Sophos: Microsoft’s Windows 7ista vulnerable to 80 percent of PC viruses tested
Tuesday, November 03, 2009 - 03:59 PM EDT

"According to one leading security research lab, Windows 7 is vulnerable to an astonishing 8 out of 10 viruses it was exposed to during testing," Davey Winder reports for IT PRO.

"Sophos loaded a retail release copy of Windows 7 onto a clean PC, configured it to the system default as far as the User Account Control process was concerned, and failed to install any anti-virus software. OK, so this might be a little unfair you would think, but it does represent the actions of many a person new to the new OS. Microsoft insists it is the most secure version of Windows yet, and ‘ordinary users’ will take the company at its word," Winder reports.

Then Sophos "'grabbed the next 10 unique samples that arrived in the SophosLabs feed to see how well the newer, more secure version of Windows and UAC held up' says researcher Chet Wisniewski," Winder reports. "Unsurprisingly, Windows 7 didn’t do too well in fighting off these new threats. Indeed, it only managed to prevent 2 out of those 10 from operating correctly."

Who knew?

Glory be. Imagine that. Who wudda thunk.

The flop that is 7 is only the tip of the iceberg. Around January, all eyes will be on Apple and how should the ordinary home user get rid of the ball and chain that Windows is.

I'm a die-hard Mac user but that headline is pretty misleading.

Now you W7 folks need to update your antivirus, anti-malware, anti-adware, etc. And you will still face problems as new bad stuff gets created. Have fun.

After my 1996 PowerMac HDD died after many years of faithful service and I decided that it was finally time to move on, I used a *free*, hand-me-down, circa-2000 Dell for a couple of years before springing for a new iMac in 2007. I found bad stuff on the Dell every time that I checked (which was frequently).

*The Dell wasn't worth free.* I was always concerned about clicking a bad link. Now I laugh at pop-up browser windows that tell me I have a Windows virus or start trying to install an .exe. Life is good again.

My 24" iMac is wonderful, benefits the entire family, and embodies tremendous value, even more so after upgrading to SL for a mere $30.

Windows 7 was MY idea. LOL!

Nov 03, 09 - 05:19 pm Comment from: ken1w

Ten is not a very good sampling to claim that Windows 7 is vulnerable to "80%" of existing viruses. However, the fact that it was vulnerable to even ONE out of ten make Mac OS X far (infinitely) superior in terms of security.

Windows 7 = Aero 2.0.

Likely to be overheard at the next Microsoft board meeting....

"My name is Steve Ballmer, and Windows 7 was definitely not my idea..."

W7 sleeps around.

@ Tank

Out of the first 10 they tried, Win 7 only blocked 2. This is just more of the same from Mimeosoft. I just don't understand why people put up with this. The upfront cost of a Mac pales in comparison to the long term cost and time associated with Windows.

Of course, these security companies are the ones that also perpetuate a lot of myths about OS X.

Still, 8 out of 10? That can't be faked.

It also represents the actions of many a Mac person! cool smile

But it is the most secure version of Windows. It did stop two that would get through with Vista.

Nov 03, 09 - 05:50 pm Comment from: Troy

8 out of 10, and 10 out of 10 with "XP mode", yeah, those microsoft guys are a genius in virus compatibility.

Comment from the original story:

"We use a Linux LiveCD such as Ubuntu 9.10 to connect to the Internet and download all the protections that Windows requires to a clean flash drive, then bring up the Windows PC off-line and load it up. Only after it’s well-armored do we allow it to connect to the network."

Sophos, keeping the sheeple in the pen. It matters not how secure m$ makes Windows, AV companies will continue to thrive.

Nov 03, 09 - 06:34 pm Comment from: 3rdKidney

2 out of 10 doesn't mean M$ was lying about it being the safest MS os ever. Maybe Vista and XP would have gotten 0 out of 10.

Nov 03, 09 - 06:35 pm Comment from: Jon

Looks like they finally got those Vista software compatibility issues resolved in 7.

That just proves what Ballmer said.

Windows 7 is just Vista without the annoying security prompts and with the needed hardware drivers.

Nov 04, 09 - 01:06 am Comment from: AppleJack

For the life of me, I can't understand why there hasn't been a class action lawsuit over these vulnerabilities, and Microsofts' lack of action to prevent, or even repair these problems.

And aren't virtually all the spam-bots in the entire world running MS software?

Who's minding the store?

Nov 04, 09 - 06:17 am Comment from: The other guy.

I assume you're all aware that OSX is the easiest OS to hack? Whereas vista and 7 both address the vulnerability OSX has?

And most new pcs come with antivirus installed.... and the only virus i ever had, i got because of a fileshare with a mac.

Apple are fully aware that their own OS and marketing strategy enables virus's to spread to windows machines from unportected macs. They even have a recommendation that if you're interacting with other windows machines that you have antivirus installed.

I've said it before and i'll say it again, People with any form of common sense can use windows with no issues. People with no common sense prefer macs. Because they think they can be as dumb as they want on the internet and not worry.

Nov 04, 09 - 11:51 am Comment from: the other idiot

troll troll troll troll alarm.....

idiot alert idiot alert...

if os x is soo easy to hack, why aren't more people doing it..

THE ONLY way to get a virus from a mac is to run the executable. It sure as hell isn't going to execute from the os x machine..so it comes back to stupid people again... But hey, what do you expect from a windows user..

dumbass
