Woz hopes to deploy ‘secret weapon’ on ‘Dancing with the Stars’
Sunday, February 22, 2009 - 01:40 PM EDT

"Tech icon Steve Wozniak, who co-founded Apple and helped popularize personal computing, is obviously unafraid to try new things.," Gabriel Madway reports for Reuters. "His latest venture is competing in 'Dancing with the Stars,' ABC's reality TV show which returns for an eighth season on March 9."

Madway reports, "Nothing prepared the 58-year-old man, known to many as simply 'the Woz,' for a turn as a competitive dancer. Wozniak had previously turned down an invitation to appear on the prime-time TV show, which drew 19 million U.S. viewers last season, and only relented after a friend pressed him, he told Reuters."

"'We had one day of practice, that one day of practice is the scariest thing of my life ever,' Wozniak said in a phone interview on Friday. 'I was already kind of shaking over nervousness. But I can't learn. It seems like some very, very simple things are very difficult to learn and remember all these things,'" Madway reports. "But Wozniak said he is having a ball practicing with partner Karina Smirnoff. 'I'm getting so sore and tired but I go in there and I work hard,' he said. 'I'm starting to get the feeling that we'll actually pull something off that will look like a dance.'"

Madway reports, "He wouldn't make any predictions about the competition -- which include rapper Lil' Kim, Olympic gymnast Shawn Johnson and former New York Giants linebacker Lawrence Taylor -- but Wozniak may have a secret weapon in his cult-like following in the tech world. A Facebook page and website have already sprung up to rally tech geeks to vote for him. 'If enough hackers care for me ... maybe I'll win the popular vote,' Wozniak said. 'I don't have any ideas that I can be a professional dancer.'"

Yeah! Like a replacement.

If he comes out on a Segway any respect for him that I had (and it is very very little) will be gone.

The poll in the left column needs another selection: "Who gives a rat's ass?"

All you Woz haters are just jealous.

She's hot.

He may have invented my favorite computer, the Apple II, but there is no way I will watch this show. Forget about voting for him.

Feb 22, 09 - 03:45 pm Comment from: Beavertail

Gawd help us. Civilization is on the verge of collapse.

Feb 22, 09 - 03:55 pm Comment from: mAc-warrior

I always cringe when I see promotions for this show on TV. They dub Woz the "Mac Mastermind" when he had very little to do, in actuality, with the Macintosh (or any Macintosh for that matter). Yes, he was basically the reason Apple had anything to sell in the early days, but beyond that his contributions to the Macintosh weren't all that important (if there were any).

Lighten up, have a little fun.
It will get me to tune in, at least for a little bit.
With hundreds of other channels to watch, have fun with what ever you enjoy.

Look, look here... no not at the collapse of western civilization...look at the funny dancing man.

Y U think Obama got elected? To prevent a poverty riot.

I will watch until my cringe-quota is filled. It may only take a few minutes. More power to the Woz, though, 'coz even if I were marginally famous, I would never go on this show. Whatever it is, it takes guts, or total obliviousness. And dudes there'd be no mac without the original Apple.

Feb 22, 09 - 05:46 pm Comment from: Wade

I'm glad the 'weapon' ain't a Segway. He'd kill somebody.

Feb 22, 09 - 06:30 pm Comment from: qka

Fro all the Woz bashers - it shall be interesting to see what the world says of you when you hit 58.

From all I've read, when I heard him speak once, the man has enjoyed his life, doing what he wanted to do. You can't do much better than that. Yes, of course, the money helped. But how many other millionaires went back to college after they made their fortune, or became public school teachers?

(For our Brit and Brit influenced friends, public as in tax supported. Not sure what you call them, since it is my understanding your "public" schools aren't. Feel free t ocorrect me here.)

@ twilightmoon

I wasn't a Woz hater until I saw the picture of her.

Feb 22, 09 - 07:29 pm Comment from: British Mac Head

@qka,
Yeah, in Britain a "Public school" is another word for a private school for those privileged few and obviously a few of the brightest, who get scholarships or partial scholarships get in each year but I guess it's the same in many countries.

The schools that are tax supported (and rich benefactor supported to some extent too) are called either comprehensive schools, city technical colleges or city academies.

If Woz can't handle the stress, there might be a person or two willing to fill in, ya know.

Feb 22, 09 - 08:52 pm Comment from: could be worse

I'm glad the 'weapon' ain't a Segway.

Could be worse. They could bring on Steve Ballmer.

MW: run. Indeed.

Feb 22, 09 - 10:17 pm Comment from: Cog

That shiny pink shirt really brings out his tits and gut in the video. How did they make him so trim in the promo poster? I know photoshop can work magic, but miracles?

Magic Word: Faith

Feb 23, 09 - 12:24 am Comment from: Bob

Woz will be lucky if he doesn't have a stroke.

Feb 23, 09 - 01:31 pm Comment from: Austin

The secret weapon is the Integrated Woz Dancing Machine (IWDM).
