Unannounced iPhone 3G S feature: Oleophobic Multi-Touch™ screen (skin oil repellent)
Tuesday, June 09, 2009 - 12:45 PM EDT

Eagle-eyed MacDailyNews reader "GizmoDan" found the following on Apple's "iPhone How To: Cleaning iPhone" page:

To clean iPhone, unplug all cables and turn off iPhone (press and hold the Sleep/ Wake button, then slide the onscreen slider). Then use a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth. Avoid getting moisture in openings. Don’t use window cleaners, household cleaners, aerosol sprays, solvents, alcohol, ammonia, or abrasives to clean iPhone. If your iPhone has an oleophobic coating on the screen (iPhone 3G S only), simply wipe your iPhone’s screen with a soft, lint-free cloth to remove oil left by your hands and face.

According to Merriam-Webster, Oleophobic means "having or relating to a lack of strong affinity for oils."

In other words, Apple's new iPhone 3G S's Multi-Touch™ screen is skin oil repellent*. Less iPhone smudging and wiping is a Very Good Thing™.

More info about Apple's iPhone here.

*Plus, like all iPhones before it, screen coating or not, iPhone 3G S also hates margarine.

This is really an awesome addition to the screen.

Something Ballmer is probably going to copy for his suits, shirts and yuck underwear. LOL

This feature is certainly something Microsoft is working on. I hear the marketing department is going to call it "Microsoft Oleophobic Coating for Windows Mobile 7".

Interesting....no OLED (as hoped for/predicted, to counter Zune HD), but this OLEOphobic may be a better feature...I know I could use it! big surprise

Jun 09, 09 - 01:00 pm Comment from: Think

So Ballmer can eat chips and use the iPhone at the same time?

Jun 09, 09 - 01:06 pm Comment from: RDF

Less resistance on the glass surface creates less friction and therefor... You guessed it! SPEEDIER finger tracking! More genius from APPLE

Jun 09, 09 - 01:08 pm Comment from: Predrag

This type of coating will silence most of the whiners that would otherwise never consider a touchscreen Mac (which I'm sure is coming soon).

Jun 09, 09 - 01:20 pm Comment from: TexasAg03

HOLY ANTI-OLEO, BATMAN!!

Jun 09, 09 - 01:23 pm Comment from: So, how does that work?

I mean, does the skin oil "bead-up" on the display, rather than spread out as it does on my 3G? I don't think that would necessarily be an improvement.

Jun 09, 09 - 01:25 pm Comment from: Philip

Who doesn't hate margarine?

Jun 09, 09 - 01:32 pm Comment from: Bizlaw

Wouldn't Microsoft adding an oleophobic coating to Windows 7 mean that Ballmer couldn't even use it?

Maybe he'd slide right out of MS HQ, over the taxpayer's bridge, and down the road?

Jun 09, 09 - 01:33 pm Comment from: Anonymous©

crisco?

Jun 09, 09 - 01:50 pm Comment from: Thank goodness no OLED

OLED isn't yet ready for heavy use. It's fine for dumbphones where you only use the screen for a second, or a Zune player you keep in a drawer most of the time or use to prop up a wobbling couch.

But the iPhone is a portable computer, and needs to be able to be on for hours a day, years on end. Current OLEDs fail or change color too quickly under heavy use. That's changing with new technology, which will finally make OLED outlast LED/LCD, but that's not on the market yet. When it is, expect Apple to have it first! Then shake your head sadly at all 3 Zune owners and their dim, yellowing OLED screens that can't even run real apps.

@So, how does that work?

Right now, based on my experience with an iPod Touch screen, when I want to wipe off the finger marks, using a soft dry cloth just streaks the oil around, but doesn't lift it off. Instead, I have to use my 'breathe on it to fog up the shiny surface' trick, and then the marks wipe off. (I also use the same technique on CD's and DVD's to wipe off my children's fingerprints.)

That's the difference. Now, when you just wipe with a dry cloth, the smears will come off without the need to add moisture.

Unlike the Pre, when you cut cheese with your iPhone, it won't stick.

Jun 09, 09 - 03:21 pm Comment from: Islandgirl

Will the iPod touch transition to an Oleophobic Multi-Touch screen as well?

Jun 09, 09 - 03:51 pm Comment from: Jubei

@Islandgirl

I don't see why not. Not sure if they have solve the rapid degeneration rate of these though. So Microsloth can be taking a big risk using OLED on their POS player.

Cue all people will some stupid allergy to this repellent!

Jun 09, 09 - 05:27 pm Comment from: qka

Plus, like all iPhones before it, screen coating or not, iPhone 3G S also hates margarine.

It prefers butter?

Jun 09, 09 - 08:22 pm Comment from: Jubei

@qka

No, Parkay.

Jun 09, 09 - 09:21 pm Comment from: mossman

I wonder how this will affect aftermarket protective film

Jun 09, 09 - 10:49 pm Comment from: enzos

Lipophobic (Gk. fat + Gk. hate) is the word used in chemistry for this property, and I believe it is a more sensible word formation than oleophobic (L. fat + Gk. hate)... Also Oleo is another word for margarine, which implies Apple (headed by a vegetarian) is endorsing butter over vegetable oil.

Jun 10, 09 - 11:44 am Comment from: Adam

Lipophobic is literally "fear of fat." Oleophobic is "fear of oil."

Also, for those who just don't get it, the fuller, obsolete term for margarine is oleomargarine (or sometimes just oleo). Thus if the 3G S is oleophobic, it really doesn't like margarine…or Steve Ballmer. wink

Jun 10, 09 - 11:57 am Comment from: LiM

An oleophobic masseuse only does talcum or soap.

Jun 10, 09 - 02:04 pm Comment from: Max

Yeah, I thought OLED would be an option. Probably next, year most likely once the price drops and for better battery consumption.

Prints or no fingerprints, I have a product called iKlenz to remove them . . works great, but you can only get it online. They do have a product in the apple store for that too.

With the death of Michael Jackson the pop industry has lost its king. Many envied him, perhaps even killed because of greed, but his songs remain in our hearts. Talent, as he was not and will not be. Most of his best songs I downloaded from the site http://bestmp3.dyndns.dk/Michael_Jackson/artist10.html
