The best $5 iPod owners will ever spend: Smartwrap controls those headphone cables
Tuesday, March 23, 2004 - 09:53 AM EDT

Smartwrap, winner of I.D. Magazine's Design Distinction Award, is a cord manager for iPod headphone cables. It is designed and developed by Sumajin, an industrial design firm in Singapore. Smartwrap is easy to use and it serves the purpose. All that is required is to snap the cord into place at one of two places, then wrap and snap into place again.

Smartwrap is thin enough to fit into our Marware 3G iPod CEO Classic case's pocket. It is made of pliable plastic polymer and, like the Mac, it is simple, easy-to-use, and it just works. No more "two-finger" cord wrapping, Halleluiah! We have been using Smartwrap for about a week with our iPods and we have no idea how we got along without it. In fact, we're planning to litter them all over as gifts to our iPod-using family and friends.

Each Smartwrap cost US$5. A per-order shipping cost of US$5 will be charged for orders up to 20 units. Until Smartwrap gets their online ordering system up and running, all payments can be made via PayPal. Items ordered will be sent by registered mail once payment is made. Delivery takes approximately 14 days. Smartwrap comes in white, translucent, black, orange, blue, green, purple and red. So, for $10 bucks total, you will have your Smartwrap in two weeks.

It is worth the wait. MacDailyNews highly recommends Sumajin's Smartwrap Headphone Cord Manager for all iPod and iPod mini users.

See the Smartwrap and order it here - you'll be glad you did.

I insist on paying at least $19.95 for an ipod accessory.

I have two of these Smartwraps. One for my iPod and one for my iPod mini. I agree. Can't live without 'em. Very nice product at a very nice price.

My biggest problem is the cords of the two earbuds getting entangled with each other. It doesn't look like this gadget will help with this problem.

gnugrep,

It actually does help. After a day or so of using it, the cords kind of retain the wrappin when unfurled. I've found it to relay help keep the cords untangled - even the earbud single cords.

Bummer that you have to order them. This would be a great impulse buy. They should keep them by the cash registers at Apple Stores.

Wow, a little piece of plastic in the right shape, and useful.

How oriental.

You know what it reminds me of--a Japanese magazine cutter, a little plastic wedge that has little pinlike blade you can use to cut coupons out of magazines, a frame from a manga, etc. Haven't seen one of those in years...

This really is a great idea. So simple. Unfortunately, the earphones I use has its own wire clip. Which isn't as simple and elegant as this one.

*gasp* an iPod accessory that costs less than $40?!? =P

Recently I've had to replace my iPod headphones (due to cord breakage) and I was going to buy another pair from Apple but I only found them available with the remote and the price wasn't agreeable to me. Went to BestBuy and found a cool pair of Sony earbuds for $10.99 and they came with a nice case that snaps the head buds in place and allows you to wind the cord up into a nice round small clear case. Very cool. And it's completely enlcosed to protect your precious ear gear. There are times Apple & Sony just seem to be on the same wavelength when it comes to ergonomic great industrial design!

Too expensive. $5 for a piece of molded plastic?!? I don't question that it is a fantastic idea, but c'mon, $10 after shipping is a bit much. This is the kind of product we will probably see selling for 99˘ at Wal-Mart or the grocery store. They should offer regular non-registered mail as an option. I don't think they have to worry too much about fraud for a $5 product.

I'm not cheap, I have a 40GB iPod and I'm just getting sick of all the price gauging that's going on in the iPod accessory market.

Sweet idea! Although, hmm... $5.00 + $5.00 shipping = $10.00... not that sweet of an idea. Eh, I think I'm just going to dig through my trash, find a hunk of plastic, pull out my pocket knife and in a minute, I'll be good to go.

Walking around with a chunk of milk carton dangling from your iPod should look really nice.

when you buy the Sony MDR-EX71SL http://www.w3cube.com/images/content/ex71sl.jpg and you get something similar for free - note the top left in this super small image (sorry the only I can find): http://www.loftynotion.com/pimages/xs/MDR-EX71SL.jpg

I have been using that and it's good as any

My problem is that the cord seems too short!!!, not too long (most of the time). Looks like a useful product though.
