The story everyone missed last week: Doesn’t Steve Jobs look healthier? (with photos)
Wednesday, February 03, 2010 - 11:30 AM EDT

By Frank Cioffi, founder and editor of Apple Investor News

Given the massive 2008-2009 press coverage of the Steve Jobs illness story, it’s interesting that very few journalists or bloggers noticed that Apple’s CEO appeared much healthier at last week’s iPad announcement.

It was clear, at least to me, that he’s gained some weight. Not a lot, but noticeable.

Take a look at Steve from a still frame shot of last Wednesday’s iPad event compared to a similarly-framed still shot from the September, 2009 iPod event (both frames were pulled from Apple’s own Quicktime videos). It certainly appears he’s put on some pounds.

He had previously mentioned he needed to gain some weight and it seems that he’s succeeding. He also appears to have a more robust skin tone, though that’s hard to trust given variations in stage lighting between the two events.

This is really a testament to Steve’s ability to engage an audience. We were all so fixated on the iPad that we didn’t look very closely at him.

Did anyone attending the iPad event notice Steve’s weight gain?

Right ON!!!

Feb 03, 10 - 12:33 pm Comment from: Steve516

I think he looks slightly better, but then I didn't think he looked bad last time. I really hate all this attention to his health that distracts from what is really going on. Obviously we all care that he is healthy and recovering, but sheesh...

Feb 03, 10 - 12:33 pm Comment from: Bloo

Steve is getting fat on the tears of Apple's competitors!

Feb 03, 10 - 12:35 pm Comment from: Just me

And he still has the three reality distortion field emitters on his forehead.

Feb 03, 10 - 12:36 pm Comment from: Monger

That's iPadding.

Feb 03, 10 - 12:37 pm Comment from: Wrong Again

I, too, noticed a lack of "Steve looks great" news. Just goes to show, bad news gets reported (and travels) more.

Feb 03, 10 - 12:37 pm Comment from: ron

No - just a different filter.

Feb 03, 10 - 12:38 pm Comment from: auren

He looked and sounded much more robust than last year, more like his old self

Feb 03, 10 - 12:38 pm Comment from: Gabriel

"Frank Cioffi"? My MST3K-trained eyes initially misread that as "Frank Conniff", which left me wondering when TV's Frank began investing in Apple...

You really are a sour puss aren't you?

Feb 03, 10 - 12:39 pm Comment from: hairbo

It was actually the first thing I noticed when he walked out on stage. Last time he was in public, he looked positively skeletal. Now, he looks thin, but not frighteningly so. His doctors will probably tell him he needs to add another 15-20 pounds.

Feb 03, 10 - 12:40 pm Comment from: MATTR

I noticed he was looking better. I even wrote about it!

Feb 03, 10 - 12:44 pm Comment from: Fred Mertz

MATTR,

In addition to writing that Jobs looked much better, you also wrote, "So you ever have dreams of your new pancreas’s original landlord? I heard that can happen. If so, are they about eating sugar?"

Steve Jobs got a new liver, not a new pancreas.

Feb 03, 10 - 12:48 pm Comment from: iMaki

He seemed about the same to me! He needs to can that veg diet and pound some calories! No way he's over 120 lbs! Long live the King!

Feb 03, 10 - 12:49 pm Comment from: TheMacAdvocate

@Fred
I give you credit for even clicking through and reading it. Bet you regret that.

Feb 03, 10 - 12:50 pm Comment from: pablo

Was talking with my business partner last night, told him it is still not too late to buy Apple at a good price. Told him that a healthy Steve Jobs is worth half of Apple's current price.

Feb 03, 10 - 12:51 pm Comment from: Buster

Bullcrap...Steve's appearance was the FIRST thing I noticed. I am sure a lot of others did too (i.e. Mac fans who aren't technical writers or analysts).

I also don't think the 2 MDN pictures truly show the difference.

Feb 03, 10 - 12:54 pm Comment from: R2

Journalists don't care about positive news regarding his health.

Now if he looked even thinner than he did before, they would've been allll over it.

Feb 03, 10 - 12:55 pm Comment from: Kevin J. Weise

@Fred Mertz,

Technically, you are correct as that is what was reported in the press. However, my source (my pre-med wife) tells me its possible he got both organs as a result of the transplant.

Of course, I really don't know. Perhaps only Steve and his doctor know for sure.

Feb 03, 10 - 01:13 pm Comment from: MizuInOz

My reaction was that Steve Jobs' "puffiness" is from his body's reaction to the anti-rejection meds he is on for his transplant (no matter the organ).

I do believe he "looks" healthier. I also HOPE that he stays healthy for a long time. I like the shift the company is making. More team less ego (at least on stage).

Cheers.

Feb 03, 10 - 01:20 pm Comment from: Billy Bob Gaits

He may look healthier, but I think all the medicine he's taking is affecting his brain given the debacle he's caused in the ebook market.

Feb 03, 10 - 01:24 pm Comment from: Trvth

If Apple can supply Jobs with a private jet, why can't it afford to give him a disposable razor?

Feb 03, 10 - 01:27 pm Comment from: Tomball

Healthier, not healthy

Feb 03, 10 - 01:33 pm Comment from: Macaday

Steve Jobs is happy that the focus was on the product and not on him...

Feb 03, 10 - 01:36 pm Comment from: PR

Didn't anyone notice his HAIR is DARKER?

If you look closely it's not the lighting or the relative color difference.
I think they purposely darkened his hair. It makes him look younger and conveys a sense of vibrancy and health. It's likely subtle in real life but under bright lights you can clearly see his hair (what's left of it) is darker. To be certain we'd need to see more photos and match the color profiles of the images but it's pretty plain.

Feb 03, 10 - 01:37 pm Comment from: MATTR

@Fred Mertz

That was kind of the point. wink

That particular blog of mine is purposefully factually incorrect. Hell half of the letters I write for it are complete BS

Feb 03, 10 - 01:41 pm Comment from: darknite

Sorry, but looking healthier doesn't create a traffic generating headline, nor does it allow day traders and shorts to drive down stock prices the their advantage.

Cynical, but so true

Feb 03, 10 - 01:56 pm Comment from: Roy

Theory: No-one noticed steve's health because Tim Cook and Team already showed that Apple is not entirely dependant on him for it's survival anymore smile

Feb 03, 10 - 02:00 pm Comment from: Petey

Steve looks snappier!

Feb 03, 10 - 02:01 pm Comment from: daugav369pils

'...story EVERYONE missed last week...'

Not true. 1-2pm time slot on Fox Business Network on cable
was exclusively devoted to Jobs' live presentation of the iPad.
The hosts commented that Jobs looked a lot healthier and
seemed to have gained weight.

Feb 03, 10 - 02:13 pm Comment from: He looks downright portly

compared to the iPad he was holding!

Feb 03, 10 - 02:19 pm Comment from: Cubert

I noticed - first thing as a matter of fact. That's just the doctor in me coming out.

Feb 03, 10 - 02:21 pm Comment from: Cubert

@Monger,
LOL

Feb 03, 10 - 02:36 pm Comment from: Mac4lfe

I just want steve to start eating some nice Salmon with all the omega 3 fatty acids and whey protein shakes. Then I would get him in the gym and make him lift weights to bulk up and get a rocking six pack.

Rock on Steve Jobs. Please hurry with the availability of the iPad. smile

Feb 03, 10 - 03:55 pm Comment from: leodavinci

I thought he still looked rather thin, but it's obvious from the MDN pics that he's looking better.

@PR, lol, yes, it does look like his hair isn't as grey as before, and before jumping to any conclusions, this could very well be due to improved health, not hair coloring. I doubt Jobs would do that.

Feb 03, 10 - 03:56 pm Comment from: NYPunk88

Hail to the King baby! - Randy Savage

Feb 03, 10 - 04:32 pm Comment from: alansky

I think he still looks really thin; but as long as he keeps on ticking, he can look any way he wants to.

Feb 03, 10 - 04:35 pm Comment from: Macromancer

It was actually the first thing I noticed.

Feb 03, 10 - 04:45 pm Comment from: qka

It's the ice cream.

Feb 03, 10 - 05:28 pm Comment from: Greg L

Less gray hair too. Do I have to get a liver transplant to do that?

Feb 03, 10 - 05:48 pm Comment from: ken1w

He did look much better, and his voice also sounded better than the last time. It was the first thing I noticed. I thought he was back to his old form, RDF and all...

Feb 03, 10 - 05:48 pm Comment from: Batguano

Actually, that was the first think I noticed. I don't think he's gained much weight, but he does look a bit healthier. I think his hair looked more gray before because it was a bit longer--it's the way the light hits it.

Feb 03, 10 - 08:56 pm Comment from: MacRaven

I'm not very religious, but I can't pray enough for Steve to stay alive and healthy. He has brought the world so much. I had serious fears that "Only the good die young." was going to come true again.

Glad he is still here to amaze us. Bless you a million times Steve. Live long and prosper.

Feb 03, 10 - 10:48 pm Comment from: Jeeve Stobs

+100 to what Mac Raven said.

Feb 03, 10 - 11:16 pm Comment from: mike

a) I f****ing LOL'd at "iPadding"

b) He really hasn't gained THAT much weight. Steve should try beer as a weight gain alternative. Beer, McDonalds, and you know...all the stuff the rest of the country is eating.

Feb 03, 10 - 11:48 pm Comment from: Apple Cider

must be all the ice cream

Feb 04, 10 - 02:30 am Comment from: justme2

Heck, Jobs can just hit the chips & guacamole...he'll stay vegetarian & avocados have the "healthy" fats...

Feb 04, 10 - 02:50 am Comment from: Steven

I did notice. In fact, the first thing I said to myself when I pulled up the video was, "Steve's looking better." His voice did not sound as frail, either.

Feb 04, 10 - 04:48 am Comment from: vsp

Mac haters also notice Steve Jobs' health improvement and so have no bullets to shoot at him from this angle; instead they attack the iPad with all the vitriol at their disposal.
