Steve Jobs asks to be left alone; Bloomberg ignores, reports Jobs considering liver transplant
Friday, January 16, 2009 - 04:38 PM EDT

"Apple Inc. Chief Executive Officer Steve Jobs is considering a liver transplant as a result of complications after treatment for pancreatic cancer in 2004, according to people who are monitoring his illness," Connie Guglielmo, John Lauerman and Dina Bass report for Bloomberg.

"Patients with Jobs’s condition can survive for 20 years or more from the time of their original cancer diagnosis, and the surgery often gives good results, said Steven Brower, professor and chairman of surgery at Mercer University School of Medicine in Savannah, Georgia. Brower hasn’t treated Jobs and doesn’t know details of his condition," Guglielmo, Lauerman and Bass report.

MacDailyNews Take: Yet another "doctor" who "hasn’t treated Jobs and doesn’t know details of his condition,' yet has no problem speculating publicly. What happened to ethics? Or compassion? Or decency?

Guglielmo, Lauerman and Bass continue, "In a telephone interview today, Jobs said he won’t comment further on his health. 'Why don’t you guys leave me alone -- why is this important?' Jobs said."

Bloomberg's tasteless trio sure as hell aren't about to do that.

They simply continue picking apart the man's organs, like the vultures they are, in their full article here.

You know, it's just too much . . . even for me.

Jan 16, 09 - 05:44 pm Comment from: Triumph the Insult Comic Dog

Oh, screw it. No it's not . . .

TickleMeElmo, Whoreman and Ass.

Sounds like de speakers at an upcoming Up With Tasteless People convention.

Of course, let's not forget that it took not one but THREE douchebags to concoct this crap.

Hey, I keed, I keed. They're not douchebags.

Jan 16, 09 - 05:44 pm Comment from: Jake

If they keep bugging Steve while he's trying to deal with this issue, he may just resign from Apple to get them off his back. That would be OUR loss more than HIS.
Steve: please stay involved with Apple to the degree you can, and ignore the a**holes.
Thanks!

Jan 16, 09 - 05:45 pm Comment from: Triumph the Insult Comic Dog

Yes they are.

'Why don’t you guys leave me alone -- why is this important?' Jobs said."...
I believe that what's really important is to leave him alone as he asks. He deserves to have a normal mortal life. Why can't he got a flu with out all the world treat him as a conspiracy or fraud?

Jan 16, 09 - 05:46 pm Comment from: Nurse Ratchet

Dr. Paparazzi! Paging Dr. Paparazzi! White courtesy telephone please.

Jan 16, 09 - 05:50 pm Comment from: Stevo

WoW!!!!

All that news about Steve Jobs, looks like the world is coming to its end.....

The guy just took a vacation, I believe he deserves.. don't you?

Jan 16, 09 - 05:53 pm Comment from: Emil

Are you guys insane?
Of course its important!
If Jobs is seriosly ill it WILL effect Apple and the media is trying to figure out if this is the case. I'm not saying it's right, I actually think it's wrong to do so.
But try to think about this from an investor point of view.

I just hope his Steveness gets better and can continue to push Apple to create insanely great products for many years to come!

Jan 16, 09 - 05:55 pm Comment from: Peruchito

someone just kill these idiots already.

Jan 16, 09 - 05:56 pm Comment from: Jeremy

Interestingly, while they are willing to throw idle speculation around by the tonne, they include things like "(Jobs) ... may have had a Whipple procedure." When it's pretty much a fact that he did. Unless you choose death, a whipple procedure of some sort is pretty much the only choice for that type of cancer.

I also find it offensive the way all these articles recently are based on the idea that "his cancer has spread" (to his liver in this case), but not only are there no indications that he even *has* cancer, he has specifically said that it's dietary and *not* cancer. Everyone is just assuming that he is lying through his teeth at this point, but if he is then the company is legally liable.

I just find it hard to believe that anything other than the story we are getting from Apple is true. It's the simplest explanation, it fits the facts, there is no reason at all to doubt it. He has digestive problems because his guts were re-arranged like a crazy quilt a few years ago. Is that so hard to understand?

Jan 16, 09 - 05:57 pm Comment from: Ne14Tennis

Maybe we should send them email in moral support of Steve?

Jan 16, 09 - 05:59 pm Comment from: Peruchito

better yet, if you know these idiots, bury them in a ditch somewhere. alive.

What happened to ethics? Or compassion? Or decency?

I never though i'd say this but I wish all these shameless vultures disaster in their families and may they always be subject to the relentless distasteful and disgraceful same treatment that they dish out.

Jan 16, 09 - 06:02 pm Comment from: Rainer

These so called "doctors" should be thrown out of the medical association and have their license to practice medicine removed!

It's bad enough when somebody is ill - but having the public speculate about it every day... this is so disgusting, so abhorrent.

I think this marks a new low, a remaining black spot on the media.
Think about it, nexttime before you buy one of their print-issues or watch their commercial-interrupted TV-shows.

Jan 16, 09 - 06:02 pm Comment from: MidWest Mac

I guess you know you're really somebody when the whole world cares about your bowel movements.

Jan 16, 09 - 06:05 pm Comment from: Greg M

Price of fame.

Also his health directly affects Apple's stock. He is the one who put his face on Apple. He is the one who has taken almost all of the praise for what Apple has done.

Therefore, shareholders have a right to know about his health since they have a vested interest in him. He brought this on himself.

Jan 16, 09 - 06:06 pm Comment from: Macaday

Anyone else up for the lynching of these journalists?

That'll shut them up.

Jan 16, 09 - 06:08 pm Comment from: breeze

You have wonder if there isn't some one sponsoring this maddness... Someone like Balmer maybe?

Jan 16, 09 - 06:11 pm Comment from: spyinthesky

Funny how doctors aren't able ethically to talk about their own patients health but are perfectly able to speculate about non patients it seems. Strange old World.

Jan 16, 09 - 06:19 pm Comment from: Passerby

Months ago, my reaction to all this was someone should speculate publicly and unceasingly about the health and other private matters of those harassing Mr. Jobs. But it wouldn't work. No one cares about any of these assholes.

Jan 16, 09 - 06:19 pm Comment from: f-Man

i read the article and still dont understand how the douchebag writers can say that SJ is considering a liver transplant. how did they determine this?

Jan 16, 09 - 06:21 pm Comment from: MACBONES

No, no. They're considering transplanting his head onto Ballmer's neck.

Jan 16, 09 - 06:22 pm Comment from: Mac-nugget

In a world where any idiot can get a microphone, and all will listen, you will get a bunch so stupidity broadcasted.

Jan 16, 09 - 06:25 pm Comment from: MCCFR

Anyone else up for the lynching of these journalists?

Sounds like a waste of good rope if you ask me.

One of the truly amazing things about this story is the way it is slowly becoming more ornately layered with imaginary details like a game of Chinese Whispers.

Does anyone on the American side of the pond fancy ringing up a media outlet and trying to convince them that, in testing of the new Apple Matter Transporter, SPJ's DNA has become accidentally intertwined with that of a stick insect.

Jan 16, 09 - 06:37 pm Comment from: DJ

Pukerama - with journos like that, who needs the real story?

Jan 16, 09 - 06:41 pm Comment from: mackle

to the minority who feel it is your right as an investor to know private things about steve job's health: you don't know what you are talking about. as an investor, the board has a legal responsibility to inform you if steve jobs cannot perform his job. that's it dear heart. anything else you want to know is just your morbid curiosity or personal insecurity about your equity position. in that case steve jobs does not need medical attention, you do.

it is in fact illegal for those doctor's treating steve jobs to disclose anything. that's why there is no response to the jackass guesses. he may be very sick, i hope not. he may be exactly as he has disclosed. he also, has no legal imperative to disclose anything. that's is the board's responsibility.

me, i'm just waiting for the quarterly financials to be announced next week. look at apple as a business, not the flag of steve jobs. hopefully, that's why you bought stock.

Jan 16, 09 - 06:50 pm Comment from: CD

People are getting smart to the banks, and people are getting smart to the media. The media has the highest ratings ever since reporting all the countries problems, using words like "meltdown", "tank", and "recession" since at least August.
Naturally, we all go into a preventative hole and ride it out, when instead, if everybody wouldn't be so influenced by the media and spend, the country would quickly get back into shape, and especially AAPL.
The media will ride the negativity wave forever as long as they get the ratings over the TV shows and movies. Just like the banks, the head honchos at the media only think about ratings, not lives. Bail out the banks, but ask a bank to bail you out and see how they act.
Bank of America is soooo tuned in that they can't even get the current Apple logo correct. Greedy Idiots!
I hope credit unions rack up and take people away in droves!

Greg M,

You're wrong, and you're an idiot.

Jan 16, 09 - 07:07 pm Comment from: Fred Mertz

DanielM,

Anyone who writes what you wrote, or a variation thereof, really hasn't thought it through enough to be commenting.

Read some history. Ignoring things doesn't make them go away, it allows them to fester and grow. See: Hitler and about a million other lesser examples.

It's always best to shine a bright spotlight and shout from the rooftops, not turn off the lights, stick your fingers in your ears, and pretend the bad stuff's gone away.

Jan 16, 09 - 07:13 pm Comment from: matt

@ndelc - no, Greg M is NOT wrong, nor an idiot. he's right, but that doesn't mean that these jerks harassing jobs are right either.

steve won't be left alone by bad people because of his status, and shareholders SHOULD be concerned about this issue. however, that doesn't give anyone the right to try prying for more information than he's already given. HOWEVER, people like that aren't going to ask permission or give a shit, are they?

greg m was not being an apologist for these assholes - far as i can tell, he was simply stating an unfortunate fact.

some mac zealots seem so prepubescent in their prescriptions for vitriol. if someone isn't chiming along with your choir note per note, it's "you're an idiot" time. you're every bit as ignorant the windows "sufferers" you tend to deride so eagerly. wake up and face the bitter truth - there are unfortunate consequences to having celebrity status. steve jobs DOES NOT DESERVE this treatment, but it isn't exactly unexpected either. why is that so hard to grasp?

i can only imagine all the "hope he dies" comments that would be flying around this forum if we replaced "jobs" with "ballmer". some of you are absolute scum. loud, obnoxious, infantile scum who would never say anything like that to someone's face.

i won't be back to read your troll barf, so save it.

Jan 16, 09 - 07:16 pm Comment from: blindpig

Of course every one of us on this thread and the site itself are equally responsible for perpetuating the situation. On one hand, this site constantly rags on the journalists who follow this story, and on the other posts every new story that comes up on the topic. If this site really feels that way about the saturation coverage, they should stop being part of the problem.

Investigate the health status/records of every analyst who has participated in this crap, and then speculate publicly about them. Then nail any health care worker who has spilled any confidential information on SJ's health status, treatment, or prognosis.

This is inexcusable and intolerable.

Jan 16, 09 - 07:38 pm Comment from: MacDailyNews Webmaster

We are but a mirror. We reflect what the media are saying about Apple at any given moment. This is what we do. As stated on our Contact page, this is the site's mission:

Our mission is to scour the Web for articles that interest Mac and Apple product users, remark on the content of these articles, provide news about Apple Inc. and their products, and to opine about all things related to Apple and the Mac.

Most importantly, MacDailyNews exists to provide a place for our readers and the Mac community to discuss these daily news items in their own words with real-time feedback.

We are simply reflecting the state of things as they are currently, as we always do. It is not our practice to ignore Apple-related articles or you wouldn't be getting an accurate feel for what's going on with the company at any given time. If we ignored the current feeding frenzy over Jobs' health, we'd be accused of being out-of-touch, callous, from outer space, or virtually anything else you can dream up plus a thousand things you can't (you should see our email).

We understand the frustration that many of you have; we share it as well.

Hopefully, this latest bit of out-of-control frenzy will end sooner than later and Mr. Jobs can finally be left alone as he wishes and given time to get well.

Thank you,

@matt,

No, I wouldn't wish this on Ballmer either. And I couldn't disagree more that this is the "price of fame" as Greg M stated. He didn't ask for this fame. He's the head of a company who leads a very private personal life. He never sought out this type of limelight, and he obviously doesn't want it now. Being the public face of his company does not give reporters the right to treat him this way.

As many others have pointed out, the shareholders should only be concerned about whether or not he can still do his job. As of right now, he is still the CEO of Apple, and he expects to return in July. End of story. Leave the guy alone.

You may now step down off your high horse.

You'd think he was the president will all the speculation.

People are born, they die. The world continues.

Jan 16, 09 - 07:52 pm Comment from: Tommyr

Don't be so quick to jump on the journalists. Apple denied he was sick, then Steve takes a long medical break. IMHO Steve is not well at all based on his break length and appearance. Cancer sucks and I will bet he's not doing well at all.

I'd like to think I'm wrong (and hope to hell I am) and wish him all the best in his fight but folks this is CANCER. Let's be realistic here. I've has numerous cancer deaths in my family over the years. Cancer doctors lie out their ass. They told my mom they got it all and she'd live a long life. 1 1/2 years later I had to bury her. Cancer doctors are full of shit. Pure and simple. Don't believe ANY of them.

Jan 16, 09 - 08:00 pm Comment from: Crabs

@matt

Actually, Steve Jobs has no legal responsibility whatsoever to disclose one iota of information about his health. At all. If the board says he's capable of running the company, and he isn't, then they're legally liable. Steve Jobs is not.

And seeing as he's taking six months off to recuperate, it is absolutely none of anyone's business what happens to him, or how his health fares in that six months.

Once he returns to the company, then it again becomes the board's responsibility to disclose whether or not he's able to handle his duties. And that's it. He could be having a heart, liver, lung, and stomach transplant, and so long as the board sees that he's fit to handle his duties still, you have no right to know about it.

Jan 16, 09 - 08:01 pm Comment from: TimeToSignOff

Instead of links to the authors of these articles, perhaps it would be more useful to have links to the "expert's" hospital or university ethics or development committee. The authors seem to be getting experts from fairly obscure organizations as opposed to leading organizations.

The authors of this type of article benefit by publicizing their sites and articles where numbers of readers mean more revenue. I doubt that Universities and Hospitals would appreciate their staff drawing publicity from having this kind of speculative "expert testimony" attributed to their institutions.

Jan 16, 09 - 08:06 pm Comment from: shizzer

Steve Jobs needs to stop saying leave me alone. Maybe people would leave him alone if he would just come clean. It is NOT a private matter. He is the CEO of a very PUBLIC company. He gave up that privacy when he as CEO handled millions upon millions of investors cash. If he wants to be left alone, then I think he should resign all together. I love Apple and all, but I really think they failed their investors in a big way on this one.

Jan 16, 09 - 08:16 pm Comment from: JohnLee

Everyone needs to strike a balance here. It's obvious why the health of Steve Jobs gets attention. Even Jobs must realize that. When a person achieves success, fame, and fortune, they must accept that they may be in the spotlight at times. It goes with the territory. That doesn't mean they have to like it, but they must know it's coming.

There will continue to be interest in Jobs health, and I think that's natural and okay. Speculation, particularly by doctors who have no personal knowledge of Job's condition should stop though. Unfortunately, the reality is that it won't. It's the world we live in. Our only recourse, including Mr. Jobs himself, is to try to ignore it as much as we can.

Jan 16, 09 - 08:24 pm Comment from: freebeer

Tommyr - I empathize from personal experience - BUT - as the US economy and credit crisis/Ponzi schemes have proved, if nothing else, most of Wall Street and its so-called experts and analysts and reporters can all be very wrong, and their whole system is based on pure personal speculation instead of sound analysis. Therefore, as far as the Market goes, Steve Jobs' health is about as relevant as the chances of Steve Ballmer's plane falling out of the sky. Why don't they set up gambling bets on that?

So, no, these speculators should not be left off the hook. They have not done their jobs for years. Since they are incapable of solving real problems, they think providing ignorant opinions is worthwhile work. It is shocking that this country's productivity and ingenuity is measured by the daily gambling statistics of these headless chickens.

FSCK the investors. Go die, assholes.

Get well Steve.

Jan 16, 09 - 09:19 pm Comment from: NYC Doc

I have been a die hard apple fan and Jobs fan since my first Apple IIe. I currently have 5 macs up and running and many collecting dust. I have never done nor will I ever do windows. I am very long apple stock (and yes have taken a beating recently although apple stock has also been very good to me and enabled me to buy my current home). I'm also a board certified general surgeon and a pancreatic surgeon. Yes, I also know Steve Brower although haven't spoken with him for many years. Brower is a wonderful physician and I'm sure he was only asked a general question about neuroendocrine tumors.

Don't worry, I'm not going to speculate on anyone's health. I do very much wish the media would leave Jobs alone as well. I wish Steve Jobs the very best and I'm confident that he is in great hands and will continue to live a long an prosperous life at Apple (the greatest company in the world).

It's really upsetting to me to see people so confident that they know what's going on in either or both directions. The reality is that we don't know and even if we did, it doesn't mean that we have any idea about how well he will do or how long he will live.

Here is the problem with the public announcements from apple: they generally don't make sense to those of us that deal with clinical medicine on a daily basis. I'm absolutely not saying that they are intentionally misleading. Let me say that again for emphasis: I'm absolutely not saying that they are intentionally misleading. It was just clear to me that non-medical people wrote / spoke the public statements from Apple. It actually may have been better to keep quiet because I found those statements harmful and parts were clearly medically implausible/improbable. What you have are lay people doing the best they can at explaining an extremely complex entity, which is a daunting task.

Even these articles at the bottom of this page are very misleading. For instance, the first one titled "What is Liver Cancer?". Why is this there? Liver cancer is a cancer arising from the liver. If you have colon cancer, for instance, and it spreads to the liver, you do NOT have liver cancer. You have metastatic colon cancer. "How to choose treatment for pancreatic cancer" Your 5 step guide! You're kidding right? Also keep in mind that almost always when people talk about the treatment for pancreatic cancer they are talking about adenocarcinoma not neuroendocrine (extremely rare). Stages of liver cancer??? Once again, why is this there? If its metastatic anything its stage 4 and its not liver cancer.

Ok, I'm done writing because I'm upset.

Reporters, do YOUR jobs and let the doctors do theirs.

"...simply reflecting the state of things as they are ..." currently

Is perhaps, the reason they are what they are.

I'm not denying that Steve Jobs is ill or that that information in itself is not news worthy.

But I contest MDN's promulgation of the nefarious scandalmongers, who are only interested in the financial reward gained by their delinquent attitude to social values.

Sure, no one coerces me visit MDN, I do so of my own free will, and no one coerces me to read any particular link, again, I choose freely.

However this does not mean I should be apathetic or reticent to the self-obsessed ways of contemporary media outlets, as they engaged in an endless cycle of cannibalization, gorging upon themselves, in order to sustain; themselves.

Life, imitating art; art, imitating life it eventually leads to white noise and no one will be the wiser.

Lead the way on this issue MDN, or are "only" interested in the financial reward and hide behind you mission, why not redefine your mission so that it cuts of the oxygen to the bottom feeders.
Step up.
