How to enable ‘Genius Mixes’ in iTunes 9
Wednesday, September 09, 2009 - 07:23 PM EDT

Apple Online StoreOkay, so you've updated to iTunes 9 and, while waiting for Apple to finally get around to posting the QuickTime replay of today's special event, you've been poking around to see what's new.

One of the new things is called "Genius Mixes." This new feature searches your iTunes library, finds songs that go great together, and creates multiple mixes automatically.

These "Genius Mixes," once you have them, are like channels programmed entirely with your music. You'll likely rediscover forgotten favorites and, quite possibly, find some tunes you never even knew you had.

Gee, this all sounds great, but where the hell is it?!

Well, it's actually simple (when Apple servers aren't overloaded like they are right now) to activate the Genius Mix, even if Apple is acting like it's top secret info:

To activate "Genius Mix" in iTunes 9, select “Update Genius" under iTunes' "Store" menu.

That's it, provided that Apple's overloaded servers don't keep spitting back the following:

Good luck getting through!

[Thanks to MacDailyNews Readers too numerous to mention individually for asking us how the heck to get to "Genius Mixes."]

Not very snappy... confused

Sep 09, 09 - 08:01 pm Comment from: macaholic

OK, not having seen the Stevenote, how is this genius different than the version i iTunes 8?

Sep 09, 09 - 08:15 pm Comment from: coolfactor

For those wondering how this Genius might be different... it's not. It's just a different application of the same technology. Rather than one Genius playlist, you get 12!

I thought it was a gimmick at first, but I'm actually very impressed by this dead-simple feature.

Sep 09, 09 - 08:22 pm Comment from: Occasional Poster

I hated "Genius" and turned it off. I have tried "Genius Mix" and it is "ok" but not great. While the concept is good, It needs to allow for input from the user, such as don't mix certain genre.

I love classical, rock of all kinds, country, religious, blues, blue grass, jazz, folk, and others, . . . but Genius tends to mix in in areas that "don't". Acky Breaky Heart just doesn't go beside a the "William Tell Overture" or spiritual song even though they may have similar tempos or volume.

"Genius Mix" does do a better job, but still mixes genres that I prefer not to have mixed. INPUT from the user as to which Genre to "Do Not Mix" would be great.

Sep 09, 09 - 08:30 pm Comment from: AllenKids

Yes, it's very simple yet plenty useful and awesome.

I hate Genius at first but using it more and more since, it actually gets better.

Now with this I can imagine one day I can't live without it.

Damn you Apple just when I think I couldn't possibly been sucked more in...

Sep 09, 09 - 09:04 pm Comment from: ken1w

I see that iTunes 9 is still a 32-bit app under Snow Leopard.

I guess it is quite a "bit" of work to transition a code base that started even before Mac OS 9 (with SoundJam MP) to be 64-bit. I suppose there is no pressing need for a consumer app like iTunes to be 64-bit.

I posted this info. in the "Apple realeases iTunes 9" feedback section for the GRANDxADMIRAL.

You're welcome! smile

Sep 09, 09 - 09:33 pm Comment from: Music Lover

For me, there's nothing that can replace the spontaneity of choosing the music I want to listen to on the fly. It changes, by the minute and no computer generated playlist is going to get it right, or sometimes even close.

To me, Genius is a gimmick that does nothing but slow down the computer and generate needless "progress" bars and complexity.

..and don't even get me started on Twitter and all that other crap.

Sep 09, 09 - 09:46 pm Comment from: edward

I have no problem at all. I sync, got genius mix both for itunes, my iphone, ipod. so I don't need to sync specially making playlist everyday. genius now mix all songs automatically. how convenient!

Sep 09, 09 - 10:14 pm Comment from: jonahan

Sadly it's not working at all for me. I get the network error :(

Sep 09, 09 - 10:39 pm Comment from: silverhawk

The sharing feature is very nice. I gave my wife my daughters old Nano. Now she has some music on it.

To Towertone

So-- how the heck do you get the Genius Mixes onto your iPhone or iPod. I love the mixes but haven't been able to drag and drop.....or find any menu option. So what am I missing?? red face

Sep 09, 09 - 11:19 pm Comment from: MrMcLargeHuge

Overloaded servers...come on North Carolina server farm.

Sep 09, 09 - 11:26 pm Comment from: MrMcLargeHuge

@aussiesx4

Once the Genius Mixes are created in iTunes, click on your iPod in the source menu, then click the Music tab. Under Playlists, there is a heading for Genius playlists, and then it lists all 12 of them. You can select them all or pick and choose. Quite nice actually.

Sep 09, 09 - 11:45 pm Comment from: The Other Steve

Okay, how many people clicked on the blue "OK" button in the screenshot of the dialog box above?

Sep 10, 09 - 12:11 am Comment from: Mark

At the rate Apple is going releasing major iTunes versions, in a few years, it'll probably be iTunes 42.

Sep 10, 09 - 03:25 am Comment from: Nick

Those of you that are used to using the shopping cart will find that it has gone - be careful it's too easy to buy things unintentionally, as I have just found out.

Sep 10, 09 - 06:30 am Comment from: Tom Howe

I only get 6 mixes. any ideas?

Sep 10, 09 - 07:45 am Comment from: TowerTone

Tom Howe

I have 12 mixes on my computer.
I have 3500 songs, so it made one for jazz, one for R&B;, two for country, and eight for rock, all different styles.

If your library is not large or diverse, you might not get as many mixes.

When I exported those to my iPhone, I only got nine mixes.
Not sure about that one yet.

Sep 10, 09 - 07:50 am Comment from: Mr. Reeee

I have no use for "genius" mixes. My music collection is far to eclectic and anti-mainstream for it to be of much, if any, use.

I'm not interested in mixing up movements of symphonies, chamber music, song cycles or operas...
Genius, schmenius, that's just plain retarded.

I'll turn it on for a cheap laugh and shut it off again.
(Oh, damn... I got that dialogue box, too!)

The new Home Sharing is fantastic. Now my GF can have all the apps I've bought... not that she'd want many. ;^) But I have a few nature guides and "big" apps like iBird Explorer Pro ($30), StarMap Pro ($20) and OmniFocus ($20) that she may appreciate.

Good move Apple!

@TowerTone... you funny bastard!

Sep 10, 09 - 08:13 am Comment from: jonahan

Seems to be working this morning!

Shouldn't be "TowerTone you funny bustard"?

BTW: really liking the new iTunes. Much quicker / better looking.

Exactly what I needed to know! Worked perfectly. Thanks, MacDailyNews.

I got six Alternative & Punk Mixes, four Rock mixes, a Techno mix, and a Soundtrack mix. I guess my library is fairly homogeneous at the moment. : )

And yes, I totally tried to click the dialog box graphic above. Hah!

Sep 10, 09 - 12:25 pm Comment from: LordRobin

Weird... Following the procedure worked for me, but not for my wife. And she didn't get that message; the Genius Mixes just never popped up. I'll have her try it again at some point.

I must be dumb.....I get all the mixes (12 from my 7500 songs) but I can't find out how to get them to my iPods. My own Genius playlists come across but not the Genius mixes. I tried the Music tab in the iTunes synch but while I check 'import all', the Mixes * as opposed to the Playlists) don't show up. When I check the ' slected playlists' again, no sign of the Mixes....while the playlists all show up.

Sep 10, 09 - 08:04 pm Comment from: JapanScott

While progress in iTunes might be a good thing, iTunes9 and esp. the new iTunes Store are working hard to finally put my ol' G4 AGP out to pasture ! The iTs runs very slow on my poor ol` machine, I'll hafta start doing my iTS shopping on my other old machine... a 5ish yr old G4 iBook!

Won't someone take pity on me and update my hardware for me... PLEASE !

aussiesx4

Is it possible that your player doesn't have any room left?
I checked all of mine, and I ended up with a few more gigs of songs.

Did you actually check "Genius Mixes" under 'Playlist' in 'Music while docked? It is right under "Purchased on iPhone"

And also, with iPod chosen on your iPhone, did you check under 'More' at the bottom to see if it was listed there?

My iPhone has a big Genius proton lookin' thingy right at the bottom, next to'Playlist', 'Artist', and 'Songs'.

Sorry if this doesn't help.

Sep 10, 09 - 09:49 pm Comment from: aussiesx4

Towertone

Thanks for the help but not working. Masses os spare storage on iPod and iPhone, and have checked that latest iPod/iPhone software. It is just that the Mixes don't show up, although all my Genius Playlists do. tried unchecking and manually selecting under music but no Genius Mixes. Also have checked on my wifes Mac also, which while having the Mixes on her Mac, won't transfer them to iPod/

Tis a puzzle. Off to the Genius Bar here in Australia at some stage!

Sep 10, 09 - 10:57 pm Comment from: TowerTone

Good luck

(I'm guessing that you have tried updating your Genius again just to be sure)

Sep 11, 09 - 03:18 am Comment from: aussiesx4

Towertone:

Fixed on my iPhone. I just got an update software message to 3.1 and it updated to accomodate Mixes. No luck thus far on my iPods.

Sep 11, 09 - 10:19 am Comment from: TowerTone

I guess I took for granted that you already had that.

Thumbs up!

Sep 16, 09 - 04:48 pm Comment from: Markus

Thank you so much, I thought I was stupid because I watched the genius mixes tutorial and couldn't figure out how to do it!

Sep 21, 09 - 06:47 pm Comment from: Jack

I got the impression from the name that it was Genius CONTINUOUS Mix. Like, making the ends of songs wrap into each other, but intelligently, like a DJ would. When I found out it was no different than putting your library on shuffle, I was extremely disappointed.... I don't see the point of it.

Oct 04, 09 - 09:38 am Comment from: Bibie

Actually how can we activate the Genius Mix???

Nov 13, 09 - 08:10 pm Comment from: swardraws

Genius Mixes were working for me and I loved it but now it is all blank and I can't seem to get it back. iTunes says Genius was updated and such but still nothing on the Genius Mix :-(
