Tiger Woods signs long-term deal with Apple Computer as Mac OS X ‘Tiger’ spokesperson
Friday, April 01, 2005 - 08:23 AM EDT

By Siddhartha Finch

CUPERTINO, California - April 1, 2005 - Apple® (Nasdaq:AAPL) today announced that the company has reached a multi-year agreement with Tiger Woods, the world's most-recognizable professional golfer, as the sole spokesman for Mac OS® X version 10.4 "Tiger," the fifth major version of Mac OS X.

"I am thrilled with my new relationship and involvement with Apple Computer, the personal computer industry's innovation leader. It is always important that I align myself with the best brands in each product category," said Tiger Woods. "Just as I'm always pushing myself to improve my golf game, Apple Computer continues to push the envelope in the personal computer operating system and software space. For me, I grew up with Macintosh computers and there's nothing better than partnering with Apple Computer."

"Tiger Woods and Apple Computer is the perfect marriage, with both of us striving to be the best. With OS X, Apple is the industry innovator in operating systems and our "Tiger+Tiger" partnership helps tell the world about the benefits of using Mac OS X,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “Others are now following OS X’s taillights, and "Tiger+Tiger" will make it even harder for them to ever catch up.”

Woods also sees Mac OS® X version 10.4 “Tiger,” as an opportunity for kids of all ages and backgrounds to be exposed to the sport of golf. "This partnership with Apple now extends to my work with EA SPORTS™ and today we are proud to announce the immediate availability of Tiger Woods PGA TOUR® 2005 for Mac OS X 10.4 “Tiger." With Apple now bundling Tiger Woods PGA TOUR® 2005 free with every new Macintosh, it's great to know there will be kids playing this game who are learning about the game of golf for the first time and seeing how fun and energized the sport truly is," said Woods.

"Today marks the launch of the largest ad campaign in company history. We will spend $300 million worldwide on the "Tiger+Tiger" ad campaign from now until the end of 2005” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “With more than 150 new features, we’re delivering innovations today that will not be seen in any other operating system for years to come.”

Mac OS X version 10.4 "Tiger" will be available on Friday, April 15, 2005 beginning at 8:00 p.m. through the Apple Store®, at Apple’s retail stores and through Apple Authorized Resellers for a suggested retail price of $129 (US). Users with a .Mac membership can take full advantage of all the innovative new features in Tiger to synchronize their information between multiple Macs. More information on Tiger can be found at http://www.apple.com/macosx/tiger/

Mac OS X version 10.4 "Tiger" continues Apple’s blazing pace of innovation with more than 150 breakthrough new features including Spotlight, a revolutionary way to instantly find any file, document or information created by any application on the Mac®; Safari™ RSS, a new version of Apple’s acclaimed web browser that incorporates instant access to RSS (Really Simple Syndication) data feeds on the web; Dashboard, a dazzling new way to instantly access a new collection of accessory "Widgets;" and a new version of Apple’s iChat instant messaging client with the industry’s first multi-person audio and video conferencing in a stunning 3D interface.

Apple ignited the personal computer revolution in the 1970s with the Apple II and reinvented the personal computer in the 1980s with the Macintosh. Today, Apple continues to lead the industry in innovation with its award-winning desktop and notebook computers, OS X operating system, and iLife and professional applications. Apple is also spearheading the digital music revolution with its iPod portable music players and iTunes online music store.

The Tiger Woods Foundation was established in 1996 by Tiger Woods and his father Earl to empower young people to reach their highest potential by initiating and supporting community-based programs that promote the health, education and welfare of all of America’s children. TWF started reaching out to young people primarily through junior golf clinics and a national grant program.  From these efforts evolved fundraising events such as the Target World Challenge and Tiger Jam.

The Foundation has grown to include participation in Target House at St. Jude Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.; the Start Something character development program created through our partnership with Target Stores; and the construction and development of the Tiger Woods Learning Center, an educational facility located in Anaheim, Calif. Tiger and Earl started the Foundation based on the belief that we all have the responsibility to help young people achieve their dreams. With the help of many friends and supporters, the Foundation has reached out to millions of children across the country. Finally selling the real pearl that Apple has -- the OS. They should have been advertising OSX ever since Jaguar. This would have increased the adoption of Macs into the population at a much higher rate as OSX is the real jewel that Apple has -- stability, ease of use, protection, great bundled software, and great looks.

Apr 01, 05 - 09:38 am Comment from: Ha!

Love it more than a whoopie cushion under my buttocks! wink

MW: "City", like the newest album by Client, which you should all give at least one listen to.

I read something about Microsoft releasing a new operating system in 2006, and that it's supposed to be stable, secure and more capable than anything that's gone before.

Can someone tell me if that's an April Fool's Day prank as well?

Apr 01, 05 - 10:01 am Comment from: K

Jobs must be having another pancreas operation. Or maybe taking hallucinating drugs for this. What a stupid ass thing to do.

Apr 01, 05 - 10:12 am Comment from: Georgy Porgy

This is not a good thing to...I just re-announced this to about 20 people at work and several of them are potential switchers I have been working on. Now who looks stupid? Me, or Apple computer? You just killed a few sales for Apple, thanks.

Apr 01, 05 - 10:18 am Comment from: mike

Apr 01, 05 - 10:44 am Comment from: Steve Jobs

Love the Sidd Finch reference! Happy April Fool's Day everyone!

Apr 01, 05 - 11:11 am Comment from: Andy C.

The telltale signs that this was a hoax:

1. MDN actually took the time to write a long article, their posts are never longer than 3-4 paragraphs.

2. MDN never posts related news photographs, only their cheesy spoof photos like the one of a tiger in front of a cow's head or Real's CEO holding a pair of donuts.

Apr 01, 05 - 11:33 am Comment from: DanK

That was a very mean joke.

A part of me just died.

Apr 01, 05 - 11:35 am Comment from: rogozhin

Georgy Porgy,

To answer your question, YOU are the one who looks stupid. This is the INTERNET, fer crissakes; believing anything you read today online is just invititing ridicule and scorn. Might want to check your calendar, while you're at it; for the last 423 years, nobody else has celebrated the New Year today, either...

BTW, did you know that the word 'gullible' isn't in the dictionary?

Apr 01, 05 - 11:38 am Comment from: Husky Varna

Not even Tiger Woods can save Buick...

Watch out Apple.

Apr 01, 05 - 11:58 am Comment from: Dimplemonkey

Sidd Finch! I remember him. He had a 100+ mph fastball and tried to fit in with the NY Mets organization, but alas, he decided to return to his Buddist roots.

Apr 01, 05 - 12:00 pm Comment from: DanK

um.... are you going along with the joke.... or do you just not get it?

Either way.

Happy Looney Day

Apr 01, 05 - 12:07 pm Comment from: G Spank

it would be awesome if they did that though wouldn't it?

Apr 01, 05 - 12:17 pm Comment from: Kirk

Good one. You got me! But, it does bring into question, where are all the Apple ads?

Apr 01, 05 - 12:28 pm Comment from: Fred Mertz

Unlike most other April Fools articles on the Mac Web, the beauty of MDN's April Fools article is that it contains bits of truth and hope and also raises questions. Like where is the Mac OS X advertising and gee, wouldn't it really be a pretty great idea if Apple did this?!

Just like last year's April Fools article from MDN - Apple and IBM announce enterprise servers featuring Mac OS X Server - it makes you think and wish it were true.

Apr 01, 05 - 12:35 pm Comment from: king_alvarez

Apr 01, 05 - 12:42 pm Comment from: Georgy Porgy

rhogoshit...then maybe I need to hang around at macosrumors instead of MDN if all I want is rumors instead of accurate information.

Apr 01, 05 - 12:52 pm Comment from: Spelunking Troglodyte

^Georgy Porkfat --

Okay. See ya later.

Have a good time with those once-in-a-blue-moon updates from macosrumors.

Apr 01, 05 - 01:38 pm Comment from: Zeke

As an AAPL investor I monitor sites like this for the latest breaking business news in order to manage my investment. I frankly don't appreciate having to sift through outright fabrications that attempt to be funny in order to gather the information I need. While I don't depend on any one site, sites like MDN often are the first to publish breaking news, so even though a single article may not be corroborated by any other sites for an hour or two, I do analyze and consider each one I see. Reading a spoofed article like this one to determine its validity is a waste of my time.

Apr 01, 05 - 02:03 pm Comment from: Aaron

Zeke: Take a pill. I own AAPL too.

Hey, it's really not a bad idea, Apple. Think about it!

Apr 01, 05 - 02:06 pm Comment from: Ronnie

vampire

I hate April fools jokes, friggin' stupid.

Get back to the pop-under ads bitches.

Apr 01, 05 - 02:43 pm Comment from: Scott Rose

Wouldn't it be nice if Apple really DID take the advertising of their operating system seriously? This is just a huge mistake in my opinion. Apple should be advertising the hell out of Tiger, but I guarantee you won't see ANY advertisements about it at all... outside of the typical Mac magazines.

Apr 01, 05 - 04:11 pm Comment from: Zeke

I think Apple suffers from GM's Corvette syndrome; why advertise a product that sells as fast (or faster) than you can make it? Chevrolet Corvette, on a performance/dollar basis, beats the world hands down in the production automobile market, but you'll never see an ad to that effect. Why? Because Chevrolet sells all the Corvettes they make each year well before the production run is over.

Apr 01, 05 - 05:09 pm Comment from: Wingsy

I knew it was BS when it said something about Apple advertising its OS.

Apr 01, 05 - 06:44 pm Comment from: Bob

That's G-r-r-reat!

Are you sure it wasn't Tony the Tiger?

Apr 03, 05 - 11:04 am Comment from: Butt Pirate

Yeah, Tiger REALLY helped Buick sell cars too. Not!
Perfect marrage? Yeah, when speaking of his arrogance. That marrage will end in divorce.

Apr 04, 05 - 09:47 am Comment from: Ron Jon

Could have done a more convincing job with the Apple logo on the hat though. cool smirk

Apr 04, 05 - 09:47 am Comment from: try_me

>Perfect marrage? Yeah, when speaking of his arrogance. That marrage will end in divorce.

Yeah...probably his marriage also.

Unbelievable. PGA.com picked this up and is reporting it as actual NEWS! Opps... http://www.pga.com/news/industry/businessinsider/bizinsider040205.cfm
