‘Boot Camp’ for iPhone 3G: slum it with Windows Mobile on your iPhone?
Monday, October 13, 2008 - 01:27 PM EDT

Zach Epstein reports for The Boy Genius Report of a "brief interview from MyPhone 2008 [September 26-28, Las Vegas, Nevada) with a young Norweigan developer named Erik Kristiansen. While Kristiansen might not be the smoothest talker in Vegas, he has managed to put together quite a piece of software. As he explains in the video, he has essentially created bootcamp [sic] for the iPhone."

Epstein reportsWhen the phone powers on, the user must select between booting OS X and Windows Mobile," Epstein reports.

"Kristiansen is aiming to release his work to the public this coming January and it will be open source. Of course you shouldn’t expect to see this one hit the app store - only jailbroken iPhones need apply," Epstein reports.

[Thanks to MacDailyNews Reader "Fred Mertz" for the heads up.]

MacDailyNews Take: Dude, you got a Dell Treo? What are you, stupid? Only Apple's Macs iPhones run both Mac OS X and Windows!

OS-unlimited (Apple) beats OS-limited (Dell, HP, Toshiba, Sony, Palm, RIM, Nokia, etc.) every damn time.

(And, what odds would you place on Jessica Young and Erik Kristiansen hooking up? After all, what happens in Vegas...)

[UPDATE: 3:35pm EDT: The MyPhone 2008 site from whence this video - and others equally or more implausible - originated looks suspiciously like a sales tool for an app (SonicEmotion) for jailbroken iPhones. This video could be nothing more than a ruse.]

OK.

THIS IS GOING JUST TO FAR.

Some of you smart people do something useful for god's sake!

Someone get this kid some sex.

Oct 13, 08 - 01:32 pm Comment from: damn

this was worth watching for the report alone, she's bangin!!!. She was hinting she was a gold digger asking if he had a gf so she can be the first to slip into his millions that he will get for this program.

Oct 13, 08 - 01:34 pm Comment from: MacUserUK

So wrong on so many levels...
But I have to ask myself 'Why?' It seems more like a challenge than anything else. Who in their right mind will install Windows Mobile on their iPhone? I won't, hell no. But the presenter is right, all the top 'hackers' are from Norway. DVDJon for one...

Oct 13, 08 - 01:36 pm Comment from: theloniousMac

She was asking if he had a GF cause she thinks he's a loser nerd and she wanted to confirm the stereotype.

Oct 13, 08 - 01:36 pm Comment from: Digits McGee

Does it include a fingertip enpointifier? I don't have fine nordic digits. I don't have an iPhone either, but let's not quibble.

Oct 13, 08 - 01:39 pm Comment from: Nick Fury

It's perfect for the PC user that misses getting Windows viruses.

Oct 13, 08 - 01:40 pm Comment from: theloniousMac

She really has an overly inflated sense of the contributions of Norway to technology. They did invent the Aerosol spray and cheese slicer though.

Oct 13, 08 - 01:41 pm Comment from: theloniousMac

Nick,

are there Windows Mobile viruses?

I only remember one from February of this year or so.

Oct 13, 08 - 01:43 pm Comment from: Cubert

This is quite an accomplishment for this developer and I applaud his efforts, however, I hope he doesn't plan on retiring on the money he will get from all 3 people who will buy it.

Oct 13, 08 - 01:45 pm Comment from: Cubert

"And, what odds would you place on Jessica Young and Erik Kristiansen hooking up? After all, what happens in Vegas..."

Or, this guy and the interviewer, Zach Epstein. You never know about those crazy Norwegians.

Oct 13, 08 - 01:49 pm Comment from: Cubert

Ohhh, and who exactly is Jessica Young?

Oct 13, 08 - 01:49 pm Comment from: Nick Fury

"are there Windows Mobile viruses?"

"McAfee said last week that it has detected over 200 mobile viruses and warned that mobile pests are outgrowing those targeting PCs.

Worms for Windows Mobile are still relatively rare, however. The first virus for Microsoft's mobile operating system dates back to July 2004, and a search on Symantec's Security Response website turned up only a handful of viruses for the platform."

There was an application for the jailbroke iPhone to fake a Linux installation. I believe this is the same since the Windows Mobile loads pretty fast. I don't think this is real.

Oct 13, 08 - 01:51 pm Comment from: dimplemonkey

I cracked up out loud when he made his last comment. That was freakin' awesome!!!

Oct 13, 08 - 01:52 pm Comment from: Randian

Now the roving sales clerks at the Apple stores who use Motorola MC75 handhelds running Windows Mobile to ring up orders anywhere in the store can switch to iPhones running Windows Mobile.

Oct 13, 08 - 02:17 pm Comment from: St1

That was one of the best tv i saw this year!! Awesome!!

Oct 13, 08 - 02:21 pm Comment from: JRA

It was only worth watching - because she (Jessica Young) was hot! Never seen her before. I've been missing out.

Oct 13, 08 - 02:23 pm Comment from: Felix

iPhone OS is the best out there. Just like we think about OS 10 on Mac.

But Some people still prefer to use Windows & Windows mobile.

Some Would like to use Windows & Apple which many are in that position.

It's been very convienint for my to have my Intel Core 2 Duo iMac. I can boot up windows when I have too, say If I'm taking a course in College that demands I use a program that requires XP. I hate using it but sometimes I need it.

So Windows Mobile on an iPhone? Bring Bootcamp on. Good for both apple & microsoft. Even though windows mobile sucks, some people prefer or have to use it yet they love the iPhone & Apple's OS @ the same time.

I'm just curious just how well does windows mobile works on the iPhone's touch screen?????

Oct 13, 08 - 02:45 pm Comment from: Finally

Finally freedom from Apple's restrictive app store. Much as being able to run Windows natively on the Mac set the Mac free and brought on a whole new group of customers, this will do the same for the iPhone.

Next someone needs to get Android running on it and Apple will then be able to focus on what it does best, building sexy hardware and leave the writing of software to the pros.

Shit on a super model?

@Finally

You're kidding, right? Hardware was never Apple's forte. Sure, the iPhone's hardware is pretty innovative, but it's the OS and its unprecedented capabilities that make the iPhone the gem that it is.

I can't even fathom why one would want to run Windows Mobile on an iPhone. It would be like buying a Corvette to put a Geo motor in it.

Oct 13, 08 - 05:39 pm Comment from: Javier

The only reason Apple has allowed Windows to run on Macs is that it is the dominating OS in the PC market. In the mobile market it's the underdog of the market. So it makes absolutely nonsense to run this piece of c&&p;on the IPhone.

Oct 14, 08 - 06:58 am Comment from: Best of Both Worlds

"So it makes absolutely nonsense to run this piece of c&&p;on the IPhone."

It's great. you can boot your iPhone in closed mode when you want access to the limited apps that the store provides, then turn around and boot it into Windows when you want access to things like podcast downloading, tethering, flash, java, instant messaging, VOIP, turn by turn GPS navigation, pocket Word and Excel and all those tens of thousands of other applications already written for Windows Mobile, many of which will never end up on the iPhone due to SDK limitations or App store banning.

It really is the best of both worlds.

*SLAP*

Since when does Windows Mobile have the capability to drive the hardware in an iPhone?

U R Stew pid!!

Oct 15, 08 - 02:02 am Comment from: Open OS

"Since when does Windows Mobile have the capability to drive the hardware in an iPhone?"

Presumably since Apple used a standard architecture processor and commonly used 3G chip.

Windows Mobile runs on all sorts of different hardware, now even iPhones. It's a pity Mac OS X is so limited in the hardware it supports..

Various people in all countries get the loan in various creditors, just because it's comfortable and fast.
