Microsoft’s Ballmer: ‘Apple has sold more iPads than I’d like them to sell’
Thursday, July 29, 2010 - 05:19 PM EDT

Jay Yarow reports or The Business Insider, "Speaking at Microsoft's analyst day, CEO Steve Ballmer confessed Apple 'sold more [iPads] than I'd like them to sell.'"

Advertisement: Griffin PowerBlock for iPod, iPad, iPhone - Black. (NA23094) only $18.99

Yarow reports, "He also says getting a slate computer done right is 'one of the top issues on my mind.'"

MacDailyNews Take: What mind?

Yarow continues, "He's working with hardware partners to fine tune Windows 7 so it can work with slates and tablets."

MacDailyNews Take: DOA.

Ballmer "also took a little shot at the iPad, saying 'I don't think there is one size that fits all...I've been to too many meetings with journalists who spent the first 10 minutes of the meeting setting up iPad to look like a laptop.'"

To "set up to look like a laptop"? Why on earth would you do that. Must have been the MS workers trying to 'fix' the crowd of onlookers into thinking the iPad was hard to use. Pleeease.

Jul 29, 10 - 05:23 pm Comment from: maclouie

10 minutes to set up an iPad????

Jul 29, 10 - 05:25 pm Comment from: Deus Ex Technica

Ballmer is a master of "selling less"....

Jul 29, 10 - 05:25 pm Comment from: Arnold Ziffel

Ten seconds maybe.

Typical Balmer BS.

May Balmer reign forever at MS!!!!!

Shake that booty, Monkey Boy!!!

Jul 29, 10 - 05:29 pm Comment from: Crabapple

You have to love Uncle Fester, he speaks the truth even when it hurts. Part of the 10 minute set up is the effort the journalists make to disguise the fact that they are at an M$ meeting without an M$ powered device. May Uncle Fester retire from M$ when he chooses to, he is doing a very important job managing M$ so that it generates more income than that pipsqueek Apple that is not rotten to the core.

....now there is a standard to live up to...NOT

Jul 29, 10 - 05:32 pm Comment from: RLB

He was probably taught by Baldy Balmer how to set it up. Probably couldn't find the on butto !

Jul 29, 10 - 05:33 pm Comment from: geo

Plug in the charger/keyboard...then place the iPad on the charger...less than 10 seconds.

Jul 29, 10 - 05:34 pm Comment from: breeze

There's an App for that monkey boy...

On top of the plethora of different Windows 7 versions, there will also be Windows Phone 7 OS (Enterprise, Pro, Business, and Home versions) and Windows Slate 7 OS (Enterprise, Pro, Business, Home, and a "360" version for gaming). Simple.

"I don't think there is one size that fits all."

Let me help you with that, Monkeyboy --

"I don't think."

As I tell my children: "Kids you live in a land of unlimited opportunity where even a sweaty dancing monkey boy can become a billionaire and a CEO."

Jul 29, 10 - 05:37 pm Comment from: Gavin

Dear Ballmer, you already had a "slate computer done right." It was called the Courier. You scrapped it, remember?

Jul 29, 10 - 05:40 pm Comment from: kcwookie

Day late, dollar short.

Jul 29, 10 - 05:42 pm Comment from: steve h.

Ballmer needs a home-run. The days when Microsoft could plop a steaming pile of software on customers is over.

Jul 29, 10 - 05:43 pm Comment from: chew

@Gavin
Oh yes the Courier, an amazing piece of engineering except for one thing.....
It never existed

Jul 29, 10 - 05:44 pm Comment from: Proud Puppy

The only way to tune Windows 7 is to find a crapper, drop Windows 7 in crapper and flush, caution Windows has been know to cause crap backup.

Jul 29, 10 - 05:45 pm Comment from: Figurative

Setting up a iPad to look like a laptop? And that taking ten minutes?

HUH?

Is this guy an idiot? What in the heck is he talking about? I know know he is a liar in addition to being an arrogant used car salesman.

Jul 29, 10 - 05:49 pm Comment from: chew

He looks like he`s about to put his fist in his mouth.
I bet you he can eat a baby in one bite too.

Jul 29, 10 - 05:50 pm Comment from: anti-zune

Define experience you idiot. Do you know anything about experience other than acting like a baffoon and a used car sales person?

Jul 29, 10 - 05:54 pm Comment from: m159

More iPads than he would like? How about MacPros, MacBooks, iPods, iPhones, Apple TVs, etc. He's living in a world of Apple envy.

Jul 29, 10 - 05:55 pm Comment from: Jersey_Trader

"Credit to Ballmer for being honest."

But, as Ballmer goes on, Microsoft is trying to copy Apple's device again and not look to where Apple is going next. Microsoft again can't see that Apple has supplied another product AND SERVICE that easily shares and works with the existing Apple ecosystem.

May Ballmer be the captain of the sinking Microsoft titanic until that tub goes under.

Jul 29, 10 - 06:02 pm Comment from: Jamie

What exactly is he doing with his fist?

Jul 29, 10 - 06:05 pm Comment from: obtusegoose

You can't set up an iPad to look like a laptop. The icons are on a fixed grid system. As usual, Ballmer is making up issues that don't exist.

Jul 29, 10 - 06:10 pm Comment from: Roberto

I am unwrapping my new iPad as we speak!!!

Take that, Monkey-Boy!

Jul 29, 10 - 06:20 pm Comment from: Crabapple

@obtusegoose, You can buy an iPad keyboard that acts as a charger and dock..

As long as Uncle Fester is in charge of M$, he has my best wishes and good will.
Give credit where it is due, setting up an iPad with an iPad keyboard then setting but the case to hide the iPad so that it looks like a laptop could take upto 10 minutes for journalists who been fed a staple diet of M$ laptops all their lives.

Jul 29, 10 - 06:30 pm Comment from: Crabapple

PS, that fist is exactly what those journalists will get next time they attend an audience with him lagging iPads along! grin

Jul 29, 10 - 06:38 pm Comment from: Macromancer

First of all..was a 10 year head start not enough for Microsoft?

If there was EVER PROOF that MS has to wait for Apple to show them how to do something right, the iPad and MS' subsequent knock off will prove it.

And they still wont get it right.

Jul 29, 10 - 07:01 pm Comment from: Wha

@ Ballmer RE: ".I've been to too many meetings with journalists who spent the first 10 minutes of the meeting setting up iPad to look like a laptop.'"

Ballmer should notice both that all those journalists wanted an iPad so much that they modified it for their own purpose AND none of his crap was involved. Wait.. nevermind.. you did good Ballmy! Forget!... Forget!

Jul 29, 10 - 07:12 pm Comment from: Burrell

I am sorry to see Balmer descending into paranoid delusions coupled with verbal expression problems, because it means we will shortly be deprived of laughing at his inane wanderings through the tech world as he gets the "Board Boot" treatment.

Well, we can always start picking on someone else who can't handle the verbal job, you know, like maybe, someone who has to read from pre-done notes all the time because he never learned how to speak in high school and college.

Mind you now, I am not thinking of any one politician in particular...there are so many to pick from.

Jul 29, 10 - 07:13 pm Comment from: pcharles

9.75 minutes of the 10 were spent waiting for Windows to complete it's updates on the terminal server.

Windows is not made for touch. iOS made for touch from the begining. Very simple. Windows won't function well on a "slate". Product will not do well. Very simple

@drackmere great comment

MDN, its like shooting fish in a barrel, I'm not sure if Ballmer is the real life version of Forrest Gump, or just a plant to kill MS.

But I may buy MS stock just to be able to vote to keep him in charge.

Jul 29, 10 - 10:11 pm Comment from: Nate

I've been at a lot of meetings where it takes more than 10 minutes for the Windows laptop to talk to the projector.

Ballmer, stop mocking the competition when you don't even have your own product to compare. MS just doesn't get it. It's trying to put it's square OS into a round hole of a tablet. The brilliance of the ipad is that it DIDN'T use MacOSX. MS just can't get over that it has to redesign it's OS for tablets. MS just can't stop eating it's own dog food.

Jul 29, 10 - 10:31 pm Comment from: Carlos from Bogota

MDN Take "What mind?" OMG i havent laugh so hard for a very long time. That was excellent!!

Jul 29, 10 - 11:26 pm Comment from: Dag

*slaps forehead*
If you had been serious about Courier, you mighta had a chance. Instead, you junk it in favor of second party hardware with an OS that wasn't built for the touchscreen.
Dance monkeyboy. Dance in your little corner office as your company falls to the ground around you.

Jul 30, 10 - 01:01 am Comment from: John C. Randolph

Microsoft already spent a decade trying to shoehorn Windows into Tablet PCs. The results sucked. Apple didn't try to chop down the Mac to make a table, they realized that the tablet needed to be something altogether different.

I think J Allerd, or what ever his name, was probably one of the few MS people, that knew what people wanted, and was pretty talented

Jul 30, 10 - 04:56 am Comment from: Derek Currie

Ballmer: "I've been to too many meetings with journalists who spent the first 10 minutes of the meeting setting up iPad to look like a laptop."

This statement qualifies as either an HALLUCINATION or as SENILE. I can't even imagine what he thinks he's talking about. His marketing oriented brain is showing because it's obvious that he has no comprehension of the iPad. I doubt he's ever bothered to work with one, let alone understand how it works.

Either lock the guy up or give him some Aricept!

Jul 30, 10 - 06:01 am Comment from: Emil

@ ILuvMyMacs: LOL! Worst part is that it's probably going to happen. A couple of versions where one might include textrecognition and another with Ballmer's favorite; Reversy (the clock wont' be mentioned in this ad)

Jul 30, 10 - 07:01 am Comment from: Guy Jones

@hot in playa

Agreed. Allard seemed like a guy who possessed genuine creative spirit and a consumer-focused sensibility, both traits uncharacteristic at Microsoft. He was at one time assigned to the Kin project, which resulted in a major clash with another manager who thought that Kin was diverting resources from the Windows Phone 7 project. Basically, from reading articles on this situation, it seems Allard had his legs and arms cut off by this guy -- all over the other manager's ego feeling threatened by Allard -- and that is why Kin was pulled after 8 weeks in market -- Microsoft was undermining the team behind it, internally, before it was ever released.

Hopefully, Allard will find greener pastures elsewhere, like so many who have left the oppressive, self-centered work environment at MS.

Ballmer is a half wit and so full of S&^T it's unreal.
