MacDailyNews Take: Good Jobs not in heaven!

Okay, so mildly to semi-amusing in spots and yet, still, amazingly, we feel no burning desire, in fact, no desire at all, to dump our superior Macs for crappy low-margin PCs running a bloated, frustrating, upside-down and backwards fake Mac OS called Windows. Call us crazy if you will. The complete lack of rigid churros didn't help (that's what the girl said at the picnic). But, it didn't hurt, either (that's what the guy said at the picnic).

That said, by all means, Microsoft, keep right on wasting millions of dollars and shooting tons of video and buying time/impressions. Don't bother trying to make your products better; spend more on marketing instead.

By the way, how much time is Gates spending on this uncool fiasco? Isn't he supposed to be out papering the world with his ill-gotten gains in a vain attempt to buy his way into heaven?

"...and he believes in heaven-- (not that there's anything wrong with that)"

Sep 11, 08 - 09:09 pm Comment from: Jubei

Just more freaking proof that MS cannot innovate. LOL

Sep 11, 08 - 09:10 pm Comment from: funny

i laughed... but then felt bad about it.

Sep 11, 08 - 09:14 pm Comment from: Scarbro

Sad.

Sep 11, 08 - 09:15 pm Comment from: MacSmiley

I would want Gates & Seinfeld out of MY bedroom, too! LOL

Sep 11, 08 - 09:15 pm Comment from: DMania

Have to admit... I liked it.

Sep 11, 08 - 09:18 pm Comment from: Double Up

Unbelievable how lame and pathetic this is. The MS ship is sinking! With any luck they will double the ad budget and die a quicker death.

Sep 11, 08 - 09:18 pm Comment from: Cascadians

Wow, lame is right!

Sep 11, 08 - 09:22 pm Comment from: Spark

It was certainly more entertaining than the shoe store. But I'll keep my Mac, thanks.

Sep 11, 08 - 09:23 pm Comment from: iPhone 1st gen is better

Not a total waste of time. It was somewhat funny.

Sep 11, 08 - 09:24 pm Comment from: MacSmiley

@ Spark,

Gates was still working on his shoes, did ya notice?

Sep 11, 08 - 09:24 pm Comment from: Micro Me

I gotta agree with MDN. Some parts have a certain je ne sais quoi, but how the hell will it sell PCs?

Sep 11, 08 - 09:24 pm Comment from: MacDoc

What the hell was that! And why! Wait...I'm going out to buy a PC now...finish the comment later

Sep 11, 08 - 09:26 pm Comment from: Turtle-Bear

Can't help it, I laughed. I still enjoy Seinfeld reruns and anytime Bill Gates can laugh at himself. But what this has to do with improving M$'s image or making anyone desire their products, who, on this great Earth, can say?

Sep 11, 08 - 09:26 pm Comment from: Cascadians

Notice how Billy Goat the Thief stole from the delivery guy? All he knows how to do is steal.

Sep 11, 08 - 09:27 pm Comment from: John

Hmmm, well it was better than the last ad.... But WHAT THE HELL does it say about WINDOWS??? I mean this really seemed like a trailer for a new Seinfeld and Gates "buddy" movie.

Seriously, this is NOT going to sell windows boxes. Who couldn't see that?!

Sep 11, 08 - 09:29 pm Comment from: Turtle-Bear

To add:
Watching these "ads" is like watching a train wreck occurring; you can't possibly turn away! I want to see the next one!

Sep 11, 08 - 09:31 pm Comment from: Cascadians

Still has the homoerotic overtones; now they're rooming together, still bending the shoe, probably showering together. This isn't going to appeal to mainstream America. Blech! Will have to wait for MDN to post another followup article to the kinky one regarding the 1st ad.

Sep 11, 08 - 09:32 pm Comment from: Ad Man

MDN ought to write the ads instead.

I laughed ten times more during the brief MDN Take than I did during the 4:30 video.

Sep 11, 08 - 09:32 pm Comment from: nekogami13

Bill & Jerry are just like Microsoft& Windows:
Out of touch with the average person
Useless
No idea what stuff is valued at
Take your work from you, leaving you nothing
Aimlessly wandering to nowhere

Sep 11, 08 - 09:35 pm Comment from: Y-City Jim

I liked Seinfeld's Superman commercials better.

Sep 11, 08 - 09:36 pm Comment from: sleeve

well, thats it. I'm sold. I have a macbook pro, powerbook g4, iMac g4, Airport w/ Wireless N, AppleTV, a red iPod nano, 2 iPhones and a mac color classic. I will be putting everything on craigsist immediately to fund my Vista purchase. I can't believe i've been a fool for so long. Thank jeebus they made these commercials!

Now where's my dust-off... it makes me feel like i'm walking on sunshine!

Sep 11, 08 - 09:39 pm Comment from: CYxodus

I stopped at 1 minute, I couldn't take it any more.

Sep 11, 08 - 09:41 pm Comment from: archidude

This ad is obscure enough when you know who these guys are. What could you possibly make of this if you did not no one or the other or both?

Sep 11, 08 - 09:43 pm Comment from: Frank

wow..umm..simply wow. Tylenol and early bed for me cause I just don't see it...what...the...hell?????

Sep 11, 08 - 09:45 pm Comment from: Bread

What did that ad even have to do with Windows Vista? On that note, I liked it.
"When is this coming out?"
"Never, if someone asks how you got this you don't know."

Sep 11, 08 - 09:46 pm Comment from: KingMel

I agree with "not a total waste of time." But darn close. I just don't see the purpose. Gates isn't even actively working with M$ anymore and hasn't been for a while. So why spend time and money trying to humanize the multi-billionaire? What does that do for M$?

After you watch these videos, its disbelief followed by confusion (or the reverse the other way 'round).

Sep 11, 08 - 09:47 pm Comment from: undawater

This is an inane campaign but I'll give Gates his philanthropic props. At least it's better than Bee Movie.

Sep 11, 08 - 09:49 pm Comment from: Skeeter

OMG that is so funny! They are out there but boy are they a laugh!

Sep 11, 08 - 09:49 pm Comment from: coolfactor

Is this Microsoft admitting they are out of touch with "real people"? I think so.

Sep 11, 08 - 09:50 pm Comment from: Comfort

A new, painful pair of shoes that you finally break in and get used to. The crazy relative that you learn to live with. Your bedroom, your house, your family - warts and all. You don't really want to change.

That's what this ad was about.

People can adapt to and tolerate discomfort. Consider Windows, consider the political situation of the last 8 years. You don't want scary, new change. Stay with the same old pain.

Sep 11, 08 - 09:55 pm Comment from: Jim

Didn't really like it. Thought Gates and Seinfeld being rude and showing just how insanely out of touch they are. Not good at all.

Sep 11, 08 - 09:57 pm Comment from: DogGone

You know it's funny in the typical Seinfeld way, but it does nothing to suggest Windoze is good, reliable or even vaguely interesting.

What's the point? Is this being shown on TV?

Sep 11, 08 - 09:59 pm Comment from: thethirdshoe

Actually the philanthropy was an eye opening experience for William.

He was wanting to give away computers (something like that) and he found out that people needed food and medicine first.

It's still a small needle.

Sep 11, 08 - 10:03 pm Comment from: Duh

Beavis and Butthead. But which one is which?

Sep 11, 08 - 10:07 pm Comment from: DavidO

"Pretty damn funny," I have to admit. Too bad Bill can't make an OS that's 1% as fun to use as this ad is to watch.

Sep 11, 08 - 10:07 pm Comment from: nanisani

Good to see a couple of unemployed billionaires have something to do with their spare time.

Actually - This could evolve into a decent sitcom. Bill's got a good 'deadpan' style. Maybe he's found his true calling after all.

Won't sell Window's though.

Sep 11, 08 - 10:13 pm Comment from: MidWest Mac

This is the type of advertising that you do when you don't have a product that you can honestly say is the best on the market.

When you have something that is great, you find ways to say so.

What this commercial says to me is that Bill Gates is rich because he sold a lot of software. And not much else.

Of course the PC has been "connecting" people. It's the dominant OS by market share by a wide margin. But the latest software the company has made quite frankly sucks and its future doesn't look any brighter if you ask anyone who knows about the structure of Windows.

Bottom line: OS X is superior. It's increasingly compatible. With 40 percent of college students buying Macs, I think we know what the future is.

A mildly amusing commercial very much like a sitcom that was fantastic in 1995 doesn't change that.

Sep 11, 08 - 10:14 pm Comment from: ElderNorm

WAIT,.... WAIT, I got it. I have solved the mystery of the universe (and no its not 42) !!!

After another 3-4 of these commericals, Jerry turns to Bill and says, "Hey, all this commercial making is making me hungary. Want to buy a Churros?" and Bill thinks a moment, turns and says, "You know, I am hungary. Lets go by Churros World and get one. and while we are there, I think we ought to visit that computer store next door. What do you think?"

Jerry says "Sure. You got it."

The next seen is both of them eating Churros and walking in the mall. They stop right in front of.............. an Apple store. !!!!

Bill turns to Jerry and says, "Want to go in?"

The last commercial of the series shows both of them wandering around the Apple store, pointing at equipment, trying out an iPhone, and making short comments like --- "neat, nice, This is cute......"

As we fade out, both guys are walking out of the store with arms full of Apple products. Jerry turns to Bill and says, "NOW THAT was fun!!"

End of series.

Well,...... what do you think? Will it sell....... Apple computers??

grin

Just a thought.

Sep 11, 08 - 10:15 pm Comment from: HEY MDN!

You guys are all wrong. These commercials are not for trying to get people to dump Macs, these commercials are trying to get people to STICK WITH WINDOWS!!!

now, that of course is another battle entirely....

Sep 11, 08 - 10:16 pm Comment from: Michael Cheung

i felt sick after watching that.

Sep 11, 08 - 10:23 pm Comment from: Berrylium

For and a half minute TV commercials? Jeesu, that'll cost enough to build a whole new operating system from the ground up. Oh, wait, that's too sensible a solution to the Vista mess.

Sep 11, 08 - 10:25 pm Comment from: d

I thought it was hillareous. Won't help MS, but a genuinely entertaining commercial. I have nothing but respect for Bill Gates, BTW. He has done more for humanity in the last 5 min. than any of his critics in their lifetime.. He is not microsoft. Get over it people.

Sep 11, 08 - 10:27 pm Comment from: Pedro the doorman

Why in hell would they be walking down the street with their suitcases? Don't they own cars? Couldn't they call a cab? This whole thing makes no damn sense. It's dumber than thinking some Alaskan beauty queen could be President.

Sep 11, 08 - 10:30 pm Comment from: chaz

way funnier than the first one

Sep 11, 08 - 10:35 pm Comment from: M.X.N.T.4.1.

The whole thing just about works as a series of comedy sketches, although they're only mildly amusing at best, once they're walking away from the house though it just becomes cringe-worthy because it gets perilously close to being actually about Microsoft but is still utter tripe.

I liked the whole: "When is this coming out?"
"Never, if someone asks how you got this you don't know.", but, "Goldfish with a website?" What? That's not funny, just stupid and resolutely makes Microsoft or Windows any more appealing. Are we supposed to actually believe that Microsoft are spending time and money on nonsense? Is that supposed to make them look like a company we should want to buy from?

Sep 11, 08 - 10:37 pm Comment from: ericdano

What the hell was that? God, please make it stop

Sep 11, 08 - 10:41 pm Comment from: rageous

Solid plan.

Openly admitting (via your characters) that you're out of touch with "real" people. Then you depict those people to be scheming and conniving, have an argument with a girl, pack your bags and leave their house...

Ending with a messaging about connecting billions of people?

What irredeemable moron wrote this?

Sep 11, 08 - 10:45 pm Comment from: Arnold Ziffel

@d,

Please! Bill G has done more for humanity? Puh.

He's lined his nest with ill-gotten gains and now feels guilty about

doing so.

Oh, and this ad is only slightly less stupid, lame, idiotic than the

first one.

Sep 11, 08 - 10:45 pm Comment from: Modbus

Vista?

Zune to be forgotten. The first beta of Windows 7 is due out in mid-December. Another 3 years give or take ten and it will be released. So much for that pathetic Mojave Experiment. If Ballmer didn't own a huge chunk of MS in stock, he'd be selling used cars or cemetery plots in Kirkland by now.

But this quote has to be the "funnest" part (or saddest):

"Contrary to some speculation, Microsoft is not creating a new kernel for Windows 7. Rather, we are refining the kernel architecture and componentization model introduced in Windows Vista. While these changes will increase our engineering agility, they will not impact the user experience or reduce application or hardware compatibility. In fact, one of our design goals for Windows 7 is that it will run on the recommended hardware we specified for Windows Vista and that the applications and devices that work with Windows Vista will be compatible with Windows 7." - Chris Flores, Windows Client Communications Team

Sep 11, 08 - 10:46 pm Comment from: Immundo

Don't you see? It's starting to work. These are two characters that are making people laugh, a little to begin with, and you start to invest in them emotionally with every new episode, and you will grow to like them. Bill Gates being one of them, that we all naturally associate with Microsoft and Windows, you just might start to associate Windows with "cool" again, in an off beat Seinfeld way.
