20GB Apple iPod mini possible in 2007
Monday, April 04, 2005 - 08:45 AM EST"20GB-capacity 2.5cm-diameter hard drives will be a commercial reality by the end of next year, according to Hitachi Global Storage," Michael Kanellos reports for CNET News. "Hitachi Global Storage will come out with hard drives containing 4.5GB per square centimetre, the company is expected to announce on Monday, and that means 20GB iPod minis. The company is expected to release the denser drives in 2007... The density breakthrough represents a refinement in perpendicular recording... 'We're redesigning the head and disc quite significantly,' said Bill Healy, senior vice-president of product strategy and marketing at Hitachi."
"Competitors Seagate, Toshiba and others are also working on perpendicular-recording drives. While some of the larger companies may make the transition at roughly the same time, some of the smaller companies may fall behind, Healy speculated. 'Major transitions are watershed moments,' he said," Kanellos reports.
