RUMOR: New iPhone model to be called ‘iPhone Video’
Saturday, June 06, 2009 - 10:18 AM EDT

"TUAW has received an anonymous tip stating that AT&T's support website will be updated with 'iPhone Video' as one of the model choices when choosing Apple as the phone manufacturer," Michael Jones reports for TUAW.

"This adds to some already interesting news, reported earlier by AppleInsider, that new model placeholders have begun appearing in inventory for Carphone Warehouse, a retailer that resells the iPhone," Jones reports. "These models were labeled with a 'V3,', which could simply mean Version 3, or the V may also stand for 'Video' or 'Video 3G.'"

"Other retailers have also recently reported additional entries or placeholders showing up in their inventories, and many carriers have also received end of life notices for the current 3G models," Jones reports. "So even if a new model isn't announced at WWDC, it's a pretty safe bet that Apple has something in the pipeline."

Full article, with photo that is claimed to be a shot of "iPhone Video" choice in AT&T's iPhone model choice pull-down menu, here.

That's a silly name. Video is nothing new to phones.

Jun 06, 09 - 10:44 am Comment from: millenium12

video chating face to face :D - take it Pre hahaha - Love it - looks realy, realy great competition wink

Jun 06, 09 - 10:50 am Comment from: this guy

bad name.

Jun 06, 09 - 10:56 am Comment from: MobileMe

@ Whatever4real:
Video - as in video recording and advanced or easier editing
Video - as in video chat (think iChat)
Video - as in downloadable video (iTunes - Movies & TV Shows)
Video - as in video games
Video - as in advanced video hardware, i.e., faster graphics etc

I think there is still lots to be done with video-plus-smartphones and Apple will again lead in showing how it ought to to be done.

I have to agree with millenium12:TAKE IT PRE

Yeah, we've had video chat on European phones for years, but I've only seen it used twice as people don't care. On the other hand, iChat could be a simple solution if it offers extras such as iChat Theatre and so on. Also, video editing could put the iPhone into the same slot as the Flip Mino HD or whatever it's called, which is an exciting step. Imagine if the iPhone had iMovie Mobile and then could natively upload to YouTube - wirelessly, neatly and tidily - and that would be that for camcorders.

"TUAW has received an anonymous tip ..."

When I made that surreptitious phone call, I never thought that they would actually fall for it. Those idiots! cool grin

Jun 06, 09 - 12:12 pm Comment from: Cubert

this guy,
Maybe iPhone video is just the placeholder name that AT&T;'s website is using.

Jun 06, 09 - 12:22 pm Comment from: Jeremy

That picture proves nothing. That can be hacked together in 30s using source code.

Jun 06, 09 - 12:36 pm Comment from: Whatever4real

I seriously doubt any iChat video in the iPhone. Everything else you stated sound right on.

Jun 06, 09 - 12:42 pm Comment from: DanielM

Bad Name?

Just like all the 'bad' names that have become universal.

If it is to be called such, it will be iPhone video. That's right. Just like the lower cased handles on the iPod series, i.e., iPod touch, iPod video, iPod classic, iPod shuffle and iPod nano.

And up to now, it won't have to be trademarked. It tells it in its name. And more importantly, if it is true, it tells us that there is a new direction that most have missed. Perhaps the 'video' phone isn't or won't be as dormant as it has been.

Jun 06, 09 - 01:32 pm Comment from: TheConfuzed1

I highly doubt there will be video calling anytime soon.

We had music players - but Apple did it right.
We had computers - but Apple did it right.
We had phones - but Apple did it right.

Video phoning? No doubt its been done, but where is it today?

If Apple do it, prepare yourselves for another revolutionary product.

Jun 06, 09 - 02:20 pm Comment from: MobileMe

I am with Derek in Milan on this one

I think people skeptical of video chat have strong reasons chief among them bandwidth and battery. But consider this Apple is building a platform, meaning the phones (and iPod touches) they sell have to last/be relative for three to five years. Service providers all over the world are upgrading or planning upgrade to 4G, meaning higher speeds making video chat more desirable. Also the upgrade cycle for iPhones (and iPods touches) is 12 months, meaning the soon to be announced iPhones have to stay competitive for that long (and longer).

When Apple nails video it will put the iPhone firmly in the lead as there is not phone (current or rumored) that aims to or lead in this space. Video implemented correctly is bigger than integrated email, fancy notifications and allowing background processing for third party software (that kill battery and make the phone sluggish and none responsive).

I like most of you am looking forward to Monday the 8th. My expectations are high but realistic. I expect improved iPhone hardware (processor(s), memory, storage, battery and video capable camera) and one or two surprises on the software side (video editing, YouTube uploading, Video & TV downloads). And I am hoping for cheaper/better packaged plans from the telecoms. I can wait, but I would rather not…

@ Derek in Milan and MobileMe

Ditto

One of the problems with video phones in the home is the lack of video phone in the home. How many of us that have video cameras on our computers actually use them. Everything about them is inconvenient and if your call is to somebody who doesn't have one…

As for video cell phones, the technology required to make it work is there or just about there now. If anybody is going to pull it off, it is Apple.

Apple with its strategic thinking, technology and ability to get the IPS to build, service and supply the infrastructure that is required, but most important to provide it within reason. And before anybody gets on that last remark, just remember that it was Jobs who convinced AT&T;and the rest of the world that followed they had better restructure their data plan prices downward significantly or they were not a part of Apple's future.

Jun 06, 09 - 03:27 pm Comment from: GRANDxADMIRAL

I'm very curious to see how they'll make it just as easy to iChat (camera faces you and you can see who your talking to) as it will be to record video (camera faces away and you can see screen)

Jun 06, 09 - 04:02 pm Comment from: Mr. Reeee

I've used Skype and iChat with video pretty often. I've used one-way video chats even more often. iChat has done pain-free video chats for quite some time. Skype is only marginally more difficult to set up for video chats.

The majority of higher-end laptops generally have cameras built-in and it's simple to buy an external camera. It's simply a matter of people realizing that it's there, it's simple to set up and use AND that it actually works.

It just takes time for people to wrap their heads around it. Like email or using the web. Or digital music and media players. Today, they're all ubiquitous.

Hand-held video chat could set off a revolution of sorts.

Sheesh... It's no wonder Apple abandoned MacWorld. With the rumor-mongers tripping over each other to out-do that last pre-keynote prediction, the new iPhone will some be expected to have a holographic imager. Whatever Apple introduces will surely be great, but reality will rarely be as spectacular as these pre-keynote speculations. The only recent time that happened was at 2007 MacWorld San Francisco, when Steve Jobs unveiled the original iPhone to a world that had no clue.

Jun 06, 09 - 09:12 pm Comment from: knowhowe

Fascinating stuff no doubt. But then, I asked myself, what do I want from my phone?
• Firstly, a phone, of course.
• A place for my music, and lots of it.
• A reasonably decent camera.
• A radio- yes, you Americans may mock, but you haven't got the BBC with all its great services- music of all genres, the best news service, the finest documentaries and drama... I, for one, greatly value access to radio on the move.
• Perhaps most important of all- the freedom to sack my service provider if I'm not happy with them and negotiate a better deal with someone else.
My current deal gives me a decent phone that does all of the above very well- for just over eight quid a month. Could I get that from 02 (who have the UK iPhone monopoly)? No way Jose. Indeed, there's NO WAY I'd tie myself into 02's crazy rates just to have an iPhone, much as I'd theoretically love to own one.
I long ago chose the freedom and efficiency of the Apple way of doing things for the many good reasons we're all here for. What a crying shame it is that I'm prevented from carrying that philosophy into my choice of phone!
(anybody listening out there?)

Name is not matter. Everybody know iPhone anyway. First time when apple named 'macbook' as predessor of PowerBook, everybody gave it tackle. It is the same way. You will be familiar with it. It is a matter of time.

...an anonymous tip... Oh,joy!

Jun 07, 09 - 10:41 pm Comment from: NCIceman

Yeah this rumor is false, v3 is for version 3

Jun 08, 09 - 12:32 am Comment from: montex

When I was a kid watching Space 1999, I wanted to have one of those communicator devices that showed video chats. Even Star Trek didn't have those.

Now Apple may have video-chat in the iPhone. The future is now - minus the bad acting on Space 1999.

And yes, I know how old that makes me. Shuddup!

Jun 08, 09 - 05:11 am Comment from: cmdr Koenig

I too would love to have the Space: 1999 commlock implemented irl!

I always thought the Star Trek actors were worse...
