Apple to unveil Safari extension support at WWDC in early June?
Tuesday, May 25, 2010 - 05:18 PM EDT

invisibleSHIELD case for iPad"Apple may be preparing to update Safari with extension support, Daring Fireball's John Gruber hints," MacNN reports.

"'The other big thing that's missing (compared to both Chrome and Firefox) is a proper extension API,' says the writer. 'If only Apple had an imminent developer conference where they could unveil such a thing,'" MacNN reports. "While such a statement would normally be considered speculation, Gruber often phrases inside information in an insinuating manner."

MacNN reports, "Apple's WWDC 2010 event is scheduled to start June 7th."

We won't be disappointed.

May 25, 10 - 05:27 pm Comment from: Gomer37

So does this mean that Safari will finally support the Flash extension?

May 25, 10 - 05:39 pm Comment from: facto

Please let this rumor be true.

I like Safari (mainly for mobileme bookmark sync etc) but I've always wished you could customize it like Firefox.

May 25, 10 - 05:39 pm Comment from: Tony

Whatever Gruber says, I believe.

May 25, 10 - 05:42 pm Comment from: RicMac

This is 90% likely but won't get a mention at WWDC. In usual fashion it will simply be on a software update.

May 25, 10 - 05:46 pm Comment from: sherman

They need to release a 64 bit iTunes version already. Sheesh, what's the hold up?

May 25, 10 - 05:47 pm Comment from: peter.s.

What´s about a all new version of Safari 5 including features from latest Webkit nightly builds + basic support for WebKit2.
And the most important thing would be fullscreen support for HTML 5 videos in Safari for MacOS as well as in Safari for Windows 32/64.

May 25, 10 - 06:05 pm Comment from: Frobots

Safari and iTunes should be integrated in one program.

"Whatever Gruber says, I believe."

He didn't say anything. It's just a question. In fact, it sounds like he has absolutely nothing to go by, he was just stating that Safari is a friggin' joke compared to Chrome.

May 25, 10 - 06:31 pm Comment from: rick

Actually i just got word that they will be opening up the appletv to developers.

May 25, 10 - 06:52 pm Comment from: macslut

@Frobots,

That's the worst idea I've heard in a very long time, and I just finished a review of the Dell Streak, so there you go.

May 25, 10 - 07:24 pm Comment from: Frobots

Ok, then move iTunes to the cloud. I don't want a separated program just to access a store.

May 25, 10 - 07:42 pm Comment from: zek

Apple doesn't do "a separated program just to access a store."

May 25, 10 - 07:42 pm Comment from: grep|

"You got it MacGruber!"

May 25, 10 - 09:23 pm Comment from: Chris D.

Extensions are useless like titts on a bull.
If you want that crap, go use the FoxFire.

What's your next grand prediction... skins for Safari?

Naw, Safari 5 will be a new kind of experience, only Apple approved sites, no flash, a new feature called JobsScript.

May 25, 10 - 10:24 pm Comment from: kenh

This may sound like a stupid question, but someone give me list of all those extensions that i am apparently missing.

Not intending sarcasm, just asking.

May 25, 10 - 10:57 pm Comment from: GAG

@kenh,

Exactly.

May 26, 10 - 12:08 am Comment from: DaveyJJ

@kenh

OK, I'll bite. Firebug. Much more intuitive than Safari's inspector for us web developer types. But I grant you, beyond that one, there's no other plugin I want.

May 26, 10 - 12:21 am Comment from: Geddy

Ask a Firefox user.

May 26, 10 - 02:53 am Comment from: jimjolise

Hey everyone, apple done it really well.

May 26, 10 - 04:26 am Comment from: JAYGEE

I hope so. My Safari has been playing up recently. It has become slow and unresponsive, even after I clear the history etc. I am thinking of moving to Google Chrome, when it is out of beta.

May 26, 10 - 05:21 am Comment from: JAYGEE

Scratch that. Google Chrome for Mac & Linux came out of beta, so I am texting it for a week, so see how it works.

May 26, 10 - 07:44 am Comment from: Cubert

RicMac,
No. It will be mentioned during the WWDC keynote.

May 26, 10 - 07:51 am Comment from: TigerCliff

The average consumer - the vast majority that Apple targets now in the iPhone space - does not know or care what this is.

It could happen but it's very unlikely. An update to Safari, yes, that'd be good. Apple wants things simple and powerful.

May 26, 10 - 09:22 am Comment from: Mr. Reeee

@jaygee

Run Cocktail or Onyx every couple of weeks to clear out all the accumulated crud.

FireFox Extensions in Safari? Maybe.
It's FireFox UGLY I can't seem to overlook!

May 26, 10 - 09:26 am Comment from: Mr. Reeee

If you want to try a nice iPad browser, check out Atomic Browser.

May 26, 10 - 10:22 am Comment from: MooLatte

Firefox extensions that are invaluable to me:

pera-perakun ( Amazing if you're learning Japanese / Chinese / Korean )
Firebug (Best. Ever)
YSlow ( Good extension )
Adblock ( No Popups/popunders/ ads )
FireCookie ( Cookie manager for Firebug )
Delicious ( If you use it, it's useful )

May 26, 10 - 02:37 pm Comment from: Xan

Firebug vs the WebKit Inspector?

Personally I prefer the WebKit Inspector. Not the version that comes wit Safari mind you, the one that's in the webkit nightlies. The reality is though that they're much of a muchness - they both have essentially the same features, so the difference is mainly just down to the UI.

May 26, 10 - 03:09 pm Comment from: wleddy

@kenh

For me:
adblock
flashblock
noscript
ghostery
session manager
