music.......

This was installed at Best Buy (snickers), but the Mac Mini wouldn't run it! Too little ram. Beef it up! (the Mac Mini.)

Todd Rundgren: DAMNIT!

Poor Todd, he's been trying to do stuff like this for close to 30 years now... He was just ahead of his time.

Actually, if the record studios could get their heads out of their asses, they could see what a great marketing concept this sort of thing could be. I haven't bought a NIN CD for years, but now I've heard this, I will have to look for it when it comes out.

Wilco took Yankee Hotel Foxtrot straight to the fans online when their record company failed the band, and it was an unqualified success for them; Artists like NIN, BT, Bowie and the like invite you into their recording studio via cyberspace, and it brings interest from all corners of the globe. The internet is like electricity: it can either kill you or light to room. That the record companies only see death from the internet shows you how little they understand the reality of the 21st century.

Bravo to Trent Reznor, for remembering that it's the consumer that keeps his music alive, not the RIAA!!

lol@librium LOL

Apr 19, 05 - 02:09 pm Comment from: CH3MICAL

is it a marketing ploy? is it another poke at labels and fat cat's? is it just an opportunity to closer connect fan to musician? is it just a experiment for experiment sake? Only he knows, I'm just glad we have artists like him that continue to shake up the system; somebody has to take it back.
