Pandora: 2 million Apple iPhone clients and counting
Wednesday, December 03, 2008 - 09:47 AM EDT

"Music discovery service Pandora has confirmed two million iPhone users have downloaded and installed its application to date," Jonny Evans reports for Distorted-Loop.

Pandora's founder Tim Westergren said in September that "he was amazed by the application’s growth on the iPhone, which at that time accounted for over a million users. At the time he also said the iPhone had helped double the service’s growth rate," Evans reports.

Evans reports that Westergen wrote on the Pandora Blog yesterday morning, "'It’s thrilling for us to see the broader vision for Pandora take shape. Our hearty thanks for your continued support and input.'"

They're not all iPhone users. I installed it on my iPod Touch, and it's one of my favorite add-ons. I've wondered though how they make money. Is it on payments for iTunes purchases made through the app?

"Ouate de Phoque", best name yet.

From the 'Mutual Admiration Society'.

They seem to make money primarily on ad space. I've noticed that they've added in-line banners that overlay the bottom portion of the album art displayed on the iPhone client. Beck's Beer and BestBuy Mobile are two customers that come to mind. The article also states that they have sold feature space on their blog to Energizer.

So, happily they seem to have found a viable business model for their very good product. I love the service; it has completely eliminated my listening to the radio. Viva la revolucion! grin

What is the bitrate on Pandora's streams anyway?

Dec 03, 08 - 12:42 pm Comment from: macaholic

Too bad it only works in USA.

Dec 03, 08 - 12:46 pm Comment from: Synthmeister

Not sure what the bitrate is, but when I listen at Hight Quality on my Wifi network with M Audio IE30 headphones, ($200 pro headphones) it sounds very, very good.

Pandora on the iPhone 3G (as well as a few other internet radio apps like Tuner) has completely eliminated terrestrial radio from my car. My radio buttons aren't even set to anything. Time to start the Clear Channel and XM/Sirius death watch. Internet Radio is the future of the medium. At this point I can't imagine why anybody would pay a monthly subscription to get a couple hundred satellite radio channels all controlled by one company when they can have hundreds of thousands of internet radio stations from all over the world and breakthrough personalized services like pandora and last.fm for nothing more than their monthly 3G phone bill. I guess they don't know any better...or they have a shit phone.

Or they don't live in the effing United States. There is a world besides them, you know!
Have had sat radio for almost 6 years myself.

@ macaholic

Perhaps a little due diligence would have helped you not make a frigg'n idiot of yourself.

When will you offer Pandora outside of the United States?Q:

Delivery of Pandora is based on proper licensing from the content rights holders - we have always believed strongly in honoring the guidelines as determined by the artists, labels and publishers. In the U.S. there is a federal statute called the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) that provides this license for all the music you hear on Pandora. Unfortunately, there is no equivalent license outside the U.S.

We will be posting updates on our blog (http://blog.pandora.com) regarding our ongoing effort to launch in other countries, so please stay in touch. In all honesty, we don't have the resources to pursue licensing arrangements in many countries in the immediate term, but we do have the ultimate goal of being able to offer our service globally. As always, we welcome your feedback and would love to hear your thoughts and suggestions. We greatly appreciate your understanding and support.

Note: Due to international licensing constraints, we are deeply sorry to say that it is necessary to restrict streaming audio from Pandora for most countries outside of the U.S.

Our vision remains to eventually make Pandora a truly global service, but as a small company, the best chance we have of realizing our dream of Pandora all around the world is to grow as the licensing landscape allows.

I like Pandora, Concert Vault and of course my own music library, which I can stream using Simplify.

and his implying that people who do not do as he does are stupid, or make bad choices. Since the option he loves is not available to most of the world, I guess that makes everyone else in world stupid. And u wonder why people find Americans a pain in the butt!

Hey KenC,

Convert Vault is great. Thank you. Nice iPhone app too.

Ahhh, The Who 1968, we miss Moon.
