Can I trade in my current phone?

May 19, 09 - 04:07 pm Comment from: Jimithy

Doesn't sound right. For one, I don't see how putting a "rugged" rubber back on it will make it sleeker. Secondly, they claim you can send video via MMS. No way, the file sizes are too big. Video editing on the device? If it can record videos, I think this will be limited to trimming videos taken by the phone.

May 19, 09 - 04:10 pm Comment from: McIntosh

Rubberized back?? Hell to the no.

May 19, 09 - 04:12 pm Comment from: cptnkirk

If this turns out to be true and I see it as the most likely:

32GB and 16GB to replace current capacities
$199 and $299 price-points to be maintained

This is how Apple will provide 'cheaper' iPhones by raising the bar but keeping the price differential the same. So someone could get the 16GB for $100 less than it costs now. But into the bargain they get all these excellent new features.

One of the ways they have improved the battery life is to use OLED which doesn't require a backlight. Clever!

May 19, 09 - 04:15 pm Comment from: cptnkirk

I think the rubberized back is a great idea. Many of my friends and I have all bought some kind of rubberized shell for our iPhones. Most of us after the inevitable accident where the earphone cord gets caught in something and pulls the iPhone out of our hands. I bought my own iPhone protector the day after this happened. I love this idea.

May 19, 09 - 04:16 pm Comment from: breeze

Apple may deliberately have leaked this info to "one up" Palm's choice of a release date riding the coat tails of WWDC...

Lightning trumps thunder.

May 19, 09 - 04:17 pm Comment from: I CAN HAZ GLOSSY?

I bet the new iPhone looks like the new MacBook Pros and iMacs, with the sharp edged black glass edges.

I think a rubberized back will be great.

Illuminated Apple logo would be good, it will give the assassins somewhere to aim when they are trying to snipe me.

May 19, 09 - 04:18 pm Comment from: Willie G

Two things are wring with this prediction. The first is a "Rubber-tread backing" This from an aesthetic standpoint is very un-Apple. Maybe, MAYBE a rubber coated back, but certainly not with tread.

Second, as dope as a backlit logo would look, I cannot imagine them adding something purely for looks that only serves to take power from the battery.

I call BS

May 19, 09 - 04:21 pm Comment from: Grrrilla

Ooh, ooh! What if the backlit logo is actually the flash?

May 19, 09 - 04:23 pm Comment from: trottier

Could the apple logo be a flash?

May 19, 09 - 04:24 pm Comment from: jaundiced

Well, if I get one, the very first thing I'll do is get something, anything, to hide the logo. Jeez, how tacky. That's the sort of thing you'd expect on a Zune.

May 19, 09 - 04:26 pm Comment from: iamdj

"Sleeker design"?

LOLOLOLOL.... sorry, that was so funny.

'cause the last design was NOT sleek?

May 19, 09 - 04:26 pm Comment from: trottier

Grrrilla ... beat me by that much wink

May 19, 09 - 04:29 pm Comment from: Noodle-Armed Choir Boy

No lit Apple logo.

Instead, blue or pink neon string lights illuminating the road from the undercarriage.

Model name: "Tokyo Drift".
Comes with a standard, over-amped battery, plus a nitro booster option.

May 19, 09 - 04:33 pm Comment from: iStepchild

What if the rubberized back could come off and it and the battery could be replaced? Rubber would feel much less droppable in your hand and absorb a little shock if it was dropped...makes sense to me...possibly colored rubber via 3rd party makers...yet another accessory million dollar business?
The front needs to be beautiful...the back needs to be efficient...the logo will draw the attention away from the uglier rubber. The lighted logo is a walking mobile advertisement like no other.

May 19, 09 - 04:36 pm Comment from: Olternaut

There is no way the new handheld will have a rubber back. No way no how.

May 19, 09 - 04:48 pm Comment from: Fitz

90% of iPhone owners have a protective case that would cover up this light-up logo - so having it seems useless unless this "rubberized" siding provides very good protection with drops and falls.

PLUS, when you hold the iPhone, your hand covers up 75% of the entire back. What good would a light-up logo be? Neat idea, but wasted.

May 19, 09 - 04:50 pm Comment from: Mac-nugget

@Jimithy
Believe it or not, I edited clips on a Sony Ericson back in the day. I could insert the clip anywhere, I had transitions and all. Sure the video quality was crap, but the capability of hobbling it up together is been around. If Sony Ecricosn can do it 2003/4, Apple can do it in a much better and elegant way 2009.

May 19, 09 - 04:58 pm Comment from: Follower

Grrrilla and trottier - Nice, elegant idea...

May 19, 09 - 05:14 pm Comment from: Biplaner

this info posted previously seems more likely and more reliable (though it does jive with this new info I guess):

http://www.derekunderwood.com/general-computer/details-regarding-new-iphone-and-ipod-touch/

what about running multiple apps at once? I would like to see internet surfing enabled over edge when talking on the phone as currently you have to be on 3G which i leave turned off to save battery life

May 19, 09 - 05:28 pm Comment from: R2

By "rubber tread," they might mean soft-touch paint. You can find it on a lot of Motorola phones.

May 19, 09 - 05:59 pm Comment from: TurbineSeaplane

PLEASE put some soft touch grippy paint on the back...

Make it like the old Moto Pebl. That thing was ALWAYS in your hand firmly thanks to the surface treatment.

Seriously. The plastic looks good for about a week, after which its just a slippery mess.

May 19, 09 - 06:04 pm Comment from: Cubert

Willie G,
The Apple logo on the back would be lit by the iPhone's screen just like it is on a laptop, no extra power used, hence no battery drain.

May 19, 09 - 06:06 pm Comment from: DogGone

32 GB sounds good to me. Bring it on. BTW if the capacity does increase and the price is the same then the Pre will have half the capacity for the same price of the 16GB iPhone.

MW "years" as the competitors are years away from catching up with Apple.

May 19, 09 - 06:39 pm Comment from: random iPhone user

No way in hell Apple puts a rubber 'tread' backing on the iPhone.

May 19, 09 - 07:09 pm Comment from: Sir Gill Bates

Noodle-Armed Choir Boy,

I'd like one of the laser autographed 'Vin Diesel' editions.

May 19, 09 - 07:10 pm Comment from: R2

I doubt Apple would put what amounts to something that feels like a tire on the back of the phone but soft-touch paint, like I mentioned before, would be a welcome improvement. If my iPhone had a soft-touch paint backing, it would've saved me from dropping it about 200 times. As another poster said, it would be like the Motorola PEBL.

May 19, 09 - 07:14 pm Comment from: caMeLtOad

On iCal day, no way?!

Go Apple!

May 19, 09 - 07:55 pm Comment from: alsoran

The rubber tread is 'deployable'. The device has a sudden motion detector. If you drop the phone the rubber tread will instantly pop out and cover the iPhone much like the rubber bag assembly around the Mars rover space missions. They allow the space craft to bounce and roll but do no harn to the contents.

I have this on a very good source, my highly superb instinctive imagination. In my mind it has never been wrong!

May 19, 09 - 08:34 pm Comment from: Spark

"90% of iPhone owners have a protective case that would cover up this light-up logo "

FYI -- Very many "cases" for the iPhone already have an opening to expose the Apple logo. Very common.

May 19, 09 - 08:50 pm Comment from: cwa107

He forgot one:

* It will also have buttons that will eject small sharks with frickin' lasers on their heads.

What a crock...

May 19, 09 - 09:21 pm Comment from: alsoran

Cubert,.

If the logo was lit the same as on a laptop Mac then there would have to be no electronic components between the screen and the back of the case. That is easily doable on the laptop, not so much so on the iPhone.

May 19, 09 - 09:26 pm Comment from: macman

@Willie G: actually, the rubber backing is very apple. Every hold one of the old black macbooks? I bet the new iphone is the exact same material.

May 19, 09 - 09:47 pm Comment from: iMaki

I like the rubber idea! Damn things are slippery as hell without a rubberized case!

May 19, 09 - 11:55 pm Comment from: OZman

you america dummies,

da rubber is for PROTECTION

not want the women gettn iPhone babies now yae!

you know vibration yae buzzz

May 20, 09 - 01:24 am Comment from: MacSheikh

Uh...what's up with the auto-filled email to friend form below the articles?

Can't you just put a link there for ppl to click IF they want to email to a friend? Much more Mac-ish, me thinks.

May 20, 09 - 02:53 am Comment from: SKY LARK

If it's got rubber, what are the RIM's like?

May 20, 09 - 06:50 am Comment from: Obvious

"I don't see how putting a "rugged" rubber back on it will make it sleeker"

You won't have to put it in a 3rd party case to protect it from the usual wear and tear a phone receives. 90% of iPhones in the world world would be much sleeker without their current survival suits.

May 20, 09 - 09:08 am Comment from: locutus_ix

It will have a carbon fiber body with soft, rubberized coating.

It will have separate blades for wood-carving, scrimshaw and appendectomies.

It will have a compass, gps, and inertial guidance, plus extendable handles in case you lose your canoe paddles in a class 5 rapid.

The Swiss Army folks are quivering.

May 20, 09 - 02:01 pm Comment from: BC Kelly

No No No

The rubber backing will definitely be needed for insulation, etc

Cause the logo will not only light up

It will house the Apple Laser Light Saber v1.0b

And be the sensor input for the Tri-Corder

BC

May 20, 09 - 05:51 pm Comment from: FijiBoy

Hmmm, this is a bit schizophrenic... they claim it will have an OLED screen and then go on to speculate that the logo will be lit by the backlighting of the LCD screen.

OLED screens are not backlit. That's the whole point of them.

Good idea to go with the OLED though. I would really like to see more devices with OLED screens as you'd be able to use them while wearing polarised glasses which render LCD screens virtually unusable.

May 22, 09 - 12:08 pm Comment from: surely

loads of bullshit:

- Discontinuation of the metal band surrounding the edge of the device
BS#1: The metal band is there to protect the edge of the glass surface. Is is needed and will not be carelessly replaced by something else.
- Rubber-tread backing
BS#2: To make it real hard to put the phone in your pocket and take it out again. Sure SJ would enjoy that on a keynote.
- Sleeker design
BS#3: very wise foresight
