Casing photos show Apple’s next-gen iPhone to be larger than 3GS?
Tuesday, February 09, 2010 - 11:18 AM EDT

"iPhone repair site iResQ has posted photos of what it claims are parts for the fourth-generation iPhone presumably due for launch later this year," Eric Slivka reports for MacRumors.

"Among the most notable features of the claimed parts are a front panel that appears to be approximately 1/4" taller than the current iPhone 3GS," Slivka reports.

MacRumors' full article is here.

ResQ's post, with more info — including the statement, "We obtained this part as a sample from a reputable source. They have been reputable up to this point, and have provided genuine parts for us in the past." — is here.

It looks like the added length is all bezel?

Feb 09, 10 - 12:35 pm Comment from: Zack

Not a bigger iPhone, a smaller iPad. Sorry, couldn't resist smile. I hope that the added height means a slimmer body.

2 way camera beneath reflective surface?

Feb 09, 10 - 12:45 pm Comment from: TomL

There has to be a reason, like some added feature or more efficient antenna that needs more space.

Feb 09, 10 - 12:45 pm Comment from: jtc

I could care less if its slimmer or not... added height should mean front facing video.. what else would they do with it? Reflective surface seems kinda odd to me but those are used for taking pictures.. so shall we all assume front facing camera now?

Hope a larger screen and slimmer body

"It looks like the added length is all bezel"

as though there is nothing but empty space behind the increased bezel size.

Feb 09, 10 - 12:52 pm Comment from: Dotar Sojat

It's got to be a front-facing camera. What else would that little extra notch above the earpiece be for?

Feb 09, 10 - 12:59 pm Comment from: qka

More battery!

Feb 09, 10 - 01:00 pm Comment from: ElderNorm

Note screen appears to be same size, just shifted up some.

Just a thought.

It's all extra battery.

Feb 09, 10 - 01:03 pm Comment from: M.X.N.T.4.1.

Could just be the case for a knockoff

Feb 09, 10 - 01:12 pm Comment from: KenC

Screensize is the same. Larger bezel could allow for either a slimmer body, or a larger battery, or allow for more componentry inside like a forward camera or CDMA radio.

Feb 09, 10 - 01:34 pm Comment from: spyinthesky

Was rather hoping that they would be reducing the bezel soon especially as some alternatives are beginning to match or come inside the present size. Seems odd unless an iPhone nano is in the works. Otherwise so much for the progress of minimalization.

Extra cooling for the A4.

Feb 09, 10 - 01:43 pm Comment from: Mark S.

I'll let my contract run out on my second gen, get a new one and give the old one to my little wife.
Inside the Otterbox case it's as good as new!

Feb 09, 10 - 02:04 pm Comment from: madgunde

Could just be that the new design is doing away with the chrome trim and just stretching the glass surface to the outer edges of the device.

Feb 09, 10 - 02:23 pm Comment from: troubadour

no -fake - they are not making it larger by a quarter inch - ridiculous

Feb 09, 10 - 02:26 pm Comment from: Sarasota

I like the camera idea already discussed.

Feb 09, 10 - 02:32 pm Comment from: MidWest Mac

Steve Jobs keynote circa June: "So, we've added a front facing camera, a new custom A4 chip that absolutely screams, and it is insanely thin. It's our best iPhone ever."

I can almost hear him saying the words.

Feb 09, 10 - 02:34 pm Comment from: Anim8me2

OK, wait.
ResQ is a repair site. They have to get their parts from Apple.
So what is the likelihood that Apple is shipping repair parts for a product it is not actively shipping?

How can you know there's "empty space behind the bezel"???

I highly doubt they are specifically increases the phone's overall size... just to include "more empty space".

Did you ever open up an iPhone... it is PACKED with components. No wasted space anywhere.

Feb 09, 10 - 03:00 pm Comment from: Jill

I'm hoping the next iPhone has at least 1 of these.
Which would you like to see?

A front lens.
Two lens... front and back.
A switch that flips a tiny mirror than faces the lens front or back.
A pivoting lens that rotates 180 for front/back/middle.

The last idea has all kinds of possibilities:
Take pictures/video just by setting the iphone into any stand, or even laying flat on a desk... with the lens pivoted up towards your face.
(No need to try to hold your camera steady... and arms length... during a 30 mins video-chat.)

Two words: Flux Capacitor

Feb 09, 10 - 04:59 pm Comment from: PR

@Anim8me2

Actually pretty good. They already shipped the repair parts for the iPad...that's pretty well documented. Keep in mind that SOME idiot will drop his phone the DAY he gets it. The repair places have to be stocked and ready to go (and trained if necessary) BEFORE day one.
